3. 1 Shift pedal N Neutral position EAU00423 Shifting Shifting gears lets you control the amount of engine power available for starting off accelerating climbing hills etc The gear positions are shown in the illustration NOTE To shift the transmission into the neu tral position press the shift pedal down repeatedly until it reaches the end of its travel and then slightly raise it 5 3 1 Shift pedal N Neutral position EC000048 CAUTION Even with the transmission in the neutral position do not coast for long periods of time with the engine off and do not tow the motorcycle for long dis tances The transmission is properly lubricated only when the engine is running Inade quate lubrication may damage the transmission Always use the clutch while changing gears to avoid dam aging the engine transmission and drive train which are not designed to withstand the shock of forced shifting OPERATION AND IMPORTANT RIDING POINTS EAU02988 To start out and accelerate 1 2 Pull the clutch lever to disengage the clutch Shift the transmission into first gear The neutral indicator light should go out Open the throttle gradually and at the same time release the clutch lever slowly At the recom

18. i i To install the panel Removing and installing the ere re Place the panel in the original position Jo remove the panel panel o remove the pane and then install the bolt Remove the bolt and then pull the pan The panel shown above needs to be el off as shown removed to perform some of the main tenance jobs described in this chapter Refer to this section each time the pan el needs to be removed and installed 6 7 1 Cylinder head cover EAU01673 Checking the spark plugs The spark plugs are important engine components which are easy to check Since heat and deposits will cause any spark plug to slowly erode the spark plugs should be removed and checked in accordance with the periodic mainte nance and lubrication chart In addition the condition of the spark plugs can re veal the condition of the engine 1 Spark plug wrench To remove a spark plug 1 Remove the appropriate spark plug cover rear right or front left by pulling it off as shown 2 Remove the spark plug cap 3 Remove the spark plug as shown with the spark plug wrench includ ed in the owner s tool kit To check the spark plugs 1 Check that the porcelain insulator around the center electrode on each spark plug is a medium to light tan the ideal color when the motorcycle
