1. It s almost as though the body is lying in parts and I assemble it into something beautiful First I look at her proportions If she has a long torso and short legs I move my camera down Then I ask her to put her weight on each leg to see what the hips are doing I work very carefully with the best she has Proportions are very important I tighten everything At the very end I ask her to breathe so that her body is both tense and relaxed I never carry a camera with me Everything that I do is by intuition The only thing I plan is when the model arrives I am an opportunist My pictures are about awareness I consider it a great privilege to be a photographer It is such a joy to make a connection with everything ON EDWARD WESTON Edward Weston made me think photography was serious Before that I thought it a craft I saw his work and realized the heart was involved I asked myself if I could also make people feel that way When I first saw his work I cried he ran after me with a handkerchief and said Stay for dinner The difference between my photographs and Edward s is he is a man and I am a woman A man s nude suggests What is your phone number When I look at a woman I look at her as being me I identify with her beauty and proportions There is never sexiness in my photographs Sensuousness Yes cont pg 13 The Imagemaker Page 19 A TRIBUTE TO RUTH BERNHARD con d October 14 1905 to December 18 2006 ON ROBERT MAP

13. 3200 set it to 1600 Set Shutter Priority Mode on your camera If you don t have this mode use the Night Photography setting Both these settings turn off the flash which is what we want here To fix any exposure problem change the Exposure Value EV setting of your camera For images that are too dark set the EV to 1 or 2 and take the shot again If the resulting image still isn t right try again with a lower EV value Another way to fix an exposure problem is to switch your camera into Manual mode Use the camera s menu system to display the shot record EXIF data of the first shot you took Take a note of the Aperture and Shutter Speed settings Then switch the camera to Manual Mode set the same Aperture and then take about 4 more shots each time varying the shutter speed to be slightly longer than last time For instance if the camera chose an Aperture of 5 6 and shutter speed of 2 seconds I would place the camera into manual mode set the same aperture 5 6 and try three more shots with slightly slower shutter speeds say 2 5 3 2 and 4 seconds These are the three next slower shutter speed settings on my camera Take a look at each of these photos on your camera s screen You will find each image to be brighter than the previous images What you want is a brightness where you can see the darker areas of your photo but the lights aren t too bright I take one last shot setting the shutter speed to be slightly slower once agai

PLETHORPE I think Robert Mapplethorpe was inspired some by my sense of organization I ve never seen a bad Mapplethorpe photograph but he had a more narrow view than I he was very interested in his personal experiences have great regard for that Impersonal photographs are for the birds I photograph the things for which I am very passionate for instance leaves Her Story Reprinted from Wikipedia Free Encyclopeidia on the Web www wikipedia org Bernhard was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy of Art from 1925 27 Bernhard s fa ther Lucian Bernhard was known for his poster and typeface design In 1927 Bernhard moved to New York where her father was already living She worked as an assis tant to Ralph Steiner in Delineator magazine but he terminated her employment for indifferent per formance She used her severance pay to finance her own photographic equipment In 1935 she chanced to meet Edward Weston on the beach in Santa Monica She would later say I was unprepared for the experience of seeing his pictures for the first time It was overwhelming It was lightning in the darkness here before me was indisputable evidence of what I had thought possible an intensely vital art ist whose medium was photography By the late 1920s while living in Manhattan Bernhard was heavily involved in the lesbian sub culture of the artistic community becoming friends with photographer Bernice Abbott and her lover
