4. the crank shaft 1 Distributor Wire Harness Spark Plug Gaps For street applications use your engine manufacturer s specifications For racing applications start with your engine manufcturer s specifications then experiment with and closely monitor various gaps to achieve maxi mum perofrmance Electric Welding Unplug the distributor wire harness before welding on the vehicle Optional Active Power Filter Part No 29351 Voltage spikes voltage transients power surges are associated with noisy electrical systems from electrical defects such as worn alternator brushes corroded or oxidized electrical connections and similar electrical problems Voltage spikes damage the UNILITE Ignition Module Voltage spikes are clam ped and regulated by the optional Active Power Filter from damaging the UNILITE Ignition Module Step 4 Remove the distributor cap from the distributor Do not remove the spark plug wires or coil wire at this time The rotor blade should point to the mark made on the distributor housing from Step 2 If it is not turn the engine crankshaft in the direction of rotation one full turn repeating Step 3 until the timing mark lines up again with the TDC mark on the timing tab NOTE Once you are finished with Step 4 DO NOT turn the crankshaft until the new distributor is installed Step 5 Note the direction the rotor is pointing If you are replacing a vacuum advance distributor note the direction the vac

FORM 1297 REV B 9 99 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE Mallo y COMP 9000 SERIES UNILITE DISTRIBUTOR NOTICE THE COMP 9000 UNILITE DISTRIBUTOR SERIES NOS 91 AND 93 ARE LEGAL IN CALIFORNIA ONLY FOR RACING VEHICLES WHICH MAY NEVER BE USED UPON A HIGHWAY IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CONTACT THE FACTORY IMPORTANT Before starting the installation of the UNILITE Ignition System make sure that the vehicle is equipped with an ignition ballast resistor or loom resistance wire in the wire between the ignition switch and the coil terminal One easy way to find the ignition ballast resistor is to check the service manual for your vehicle You can test your stock ignition system voltage while the engine is at idle at the coil terminal If the measured voltage is within 1 volt of battery voltage an ignition ballast resistor must be installed in the wire from the ignition switch Example Vehicles with a Ford TFI or Delco HEI require adding an ignition ballast resistor in the wire from the ignition switch If you find your vehicle is not equipped with an ignition ballast resistor install a Mallory Ignition Ballast Resistor Part No 700 in series in the wire from the ignition switch Failure to use an ignition ballast resistor will result in the eventual destruction of the UNILITE Ignition Module Exception If your vehicle is equipped with a HYFIRE Electronic Ignition Control or similar aftermarket ignition control use ignition ba

11. buidor original Si su veh culo est equipado con adelanto al vac o coloque el distribuidor UNILITE en el motor con el rotor y la c mara de vac o apuntando en la misma direcci n general que el distribuidor original Si el distribuidor antiguo no tiene una c mara al vac o coloque el dis tribuidor UNILITE en el motor con el rotor apuntando en la misma direc ci n general del distribuidor original y apunte la c mara al vac o de tal forma que permita el movimiento necesario para la sincronizaci n NOTA El distribuidor UNILITE debe estar completamente asentado en el motor Para que el distribuidor UNILITE se asiente completamente puede ser necesario girar el accionador de la bomba de aceite o el cig e al del motor dos vueltas completas en la direcci n de rotaci n hasta que la marca de sincronizaci n quede alineada nuevamente con la marca TDC en la leng eta de sincronizaci n Paso 3 Gire el armaz n del distribuidor UNILITE en direcci n opuesta a la rotaci n del rotor hasta que la ranura m s cercana del obturador de la rueda del rotor est aproximadamente en el centro de la ptica del m du lo UNILITE Coloque en su lugar el sujetador del distribuidor y aj stelo un poco dej ndolo lo suficientemente suelto como para poder girar el dis tribuidor UNILITE Haga una marca en el armaz n del distribuidor donde apunte el rotor Paso 4 Instale la tapa del distribuidor UNILITE Saque de la tapa del distribuidor o

13. el distribuidor Paso 3 Gire el cig efial del motor en la direcci n de rotaci n hasta que la marca de sincronizaci n se alinee con la marca del centro muerto de arriba TDC en la leng eta de sincronizaci n Para encontrar estas ubicaciones con sulte un manual de servicio NOTA Sacar las buj as puede hacer que el cig efial gire m s f cil mente Paso 4 Saque la tapa del distribuidor Todav a no saque los cables de las buj as ni de la bobina La hoja del rotor debe estar sefialando la marca que se hizo en el armaz n del distribuidor en el paso 2 Si no es as gire el cig e al del motor una vuelta completa en la direcci n de rotaci n repetici n del paso 3 hasta que las marcas de sincronizaci n est n alineadas nueva mente con la marca del TDC en la leng eta de sincronizaci n NOTA Una vez que haya concluido con el paso 4 YA NO gire el cig e al hasta que haya instalado el nuevo distribuidor Paso 5 Tome nota de la direcci n a la que est apuntando el rotor Si est reem plazando un distribuidor con adelanto al vac o tome nota de la direcci n a la que est apuntando la c mara al vac o Saque el sujetador del dis tribuidor y saque el distribuidor del motor INSTALACI N DEL DISTRIBUIDOR UNILITE Paso 1 Saque la tapa del distribuidor para preparar el distribuidor UNILITE Paso 2 Coloque el distribuidor UNILITE en el motor con el rotor apuntando en la misma direcci n general que el distri
14. ior dis tribuidor no ven a con adelanto al vac o conecte una manguera de vac o al puerto de salida para vac o del carburador Operaci n del tac metro Conecte el o los cables de acuerdo con las recomendaciones del fabricante del tac metro ARRANQUE DEL MOTOR CUIDADO Antes de encender el motor aseg rese de que no haya her ramientas cables ni otros objetos en el camino de las piezas m viles del motor ni tampoco calor excesivo Paso 1 Verifique otra vez todos los cables y todas las conexiones para asegurarse de que est n bien Inspeccione y limpie o cambie las buj as Si cambia las buj as use los tipos recomendados por el fabricante del motor Aplicaciones con adelanto al vac o Desconecte la manguera de vac o que va a la c mara de vac o del distribuidor UNILITE en el carburador y conecte temporalmente este adaptador del carburador Paso 2 Conecte una luz de sincronizaci n Encuentre el rea desde la cual se vean mejor las marcas de sincronizaci n Paso 3 Arranque el motor Si no arranca gire el distribuidor en incrementos peque os en el sentido de las agujas del reloj 0 en sentido contrario hasta que arranque Al girar el armaz n del distribuidor no sobrepase los diez grados en cualquier direcci n Paso 4 Calibre la sincronizaci n siguiendo las recomendaciones del fabricante del motor luego ajuste el sujetador del distribuidor Compruebe que la sin cronizaci n sea la correcta Si la sincronizaci
15. ipped with vacuum advance connect a vacuum hose to a ported vacuum outlet on the carburetor Tachometer operation Connect wire or wires as recommended by the actual tachometer manufacturer STARTING ENGINE CAUTION Be sure all tools wires and miscellaneous objects are clear of moving engine parts and extreme heat before starting the engine Step 1 Recheck all wires and connections to make sure they are correct Check and clean or replace spark plugs If replacing spark plugs use types rec ommended by the engine manufacturer Vacuum advance applications Disconnect the vacuum hose to UNILITE Distributor vacuum chamber at the carburetor and temporarily plug this carburetor fitting Step 2 Connect a timing light Find the area with the best view of the timing marks Step 3 Start the engine If it fails to start rotate the distributor in small increments clockwise or counterclockwise until engine starts Do not exceed more than ten degrees of distributor housing rotation in either direction Step 4 Set timing as recommended by engine manufacturer then tighten distrib utor hold down clamp Make sure timing is still correct If timing has moved repeat this procedure Step 5 Vacuum advance applications Reconnect the vacuum hose between the UNILITE Distributor vacuum chamber and the carburetor COMP 9000 SERIES UNILITE DISTRIBUTOR TUNE UP PARTS APPLICATION DISTRIBUTOR CAP WIRE RETAINER ADAPTER SHIELD ROTOR S
16. llast resistors and wiring procedures as stated in the instructions for the partic ular ignition control Parts Included in this kit 1 COMP 9000 Series UNILITE Distributor GENERAL INFORMATION Advance Curve All COMP 9000 Series UNILITE Distributors have 24 crankshaft degrees of mechanical advance at 3 200 RPM Ignition Coils The UNILITE Ignition System is designed to work with most stock igni tion coils and aftermarket high performance ignition coils For optimum performance use a Mallory PROMASTER Coil Part No 29440 or 29625 or Mallory Chrome Electronic Ignition Coil Part No 29216 Spark Plug Wires To prevent false triggering and the possibility of premature ignition fail ures use suppression type spark plug wire We recommend spiral core ignition wire such as Mallory PRO SIDEWINDER Ignition Wire OLD DISTRIBUTOR REMOVAL Step 1 Disconnect the trigger wire from the coil terminal Step 2 Locate the spark plug wire on the original distributor cap that the engine timing is set from See a service manual for these locations Mark the dis tributor cap and the distributor housing in line with this spark plug wire position on the distributor cap Step 3 Turn the engine crankshaft in the direction of rotation until the timing mark lines up with the top dead center TDC mark on the timing tab See a ser vice manual for these locations NOTE Removing the spark plugs may make it easier to turn

25. uum chamber is pointing Remove the distributor hold down clamp and remove the distributor from the engine UNILITE DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION Step 1 Prepare the UNILITE Distributor by removing the distributor cap Step 2 Place the UNILITE Distributor in the engine with the rotor pointing in the same general direction as the original distributor If equipped with vacuum advance place the UNILITE Distributor in the engine with the rotor and vacuum chamber pointing in the same general direction as the original distributor If the old distributor did not have a vacuum chamber place the UNILITE Distributor in the engine with the rotor pointing in the same general direc tion as the original distributor did and point the vacuum chamber in a direction that will allow movement for timing purposes NOTE The UNILITP Distributor must be fully seated into the engine It may be necessary to turn the oil pump drive or turn the engine crank shaft in the direction of rotation two full turns until the timing mark lines up again with the TDC mark on the timing tab to allow the UNILITE Distributor to seat fully Step 3 Rotate the UNILITE Distributor housing in the opposite direction of rotor rotation until the nearest slot on the rotor s shutter wheel is approximate ly in the center of the optics of the UNILITE Module Put the distributor hold down clamp in place and tighten slightly leaving it loose enough to turn the UNILITE Dis
