E RODS Hardware D 1 Insert the threaded end of contro rod up through the plastic bushing on the left side of handle assembly See figure 8 Thread the large T knob on the end of control rod 2 Insert the threaded end of handle adjustment rod up through the plastic bushing on the right side of handle assembly Thread the small T knob on the end of handle adjustment rod 3 Place flat washer then rubber washer on the hooked end of control rod Insert end of control rod into the indicator bracket on top of the shift cover and secure with hairpin clip See figure 9 4 With the handle adjustment rod beneath the handle assembly insert the hooked end of han dle adjustment rod into the positioner bracket as shown in figure 10 Secure with cotter pin bend ing ends of pin in opposite directions CHECKING THE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT IMPORTANT Service the engine with oil and gaso line before checking this adjustment Refer to the separate engine manual packed with your tiller a Position the tiller so the front counterweight is against a solid object such as a wall With the gear selection lever in NEUTRAL start the engine Refer to the separate engine manual b Standing on the right side of the tiller exam ine the belt inside the belt cover It should not be turning If the belt turns with the unit in neutral adjust by moving the hex nut below the cable bracket down a few turns See figure 11 Tighten

12. ance and flooding usually indicates that the air cleaner shoulc be ser viced To service the air cleaner refer to the separate engine manual packed with your unit IMPORTANT Never run your engine wilhout air cleaner completely assembled 12 The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap reset every 25 hours of engine operation Spark plug replacement is recommended at the start of each tiller season check engine manual for correct plug type and gap specification Clean the engine regularly with a cloth or brush Keep the cooling system blower housing area clean to permit proper air circulation which is essential to engine performance and life Be certain to remove all dirt and combustible debris from muffler area CLEANING THE TINE AREA Clean the underside of the tine shield after each use The dirt washes off the tines easier if washed off immediately instead of after it dries TIRES Recommended operating tire pressure is approxi mately 12 p s i check sidewall of tire for tire manu facturer s recommended pressure Maximum tire pressure under any circumstances is 30 p s i Equal tire pressure should be maintained on both tires When installing a tire to the rim be certain rim is clean and free of rust Lubricate both the tire and rim generously Never inflate to over 30 p s i to seat beads A BELT REPLACEMENT A CAUTION Do not use an off the shelf belt Your tiller has been engineered with a belt made of spe
13. cial material Kevlar Tensile for longer life and better performance It should not be replaced with an off the shelf belt If belt replacement is required order belt or belts by part number from your nearest authorized dealer Part No 754 0434 V Belt 1 Disconnect and ground the spark plug wire against the engine 2 Remove the belt cover from the left side of the tiller as follows See figure 17 a Remove two self tapping screws and flat washers from the top of belt cover b Remove the hex cap nut and flat washer from the side of the belt cover Remove the hex nut and flat washer at the bottom of the front of the cover WARNING Excessive pressure over 30 p s i when seating beads may cause tire rim assembly to burst with force suf ficient to cause serious injury Self Tapping Screws Flat Washers Belt Cover Hex Nut Flat Washer FIGURE 17 3 Remove the hex bolt belt keeper located beneath the engine pulley See figure 18 4 Remove belt Reassemble new belt following instructions in reverse order NOTE Upon reassembly make certain the belt is routed over the idler pulley and inside of belt keepers by engine pulley See figure 18 Belt Keeper a 7 fi LT f fi SET Engine Pulley Hex Bolt Belt Keeper FIGURE 18 OFF SEASON STORAGE If the tiller will not be used for a period longer than 30 days the following steps should be taken to prepare the tiller for storage
14. e of the tiller It is used to select NEUTRAL REVERSE or one of the FORWARD modes see below Pull or push the handle so that the indicator on top of shift cover points to the operating mode desired See figure 12 NEUTRAL Transmission is in neutral REVERSE Reverse wheel drive FORWARD Modes Wheels Forward Forward wheel drive only Tines Reverse Forward wheel drive and reverse tine drive Forward wheel and tine drive WARNING Make certain unit is in NEUTRAL when starting the engine CLUTCH LEVER The clutch lever is located on the left handle See figure 13 Squeezing the clutch lever against the han dle engages the wheel and tine drive mechanisms DEPTH STAKE The depth bar controls the tilling depth Refer to How to Use Your Tiller section on page 10 HANDLE ADJUSTMENT See Figure 12 The handle may be adjusted to be in line with the tiller or swung to the left or right so the operator is not walking in the freshly tilled soil Tines Forward To adjust the handle position from side to side pull the handle adjustment lever back pivot the tiller handle to desired position and release the lever The handle may also be adjusted to the height desired Loosen the handle height adjustment lock a few turns Pivot handle up or down to desired position Tighten lock OPERATION NOTE Engine is shipped without oil WARNING Before operating the iller be A certain to read How to Use
15. e shields in their lowest position For further depth raise the depth stake and side shields and make one or two more passes over the area 3 When tilling loose soil depth stake may be raised to its highest position use bottom adjustment hole to give the deepest tilling depth Raise the side shields to their highest position 4 To transport tiller lower the depth stake use top adjustment hole To adjust the depth stake remove the clevis pin and hairpin clip See figure 14 Move the depth stake to the desired setting To adjust the side shields remove the wing nuts See figure 15 Place side shield in position desired Replace wing nuts and tighten securely To operate the tiller 1 Select the depth stake setting 2 Start engine as instructed on page 10 3 Move gear selection handle to one of the forward modes or reverse Use the reverse tine drive when tilling virgin ground sod or hard soil Use the forward tine drive when cultivating or tilling soft ground IMPORTANT When using the forward tine drive lower the depth stake use a shallower tilling depth to make certain the tines do not run across the ground A WARNING Do not move the gear selec tion handle with the wheels or tines engaged Make certain the unit is stopped completely before changing the gear selection 11 4 Squeeze the clutch lever against the handle to engage the wheels and tines NOTE Make certain the gear selection indicator i
16. lacks and shirt Shirt and slacks that cover the arms an i legs and steel toed shoes are recommended Do not wear k ose fitting clothes or jewelry and secure hair so it is above shoulder length They can be caught in moving parts Neve operate a unit in bare feet sandals or sneakers Wear gloves vhen feed ing material in the chipper chute or shredder hopper Operate tiller only in daylight or good artificial light Do not start tiller unless the shift lever if providec is in the neutral N position Do not allow anyone to stand or walk in front of iller when starting or running engine Do not place feet or hands on or near the tines wh n starting the engine or while the engine is running Never attempt to make depth bar tine width cable handle or wheel adjustments while the engine is running Do not leave the tiller unattended with the engine running Before attempting to remove rocks bricks and otter objects from tines stop the engine and be sure the tines ha e stopped completely Disconnect the spark plug wire and mcve it away from the spark plug If your machine should start making an unusual nois or vibra tion immediately stop the engine and allow the niachine to come to a complete stop Disconnect the spark plu j wire and move it away from the spark plug Take the followinr steps Inspect for damage Repair or replace any damaged parts Check for any loose parts and tighten to assure continued safe

18. oose parts included with unit i e owner s manual etc 3 Cut along dotted lines and lay carton down flat 4 Remove packing material 5 Roll or slide unit out of carton Check carton thoroughly for loose parts 6 Extend control cable and lay on the floor Be careful not to bend or kink control cable 7 Remove page 4 from this manual and lay out the hardware according to the illustration for identifi cation ATTACHING THE DEPTH STAKE ASSEMBLY Hardware A 1 Tip the tiller forward so it rests on front counter weight See figure 1 2 Raise the tine shield hinge flap assembly Insert the depth stake assembly between the two shoulder boits under the tine shield and up through the tine shield assembly as shown in figure 1 3 Insert clevis pin through the tine shield and depth stake assemblies Secure with hairpin clip 4 Insert hex bolt into the top hole of the depth stake assembly Place flat washer onto the hex bolt and thread T knob onto the hex bolt See figure 1 Tighten securely 5 Tip the tiller back down so it rests on the tines ATTACHING THE HANDLE ASSEMBLY Handle Hardware B Assembly Slot Flange Nut 1 Place cupped washer onto hex bolt crown side of Handle 9 washer goes against the bolt Place hex nut Pivot WS retainer bracket on hex bolt using the round hole Bracket in retainer bracket O e Trip 2 Place handle assembly in position in the handle pc Mm pivot br
19. readed casing as far as it will go 2 Slip the wire through the slot on the cable bracket on the left handle Push the end of the casing up through the cable bracket Rethread the hex nut on the end of the cable casing Do not tighten at Se this time See figure 4 Cable Bracket FIGURE 4 FIGURE 5 FIGURE 6 FIGURE 7 3 Hook the barrel end of the cable into the cable hold down Slide the cable around in the slot as shown in figure 5 4 Pull the cable upwards to obtain slack lift the clutch grip and insert the cable hold down into the clutch grip Secure with self tapping screw 4 See figure 6 5 With the clutch lever released in the up posi tion adjust the bottom nut at the cable bracket so there is 1 2 of slack in the control wire as shown in figure 7 Tighten the upper nut against the bracket Squeeze the clutch lever against the handle The control wire should now be straight NOTE Do not overtighten control wire Too much tension may cause it to break WARNING Be certain to check the clutch cable adjustment as instructed on page 7 of your owner s guide before operating the tiller 6 Secure drive cable to left handle using cable tie Refer to figure 8 Cut off excess end of cable tie Handle Assembly Nd oN Cak FIGURE 8 Flat Washer FIGURE 9 FIGURE 10 le Tie Con rol Rod Control Rod ATTACHING TH
20. s correctly positioned before engaging the clutch han dle If it is between gears the engine will stall To transport tiller do not engage the tines Select the wheel drive only A For best results it is recommended the garden be tilled twice lengthwise then widthwise to pulverize the soil WARNING Do not push down on the handles so that the wheels are lifted off the ground while using the reverse tine drive or the tiller could move backward and cause personal injury ADJUSTMENTS HANDLE ADJUSTMENT The handle may be adjusted to be in line with the tiller or swung to the left or right The handle height may also be adjusted Refer to the Control section for details of handle adjustment BELT TENSION ADJUSTMENT Periodic adjustment of the belt tension may be required due to normal stretch and wear on the belt Adjustment is needed if the tines or wheels seem to hesitate while turning but the engine maintains the same speed To adjust to the tension on the belt refer to clutch adjustment information in Checking the Clutch Adjustment section of the Assembly Instructions THROTTLE ADJUSTMENT To adjust throttle control lever loosen or tighten wing nut until throttle control lever moves with some resis tance and still remains in desired position when engine is running See figure 16 FIGURE 16 CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT A Never make unnecessary adjustments The factory settings are correct for mos
