1. 3. 41 sil 42 iid i 5 NOTE Handi Quilter Getting Started DVDs are included with your HQ Fusion Machine Review the DVD and these instructions to better understand how to set up and use the HQ Fusion www HandiQuilter com 02 10 2015 HQ Fusion User Manual 7 Installation 1 Place the carriage on the table rails ensuring that the Carriage Encoder Assembly will be toward the back of the machine the power cord side of the machine The back side of the carriage has an encoder assembly attached to the rear cross piece Be sure to place the carriage on the frame correctly Direct excess cable down into the carriage 2 Place the machine on the carriage 3 Plug the ribbon cable into the Carriage Encoder Assembly The connector is keyed so make sure the keyed portion of the cable connector aligns with the keyed portion of the encoder connector 4 The remaining length of cable comes back v under the Power Pod from the Rear Encoder Assembly behind the machine and into the 9 pin serial port of the machine Fold cable back and under the P Pod gt IMPORTANT If the machine is to be removed from the carriage first disconnect the cable from the Carriage Encoder Assembly The other two connectors on the cable should remain in place Failure to unplug the cable when removing the machine from the carriage could result in damage to the cable encoders and carriage Installin

Cruise button Choose speeds between 396 and 5096 If you adjust the speed lower than 396 the Cruise regulation function turns off Basting Stitches There are four basting stitch settings controlled by the stitches per inch function Ensure the Fusion is in stitch regulation mode After the SPI reaches its lowest stitch setting of 4 stitches per inch continue to press the minus button see the basting settings e 0 5 inch baste one stitch every half inch movement of the machine e T inch baste one stitch every one inch movement of the machine e 2 inch baste one stitch every two inches of movement of the machine e 4 inch baste one stitch every four inches of movement of the machine After selecting the basting stitch setting begin quilting by pressing the Start button on the handlebars As you move the machine across the quilt it will perform a stitch needle down and then needle up every half inch one inch two inches or four inches according to your choice The basting stitch options are available only in stitch regulation mode 5 NOTE You can use the Plus and Minus handlebar buttons to change the length of the basting stitch or the number of stitches per inch while quilting However to switch between basting and quilting stitches per inch you must first stop the machine Buttons Some buttons and indicators are available regardless of whether you are in Manual or Regulated stitch modes These are Ligh

Press the calculator button to open the LJ screen for adjusting on screen calculator MR C Use as you would any calculator Press X to close this window me ES ER J 6 JIbj cE me JLS ILO Jimi EA aL J Timers Timers X The HQ fusion has two useful timers The first top le timer is a reminder timer It enables you to set 4 0 an alarm to go off after a specific period of time similar to a kitchen timer Use the plus and minus buttons to set the time duration Then press the Play button to activate the timer When the time duration has elapsed an alarm will sound and a message appears on the display The second bottom timer enables you to track how much time you spend on a quilt project When you begin a new project press the Reset button Then press the Play button to begin recording your quilting time The timer records when the machine is quilting The time is saved even when the machine is turned off When you begin another quilting session quilting time is added to the timer Only press Reset when you want to zero out the 1Handi Quilter timer and begin a new timing session rua T While tracking how much time you are spending on a quilt the Play button becomes a Pause button At any time you can press the Pause button to stop recording the quilting time Press Play when you want to begin recording again 26 HQ Fusion User Manual 02 10 2015 www HandiQuilter com Sti

Speed test helps you determine whether Diagnostics or not there is a problem with the HQ Fusion speed Speed Sensor Test sensor Before performing this test remove the Remove bobbin case and top thread bobbin case and the top thread Clear all objects from the needle area Press the start button Press the Start button and the machine needle will begin moving at 1200 stitches per minute The Passing Test white box will show a number that should stabilize The value stabilizes at 100 at 100 if the sensor is functioning properly Pressing Start again will stop the machine Press X to close this window or Back to return to the Diagnostics Menu Calibrate Tension Test You should only calibrate the tension under the Tension Calibration direction of Handi Quilter technical support Calibration should only be done under the While calibrating the tension you will be asked to guidance of a Handi Quilter Technician do the following Carefully remove tension knob Gently press spring against tension 1 Remove the tension knob discs but do not compress the spring Gently press the spring against the tension discs While nd place x 1 ress the Reset button while not compressing the spring P ij While holding the spring in place press Reset 4 When calibration is complete replace the Reset e EL AM tension knob Replace the tension knobs 9 Alarms The HQ fusion has two useful alarms thread break alarm

The lower power connector is for powering other attachments developed by Handi Quilter To turn on the machine There are two power switches for your machine The main power switch is at the rear of the machine and another power switch is at the front of the machine below the right handlebar for added convenience The machine is turned on when both switches are turned on The machine is turned off when both switches are off However you may turn off the machine functions by turning off only the front switch if you will be returning to quilting within a day Front power switch Turn on the back switch first by toggling the switch from the O position to the 1 position Then turn on the front switch by pressing it The front switch will not turn on the machine unless the back switch is already on 2 IMPORTANT If you will not be using the machine for more than a day we recommend you turn off both switches and unplug the power cord from the power source 2 IMPORTANT Refer to the safety instructions 10 HQ Fusion User Manual 02 10 2015 www HandiQuilter com Inserting or Changing the Needle 1 Move the needle bar to the highest position by turning the front or rear hand wheel or pressing the needle up down control on the handles Then turn off the power 2 Loosen the needle bar clamp thumb screw 3 With the scarf small ground out section dip on the back side of the needle just abov
11. and overspeed alarm Touch the Alarm button and then select either the thread break alarm or the overspeed alarm enable or disable the alarm Thread Break Alarm e Press the alarm button to enable When enabled the button turns light yellow An alarm will sound if the top thread breaks Overspeed Alarm The overspeed alarm notifies you of an overspeed condition This occurs if you are moving the machine too fast for the stitch regulation to effectively maintain even stitches while quilting More stitches per inch means that you will need to move the machine slower to avoid an overspeed condition Fewer stitches per inch means you can more the machine faster before encountering an overspeed condition www HandiQuilter com 02 10 2015 HQ Fusion User Manual 31 For example at 2400 stitches per minute the Fusion can stitch 40 stitches per second when at full speed If you want to use stitch regulation to achieve twelve precise stitches per inch you shouldn t move the machine faster than about three to four inches per second e Press the alarm button to enable When enabled the button turns light yellow An alarm will sound when you are stitching faster than the speed setting Needle Up Needle Down When you touch the needle up needle down button it switches from an up arrow needle up and a down arrow needle down To set the needle position when the Stop button on the handles is pressed e Toggle the button to alternate be
12. become damaged or burred resulting in fabric damage as well as skipped stitches thread breakage or shredding Always change the needle if it has been hit bumped or pulled off center while maneuvering the machine about the quilt A slightly bent needle can be a major cause of skipped stitches Check for the proper size of needle for the work and thread being applied to the quilting operation Some battings and fabrics used in quilting may constrict or impede the thread passing through the front groove of the needle This diminishes the loop lift required for stitch formation Typically a larger needle will solve the problem however it has been found that certain smaller sizes of needles as well as the use of ball pointed needles solve some specific problems Position the needle properly to the needle bar Inspect the position of the needle to make sure the needle is at the 6 o clock position If you stand directly in front of the needle facing the bobbin case side of the machine you will see the entire needle eye directly facing you This is 6 o clock position Make sure 1 the needle is installed all the way into the needle bar to the needle stop hole in the needle bar 2 the long groove in the needle is toward the front bobbin case side and 3 the scarf scooped out part of the back of the needle is toward the back handwheel The needle can sometimes be rotated to 5 o clock slightly right or 7 o clock slightly left to a
13. it stops in place Push inward until it clicks 5 NOTE Do not use the lever on the bobbin case for this installation Use the latch lever only for removal of the bobbin case A CAUTION Turn off the power switch while inserting the bobbin case or anytime the hands are near the needle area To bring the bobbin thread to the top of the quilt 1 After the machine is threaded locate needle up needle down button on the left handle 2 While firmly holding the tail of the needle thread press the needle up down button with your free hand to bring the needle back to the up position 3 Move the machine three to four inches while holding the needle thread The bobbin thread will pull to the top 4 Grasp the loop formed by the bobbin thread and pull it to the desired length Bobbin Tension The bobbin tension is the foundation tension for the entire machine www HandiQuilter com 02 10 2015 HQ Fusion User Manual 17 To test that bobbin tension is correct 1 Hold the bobbin case in the palm of your hand with the open end facing up 2 Wrap the thread around your index finger and while pulling up on the thread and wiggling the finger front to back not up and down which is not consistent the bobbin case should lift up on its side but not lift out of your hand If the bobbin case does not lift up onto its side tension is too loose and if it lifts out of your hand tension is too tight To adjust bobbin tension 1 Adju
14. rot which makes thread brittle Do not use poor quality thread or thread that is rotted or brittle Top and bobbin tensions not Check thread tension in top and bobbin for proper balance balanced For more information about adjusting tension see Bobbin and Thread Tension Adjustments The machine head has been Check that the machine is threaded correctly threaded incorrectly or thread spools are not positioned correctly Inspect for accidental double wrapping of thread on thread guides Inspect the thread mast making sure the eyelets of the mast are directly over the spools Inspect the vertical positioning of the thread cones Tipped cones can dramatically affect thread tension and can cause breakage Debris in tension discs e Inspect for particles and remove any fuzz or debris Bobbin rotation is not smooth e Change the bobbin The slightest hesitation of the bobbin rotation can be the cause of dramatic tension change and thread breakage Needle is burred bent or dull or e Change the needle at least once per quilt Make sure the needle installed incorrectly is installed to the top of the stop hole in the needle bar 38 HQ Fusion User Manual 02 10 2015 www HandiQuilter com Needle not suitable for thread Replace the needle to one better suited for the thread Use the proper size needle Hesitating too long at one point in Move more quickly so stitches don t overlap or build up When quilting motif starting the machin
15. tension discs are never open Therefore the thread must be pulled up or flossed between the tension discs or it will stay outside the discs and float without tension causing serious tension problems and or thread nests It is also possible to bend the needle while it is threaded if care is not taken while moving the machine around the quilt because the top tension is never released Optional Horizontal Spool Holder An optional horizontal spool holder is available for metallic and specialty threads wound on a spool not a cone The horizontal spool holder mounts on the laser stylus guide post on the top of the machine When using threads on the Horizontal Spool Holder skip thread guides A and B Thread the top hole only of the three hole thread guide C back to front Continue threading the machine as described in steps 3 through 7 above Bobbin and Thread Tension Adjustments To insert the bobbin Place the bobbin in the bobbin case so that the thread pulls off clockwise when viewing the open side 16 HQ Fusion User Manual 02 10 2015 www HandiQuilter com Slide the thread through the slot and under the tension spring leaving five to six inches pU of thread hanging loose Ten sion pring Do not lift the lever on bobbin case Fit the bobbin case onto the hook spindle in the machine Rotate the casing until the open throat keys into the alignment notch in the middle of the hook Push the casing in until

19. agnostics The Diagnostics Menu lists each of the diagnostics tests available to help identify certain problems with the HQ Fusion Press any of the diagnostics test buttons to perform that particular diagnostic test Then follow the instructions on the screen for the test Tension Press X to close this window or Settings to return to F Settings the Settings screen Motor Sensor Test Diagnostics The Motor Sensor test helps to determine whether there may be a problem with the HQ Fusion motor Motor Sensor Test Rotating the front or back hand wheel should result Passing Test in a pulsing audible beep If you get a constant Rugular pulsing beeps as you rotate F the hand wheel beep or no beep at all the test has failed and the machine should be inspected by a qualified Failing Test Handi Quilter repair technician A solid tone or no beeping at all as you rotate the handwheel Press X to close this window or Back to return to 3 i Diagnostics the Diagnostics Menu Needle Sensor Test The Needle Sensor test will indicate whether the needle position sensor is functioning properly Rotating the front or back hand wheel should result in a beep for half of a stitch cycle followed by no Diagnostics Needle Sensor Test Rotate the hand wheel Passing Test Solid beep for 1 3 of a stitch cycle beep for the other half If you hear a constant beep no beep for the rest of the cycle or no beep at all for a ful
20. ant to understand the basics of free motion quilting The HQ Fusion does not have feed dogs like domestic machines Therefore the fabric does not automatically feed under the hopping foot The operator should synchronize the speed as well as the movement of the machine to get an even consistent stitch In order to become comfortable with the free motion of the HQ Fusion users can begin with a few beginner techniques In Manual mode set the machine at a medium speed and begin moving it until you become accustomed to the resistance By moving the machine faster the stitches begin to elongate The stitch speed can either www HandiQuilter com 02 10 2015 HQ Fusion User Manual 33 be increased or the machine can be moved slower to get the stitches back to the desired length By moving the machine slower the stitches get shorter and can build up on top of each other breaking the thread or making it extremely difficult to remove the stitches if needed The stitch speed can be decreased while maintaining a constant motion with the machine to bring the stitches back to the desired length In Regulated mode set the machine to your desired stitch length Begin moving the machine to become accustomed to the resistance The machine motor slows down or speeds up to maintain a consistent stitch length according to how quickly or slowly you move the machine Moving the machine too fast or in radical or jerky movements defeats the benefits of stitch regula
21. b 10 year Limited Manufacturer s Warranty HQ warrants the sewing head is free of casting or machining imperfections causing product failure This warranty does not extend to mechanical or electronic electrical parts which are covered under a separate warranty or consequential damage to the head caused by mechanical or electronic electrical part failures beyond their warranty period c 5 year Mechanical Warranty For any mechanical failure within this period manufacturer will provide free replacement parts customer pays for labor and shipping See warranty exclusions d 5 year electronic electrical warranty The electric electronic components are warranted to be free from manufacturing defects for five years from the date of purchase If any defect is reported within this period manufacturer will provide free replacement parts customer pays for labor and shipping The 5 year electronic electrical warranty will be invalid if the machine is left plugged into a power source when not in use The limited warranty stated in sections b c and d above shall be limited solely to the replacement of parts which in the opinion of HQ are defective in workmanship or material and are returned to HQ or an authorized repair facility or such other point or place that may be designated by HQ All other costs including cost of freight and shipment for repair under this warranty shall be the customer s costs This warranty shall be in force only for

51. tching Indicator When stitching the red indicator above the Needle Up arrow turns green This is especially helpful if you have switched to Precision mode which only begins to stitch when you move the machine after pressing Start on the handlebars In Precision mode when you press the Start button the indicator turns green indicating that as soon as you start moving the machine the machine will begin stitching When you press the Stop button the indicator turn red indicating that the needle will not move when you move the machine Needle Position A CAUTION Always make sure the stitching indicator is RED before working with your hands near the needle changing the needle replacing the bobbin etc to avoid unwanted stitching in your quilt or your hands If you leave the HQ Fusion in Precision mode with the green indicator on and do not move the machine for two minutes the system will time out and a message box will appear indicating that the system has stopped and you will need to press the Start button again to resume quilting Top Thread Tension Indicator As you adjust the top thread tension the current 8 Q tension value displays on the Main screen The value increases or decreases in increments of 5 as you turn the dial When you are happy with the quality of the stitches note the tension value for the type of thread you are using so you can easily set the top thread tension when you use this thread again in t
