2. 4 F3 MOMENTARY 2 With the UT2 unplugged from LocoNet Set the rotory selectors to the proper setting See Table I 3 Press and hold the FO key while you plug the UT2 into the LocoNet network As soon as the UT2 powers up release the FO key The UT2 is now set to the new configuation and will continue to use this configuration until you change it again The UT2 will remember this new configuration whether it is plugged in or not UT2 ID NUMBER All UT2 throttles come from the factory with the Throttle ID set to 00 As you add throttles it is a good idea to make each throttle s ID unique Use the following proceedure to set the ID number 1 Unplug the UT2 from LocoNet 2 Set the two digit ID number of your choice on the two rotory selectors 3 Press and hold the SHIFT PROG key and plug back into LocoNet 4 Release the SHIFT PROG key The UT2 will remember this number until you decide to change it 9 2 Track Power Mode If track power is off press RUN STOP and ON simultaneously to have the DB150 or other Digitrax command station turn on the track power amp go through power up sequencing Press RUN STOP and OFF to turn track power off 9 3 Walkaround Operation on LocoNet The UT2 does not use a battery to maintain it s internal memory All data is stored in EEPROM When the UT2 is connected to LocoNet It receives it s total power requirements from the network NOTE The UT2 draws approx 15ma at a m

Digitrax DS54 1 Press the RUN STOP and the OPSW buttons at the same time to activate Switch Mode 2 Use the two rotary selectors on the UT2 to select the turnout address to throw or close With the UT2 you are limited to a two digit turnout address 3 The c LED will light if the last known state of the turnout selected is the closed position 4 Press ACQ to throw or close the turnout 5 The c LED will be dark if the last known state of the turnout selected is the thrown position 6 If the c LED flashes on and off the turnout state is unknown 7 Return the rotory selector switches to the locomotive address before exiting Switch Mode If the locomotive address is not correct the locomotive will be released 8 Press RUN STOP and OPSW at the same time to return to normal operation While in Switch Mode you can still control the speed and direction of your locomotive Functions will also operate normally while in switch Mode 9 8 Status Editing Mode If you have a decoder that does not understand 128 speed step or 28 speed step operations as in some LENZ MARKLIN ARNOLD and MRC decoders you will need to Tell the Command Station or edit the status of that locomotive before running it with the UT2 To Status Edit the speed steps 1 Press and release the PROG SHIFT button 2 For the next 5 seconds one of the top LED s will blink indicating the speed step setting the Command Station is currently send

5. this situation This protects the components from thermal stresses that degrade long term reliability The ratings and operating envelope of power input and output are conditional on not generating over temperature conditions Over temperature is not directly injurious to the DB 150 or its reliability but will cause the inconvenience of automatic temporary suspension of track power Each installation will be affected differently due to normal room temperature cooling airflow around the DB150 scale voltage in use and load current draw Over temperature shut down is usually not encountered except in the case where a user is pushing for maximum available power rating 7 2 Power On Indicator This GREEN LED indicates that the power to the DB150 is on The POWER ON Indicator also tells you what mode the DB150 is operating per the following chart Steady on DB150 is Command Station 1 2 sec on 1 2 sec off DB150 is Expansion Booster 1 sec on 1 sec off DB150 is OP Mode 2 sec on 2 sec off DB150 is SLEEP Mode Fast Pulsing DB150 in PROGRAM Mode Off 4 sec them blinks DB150 Fault Codes DB150 Fault Codes The POWER ON Indicator may also display FAULT CODES While displaying FAULT CODES the indicator will be off for 4 seconds then will blink a certain number of times depending on the fault It will repeat this until the fault is corrected The following chart shows some common fault codes 1 blink Short Circu

8. a time 5 4 Bi color Track Indicators Hooking up Bicolor LED indicators around the layout is a convenient way to see the power status of sections of the layout at a glance The LED indicates whether a track section is powered up if Zero stretching Analog mode is being used and its local direction and can even be used to indicate if the GAPS in a reverse section are matched or not You will need One 2 lead bi color LED Radio Shack 276 012 One ballast or current setting resistor We recommend a 1K 1 4 watt resistor Radio Shack 271 1321 for reasonable brightness and current levels eConnect the 1K resistor in series with either one of the LED leads to make a ballasted LED eWith the 2 leaded bi color LED there is no strict polarity to observe the emitted color will depend on the direction the LED leads are connected to the track eSimply connect the ballasted led across the track to indicate the track is powered If you connect a ballasted led across one of the double gaps of a reverse section the LED will be OFF not lit when the gap polarity is matched 5 5 LocoNet Wiring Components SOURCE OF RJ12 COMPONENTS For a convenient source of a wide range of in stock reasonably priced LocoNet throttle network RJ12 connection products we recommend DIGIKEY The RJ12 is the most common 6 pin version of the RJ11 connector with all 6 pins loaded with conductors This is the connector Digitrax uses for LocoNet throttle bus DIGIKEY
9. change direction and or speed to match the current settings on the UT2 Care should be taken to insure that the UT2 is at a comparable speed setting and direction before selecting a locomotive 9 6 Programming Mode 22 To use the UT2 to program a decoder you must first put the UT2 in Programming Mode To do this press and hold RUN STOP and simultaneously press PROG The Status LED will now turn a steady orange color indicating the UT2 is now in Programming Mode Set the locomotive you wish to program on an isolated programming track See Section 5 2 Make sure that the DB150 command station is not connected to any other part of the layout If you don t have a programming track on your layout remove any locomotive you don t want programmed at this time NOTE Decoders are programmed when the command station sends programming information to them through the rails This information is sent as a broadcast message to any decoder that is listening This means that you could reprogram all the locos on the track with one keystroke To prevent this it is useful to add an isolated programming track as described in Section 5 2 Set Decoder Address 1 Set the rotary selectors to the desired address 01 98 2 Press the ADR button to select and send that address to the decoder The decoder will now answer to the new address Set Configuration Variables CV s 1 Set the rotary selectors to the CV number that you wish to set

11. dials in the 1 s Select address 99 to select a locomotive or consist that has been DISPATCHED from another Digitrax throttle see section on Dispatched locomotives 3 After selescting the address press ACQ DISP once to finish the selection If ACQ DISP is pressed a second time the locomotive will be returned to the system again Pressing ACQ DISP again will reselect again 4 If the UT2 is in QUIK MODE and the locomotive you have selected is available the STATUS LED will light a solid green The selected locomotive will immediately change direction and or speed if the current settings on the UT2 don t match the locomotive Care should be taken to insure that the UT2 is at a comparable speed setting and direction before selecting a locomotive when in QUIK MODE 5 Ifthe STATUS LED does not light at all when the address is dialed in that locomotive is already assigned to another throttle and is not available 10 5 Dispatching Locomotives Dispatching is a special feature incorporated into the LocoNet language to meet the needs of clubs and serious operators that wish to enforce a strict discipline in how engineers access locomotives An example would be having a Superintendent of motive power making all the locomotive assignments To dispatch a locomotive using a the UT2 simply press the ACQ DISP and the SHIFT buttons together and the locomotive or consist currently being controled wil
12. full speed has 14 discrete speed steps This means that speed control will be limited to just 14 steps 14 speed step mode gives reasonably good speed control Increasing to 28 speed step operation will give much better speed control and going to 128 speed step operation will give really excellent speed control Standard mode is offered in most command stations because there are many decoders on the market that are not capable of 28 or 128 step mode Start Voltage or V Start is the voltage added to the motor drive voltage at the first speed step This adjustment allows you to trim the loco to compensate for its motor efficiency Status Editing Decoders a DCC decoder s status can be manually changed by a Digitrax command station at any time the decoder is selectable Stealing a Loco this procedure allows a DT200 user on a Big Boy or a DT100 user on a Chief Set to override the in use interlock and force the throttle to log on to an in use loco This can result in having two throttles logged on to and controlling one address See also Slot Following Throttles Throttles are input devices that tell the Command Station what you want the decoders to do You can have many throttles on your system The number is determined by the capabilities of the Command Station you are using You can also use a computer to create soft throttles Sometimes DCC throttles are also called Cabs TOP Locomotive We call the key locomotive that other locomotives are cons
13. i e the side that is connected to the RAIL A of a Digitrax track terminal is important This issue will be important on large layouts where the layout is isolated into many sections with individual Boosters driving them This is very beneficial in a DCC driven layout because it allows the rest of the layout to keep running even when an isolated track section experiences a short circuit or problem such as a derail or balky switches that shut it down This is similar to blocking in a conventional layout With DCC this is a recommended but optional layout practice Connections to a large layout should be via a parallel conductor power bus similar to the recommended practices used in most conventional layouts with appropriate larger copper conductors feeding taps up to the track every 10 feet or so Itis advisable to keep all conductors twisted to keep the geometry best for minimum RF radiation Some experimentation may be needed on your layout to ensure no circulating ground loops are present Try to wire all the power feeds away from the boosters and command stations in a radial star like configuration so no large magnetic induction loops are created It is not possible to place filters or ANY capacitors across the track as these will short out the DCC signals Be sure that no capacitors are bridging your DCC sections When running between Digitrax DCC track sections and adjacent conventional DC powered tracks both rails must have insulating gaps
14. important with inexpensive locomotives Using Digitrax decoders with appropriate programming settings you can achieve surprisingly good guality motion if you carefully adjust the mechanisms for smooth running Strange Lights not the ones in the sky If you can t control the operation of the lights in your locomotive with the UT2 in default 128 or 28 speed step mode be sure that the decoder is programmed in advanced 28 speed step mode Do this by programming Configuration Variable 29 with a value of 06 the code for advanced mode per Table IV Refer to section 8 5 for complete programming instructions Your Digitrax decoder has been shipped programmed to 128 speed step mode You may have changed your decoder s programming when performing the decoder test procedure In any case if you are not able to turn the locomotives lights on and off you will need to change CV 29 to 06 to have proper light operation when using the UT in its optimum 128 speed step mode 13 0 Glossary 128 Speed Step Mode the motor voltage speed curve of the DCC loco from stop to full speed has 128 discrete speed steps This means that you have 128 discrete speed steps at your disposal for excellent speed control especially at very low speeds 128 speed step operation will give a significant improvement in speed control over 14 or 28 step operation 128 speed step operation is only offered in advanced and professional level DCC systems AC or Alternating Current A

16. plug my UT2 back in it doesn t log back on to the engine or engines I was running before I unplugged What should I do The DB150 will automatically release or Purge locomotives from in use to common that are not under the control of a throttle connected to LocoNet after about 200 seconds This is a safety feature that allows other throttles in the system to gain control of engines that may have been left running unattended by an engineer Once a loco has been purged by the DB150 to common other throttles in the system will be able to select amp control it If this occurs amp the original UT2 is plugged back in again it will not log back on to the purged loco since it sees that another throttle now has that loco in use If the purged loco has not been placed in use by another throttle then the original UT2 will automatically recover the purged loco when it is reconnected to LocoNet By setting some of the DB150 s option switches you have several purging options available 1 The default is purge time 200 seconds 2 Purge time can be increased to 600 seconds OPSW13 closed 3 Purged locomotives can be set to stop when purged OPSW15 closed 4 Purging action can be disabled completely OPSW 14 closed See section 11 0 for information about setting DB 150 option switches 18 Diagram 3 UT2 Throttle Diagram Direction Toggle Switch Section 8 3 i Thretde Erab 2 Seccion 6 2 Green LED Indicaters Secion d 12 Potro
17. the input allows the unit to boost from a different system without sharing ground connections and needing opto isolation Just connect RAIL_SYNC to the ground reference of the signal source and RAIL_SYNC to the signal assuming a signal of say 5 V For an input signal on RAIL_SYNC that swings from ground to say 5V connect the system grounds and connect RAIL_SYNC to ground via a 22 Kilohm 1 4 watt resistor 7 9 Mode Switch This is a primary control for the running amp configuration of the DB150 The 3 settings are e RUN position is for normal operations e OP position can be selected to allow a UT2 DT1OOIR or DT200 throttle access to the Option Switches for unit customization e SLEEP position is used to shutdown the system and to power down the attached throttles and generate keep alive power for the throttles 7 10 Scale Voltage Switch O G HO N This switch sets the maximum track Voltage limit appropriate for the selected scale These settings allow operations of locomotives at levels close to the S9 NMRA values SCALE MAX TRACK VOLTAGE OG 17 TECHNICAL NOTES For N scale the limit is approximately 12V peak on the track and is a couple of volts less at the motor brushes in a locomotive accounting for rectifier diode and transistor voltage drops and booster output voltage drop due to full load current For HO scale selected the output voltage is approximately 15V peak to allow full voltage at the motor brushes af
18. the two terminals marked POWER IN to the output from your transformer Power up your booster and the DB150 will perform an internal check for about 2 seconds then Beep once if all is OK The POWER ON LED will glow green and the TRACK STATUS LED will come on at this time If the TRACK STATUS LED does not light press RUN STOP and the ON key at the sme time to turn on track power 3 2 Plugging in your UT2 Throttle For operation the UT2 does not need a battery The UT2 will remember the last throttle settings after it is unplugged from LocoNet and will resume when it is plugged back into LocoNet 1 Plug the UT2 into either LocoNet jack on the DB150 2 When the UT2 is first connected to LocoNet all the LEDs in its display will blink on and then off again This means that the throttle is working and is communicating as it should Turning on the track power Turn on the track power by pressing and holding the RUN STOP button then simultaneously pressing the ON FI button The DB150 will beep once and the TRACK STATUS light on the DB150 will come on Turning off the track power Turn off the track power by pressing and holding the RUN STOP button then simultaneously pressing the OFF F2 button The DB150 will beep once and the TRACK STATUS light on the DB150 will go out Connect your layout to Genesis Note During your initial installation we recommend that you make these connections after powering up the DB1
19. 50 amp UT2 so that you will be able to determine that your DCC equipment is working properly prior to introducing any potential outside wiring problems If your layout has any short circuits amp you connect it to the DB150 s RAIL A B terminals when you power up the DB150 it will beep up to 5 times amp shut down the RAIL A B terminals until the fault is cleared 1 The DB150 TRACK STATUS indicator should now glow ORANGE indicating the track is powered 2 Connect the RAIL A and RAIL B terminals to your track 3 3 Running a Locomotive Connect UT2 to LocoNet A or B on the DB150 or any LocoNet connector connected to the DB150 Run an Anolog Locomotive on Address 00 The address 00 is reserved for Anolog locomotives or any locomotive not equipped with a decoder 1 Place a non decoder equipped locomotive on the track The locomotive will make a whinning noise this is the normal sound an anolog locomotive will make on a DCC layout 2 Select the two digit address 00 of the anolog locomotive you want to run using the rotary selectors on the UT2 The left rotary selects the tens and the right rotary selects the ones 3 Press ACQ DISP to select locomotive The STATUS LED should be a steady green to indicate that you now control that locomotive 4 If the STATUS LED is dark the locomotive that you tried to select is already being controlled by another throttle in the system and is not available 5 A red S

The DC supply must have some form of current control we recommend a 5 Watt to 10 Watt 12 Volt lamp be placed in series with one of the DC power pack track leads This allows the DCC booster to drive the locomotive properly onto the DC track with minimum interruption and stress to the Booster and decoders and locomotive wheels The lamp will light as the locomotive bridges the gaps You should try to cross these gaps quickly and not bridge the two systems for any longer than necessary 7 5 TRACK STATUS Indicator The TRACK STATUS indicator shows that there is voltage on the track drive terminals The color indicates the signal type If it is orange the track is getting normal DCC signal with no analog zero stretching See below TECHNICAL NOTES The color of the TRACK STATUS led is an indication of the signal type If it glows orange the track sees a normal DCC signal with no zero stretch and a conventional locomotive on the track will hum gently and not move If the color is green a negative stretched zero signal is being boosted for operation of a conventional locomotive A red led color indicates a zero stretch analog signal is being transmitted to the rails for a conventional locomotive to be operated in the reverse direction The DCC decoder equipped locomotives are still reading their Digital commands normally and performing as commanded If the Track Status LED is not lit there is no voltage on the track the track power to the DB150 may be

65. rottle speed is higher or lower than the locomotive you are trying to select If the LED s are strobing Left to Right turn the throttle knob clockwise until the LED s stop strobing and the STATUS LED turns green If the LED s are strobing Right to Left turn the throttle knob counter clockwise until the LED s stop strobing and the STATUS LED turns greenFlipping the toggle switch to the right will make the locomotive go forward Flipping the toggle to the left will make the locomotive go in reverse 6 Turn the throttle knob clockwise to increase speed and counter clockwise to decrease the speed The throttle knob can rotate approx 300 degrees from start to stop Quik Mode While in QUIK MODE the UT2 is able to select an available locomotive regardless of it s present speed and direction 1 Select the two digit address 03 of the DCC locomotive you want to run using the rotary selectors on the UT2 The left rotary selects the tens and the right rotary selects the ones 2 Press ACQ DISP to select locomotive The STATUS LED should be a steady green to indicate that you now control that locomotive 3 If the STATUS LED is dark the locomotive that you tried to select is already being controlled by another throttle in the system and is not available While in QUIK MODE the UT2 is able to select an available locomotive regardless of it s present speed and direction The selected locomotive will
66. rt to stop 3 4 Shutting Down the System When You Are Finished When you are finished with the quick installation session you can shut down the Genesis amp LocoNet by simply RUN switching the DB150 Mode switch to the Sleep position OP At this point all attached throttles will go to a sleep state You can now turn off the power supply to the system You can leave the power to the DB150 on all the time if you choose In the sleep state the DB150 consumes less energy than a 20th of a normal household lamp In this state the DB150 provides keep alive power to all throttles that are connected properly to LocoNet That s all there is to it When you are ready to resume your session exactly where you left off simply turn on the power and switch the RUN DB150 Mode switch back to the Run position be The attached throttles will now come back on line If the track status indicator did not come on when you switched the DB150 back to RUN mode then press RUN STOP and ON on the UT2 to restore track power At this point you have placed your Genesis set in service amp can now continue to add to the layout LocoNet system amp operations as you desire See diagram 2 to get an idea of how to add a host of other Digitrax amp other vendors LocoNet Certified components amp expand on the Genesis set as the core of a very powerful amp expandable networked system If you had problems at any step in this Quick Installation secti
