17. elf as a student who is from Sri Lanka presently working on my master s studies in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology Faculty of Agriculture University of the Ryukyus under the supervision of the Professor Yoshihiro Tokashiki I am studying on the efficient and effective utilization of different waste materials for the production of synthetic soil aggregate as a plant growth material and a soil amendment to improve physical and chemical properties of the low productive soils in Okinawa Japan As you all know in the present context due to rapidly escalating world population and its industrial expansion wastes are generating at alarming rate More over these waste accumulations are a serious threat to the sustainable exploitation of natural resources and these waste accretion causes environmental hazards such as water pollution soil pollution air pollution severe climatic changes etc Present waste disposal methods are land filling incineration and ocean dumping etc But there are limitations in these methods Therefore alternative effective waste disposal methods should be find out Consequently an attempt was done to develop synthetic soil aggregates by using different waste materials as a plant growth medium Here several aggregate types were produced by utilizing different waste materials Utilized wastes materials In our study were coal fly ash paper waste starch waste palm waste etc These produced aggregates can be
