WART Electronics e 7 i A Division of PanTechne Corporation M O AA m 8 1 www w4rt com For the FT 817 amp FT 817ND a Fast Charge Jack Power Cord to Radio The MEGA 817 is a state of the art 10 000 mAh NiMH battery pack that offers a compact and lightweight means of powering the FT 817 or FT 817 ND for extended periods The MEGA 817 is ideal for long backpacking trips Field Day etc This battery pack manufactured by W4RT Electronics has the following specifications e Capacity 10 000 mAh e Nominal Voltage 9 6 VDC e Technology 8 NiMH D cells e Size 2 3 H by 2 6 W by 5 2 L e Weight 3 1 4 pounds e Safety Features Both positive and negative battery leads are fused compatible with the FT 817 ND thermal protection fuse and all fuses are self resetting e Charging Port Built in jack that interfaces with the W4RT One FAST Charger OFC 817 Charging time is approximately 10 hours The MEGA 817 has a power cable included that plugs into the external power jack on the FT 817 ND You can run at full power 5 W by pressing the power selection switch until the icon has 3 blinking bars showing There is no need to remove the internal OPP 817 battery pack when using the MEGA 817 If you have both of these power sources for your FT 817 ND you have about 12 500 mAh of capacity available How long you can operate clearly is dependent upon how much you transmit and at what power but if you just operate in the receive mode you c2. an listen for around 32 hours So how does the MEGA 817 compare to the SLA gel cell batteries Basically the SLA batteries have about 1350 mAH pound and 135 mAh cubic inch while the MEGA 817 has about 3100 mAh pound and 325 mAh cubic inch In other words the MEGA 817 packs the same charge in about 43 the volume and weight required of SLAs This compactness can mean a lot when you are traveling or packpacking Also SLAs don t have over current or over temperature protection like the MEGA 817 READ THE FOLLOWING PAGE Please READ the following BEFORE USING your MEGA 817 WARNING This battery has a LOT of energy stored withinit Take care not to damage it physically or electrically Although each lead from the battery is fused at about 3 A remain careful If you have an internal battery pack installed in your FT 817 ND you DO NOT have to remove it to use the MEGA 817 Before connecting the MEGA 817 to your FT 817 ND turn the radio OFF Plug the power cable from the MEGA 817 see photo above into the external power jack on the rear panel of your radio Turn your radio ON It will operate in its normal battery mode e g to run 5 W the power icon will have three bars blinking TIP If you are using an internal battery it is best to allow the radio to deplete its charge before using the MEGA 817 CHARGING TIPS e Do not attempt to recharge a fully charged battery e Do not attempt to recharge a partially discharged batt
3. ery unless the voltage is less than about 9 2 VDC see the FT 817 s voltage display as described in your FT 817 User Manual e USE ONLY CHARGERS DESIGNED FOR NiMH BATTERIES e Use only the W4RT Fast Charge Cable see photo above to connect the MEGA 817 and the charger e Always let the MEGA 817 rest 30 60 minutes after discharge or last use before recharging e If you use the W4RT OFC 817 as the charger it will take about 10 1 2 to 11 hours to fully charge the MEGA 817 This charger outputs 1 A and has a 180 minute internal timer This means that you will need to reset unplug and plug the OFC 817 from the wall socket the OFC 817 after each of the first three 3 charges sessions This provides 9 hours of charging The final charging session should cutoff automatically in about 1 1 2 to 2 hours Note minimize the time between each charging session like less than a minute if possible and for best results e If you use a higher charge rate charge less time is needed W4RT recommends that the maximum charge rate not exceed about 5 A e AFTER COMPLETING THE CHARGE LET THE MEGA 817 REST FOR 30 60 MINUTES IF POSSIBLE SO THAT CHARGE CAPACITY AND LIFETIME ARE RETAINED WARRANTY MEGA 817 is warranted for a period of 12 months from the date of purchase to be free of electrical defects in materials and workmanship however NiMH battery cells are warranted for a period of three months If the MEGA 817 is determined to be defective the defective i
