5. our Faith we can cling to the old ways just as fiercely When I suggest to someone that a baby should wear ordinary clothes to be baptized in and only after Baptism receive the beautiful white garment a sign of their new Christian dignity I hear But that s not how my grandpar ents and parents did 1t Maybe not but isn t it better to give a deeper meaning to a symbol than just to carry on doing something which doesn t have any meaning other than that s the way it has always been You may have noticed the bookmarks in the pews which invite us to come back to the Sacrament of Reconciliation One person told me I couldn t go to Confession like that that s not the proper Act of Contrition What she meant of course was that it wasn t the one she had learnt as a child which had to be the one and only proper Act of Contrition Actually there isn t any proper Act of Contrition The Rite of Penance the instruction manual on how to celebrate the Sacrament says The penitent expresses sorrow for his her sins in these or similar words in other words you can say any thing you like as long as it expresses your genuine remorse and contrition The earliest Church celebrated the Eucharist a Greek word in Greek and only changed to Latin in the 4th century She adapted because her people had changed from those that the first Apostles had preached to When we changed from Latin to English in the 1960 s you d thin

11. con la oficina parroquial St Vincent de Paul 863 419 4819 Page 2 March 22 2015 I am writing this letter on the Feast of St Patrick All of us come from some religious tradition or other Our Faith for most of us is something that was handed down to us along with many other tra ditions like the way we celebrate Christmas or some other great event in the year or the traditions around births deaths and marriages In one culture things are done in a certain way that can seem quite strange to those coming from another tradition and yet they blend together Our nation is a strik ing example of that way that one culture can unite with another to produce something Only a couple of generations ago we had Polish Italian Irish neighborhoods and so on and now they have melded together to become something new Some may regret the passing of the old ways and there is certainly a lot to be said for the maintaining of some of the great traditions that have stood the test of time But the need to come together to find a common way or a way that we can all be comfortable with means that things will change over the years And it can lead to some amusing outcomes In America it is taken completely as gospel that everyone in Ireland eats Corned Beef and Cab bage on St Patrick s Day In fact it s highly unlikely that they would do any such thing Far more probably they will be having beef or lamb with roasted potatoes and gravy When it comes to
