TIP If a torque wrench is not available when installing a spark plug a good estimate of the correct torque is 1 4 1 2 turn past finger tight However the spark plug should be tightened to the speci fied torque as soon as possible 4 Install the spark plug cap PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT EAU19672 Canister for California only CARB CARB N JN FROM OQO Q FUEL TAN LS a CANISTER TO ATMOSPHERE This model is equipped with a canister to prevent the discharging of fuel vapor into the atmosphere Check each hose connection Check each hose and canister for cracks or damage Replace if dam aged Make sure the vent hose is not blocked Clean it if necessary 7 12 EAU19907 Engine oil and oil filter car tridge The engine oil level should be checked before each ride In addition the oil must be changed and the oil filter car tridge replaced at the intervals speci fied in the periodic maintenance and lubrication chart To check the engine oil level 1 Place the vehicle on a level sur face and hold it in an upright posi tion A slight tilt to the side can result in a false reading 2 Start the engine warm it up for several minutes and then turn it off 3 Wait a few minutes until the oil set tles and then check the oil level through the check window located at the bottom right side of the crankcase TIP The engine oil should be between the minimum and max

4. tion circuit cut off system See page 4 19 INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS EAU12880 Shift pedal P n KJ 1 Shift pedal The shift pedal is located on the left side of the engine and is used in com bination with the clutch lever when shifting the gears of the 5 speed con stant mesh transmission equipped on this motorcycle TIP Use your toes or heel to shift up and your toes to shift down EAU12890 Brake lever 1 Brake lever The brake lever is located at the right handlebar grip To apply the front brake pull the lever toward the handle bar grip 4 8 EAU12941 Brake pedal 1 Brake pedal The brake pedal is on the right side of the motorcycle To apply the rear brake press down on the brake pedal EAU13121 Fuel tank cap 1 Fuel tank cap lock cover 2 Unlock 3 A mark To remove the fuel tank cap Slide the lock cover open insert the key into the lock and then turn it 1 4 turn clockwise The lock will be released and the fuel tank cap can be removed To install the fuel tank cap 1 Insert the fuel tank cap into the tank opening with the key inserted in the lock and with the A mark facing forward 2 Turn the key counterclockwise to the original position remove it and then close the lock cover INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS TIP The fuel tank cap cannot be installed unless the key is in the lock In addition the key cannot be remove

7. 2 Remove the air valve cap 1 Shock absorber assembly air valve cap 4 18 3 Check the air pressure with the air pressure gauge included in the owner s tool kit 4 To increase the spring rate and thereby harden the suspension in crease the air pressure with an air pump To decrease the spring rate and thereby soften the suspen sion decrease the air pressure by pushing the valve stem down Spring rate Minimum soft Air pressure 0 kPa 0 kgf cm2 0 psi Standard Air pressure 0 kPa 0 kgf cm2 0 psi Maximum hard Air pressure 400 kPa 4 0 kgf cm 57 psi ECA11090 NOTICE Never exceed the maximum air pres sure otherwise the oil seal may be come damaged 5 Securely install the air valve cap EAU15301 Sidestand The sidestand is located on the left side of the frame Raise the sidestand or lower it with your foot while holding the vehicle upright TIP The built in sidestand switch is part of the ignition circuit cut off system which cuts the ignition in certain situations See further down for an explanation of the ignition circuit cut off system The vehicle must not be ridden with the sidestand down or if the side stand cannot be properly moved up or does not stay up otherwise the sidestand could contact the ground and distract the operator resulting in a possible loss of control Yamaha s ignition circuit cut off system has been designed to assist the operator in ful

Always obey the speed limit and never travel faster than warrant ed by road and traffic conditions e Always signal before turning or changing lanes Make sure that other motorists can see you The posture of the operator and passenger is important for proper control e The operator should keep both hands on the handlebar and both feet on the operator foot rests during operation to main tain control of the motorcycle e The passenger should always hold onto the operator the seat strap or grab bar if equipped with both hands and keep both feet on the passenger footrests Never carry a passenger unless he or she can firmly place both feet on the passenger footrests Never ride under the influence of alcohol or other drugs A SAFETY INFORMATION This motorcycle is designed for on road use only It is not suitable for off road use Protective apparel The majority of fatalities from motor cycle accidents are the result of head injuries The use of a safety helmet is the single most critical factor in the pre vention or reduction of head injuries Always wear an approved helmet e Wear a face shield or goggles Wind in your unprotected eyes could contribute to an impairment of vision that could delay seeing a hazard The use of a jacket heavy boots trousers gloves etc is effective in preventing or reducing abrasions or lacerations e Never wear loose fitting clothes otherwise they could catch on

10. adjusting the spring rate ECA10091 NOTICE To avoid damaging the front fork oil seals do not exceed the maximum air pressure Adjust the spring rate as follows 1 Place the vehicle on the sidestand When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the vehicle 2 Remove the air valve cap from each fork leg 4 17 1 Front fork air valve cap 3 Check the air pressure in each fork leg using a low pressure air gauge A low pressure air gauge is available at a Yamaha dealer 4 To increase the spring rate and thereby harden the suspension in crease the air pressure with an air pump To decrease the spring rate and thereby soften the suspen sion decrease the air pressure by pushing each valve stem down INSTRUMENT AND CONTROL FUNCTIONS Spring rate Minimum soft Air pressure 0 kPa 0 kgf cm2 0 psi Standard Air pressure 0 kPa 0 kgf cm2 0 psi Maximum hard Air pressure 50 kPa 0 5 kgf cm2 7 1 psi 4 5 Securely install the air valve caps EAU14801 Adjusting the shock absorber assembly This shock absorber assembly is equipped with an air valve for adjusting the spring rate ECA10101 NOTICE To avoid damaging the mechanism do not attempt to turn beyond the maximum or minimum settings Adjust the spring rate as follows 1 Place the vehicle on the sidestand When checking and adjusting the air pressure there should be no weight on the vehicle
11. and operate spark plug gaps or replace the spark plugs the electric starter Remove the spark plugs j 7 and check the electrodes g The engine does not start gt Dry Have a Yamaha dealer check the vehicle Check the battery 4 Battery ml The engine turns over The battery is good quickly The engine does not start Operate the electric starter gt Have a Yamaha dealer The engine turns over Check the battery lead connections check the vehicle slowly and charge the battery if necessary 7 37 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT Engine overheating EWAT1040 e Do not remove the radiator cap when the engine and radiator are hot Scalding hot fluid and steam may be blown out under pressure which could cause serious injury Be sure to wait until the engine has cooled Place a thick rag like a towel over the radiator cap and then slowly rotate the cap counterclockwise to the de tent to allow any residual pressure to escape When the hissing sound has stopped press down on the cap while turning it counterclockwise and then remove the cap Wait until the Check the coolant level in the engine has cooled reservoir and radiator TIP a The coolant level is low Check the cooling system for leakage There is Have a Yamaha dealer check leakage and repair the cooling system There is a A

14. ignition circuit cut off system e If system is not working correctly have Yamaha dealer check vehicle 5 3 EAU15951 Read the Owner s Manual carefully to become familiar with all controls If there is a control or function you do not understand ask your Yamaha dealer EWA10271 A WARNING Failure to familiarize yourself with the controls can lead to loss of con trol which could cause an accident or injury OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS EAU38002 Starting and warming up a cold engine In order for the ignition circuit cut off system to enable starting one of the following conditions must be met e The transmission is in the neutral position e The transmission is in gear with the clutch lever pulled and the sid estand up See page 4 19 for more informa tion Turn the fuel cock lever to ON Turn the key to ON and make sure that the engine stop switch is set to O 3 Shift the transmission into the neu tral position See page 6 3 The neutral indicator light should come on If not ask a Yamaha dealer to check the electrical circuit 4 Turn the starter choke on and completely close the throttle See page 4 12 5 Start the engine by pushing the start switch N 6 1 If the engine fails to start release the start switch wait a few sec onds and then try again Each starting attempt should be as short as possible to preserve the bat tery Do no

83. sufficient brake or clutch fluid may al low air to enter the brake or clutch sys tems possibly causing them to become ineffective Before riding check that the brake and clutch fluids are above the minimum level marks and replenish if necessary A low brake or clutch fluid level may in dicate brake or clutch system leakage and or worn brake pads If the brake or clutch levels are low be sure to check the brake or clutch systems for leakage and the brake pads for wear Observe these precautions When checking the brake and clutch fluid levels make sure that the top of each reservoir is level PERIODIC MAINTENANCE AND ADJUSTMENT Use only the recommended quality brake fluid otherwise the rubber seals may deteriorate causing leakage and poor braking or clutch performance Recommended brake and clutch flu DOT 4 brake fluid e Refill with the same type of brake fluid Mixing fluids may result in a harmful chemical reaction and lead to poor braking or clutch per formance Be careful that water does not en ter the brake or clutch fluid reser voir when refilling Water will significantly lower the boiling point of the fluid and may result in vapor lock Brake fluid may deteriorate paint ed surfaces or plastic parts Al ways clean up spilled fluid immediately e As the brake pads wear it is nor mal for the brake fluid level to grad ually go down However if the 7 26 brake fluid level goes down
