IVERSAL SALT IODIZATION PROGRAM IDD USI PAKISTAN Background It s been more than half a century when iodine deficiency disorder was recognized as a public health problem in Pakistan a country with more than half of the population estimated to be at r various surveys The situation is worse especially in the northern districts of Pakistan as it is considered to be one of the most severely endemic areas in the world for IDD with goiter prevalen 80 The National IDD Control Program initiated in 1989 had limited effect on the availability and utilization of iodized salt due to limited capacity among the salt processors irregular supply KIO3 poor monitoring absence of quality control system and weaknesses in the regulatory framework IDD USI Pakistan Program The IDD USI Pakistan Program is currently being implemented by Government of Pakistan with the assistance of The Micronutrient Initiative and in collaboration with development partners ir GAIN in 102 districts of Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir by providing technical and operational support to around 1400 salt producers and benefitting a population of more than 158 r spread out in all provinces Punjab Sindh Balochistan Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa KP Azad amp Jammu Kashmir AJ amp K Gilgit Baltistan GB amp Federally Administered Tribal Areas FATA with the availability and accessibility of adequately iodized salt to the vulnerable sections of the population According to the mo
