Chalk Open on Wednesday afternoons 1 00 3 00 p m JHE beginning June 25 2014 Campout in your backyard Students in grades 5 through 8 at Daniel Morgan Middle School have been busy beau tifying the hallways with large scale tile murals that exist as permanent testament to their creativity Through a collaborative effort with visual artist Beryl Solla and the Virginia Muse um of Fine Arts the murals have been ex panding over the walls outside the school s auditortum over the past several years The initial murals flank the doors of the auditori um subsequent murals have grown to wrap around the large previously empty corridor DMMS administration and staff are extremely supportive of the project and hope it will con tinue until the space is completely wrapped in murals Beryl Solla professor of art at Piedmont Vir ginia Community College works with groups of students to first develop a concept for the art work and then guide them through the entire mural process from start to finish The murals reflect the community of DMMS as well as the surrounding community of Winchester The images chosen by the students include apples music notes footballs tacos and just about everything in between The murals are active vibrant and diverse a fitting reflection of the many students who had a hand in creating them Page 5 Page 6 Summer School mer Learning Daniel Morgan Middle School 2014 Summer Progr

18. e Parenting lips for Summer Eric Cusick 8th Grade Guidance Counselor For 180 days a year school administrators teachers school counselors and other staff members work with students on how to ex press their feelings in appropriate ways how to deal with their anger and how to cope with stressful situations But what happens when school is not in session especially during the extended summer break As a parent you are the most influential person in your children s lives and how you work through family is sues can have a positive influence on behav ior throughout the family as well as the school Following are some parenting tips to work on throughout the summer months Sibling conflicts Stay on the sidelines of sibling arguments unless there is bloodshed and help your children learn to appropriately express their negative feelings At my school students learn to use the magic sentence The sentence includes phrases such as I feel because I want you to and Iam willing to Example I feel angry because you called me a name and I want you to stop I am willing to stop calling you names Using the magic sentence requires practice and parental guidance It may feel contrived at first but if your children and you get into the habit of thinking and stating your feelings rather than acting out you ll find it opens up the lines of communication and decreases outbursts Encourage your child
