WS WEEKLY EDITION ISSUE 29 WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 26TH 2014 GALLERY WEEKEND IN May BY ROXANA AZIMI Parisian galleries have been toying with the idea of a Gallery Weekend for years bringing together the best that the capital has to offer However with the growing importance of the FIAC over the last three years the urgency waned Last year though a former manager for FLAC Griana Schwaan tried to start the ball rolling but to no avail to the point that certain galleries who had fought for such an event threw in the towel This was without counting on the proactive approach of Marion Papillon co director of Galerie Claudine Papillon in Paris who spent a year gradually building up her project Choices Collectors Weekend Her persuasive skills convinced the Galeries Mode d Emploi association and the professional committee for art galleries to provide sponsorship for the event The French Institute will also play its part by inviting foreign professionals to the event My gallery was one that was game for the Gallery Weekend devised by Oriana I think that Paris has an important art scene that is continuing to develop thanks to the FIAC the Palais de Tokyo and La Maison Rouge confided Marion Papillon It was important to show that Parisian galleries are capable of supporting an art scene and doing things together We couldn t say it s too late it s not the right time it s complicated We had to go for it It was not yet howe
