2. authorized service dealer or call 1 800 554 6723 BLADE ADJUSTMENT The clearance between the cutting blades must be adjusted periodically to maintain opti mal performance and sharp cutting _ AINA S S P2222222 27727277 1 Using a wrench loosen each nut on the top side of the blade guide 2 Tighten each bolt from underside of blade with a wrench UNDERSIDE OF BLADE NRA AA n 1 OO Bolt t 3 Loosen each bolt 1 2 turn 4 2 turn UNDERSIDE OF BLADE 4 While holding each bolt in place with a wrench retighten the nuts 7 TOP SIDE J OF BLADE NOTE After adjustment the washers be tween the bolt head and the blade should be able to be turned by hand but not loose enough to move when the unit is tilted from side to side CAUTION If the clearance between the cutting blades is set too wide the blades will not cut correctly Ifthe blades are adjusted too tight overheating may occur REPLACE SPARK PLUG Replace spark plug each year to ensure the engine starts easier and runs better Set spark plug gap at 0 025 inch 0 6 mm Igni tion timing is fixed nonadjustable 1 Twist then pull off spark plug boot 2 Remove spark plug from cylinder and dis card 3 Replace with Champion RCJ 6Y spark plug and tighten securely with a 3 4 inch 19 mm socket wrench 4 Reinstall the spark plug boot STORAGE WARNING Perform the following steps after each use Allow engine to

4. cool and secure the unit before storing or transporting Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or open flames from water heaters electric motors or switches furnaces etc Store unit with the blade cover installed Position unit so that any sharp object can not accidentally cause injury Store unit and fuel well out of the reach of children SEASONAL STORAGE Prepare unit for storage at end of season or if it will not be used for 30 days or more If your unit is to be stored for a period of time e Clean the entire unit e Store in a clean dry area e Clean all parts and check for damage Have damaged parts repaired or replaced by an authorized service dealer e Keep all nuts bolts and screws tight e Lightly oil external metal surfaces includ ing the blade e Install the blade cover To oil the blade do the following e Stop the engine and allow blade to come to a complete oP e Ensure ON OFF switch is in the OFF posi tion e Disconnect the spark plug wire e Apply a light machine oil along the edge of the top strap as shown REPLACE FUEL FILTER To replace fuel filter drain unit by running it dry of fuel then remove fuel cap retainer assem bly from tank Pull filter from tank and remove it from the fuel line Install new fuel filter on fuel line reinstall parts OIL Top Strap 7 V O P FUEL SYSTEM Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA TION
5. lock NOTE If engine dies with the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the rope until the engine runs but no more than 6 pulls EE STARTING A WARM ENGINE Move the ON OFF switch to the ON posi tion 2 Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times 3 Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position 4 Engage the throttle lock as directed in STARTING A COLD ENGINE NOTE Keep the throttle lock engaged until the engine starts 5 Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs but no more than 5 pulls 6 Allow the engine to run 10 seconds then move the choke lever to the OFF CHOKE position 7 Release the throttle lock by squeezing and releasing the trigger NOTE If engine has not started pull starter rope 5 more pulls If engine still does not run it is probably flooded Proceed to STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE Flooded engines can be started by placing the ON OFF switch in the ON position and the choke lever in the OFF CHOKE position and engaging the throttle lock as directed in the STARTING A COLD ENGINE section then pull the rope to clear the engine of excess fuel Starting could require pulling the starter rope many times depending on how badly the unit is flooded If the unit still doesn t start refer to the TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call 1 800 554 6723 SERVICE WARNING Ensure ON OFF switch is in the OFF position and disconn
6. y Throttle Trigger 1 Move the ON OFF switch to the ON posi tion 2 Engage the throttle lock as follows e press the throttle lock out e squeeze and hold throttle trigger e press and hold throttle lock then e release the throttle trigger NOTE Keep the throttle lock engaged until the engine starts 3 Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times 4 Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position Primer Bulb Choke Lever 5 Pull starter rope handle sharply until en gine sounds as if it is trying to run but do not pull rope more than 6 times 6 Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position 7 Pull starter rope sharply until the engine runs but no more than 6 pulls NOTE ff the engine doesn t start after 6 pulls at the HALF CHOKE position check to make sure the ON OFF switch is in the ON position Move the choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position and press the primer bulb 6 times pull the starter rope 2 more times Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKE position and pull the starter rope until the en gine runs but no more than 6 more pulls If the engine still doesn t start it is probably flooded Proceed to STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE 8 Once the engine starts allow the engine to run 10 seconds then move the choke lever to the OFF CHOKE position Allow the unit to run for 30 more seconds at the OFF CHOKE position before squeezing and releasing the throttle trigger to release the throttle

ATING INSTRUCTIONS It is recommended that the engine not be operated for longer than 30 secondsat full throttle Releasing the trigger and allowing the engine to briefly return to idle speed 5 10 seconds will be sufficient Ae IMPORTANT POINTS e Use the minimum throttle speed necessary to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge trimmer performance e Never attempt to use this hedge trimmer to cut hedges that have any branches with a diameter larger than 5 8 1 5 cm OPERATING POSITION Hearing _ Protection STOPPING YOUR ENGINE e To stop the engine move the ON OFF switch to the OFF position e If engine does not stop move choke lever to the FULL CHOKE position STARTING YOUR ENGINE e Fuel engine Move at least 10 feet 3 me ters away from the fueling site e Remove the blade cover from the blade before starting the unit e Hold the unit on the ground in the starting position as shown Support unit so the lade is off of the ground and away from trees bushes onlookers etc HELPFUL TIP If your engine still does not Start after following these instructions please call 1 800 554 6723 STARTING A COLD ENGINE ora ri engine after running out of ue A WARNING The cutting blade will be moving once the throttle lock has been set and the engine is started Wear your protec tive equipment and observe all safety instruc tions ON OFF Switch Throttle Lock s Throttle Lock out

Compare the illustrations with your unit to familiarize yourself with the location of the vari ous controls and adjustments Save this manual for future reference Throttle Throttle Lock Lock out TP Muffler Blade ON OFF SWITCH The ON OFF SWITCH is used to stop the en gine To stop the engine move the switch to the OFF position CHOKE The CHOKE helps to supply fuel to the engine to aid in cold starting Activate the choke by moving choke lever to the desired position See STARTING YOUR ENGINE for complete start ing information Spark Plug Choke Lever Primer Bulb ON OFF Switch Fuel Mix Fill Cap PRIMER BULB The PRIMER BULBremoves air from the car buretor and fuel lines and fills them with fuel This allows you to start the engine with fewer pulls on the starter rope Activate the primer bulb by pressing it and allowing it to return to its original position THROTTLE TRIGGER The THROTTLE TRIGGER controls engine speed Squeeze the trigger for full speed opera tion release it for idle speed A WARNING Muffler is very hot during and after use Do not touch the muffler or al low combustible material such as dry grass or fuel to do so BEFORE STARTING ENGINE WARNING Be sure to read the fuel information in the safety rules before you be gin If you do not understand the safety rules do not attempt to fuel your unit Call 1 800 554 6723 FUELING ENGINE A WAR

NING Remove fuel cap slowly when refueling HELPFUL TIP To obtain the correct oil mix ratio pour 3 2 ounces of 2 cycle synthetic oil into one gallon of fresh gas This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline Before operation gasoline must be mixed with a good quality synthetic 2 cycle air cooled engine oil designed to be mixed at a ratio of 40 1 Poulan Weed Eater brand synthetic oil is recommended A 40 1 ratio is obtained by mixing 3 2 ounces 95 ml of oil with 1 gallon 4 liters of unleaded gasoline DO NOT USE au tomotive oil or boat oil These oils will cause en gine damage When mixing fuel follow instruc tions printed on oil container Once oil is added to gasoline shake container momentarily to as sure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed Always read and follow the safety rules listed under HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION IMPORTANT Experience indicates that alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems empty the fuel system before storage for 30 days or longer Drain the gas tank start the en gine and let it run until the fuel lines and carbure tor are empty Use fresh fuel next season Never use engine or carburetor cleaner prod ucts in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur OPER

NOW YOUR UNIT e Read your instruction manual carefully until you completely understand and can follow all warnings and safety rules before operat ing the unit e Restrict unit to users who understand and will follow all warnings and safety rules in this manual and on the unit PLAN AHEAD A WARNING Inspect area before start ing unit Remove all debris and hard objects such as rocks glass wire etc that can rico chet be thrown or otherwise cause injury or damage during operation e Always wear eye protection when operating servicing or performing maintenance on unit Wearing eye protection will help to prevent brush or debris from being thrown or ricochet ing into eyes and face which can result in blindness and or serious injury Eye protec tion should be marked 287 Wear hearing protection when using this unit Secure hair above shoulder length Secure or remove jewelry loose clothing or clothing with loosely hanging straps ties tassels etc They can be caught in moving parts Stay alert Do not operate unit when you are tired ill te or if you are under the influence of alcohol drugs or medication Keep children bystanders and animals away from work area a minimum of 30 feet 10 meters when starting or operating unit HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION e Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in cluding smoking open flames or work that can cause sparks in the areas where fuelis mixed poured or stored Mi

12. after each use inspect com plete unit for loose or damaged parts After each use clean the unit and labels using a damp cloth with a mild detergent e Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth CLEAN AIR FILTER Air Filter C Air Filter Screw Cleaning the air filter A dirty air filter decreases engine perform ance and increases fuel consumption and harmful emissions Always clean after every 5 hours of operation 1 Clean the cover and the area around it to keep debris from falling into the carburetor chamber when the cover is removed 2 Remove parts as illustrated NOTE Donotclean filter in gasoline or other flammable solvent Doing so can create a fire hazard or produce harmful evaporative emis sions 3 Wash the filter in soap and water 4 Allow filter to dry 5 Add a few drops of oil to the filter squeeze filter to distribute oil 6 Replace parts INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK ARRESTING SCREEN A WARNING The muffler on this prod uct contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer TES As your unit is used carbon deposits build up on the muffler and spark arresting screen For normal homeowner use however the muffler and spark arresting screen will not re quire any service After 50 hours of use we recommend that your muffler be serviced or replaced by your authorized service dealer CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT A WARNING Keep others away when making idle speed adjustme

15. nts The blade will be moving during most of this procedure Wear your protective equipment and observe all safety precautions en making adjust ments use a screwdriver short enough to keep your hands behind the handguard and away from the blade After making adjust ments the blade must not move at idle speed The carburetor has been carefully set at the factory Adjustments may be necessary if you notice any of the following conditions e Engine will not idle when the throttle is re leased e The blade moves at idle Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments Make adjustments with the unit resting on a level surface free of debris that can be caught in the hedge trimmer blade Serious injury to the operator and others can occur if the carburetor is not properly adjusted Keep all parts of your body away from the blade and muffler Idle Speed Adjustment Allow engine to idle Adjust speed until engine runs without blade moving idle too fast or en gine stalling idle speed too slow e Turn idle speed screw clockwise to in crease engine speedif engine stalls ordies e Turn idle speed screw counterclockwise to decrease engine speed if the blade moves at idle WARNING Recheck the idle speed after each adjustment The blade must not move at idle speed to avoid serious injury to the operator or others _ Idle Speed Screw If you require further assistance or are unsure about performing this procedure contact an

18. section of this manual see message la beled IMPORTANT regarding the use of ga sohol in your engine Fuel stabilizer is an ac ceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabi lizer to gasoline in fuel tank or fuel storage con tainer Follow the mix instructions found on sta bilizer container Run engine at least 5 minutes after adding stabilizer HELPFUL TIP During storage of your gas oil mixture the oil will sepa rate from the gas We recommend that you shake the gas can weekly to insure proper blending of the gas and oil ENGINE Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon of 40 1 2 cycle engine oil air cooled through the spark plug opening Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to 10 times to distribute oil Replace spark plug with new one of recom mended type and heat range see RE PLACE SPARK PLUG section Clean air filter Check entire unit for loose screws nuts and bolts Replace any damaged broken or worn parts At the beginning of the next season use tes fresh fuel having the proper gasoline to oil ratio TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE OTHER e Do not store gasoline from one season to another e Replace your gasoline can if it starts to rust NEED ASSISTANCE NEED ASSISTANCE Call 1 800 554 6723 for assistance NEED SERVICE PARTS Contact your dealer A WARNING Always stop unit and disconnect spark plug before performing all ofthe recommended remedies
