The FAB 1100 assembly provides a forced air circulation feature for your appliance This kit mounts directly into the lower intake chamber with an electrical connection made at the recep tacle provided The appliance must have an independent 120Vac power line incorporated at the time of installation Refer to Step 6 of the installation instructions supplied with the forced air kit Figures 20 and 21 NOTE DIAGRAMS amp ILLUSTRATION NOT TO SCALE Figure 20 Blower Motor Grounded to Appliance Motor Plug Appliance Junction Box Figure 21 Remote Control Kit The Model RCK adds the convenience of re mote control for your appliance The kit in cludes a wireless hand held transmitter and a receiver that replaces the wall switch This special receiver permits either manual or re mote control modes Both receiver and trans mitter operate on standard 9 volt batteries not included Referto the RCK installation instruc tion for specific details Wall Switch Kit An optional wall switch kit can be installed along with all vent free appliances The kit consists of a standard UL wall switch with cover plate This kit provides for remote wall operation of the appliance Replace the wall switch and cover plate of this kit with the components of the RCK and you can have true remote control of your vent free appliance turning it on and off from your favorite easy chair The wall switch kit should be installed
5. around the bottom of the firebox Brass Square Surround Kit A decorative brass square surround kit is avail able for use with these appliances The BSK 6 is designed to attach directly to the front face of the appliance at its extreme edges The BSK 6 provides a picture frame finish for the appliance 2 wide The brass square surround kit can be retrofitted onto previously installed appliances Screen Panel Kit An optional screen panel can be installed on the VFST door This screen panel is easy to install using the provided hardware The screen panel can be installed with both ceramic and tempered glass in the door This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed VFST appliances The screen panel kit can not be used in conjunction with either of the decorative arch kits Decorative Arch Kits Two arch kits are available for the VFST Series A one piece complete door arch kit and a four piece arch frame kit Both kits are easy to install and do not require hardware to attach them to the standard door frame The four piece arch frame kit can be installed without the bottom or bottom and side pieces to customize the look of your appliance These kits can be retrofitted to previously installed VFST Series appliances The decorative arch kits can not be used in conjunction with the screen panel kit Glass Door Kit The VF6BDK Glass Door can be installed in pairs on the appliance in place of the standard screen panels The gla

9. along with the appliance Refer to Figure 13 and Step 6 for detailed installation instructions 11 Solid Brass Hood Kit An attractive solid brass hood kit is available for use with these VF appliances The brass hood kit is designed to be fitted to your appli ance above the door In addition to providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance to your appliance installation the hood reduces heat effects to decorative mantles and finish mate rials located directly above the fireplace open ing The hood kit includes the necessary attaching hardware This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed appliances Solid Brass Louver Kit Solid brass louvers are available for use with these appliances These louvers are designed to replace the standard black louvers that are provided with the appliance The brass louver kit includes three 3 louvers that simply snap into place They provide a touch of elegance to the VF appliance This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed appliances Optional on Unit Rocker Switch An optional rocker switch kit can be installed directly on all VFST series appliances to provide for On and Off operation in lieu of a wall switch This kitis designed to install inthe lower control compartment out of view and is perfect for use in high volume areas such as lobbies and model homes where limited access to the appliance On Off switch is desirable This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed
10. appliances and may be temporarily installed in place of other switch circuitry Wall Thermostat Kit A wall thermostat kit is available for use with these appliances The wall thermostat is de signed to be wired directly to the appliance millivolt gas control circuit and provide auto matic On Off control of the appliance to main tain a desired temperature within the room Solid Brass Hood Kit An attractive solid brass hood kit is available for use with these VF appliances The brass hood kit is designed to be fitted to your appli ance above the door In addition to providing an aesthetically pleasing appearance to your appliance installation the hood reduces heat effects to decorative mantles and finish mate rials located directly above the fireplace open ing The hood kit includes the necessary attaching hardware This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed appliances Square Trim Kit A square trim kit is available for the VFST Series This kit is easy to install and does not require hardware to attach it as designed di rectly to the standard door frame The four piece square trim kit can be installed without the bottom or bottom and side pieces to cus tomize the look of our appliance This kit can be retrofitted to previously installed appliances Decorative Volcanic Stone The decorative volcanic stone Model DVS can be used to enhance the look of your appliance Spread the decorative volcanic stone evenly
11. shipped with all gas controls and components installed and pre wired Re move the shipping carton exposing the screen panel assemblies or optional if installed glass doors Remove wood slats and remove and discard the wood slat mounting brackets Loosen and remove the three 3 12 20 x 1 Phillips pan head screws at the three 3 tabs located along the top ofthe screen or glass door frame top edge Tilt the frame outward and disengage the three 3 tabs along the bottom from the three 3 brackets at the bottom of the firebox opening Remove the door and set the panel aside protecting it from inadvertent dam age Retain the three 3 screws for use on reassembly Repeat the procedure if required to gain access to the other side of the appliance Remove the logs packaged inside the firebox and also set aside Check Gas Type This appliance can only be connectedto the gas type specified on the appliance data plate This appliance can not be modified in the field for a different gas type If the gas type to be used is not the one specified contact the dealer to obtain the correct gas appliance Note Illustrations shown in this manual reflect typical installations with nominal dimensions and are for design and framing reference only Actual installations may vary due to individual design preferences However always maintain minimum clearances to combustible materials and do not violate any specific installation requirements N
12. the PILOT position Figure 20 Press the control knob all the way in for 5 seconds Note you are running the heater for the first time it will be necessary to press the control knob all the way in for 30 seconds to allow air to bleed out of the gas piping 8 With the control knob pressed in push in and release the piezo igniter button to light the pilot Hold the control knob in for a further 10 seconds to prevent the flame failure detector from shutting off the gas while the probe is warming up Release the control knob while turning counterclockwise to the ON Position Figure 27 Then adjust HI LO knob to prefered setting e fthe knob does not pop out when released stop and immediately call your service technician or gas supplier If the pilot will not stay lit after several tries depress and turn the gas control knob clockwise to OFF and wait 30 seconds Depress and turn knob counter clockwise to ON and press igniter button again If your pilot does not relight depress and turn control knob clockwise to OFF and call your service technician or gas supplier Wait 30 seconds before readjusting the heater when the control knob has been turned down to a lower setting TO TURN OFF GAS TO HEATER Depress and turn control knob clockwise TN to the OFF position Figure 18 MANUAL MATCH LIGHTING PROCEDURE EMERGENCY ONLY If the pilot cannot be lit with the piezo igniter th
13. the flu with headaches dizziness and or nausea If you have these signs obtain fresh air im mediately Turn off the gas supply to the heater and have the Unvented Gas Heater serviced as it may not be operating correctly e Dueto high temperatures the heater should be located out oftraffic and away from furniture and draperies e Children and adults should be alerted to the hazard of high surfacetemperatures and should stay away to avoid burns or clothing ignition e Young children should be carefully supervised when they are in the same room with the heater e Do not place clothing or other flammable material on or near the heater for the purpose of drying e Installation and repair should be done by a qualified service person The heater should be inspected before use and at least annually by a professional service person Morefrequentclean ing may be required due to excessive lint from carpeting bedding material etc It is important that control compartments burners and circulat ing air passageways of the heater be kept clean Allow the heater to cool before servicing Always shut off any electricity or gas to the heater while performing service work e Do not install the VFST and VFPF series heaters in a bedroom or bathroom e The installation must conform with local codes or in the absence of local codes with the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 The heater and its individual shut off valve must be disc
14. to the floor because some gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS e Do not try to light any appliance e Do not touch any electric switch do not use any phone in your building e Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor s phone Follow the gas supplier s instructions e f you cannot reach your gas supplier call the fire department C Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control knob Never use tools If the knob will not push in or turn by hand do not try to repair it call a qualified service technician Forced or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion Do not use this heater if any part has been under water Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been under water LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS Stop Read the safety information above Make sure manual shut off valve is fully open Locate gas control knob and piezo Depress control knob in and turn clockwise 77 to the OFF position Figure 18 Wait 5 minutes to clear out any gas Then smell for gas including near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety information above If you do not smell gas go to the next step The pilot is located on the right side in front of the burner Figure 19 Depress control knob in and turn counterclockwise A gt to

E THE APPLIANCE IS HOT Step 9 Checking the System With gas line installed run initial system checkout before closing up the front of the unit Follow the pilot lighting instructions on page 15 Note Instructions are also found on the pull out panel located on the bottom surface of the appliance When first lighting the appliance it will take a few minutes for the line to purge itself of air Once purging is complete the pilot and burner will lightand operate as indicated inthe instruc tion manual Subsequent lightings of the appli ance will not require such purging Inspect the pilot flame remove logs if necessary handling carefully The pilot flame should be steady not lifting or floating Flame should be blue in color with traces of orange at the outer edge The top 38 10 mm at the pilot generator thermocouple should be engulfed in the pilot flame NG only Replace logs if removed for pilot inspection To light the burner turn ON the optional remote wall switch if installed and rotate the gas valve control knob counterclockwise to the ON position Step 10 Installing the Screen Panel Assem bly Retrieve the screen door frame Position the door frame in front of the firebox opening in the brackets at the base of the fireplace front opening Lean the door frame back towards the fireplace ensuring that the frame seats evenly as it draws shut Install the three 3 12 20 x 1 Phillip

42. s pan head screws removed previously and tighten to secure Installing the Optional Glass Door Position the door frame in front of the firebox opening with the joint in the gasket down Locate the three 3 tabs at the bottom edge of the door frame into the three 3 brackets at the base of the fireplace front opening Lean the door frame back towards the fireplace ensuring that the frame seats evenly as it draws shut Figure 19 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT An incomparable package of options are avail able for use with these appliances These op tions can both customize the operation of these unique appliances and enhance their beauty and charming appeal All options are available in kit form are easy to install and are packaged complete with all required parts and instruc tions Some of the option kits need to be fitted prior to completing the installation of the appli ance The following paragraphs detail the kit options available for use with the appliances covered in this manual These outstanding optional items can be added individually or in sets of two or more to cus tomize your vent free appliance to fit your homes unique needs The appliances covered in this manual are heater rated and produce a great deal of heat Decorative brass trim pieces and hoods may tarnish because of their proximity to the heater Opening and front face Tarnishing of these pieces is normal unavoidable and should be expected Forced Air Kit
43. ss doors add beauty and protection for your appliance Glass doors prevent cross drafts that may cause unwanted flame impingement on the logs Gas Flex Line with Valve A gas flex line kit is available to aid in attaching the appliance to the gas supply This kit can only be used where local codes permit The kit includes 1 2 NPT to 3 flare in line shut off valve a 12 flex line 9e female flare through and a flare to 26 NPT fitting The components of this kit are rated for both natural and propane gas This kit is designed to be used as an aid in installing the appliance WARNING CHILDREN AND ADULTS SHOULD BE ALERTED TO THE HAZARDS OF HIGH SURFACETEMPERATURES USE CAUTION AROUND THE APPLIANCE TO AVOID BURNS OR CLOTHING IGNITION YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE SUPER VISED WHEN THEY ARE IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE APPLIANCE OPERATION AND CARE OF YOUR APPLIANCE 1 Appliance operation may be controlled through the optional ON OFF unit rocker switch located in the lower control compartment or through a remotely located optional wall switch or wall thermostat Separate switches may provide independent control for the forced air blower and remote fireplace operation op tional equipment 2 These heater rated units are equipped with a two stage HI LOW gas control valve To cycle the burner between the HI and LOW settings rotate the control knob located in the center of the valve front face clockwise and countercloc

45. used in propane appli cations Turn on gas supply and test for gas leaks using a soapy water solution Never use an open flame to check for leaks NOTE DIAGRAMS amp ILLUSTRATION NOT TO SCALE Mix a 50 dish soap 50 water solution B Light the appliance refer to safety and lighting instructions on page 15 See Note C Brush all joints and connections with the soapy water solution to check for leaks If bubbles are formed or gas odor is detected turnthe gas control knob to the OFF position Either tighten or refasten the leaking connec tion and retest as described above D When the gas lines are tested and leak free observe the individual tongues of flame on the burner Make sure all ports are open and pro ducing flame evenly across the burner If any ports are blocked or partially blocked clean out the ports An external regulator must be used on all propane L P G heaters in addition to the regulator fitted to the heater to reduce the supply tank pressure to 13 w c maximum WARNING CONNECTING DIRECTLY TO AN UNREGULATED PROPANE TANK CAN CAUSE AN EXPLOSION Step 6 Installing the Optional Remote Wall Switch The standard millivolt system comes from the factory wired as shown in Figure 12 Selecta convenient location forthe remote wall switch and connect the wiring to the appliance Figure 13 CAUTION DO NOT CONNECT THE OP TIONAL REMOTE SWITCH TO A 120V POWER SUPPLY Note The
