USBBD USB 2 0 socket for USB memory sticks as storage medium for BD Live functions and playing back audio and video files This USB socket can be used to play DivX WMA JPEG or MP3 files The method of operation is described in the Chapter Operating the disc player media player The USB storage medium can draw power from the USB socket provided that the device s current drain is within the USB norm lt 500 mA Hard disks with a current drain of gt 500 mA can also be connected provided that they are powered by their own mains PSU To use BD Live you must connect a memory stick with a capacity of at least 1 GB to the USB socket The memory medium must be formatted using the FAT16 or FAT32 file system Q Socket for stereo headphones with an impedance of at least 50 Q Phones headphone When headphones are plugged in the loudspeakers connected to the K8 in the main room are automatically switched off When headphones are in use the move button menu loudspeaker and headphone modes can be pressed to switch on the Dolby headphone function which provides spatial surround reproduction via headphones The use of headphones Continuous listening to programme material via earphones or head phones at very high volume can result in permanent hearing loss You can avoid damaging your health by not listening via headphones or ear phones at high levels for long periods Mic Microphone socket barrel socket on unders

BluRay disc contains a Select menu this will now be displayed on the TV screen The integral screen shows the message INFO e Use the numeric buttons or the cursor buttons C lt gt VW CA to select your desired point in the menu i e to highlight your choice e To activate or implement a selected menu point press the button e You can quit the Select menu by briefly pressing the button on the front panel remote control once more 39 General Information on the Streaming Client Select Lists Operating the Streaming Client The T A K8 includes what is known as a Streaming Client This is a new class of playback devices for media content providing a means of playing music which is stored on a vast variety of sources These sources may be an iPod or a USB hard disc connected directly to the K8 but they may also be thousands of miles away e g Internet radio station The Streaming Client can access such remote sources via a home network and the Internet The Streaming Client must be registered to your network before it can receive music data via your home network and the Internet To accomplish this you have to enter some data relating to your home network The process for setting up the network connection is explained later in the chapter entitled Network configuration The K8 Streaming Client can access the following sources Local sources Remote sources direct connection via home network

7. and the alteration in volume becomes audible Here you select the loudspeaker group to be used for the alarm The available options are main room 2 zone 3 zone and 4 zone if it is present in the system In this menu point you can determine how the internal clock is to be set RDS If you select the menu point RDS you can select a radio station from the Favourites list using the CA CYW_ buttons If you choose the Any setting the time of day will be read automatically from the RDS signal provided by the currently set station and will be adopted by the machine this occurs at night and about three minutes after switching on If a station is selected the time of day is automatically read out from the RDS signal at night If the selected station is the current listening source then the time of day is also taken from the machine when it is switched on This only works if a good RDS signal can be received It is not possible to adjust the time of day manually The time of day can be set manually in the menu point Set time of day The time of day can be set manually in the menu point Set time of day Summer time Winter time Manual adjustment of the internal clock to the correct time Initially the adjustment occurs slowly but if you hold the button pressed in the rate of change increases Manual adjustment is only possible if you have already selected Summer or Winter in the menu point Clock

In the menu select the point BD Live Internet Access Ensure that Limit Access or Always Allow Access is selected Insert the prepared USB memory stick If there is less than 100 MByte of free space on the memory stick select the option Clear BD Storage This action erases any data present on the memory stick and ensures that there is adequate free memory Call up the Network menu in the Main menu of the K8 Enter the correct network settings i e those matching the settings of your home network your network router and your ISP Internet Service Provider 8 Carry out the Connectivity Test TRUON No Your system must pass the Connectivity Test otherwise there is no Internet connection and the BD Live Internet functions cannot be used Although downloaded BD Live content is stored permanently on the USB memory stick you cannot use the content without the corresponding BD Live disc in the machine For this reason always place the appropriate BluRay disc in the player when you wish to use BD Live Some BD Live content has a limited usage time i e it lapses after a certain period Once the permitted usage time is over you can no longer use the material From time to time it is therefore necessary to free up the USB stick of data which you no longer use or which can no longer be used The unwanted data can be erased using the sub function Clear BD storage in the System menu

13. is equipped with an automatic level dependent volume control system LOUDNESS designed to compensate for the frequency dependent sen sitivity of the ear at very low volume caused by the physiology of the human auditory system This set up option switches the level dependent volume control on and off Dynamics This menu point can be used to limit the dynamic range of audio reproduction i e to reduce the difference in volume between very quiet and very loud pas sages Set up options Nightmode Greatly reduced audio dynamic range Quiet passages are amplified significantly loud passages are considerably quieter This setting is particularly suitable for listening at low volume e g when neighbours must not be disturbed Normal Medium Quiet passages are amplified slightly whereas extreme volume peaks are reduced This setting is ideal for normal listening at room volume Full Full dynamic range without compression Since quiet pas sages are not lifted at this setting it is important not to select too low a listening volume otherwise very quiet passages may not be properly audible There is no automatic reduc tion in the volume of loud effects i e very high maximum volume may be obtained at this setting If the Dolby Volume function is activated see next page this menu item is not available because the dynamic range is set automatically in this case Lip Sync sound delay Some video monitors especially 100 Hz
14. or Internet USB memory sticks and Internet radio USB hard discs iPod connected to the USB IN socket NAS server with UPnP AV server USB A2 iPod plays audio files only PC with UPnP AV server The media content formats which the K8 can reproduce are very wide ranging and extend from compressed formats such as MP3 WMA AAC and OGG Vorbis to high quality non compressed data formats such as FLAC and WAV which are thoroughly audiophile in nature A full listing of all possible data and playlist formats is included in the Specification which you will find in the Appendix to these instructions Since virtually no read or data errors occur when electronic memory media are accessed the potential reproduction quality is even higher than that of CD The quality level may even exceed that of SACD and DVD Audio Audio data can be played back digitally from an iPod connected to the USB A1 USB A2 iPod socket i e the high quality D A converters of the K8 are used for the digital analogue conversion of the music signals This guarantees highest possible reproduction quality of the audio files stored on the iPod If you wish to play video files stored on an iPod please use the analogue AV iPod input Audio IN iPod and control the iPod as described in the Chapter entitled Operating the iPod Digital audio output is supported by the following iPod models iPod nano all models iPod classic all models iPod t

17. the FM100 remote control system please point the handset towards the receiver There must be no obstacle which blocks the line of sight between the FM100 and the remote control receiver in the K8 The function of the remote control system can also be adversely affected if the K8 is set up behind glass cabinet doors Certain types of lamp including fluorescent and energy saving bulbs cause interference to the remote control system It is essential to avoid such light falling directly on the receiver otherwise the effective range of the system may be markedly reduced If there is no direct line of sight connection between the remote control handset and the K8 e g machine installed in a cabinet an alternative is to use an E2000 external remote control receiver which is connected to the socket marked E2000 MAIN on the back panel The receiver can be set up in any position within the range of effect of the remote control handset Screen All the information regarding the machine s status the current music track and list navigation is displayed on the graphic screen of the K8 The display is context sensitive and its content may vary according to the capabilities and facilities of the service or medium currently selected The essential information is highlighted on the screen in context sensitive form Additional information is shown above and below the main data in the form of symbols The table below lists and explains

19. to previous point to the next higher menu level Confirms input Selecting a menu point Selects the previous point within a list Selects the next point within a list Confirmation button when entering data 44 The iPod as video source Use with an iPhone Special features when operating an iPhone The fundamental rule is that the K8 can reproduce the video content stored on some iPod models on a screen connected to the system as well as music The iPod must be connected with the cable from the accessories of the K8 to the analog iPod input The analog iPod input is selected by a long press of the C sct button on the remote control The method of operating the iPod when playing video material varies slightly from model to model and it is possible that not all video functions will be supported If you cannot access all the video functions of your iPod using the remote control handset or if you only have remote control of the audio functions then we recommend that you use the iPod s controls to operate the system If you connect the iPod to the digital USB socket it is not possible to play back video content from the iPod as its output of this material is only in analogue form The K8 can also be used with an iPhone as source device Many models generate a warning regarding telephone use but this is not relevant to the K8 and can be ignored The first step is to select the iPhone as source with a long pres
20. types plasma screens and progressive scan monitors generate the picture with a slight delay In such cases this may result in loss of synchronisation between sound and picture Since various source devices feature different picture transmission processes analogue progressive SDI HDMI the sound delay may also be caused by the source device The Sound Delay menu point can be used to set a delay in sound reproduction in the range 0 500 ms with the aim of synchronising sound and picture perfectly lip syncing 16 Dolby Volume Dolby Volume is a new type of process which maintains an impression of con stant volume regardless of the source selected and the current programme material Dolby Volume eliminates the major fluctuations in volume level which can occur when for example advertisements appear on the TV Dolby Volume also automatically matches the reproduced frequency response to suit the sensitivity of the human auditory system at low volumes The overall result is improved naturalness and comprehensibility when listening at low volume below the original volume Leveler The Leveler setting determines the extent to which the Dolby Volume function compensates for volume differences Off The Dolby Volume function is switched off High The function almost completely compensates for volume differences Medium The function compensates about half way for major jumps in volume Low Differences in volume are

It is possible to adjust the volume separately in the adjacent rooms or listening zones or in parallel with the main room All the controls and functions of the K8 which are frequently used are described in the first section of these operating instructions The second part Basic settings Installation Using the system for the first time covers connections and settings which are very seldom required they are generally required only when the machine is set up and used for the first time Here you will also find a detailed description of the network settings required for connecting the K8 to your home network For newcomers to networks we have prepared explanations of some of the important terms used in this technology and other background information in the Chapter Network Terminology K8 Multi Source System Controls All the important functions of the K8 can be operated using the buttons on the front panel Direct operating buttons are available for the basic functions such as source track selection whereas rarely needed functions are controlled using menus which are called up using the C sre C sys C _ buttons All information regarding the state of the machine the current track and the selected station are displayed on the screen the main items are displayed in highlighted form in a context sensitive manner and are clearly legible from some distance The following section describes in detail the functio

32. by a small percentage and to compensate for this by increasing the remainder of the image to fill the screen Since use of the Overscan function forfeits part of the picture content and also reduces the picture resolution slightly it should only be used for picture sources which produce blurred picture margins Overscan is only available for the analogue picture inputs as it produces untidy picture margins when used with HDMI AUTO 720p 1080i 1080p In this menu point you can adjust the resolution of the video signal generated by the K8 to match the resolution of your video monitor Auto 50 60 Setting the frame repeat rate of the video signal generated by the K8 If you select one of the set up options 50 Hz or 60 Hz the K8 generates the output signal at the set rate regardless of the source material In the Auto setting the K8 attempts to select the optimum frame rate setting to match the capabilities of the TV set connected to the system taking into account the source being reproduced In Auto mode it takes a few seconds longer to switch between video sources since the K8 first has to match the signal characteristics of the source with the capabilities of your TV set AUTO 1 1 Original V 33 H 33 V 33 H V 33 The term Aspect Ratio refers to the width height ratio of the reproduced pic ture The most common aspect ratios are 4 3 which is familiar from the early years of television and the 16 9 wide screen format in
