SELECT PROGRAM START PROGRAM J DISPLAY J Note If there is a sheet of clear VEEL Err Jes plastic on the face of the con sole remove it A WARNING reduce risk of serious injury read and understand the user s manual all instructions and the warnings before use Keep children away AGE FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The advanced console offers a selection of features designed to make your workouts more enjoyable and effective When the manual mode of the console is selected the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer can be changed with a touch of a button As you exer cise the console will provide continuous exercise feedback You can even measure your heart rate using the handgrip pulse sensor For information about an optional chest pulse sensor refer to page 20 The console also offers four preset workout programs Each program automatically changes the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer and prompts you to increase or decrease your pace as it guides you through an effective workout In addition the console features two heart rate work out programs that automatically change the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer and prompt you to vary your pace to keep your heart rate near a target heart rate as you exercise The console also features new iFIT com interactive technology

3. 145 138 130 118 110 125 120 115 105 95 20 30 40 60 70 To find the proper heart rate for you first find your age on the bottom line of the chart ages are rounded off to the nearest ten years Next find the three numbers above your age The three numbers are your training zone The lower two numbers are recommended heart rates for fat burning the highest number is the recommended heart rate for aerobic exercise Fat Burning To burn fat effectively you must exercise at a relative ly low intensity level for a sustained period of time During the first few minutes of exercise your body 21 uses easily accessible carbohydrate calories for ener Only after the first few minutes of exercise does your body begin to use stored fat calories for energy If your goal is to burn fat adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the lowest num ber in your training zone as you exercise For maximum fat burning adjust the intensity of your exercise until your heart rate is near the middle num ber in your training zone as you exercise Aerobic Exercise If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys tem your exercise must be aerobic Aerobic exer cise is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for prolonged periods of time This increases the demand on the heart to pump blood to the muscles and on the lungs to oxygenate the blood For aerobic exercise adjust the intens
4. ellipticalworkouts iFIT com we ll notify you as soon as iFIT com CDs and videocassettes are available Or call toll free 1 800 884 0620 Follow the steps below to use iFIT com CD or video program E Turn on the console Refer to step 1 on page 12 FI Select the iFIT com mode Each time the console is turned on the manual mode will be selected To select the iIFIT com mode press the iIFIT com button The indicator beside the button will light and the letters IF will appear in the upper right corner of the display HEART RATE CONTROL Insert the iFIT com CD or videocassette If you are using an iFIT com CD insert the CD into your CD player If you are using iFIT com videocassette insert the videocassette into your VCR 18 Press the play button on your CD player or VCR A moment after the play button is pressed your personal trainer will begin guiding you through your workout Simply follow your personal trainer s instructions The program will function in almost the same way as a preset program refer to step 3 on page 13 However an electronic chirping sound will alert you when the resistance and or the pace setting is about to change Note If the resistance of the elliptical cross trainer and or the pace setting does not change when a chirp is heard Make sure that the indicator beside the iFIT com button is lit Adjust the volume of your CD play
5. program is completed the resis tance level will automatically change if a different resistance setting is programmed for the next period The pace set tings for the pro gram will be shown by the right bar graph in the display The left bar graph will show your actual exercise pace As the right bar graph changes during the program simply increase or decrease your pace so that the same number of bars appear in both bar graphs If your pace is slower than the current pace setting the increase arrow will also appear in the display to prompt you to increase your pace if your pace is faster than the pace setting the decrease arrow will appear Important The pace settings for the program are intended only to provide a goal Your actu al pace may be slower than the pace settings especially during the first few months of your exercise program Make sure to exercise ata pace that is comfortable for you HEART RATE CONTROL Cals Increase Arrow During the program the display will show the time remaining in the program When no time remains the program will be completed If you continue to exercise after the program is completed the dis play will continue to show your exercise feedback Follow your progress with the feedback modes Refer to step 4 on page 12 Measure your heart rate if desired See step 5 on page 12 When you are finished exercising the console will automatically turn off Refer to step 6 a
6. the console If the cur rent resistance level is too high or too low you can adjust the resistance level by pressing the Resistance buttons However when the current period of the program is completed the resis tance level will automatically change if a different resistance setting is programmed for the next period As you exercise the bar graphs will help you to keep your heart rate near the Sean heart rate setting HEART RATE CONTROL Resist for the current period The right bar graph will show a target pace The left bar graph will show your actual exercise pace When you hold the handgrip pulse sensor or wear the optional chest pulse sensor the console will compare your heart rate to the heart rate setting for the current period if necessary the right bar graph will then change to prompt you to increase or decrease your pace to bring your heart rate closer to the current heart rate setting When the right bar graph changes increase or decrease your pace so that the same number of bars appear in both bar graphs If your pace is slower than the current pace setting the increase arrow will also appear in the display if your pace is faster than the pace setting the decrease arrow will appear Important The pace settings for the program are intended only to provide a goal Your actual pace may be slower than the pace settings especially during the first few months of your exercise program Make su

10. upper right corner of the display will show a 5 or 6 When the iFIT com mode is selected the upper right corner will show the letters IF When the manual mode is selected the upper right corner will be blank Pace bar graphs When the manual mode is selected only the left bar graph will appear This bar graph represents your exercise pace As you M change As the right bar graph changes simply adjust your pace so that the same number of bars appear in both bar graphs Important The target pace is a goal pace Your actual pace may be slower than the target pace especially during the first few months of your exercise program Make sure to exercise at a pace that is comfort able for you Training zone display As you exercise the training zone display will show the approximate intensity level of your exercise Program profiles These profiles show how the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer and the tar get pace will change during preset programs and heart rate programs For example profile number 4 shows that during preset program 4 both the resis tance and the pace will gradually increase during the first half of the program and then gradually decrease during the last half IFIT com button This button is used to select the iFIT com mode The indicator beside the button will light when the iFIT com mode is selected Select Program button This button is used to select the manual mode preset p

17. already entered your age press the Enter button and go to step 4 If you have not entered your age press the or button The current age setting will then flash Press the or button repeatedly to enter your age When your age is shown press the Enter button Once you have entered your age your age will be saved in memory until the batteries are replaced 14 Hold the handgrip pulse sensor When using a heart rate program you must use the handgrip pulse sensor refer to step 5 on page 12 or the optional chest pulse sensor refer to page 20 If you use the handgrip pulse sensor it is not necessary to hold the handgrips continu ously during the program However you should hold the handgrips frequently for the program to operate properly Each time you hold the hand grips keep your hands on the metal contacts for at least 30 seconds Note When you are not holding the handgrips the letters PLS will appear in the display instead of your heart rate Start the program To start the program press the Start Program button or simply begin exercising Each heart rate program consists of twenty one minute periods One resistance setting and one heart rate setting are programmed for each period The same resistance setting and or heart rate setting may be programmed for consecutive periods During the program the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer will automatically change as shown by the applicable profile on
18. bove HOW USE RATE PROGRAM Each heart rate program helps you to keep your heart rate near a certain percentage of your maximum heart rate during your workout Your maximum heart rate is estimated by subtracting your age from 220 For example if you are 25 years old your maximum heart rate is 195 Heart rate program 5 is designed to keep your heart rate between 50 and 85 of your maxi heart rate while you exercise heart rate program 6 is designed to keep your heart rate between 50 and 80 of your maximum heart rate Follow the steps below to use a heart rate program E Turn on the console Refer to step 1 on page 12 P Select one of the two heart rate programs Each time the console is turned on the manual mode will be selected To select a heart rate program press the Select Program button repeatedly until the number 5 or 6 appears in the upper right corner of the display HEART RATE CONTROL The profiles numbered 5 and 6 on the right side of the console show the resistance settings for the heart rate programs For example profile number 5 shows that when heart rate program 5 is selected the resistance level will gradually increase during the program and then decrease near the end E Enter your age When a heart rate program is selected the word AGE and the current age setting will flash in the display You must enter your age to use a heart rate program If you have

23. eceiver A Plug the other end of the short jumper wire into either of the indicated jacks on the Console 87 Note The included long jumper wire is not needed Refer to step 1 above Reattach the front of the Console 87 with the four screws Make sure that no wires are pinched 8 INSTALLING THE RECEIVER FOR THE OPTIONAL CHEST PULSE SENSOR HOW USE THE ELLIPTICAL CROSSTRAINER EXERCISING ON THE ELLIPTICAL CROSSTRAINER To mount the elliptical crosstrainer hold the handgrip pulse sensor and step onto the pedal that is in the lowest position Next step onto the other pedal Push the pedals until they begin to move with a continuous motion Note The pedal disks can turn in either direction It is recommended that you turn the pedal disks in the direction shown by the arrow below however to give variety to your exercise you may turn the pedal disks in the opposite direction Handgrip Pulse Sensor To dismount the elliptical crosstrainer wait until the pedals come to a complete stop The elliptical crosstrainer does not have a free wheel the ped als will continue to move until the flywheel stops When the pedals are stationary step off the highest pedal first Then step off the lowest pedal HOW TO ADJUST THE PEDALS The motion of the pedals is deter mined by their position on the spring arms Their are five dif ferent pedal posi tions To adjust the pedals first loosen the

25. ers will appear in the display To change the unit of measurement press the button Then press the Start Program button again When the batteries are replaced it may be necessary to reselect the desired unit of measurement Measure your heart rate if desired Note If you wear the optional chest pulse sensor see page 20 and hold the handgrip pulse sensor at the same time the console may not display your heart rate accurately If there are thin sheets of plas Metal tic on the metal N Contacts contacts on the handgrip pulse sensor peel off the plastic To use the handgrip pulse sensor place your hands on the metal contacts Your palms must be on the upper contacts and your fingers must be touching the lower contacts Avoid moving your hands When your pulse is detected the heart shaped indicator in the display will flash each time your heart beats After a moment two dashes will appear and then your heart rate will be shown For the most accurate heart rate reading continue to hold the handgrips for about 15 seconds Note When you first hold the handgrips the display will show your heart rate continuously for 15 seconds The display will then show your heart rate along with the other feedback modes When you are finished exercising the console will automatically turn off If the pedals are not moved and the console but tons are not pressed for a few minutes the con sole will automatically turn

31. off to conserve the batteries HOW TO USE A PRESET PROGRAM E Turn on the console Refer to step 1 on page 12 FI Select one of the four preset programs Each time the console is turned HEART RATE CONTROL on the manual 6070 070 re mode will be selected Scan f Time select a preset program press the Select Program button repeatedly until the number 1 2 3 or 4 appears in the upper right corner of the display The profiles numbered 1 through 4 on the left side of the console show the resistance and pace settings for the preset programs For example profile number 4 shows that when preset program 4 is selected both the resistance and the pace will gradually increase during the first half of the program and then decrease during the last half Start the program To start the program press the Start Program button or simply begin exercising Each preset 13 program consists of twenty one minute periods One resistance setting and one pace setting are programmed for each period The same resis tance setting and or pace setting may be pro grammed for consecutive periods During the program the resistance of the elliptical crosstrainer will automatically change as shown by the applicable profile on the console If the cur rent resistance level is too high or too low you can change the resistance level by pressing the Resistance buttons However when the current period of the

37. show the number of hours that the elliptical exer ciser has been used Press the Display button again The display will show the distance that the pedals have moved To exit the information mode press the Start Program button again THE OPTIONAL CHEST PULSE SENSOR The optional chest pulse sensor provides hands free operation and continuously monitors your heart rate during your workouts To purchase the optional chest pulse sensor call toll free 1 800 999 3756 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Inspect and tighten all parts of the elliptical crosstrainer regularly Replace any worn parts immediately For smooth operation of the elliptical crosstrainer the incline frame should be kept clean Using a soft cloth and mild detergent clean dust and other residue from the incline frame where the wheels make contact with it Other parts of the elliptical crosstrainer can also be cleaned in this way Never use abrasives or solvents To prevent damage to the console keep liquids away from the console Always remove the batteries from the console when storing the elliptical crosstrainer BATTERY REPLACEMENT If the letters LO appear in the console display the batteries should be checked Refer to assembly step 5 on page 7 to find the location of the battery compart ment Remove one of the batteries and then re insert it If the letters LO continue to appear in the display replace the batteries 20 LUBRICATI

39. xle Cover 74 onto the post on each Upper Body Arm Apply grease to the Arm Axle 19 Insert the Arm Axle into the right Axle Cover 74 and the Right Upper Body Arm 75 Next insert the Arm Axle into the Upright 2 until the left end of the Arm Axle is flush with the left side of the Upright Then insert the Arm Axle into the left Axle Cover 74 and the Left Upper Body Arm 7 Center the Arm Axle 19 Using the included pedal tool tap two Push Nuts 15 about 1 8 onto each end of the Arm Axle Make sure that the Push Nuts are turned as shown in the inset drawing Note It may be helpful if another person holds a block of wood against one end of the Arm Axle while you tap Push Nuts onto the other end Then press an Axle Cap 34 onto each end of the Arm Axle Make sure that all parts of the elliptical crosstrainer are properly tightened Note Some hardware may be left over after assembly is completed If you purchase the optional chest pulse sensor refer to page 20 follow the steps below to install the receiver and the short jumper wire included with the chest pulse sensor 1 Remove the four indicated screws from the back of the Console 87 Lift off the front of the Console 2 Peel the paper off the adhesive pad on the back of the receiver A Orient the receiver exactly as shown and press it onto the Console 87 in the indicated location Connect the short jumper wire B to the wire on the r
