Needle Up Needle Down Use to manually move the needle one half stitch or one full stitch at a time The machine will make slow stitches if you press and hold the Needle Up Down button Start Stop Starts and stops the machine Speed Up In Manual Mode press and hold this button to gradually increase the speed of the machine The of machine needle speed is displayed on the touch screen monitor ranging from 5 to 100 In Regulated mode press and hold this button to increase the stitches per inch SPI ranging from 4 22 SPI Speed Down In Manual Mode press and hold this button to gradually decrease the speed of the machine The of machine needle speed is displayed on the touch screen monitor ranging from 5 to 100 In Regulated mode press and hold this button to decrease the stitches per inch SPI ranging from 4 22 SPI HQ Stitch Regulation To use regulation mode press the Regulated button turns yellow If it is blue simply press the Regulated button to switch from Manual mode to Regulated mode To start and stop the machine e Stop the machine at any time by pushing the Start Stop button on the handles In Cruise stitch regulation mode if you don t move the machine after three or four stitches the machine stops and positions the needle In Precision stitch regulation mode the needle stops when you stop moving the machine and begins stitching again when you move the machine again Press the Start Stop

A CAUTION Over tightening the needle clamp screw will result in damaged threads stripping the hole Stripped holes and damaged threads are not covered under warranty Another side effect of damaged threads is that the needle may be very tight when inserted up into the needle bar To avoid over tightening the screw finger tighten only 5 NOTE Changing the needle is recommended for each new quilt loaded on the machine or any time the needle becomes bent dull or burred A CAUTION Check the needle to confirm it is fully inserted The needle bar has stop sight hole above the needle bar clamp screw Make sure the needle is touching the top of the stop sight hole If it is not the machine timing will be off and it may be possible for the needle to collide with internal parts causing damage not covered by warranty 10 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 01 2014 www HandiQuilter com Changing the Handi Feet Your machine came with two Handi Feet a ruler foot and an open toe foot Use the ruler foot for ruler work and everyday quilting and the open toe foot when you need greater stitch visibility such as micro quilting Other Handi Feet are available such as the Handi Feet Couching Kit To change the Handi Feet 1 Remove the foot that is on the mount by using the 2 5mm hex wrench to loosen the mounting screw far enough that you can slide the foot off of the mount 2 Slide the desired foot onto the mount Note that the opening on the side of

Diagnostics Use the X Motion Sensor test to verify functionality of the X stitch regulator encoder the encoder mounted at the rear of the carriage As you move the carriage left and right you should hear pulsin Ton 8 Enty p 8 Pulsing beep increasing in frequency beep that pulses faster as you move faster A solid as you push the machine faster beep no beep or periods of irregular beeping X Motion Sensor Test Slowly push left and right Failing Test with constant motion indicate a problem with the No beep or solid beep as you move X stitch regulator encoder This could be caused by the machine left and right an unplugged or damaged cable a stitch regulator wheel that is not rotating or possibly by an issue with the main control board The machine may need to be inspected by a qualified Handi Quilter repair technician Press X to close this window or Back to return to the Diagnostics Menu Y Motion Sensor Test Use the Y Motion Sensor test to verify functionality of the Y stitch regulator encoder the encoder mounted to the rear power pod side machine Passing Test wheel As you move the carriage towards you and Pulsing beep increasing in frequency away from you you should hear a pulsing beep that as you push the machine faster pulses faster as you move faster A constant beep no beep or periods of irregular beeping Diagnostics Y Motion Sensor Test Slowly push forward and bac

Handi Quilter technician If thread is shredding at the throat plate check for burrs or jagged edges Gently rub with metal cloth to remove the sharp edge Consult a repair technician to polish any hard to reach or delicate areas or if the burr is inside the throat Use needles recommended by Handi Quilter Using the wrong needle with a smaller shank diameter causes many problems For example a system 1738 287WH needle with a shank diameter of 1 64mm will fit loosely into the needle bar clamp This condition allows the needles to fit into the clamp at an angle which may cause problems including skipped stitches and the needle positioned too far away from the hook point Needle too close to hook causing friction and possible collision of hook point and needle broken thread Needle plate damage Hook damage Broken needles or damaged needle bar clamp Locate the small black USB cable that plugs into the left hand side of the touch screen display and connects it to the handlebar circuit board Make sure both ends are plugged in securely Check the short serial cable that connects the handlebar to the casing of the machine and make sure that the connections are secure Tighten the finger screws if necessary 5 NOTE If the troubleshooting tips do not eliminate the problem please consult an authorized HQ Fusion representative 38 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 01 2014 www HandiQuilter com 501 N 400 W North Salt Lak

14. fasten the handles to the back of the machine Once the two bolts are in place plug the 9 pin connector into the serial port underneath the rear handles see diagram C 32 Ensure the pins are lined up so they are not damaged when the plug is pushed in Push the plug securely in place gt IMPORTANT After the handles have been completely installed and plugged in test them by turning on the HQ Fusion You will not be able to turn on the machine until the front handlebars have been installed If nothing is displayed press the display power button on the top right of the touch screen display If the display still does not turn on check that the handle bar cable on the side of the machine is plugged in securely that your machine is turned on and that the power cord is plugged into the machine as well as a power source 8 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 01 2014 www HandiQuilter com Installing the Power Cord Insert the cord into the top power connector on the rear of the machine Plug the three prong end into a power source After inserting the power cord secure it with the metal retaining bale Unlatch the bale before removing the power cord 5 NOTE The lower power connector is for powering other attachments developed by Handi Quilter To turn on the machine There are two power switches for your machine The main power switch is at the rear of the machine and another power switch is at the front of the machine below the rig
15. may need to be adjusted depending on the fabric thread or batting you are using on each project gt IMPORTANT Top tension should be adjusted after the bobbin case foundation tension adjustment is made To adjust the top tension e tighten the top tension turn the tension knob clockwise To loosen the tension turn the tension knob counterclockwise As you change the top tension the value in the tension indicator box on the Main screen increases or decreases accordingly When you are happy with the tension note the top tension value for that type of thread brand weight and color so you can quickly and easily set the tension when you use this thread again in the future www HandiQuilter com 11 01 2014 HQ Fusion User Manual 17 Whereas bobbin case tension is adjusted in minute increments the top tension dial may need to be adjusted a quarter to a half turn to balance the tension 5 NOTE Before adjusting your top tension remember to floss or pull the top thread up into the tension discs or it will float outside the discs providing little or no top tension This could cause significant tension or nesting problems on the bottom side of the quilt 5 NOTE Dark threads will be heavier because of dye than light threads of the same weight The type or brand of thread may also affect tension settings Each time you change threads you will need to check your tension Maintenance Use only light sewing machine oil in the HQ Fu

19. to move the machine after pressing Stop it can cause deflection in the needle possibly causing it to bend or break In Precision stitch regulation mode the needle will not begin moving until you begin moving the machine after pressing Start While quilting relax your hands and maintain a light touch on the handlebars Gripping the handlebars too tightly may cause body tension resulting in poor quilting quality The HQ Fusion combined with the Fusion Frame system gives you a smooth even movement while quilting www HandiQuilter com 11 01 2014 HQ Fusion User Manual 33 Troubleshooting Stitches are skipping The needle is damaged dull bent Replace the needle often normally once or twice per day for or installed improperly continuous quilting or at least once per quilt Use HQ Fusion recommended needles Always change the needle if the needle has struck any hard object such as a straight pin etc The tip of the needle can become damaged or burred resulting in fabric damage as well as skipped stitches thread breakage or shredding Always change the needle if it has been hit bumped or pulled off center while maneuvering the machine about the quilt A slightly bent needle can be a major cause of skipped stitches Incorrect needle size Check for the proper size of needle for the work and thread being applied to the quilting operation Some battings and fabrics used in quilting may constrict or impede the thread passing throug

21. arm The overspeed alarm notifies you of an overspeed condition This occurs if you are moving the machine too fast for the stitch regulation to effectively maintain even stitches while quilting More stitches per inch means that you will need to move the machine slower to avoid an overspeed condition Fewer stitches per inch means you can more the machine faster before encountering an overspeed condition For example at 2400 stitches per minute the Fusion can stitch 40 stitches per second when at full speed If you want to use stitch regulation to achieve twelve precise stitches per inch you shouldn t move the machine faster than about three to four inches per second e Press the alarm button to enable When enabled the button turns light yellow An alarm will sound when you are stitching faster than the speed setting Needle Up Needle Down When you touch the needle up needle down button it switches from an up arrow needle up and a down arrow needle down To set the needle position when the Stop button on the handles is pressed e Toggle the button to alternate between selecting the needle up or needle down position This setting does not move the needle but rather determines the final needle position after the machine is stopped www HandiQuilter com 11 01 2014 HQ Fusion User Manual 31 Using the Handlebar Buttons The following functions take effect by pressing and then quickly releasing the button ButtonName
22. button on the handles in Precision stitch regulation mode to stop the needle completely and cause the needle to position itself in the needle up or down position Watch Your Speed It is important to not move the machine too fast since this will result in an overspeed condition during which the machine drops out of regulation until you slow your motions to below 100 of motor capacity 32 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 01 2014 www HandiQuilter com To Begin Quilting Thread Requirements Choose high quality threads for your valuable quilts Most machine quilting threads on the market today are acceptable for use with the HQ Fusion Threads may weaken with time so keep your thread collection fresh and protect them from light and dust Needle Requirements For general quilting a size 16 100 needle will accommodate most threads and fabrics Heavier threads such as topstitch and some decorative threads require a larger needle such as 18 110 or 20 120 Lofty batts and heavier fabrics such as denim canvas or densely woven fabric may also require a larger needle To Prepare for Quilting With any quilting machine it is important to understand the basics of free motion quilting The HQ Fusion does not have feed dogs like domestic machines Therefore the fabric does not automatically feed under the hopping foot The operator should synchronize the speed as well as the movement of the machine to get an even consistent stitch In order to become

45. ont handles 1 Locate the three long bolts and the appropriate hex wrench Tilt the screen forward Line up the holes on top of the handles with the pre drilled holes on top of the machine Slide a single bolt into one of the holes until it stops Hand tighten the bolt enough to secure the handles to the top of the machine but still allow you to rotate the handles Secure the short 9 pin handlebar serial cable to the serial port see diagram B 20 on the back casing of the machine 5 NOTE You may need to rotate the handle slightly to allow access to the finger screws Use the finger screws to tighten the 9 pin connector in position If necessary a flat screwdriver may be used to gently secure the connector Rotate the handles back to their correct position and insert and hand tighten the remaining two handlebar bolts Use the included 5 mm Hex wrench to securely fasten the handles to the front of the machine Installing the Rear Handles A CAUTION Check that the HQ Fusion is unplugged from the electrical outlet All power to the machine must be turned off when installing the back handles Failure to do so can result in damage to the machine To install the rear handles The rear handlebar comes mounted with three screws to the L bracket 1 Line up the two holes the L bracket with those on the rear of the machine Slide the short bolts into holes until they stop Hand tighten and then use the Hex wrench to securely

50. tension is adjusted correctly For more information about adjusting tension see Bobbin and Thread Tension Adjustments Bobbin case is damaged corroded Since thread slides over the surface of the bobbin case at a high dirty etc speed make sure the case is free of any lint or foreign matter that could impede thread passage through the machine Moving the machine too fast for Synchronize machine movement and needle speed to get needle speed selected roughly 8 to 10 stitches per inch Elongated stitches are an indication of moving the machine too fast for the current speed www HandiQuilter com 11 01 2014 HQ Fusion User Manual 35 Tension is Poor Corrective Measure Lint caught under the tension If using short staple threads inexpensive or industrial threads spring in the bobbin or coated threads lint and other material will build up under the tension spring and begin to lift the spring reducing the spring s ability to compress against the thread Insert a needle or business card under the spring and clear out the lint The bobbin tension will return fairly close to its preset tension Test the tension before quilting Hand Wheel Won t Rotate Thread is entangled and caughtin e Turn off the machine and unplug the machine from the electrical the hook outlet Lubricate the hook strongly turn the hand wheel clockwise and if necessary counterclockwise several times Then remove the thread caught in the hook Thread Nests Und
51. the foot is lined up with the screw hole Push the Handi Foot up as far as it will go 3 Ensure the foot is centered with the needle when the foot is fully tightened with the 2 5mm hex wrench If it isn t properly centered loosen the lock nut center the foot with the needle hold the foot in position and firmly tighten the lock nut www HandiQuilter com 11 01 2014 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 Installing the Thread Mast To install the thread mast 1 Locate the threaded hole on top of the machine near the rear by the hand wheel 2 The thread mast comes with the washer and nut on it Remove the nut and washer replace the nut onto the mast and then place the washer under the nut and onto the machine painted surface The washer protects the painted surface when the nut is tightened 3 Tighten the mast clockwise until it is securely in place Use the nut to secure the mast to the machine 5 NOTE The eyelets of the thread mast must be centered over the spool pins so the cone will not pull turn or tilt causing thread tension problems Installing the Laser Stylus To attach the laser stylus to the top of the machine 1 Locate the laser stylus guide post the laser holder and the laser stylus 2 Locate the threaded hole on top of the machine near the front see diagram B 27 The laser stylus guide post comes with the washer and nut Remove the nut and washer replace the nut onto the post and
52. through the hole 14 HQ Fusion User Manual 11 01 2014 www HandiQuilter com 6 Make sure the thread is following the groove down the front of the needle and threads from front to back Be careful that the thread does not twist around the needle 5 NOTE To test that the machine is threaded correctly and the tension is correct carefully pull the needle thread taking care to not bend the needle It should pull smoothly with light to medium tension gt IMPORTANT The HQ Fusion quilting machine does not have a presser foot lever or top tension release like a home sewing machine On a home sewing machine the top tension is released when the presser foot is raised allowing the thread to come freely out of the machine When a home machine is threaded the tension discs are released and open for the thread to easily fall between the tension discs This is not the case with the HQ Fusion where the top tension is always tight and the tension discs are never open Therefore the thread must be pulled up or flossed between the tension discs or it will stay outside the discs and float without tension causing serious tension problems and or thread nests It is also possible to bend the needle while it is threaded if care is not taken while moving the machine around the quilt because the top tension is never released Optional Horizontal Spool Holder An optional horizontal spool holder is available for metallic and specialty threads wound on a spool
