3. 2 il Basic Operation The AST 3500 phone lets you make calls using both the AirCell Nationwide Cellular Network and the Iridium Satellite Network The phone has two separate phone numbers one for each network Make note of these numbers in the front of this manual Turning Phone Power On and Off Your phone has power anytime the aircraft s main avionics power switch is on During initial power up a small dot appears in the display s lower left corner the dot indicates the phone has power To turn off power to the phone use the phone s circuit breaker or the main avionics power switch do not use this method in flight The handset s key is only used to restart the system to save new default settings such as a new ringer volume Checking the Telephone Display The display shows either the telephone number being dialed or a system status indicator Iridium Mode is indicated by IRIDIUM The default AirCell Mode is indicated by an S a signal strength indicator and ROAM During power up NoSvc appears briefly in the display s bottom center You cannot place a call until the NoSve indicator turns off Checking the Aircell Signal Strength Indicator In AirCell Mode the Signal Strength Indicator bar graph below shows in the display s top left following the S for signal that also indicates you are in AirCell Mode An S alone indicates no signal Each additional horizontal bar indicates greater signal strength A mini

11. atures e To recall a number press and the one touch dialing key e To clear a number press EJ Eo and the dialing key At the ALPHA prompt press At the CHANGE prompt press 79 Learning About Entering Characters Use the same basic techniques for entering characters for memory or one touch dialing At an ALPHA prompt you can enter alphabetical characters using the numeric keypad For example press once for A twice for B or three times for C Press G4 to move the cursor forward or press C to move the cursor backward To delete a selected character press E 4 6 E Volume Settings Displaying the Volume Meter The phone s volume meter shows the current volume setting The current setting displays whenever you adjust the volume by pressing the or Y keys The volume level displays as a bar graph after the letter V on the display s left side Each additional bar indicates a higher volume setting up to a maximum of six Changing Ear Piece Volume You can change the ear piece volume during a call or whenever the handset is out of the cradle Increase or decrease the volume by pressing and holding the Q or V keys The maximum setting is six bars Changing the AirCell Ringer Volume You can change the telephone s AirCell Mode ringer volume Once the ringer volume is set as desired you can also save the setting by using the key to restart the AirCell phone system The saved setting is used as the d
12. e To use a calling card 1 Dial the card s toll free access number 2 Follow the online prompts Or let the calling card company s personnel assist you in placing the call Displaying the AirCell Telephone Number You can review the AirCell phone number assigned to the aircraft To display the number press E G When done press CA Sending and Receiving Faxes AirCell Mode supports facsimile service Plug the fax machine into the RJ11 modular telephone jack and connect any required power supply e To send a fax refer to the instructions for your fax machine e To receive a fax press the fax machine s Start button if you hear an incoming fax signal when you pick up the handset Then press the handset s key to switch the call from the handset to the fax machine 4 1 Locking and Unlocking the Telephone In AirCell Mode you can lock the phone handset to prevent its use for any incoming and outgoing calls during a flight Once the locking is set as desired you can also save the setting for other flights by using the key to restart the AirCell phone system The saved setting is used as the default until changed To lock the handset 1 Press o CRD The display then shows LOCK 2 Press gt to lock the handset which displays LOCKED as confirmation Or press to cancel without locking To unlock the handset Enter the unlocking code on the handset Unless the code has been changed enter the factory pres

15. mum of three bars is recommended before placing calls 65 cS No Signal Min Recommended Strong Signal Signal 3 1 Selecting Network Modes Your telephone provides a choice of three network modes for calls from the aircraft Select a mode to lock in a particular calling network or let the system select for you e AirCell Mode Use this mode for voice or data calling within AirCell s continental USA cellular communications network e Iridum Mode Use this mode for calling outside of the AirCell Network Lets you access the Iridium Satellite Network e Auto Select Network Mode Use this default mode to let the system automatically select the AirCell Network for outgoing calls voice or data within AirCell s coverage area Outside of the AirCell coverage area this mode automatically switches the phone to the Iridium Network Once you select a network mode it remains until you change it or you turn off the power Except where noted telephone features and instructions apply to all modes To select a network mode 1 With the power on press the key 2 Select the network e For the AirCell Network press and then CD An S and a signal strength indicator display e For the Iridium Network press G gt and then D The display then shows IRIDIUM For Auto Select press GD and then Go The display briefly shows AUTO and then indicates the currently selected network Note Regardless of the selected mode

18. the phone can answer calls in either mode Wherever service is available the phone rings when there is an incoming call Press to receive any type of call 3 2 Learning More About Network Modes Use AirCell Mode for clear convenient calling within the continental USA AirCell Mode also provides the fastest data transmissions Use Iridium Mode for continuous calling almost anywhere in the world An AirCell Mode call in progress cannot be continued on the Iridium Network without redialing If you lose AirCell cellular coverage during a call redial using the Iridium Mode To quickly enter Iridium Mode for a call simply begin dialing any number with 00 This prefix automatically selects Iridium Mode regardless of the phone s current mode setting Iridium Mode is useful even within AirCell s continental USA network area For example you can use Iridium Mode anytime you suspect you might lose AirCell coverage such as during descent or when flying across a USA border In Auto Select Network Mode you can also place two simultaneous calls Use AirCell Mode to start a fax or data call Once connected the phone automatically switches to Iridium Mode and you can make a simultaneous voice call When both calls end the phone switches back to the Auto Select Network Mode 3 3 Placing Calls from the Aircraft With a calling mode selected it is easy to place calls from the air lridium Mode To place an Iridium call
