Installation Items Needed Before installing heater make sure you have the items listed below e piping check local codes e sealant resistant to propane LP gas e equipment shutoff valve e test gauge connection e sediment trap e tee joint e pipe wrench ACSA design certified equipment shutoff valve with 1 8 NPT tap is an acceptable alternative to test gauge connection Pur chase the optional CSA design certified equipment shutoff valve from your dealer See Accessories page 21 A WARNING Never connect heater to private non utility gas wells This gas is commonly known as wellhead gas A CAUTION Use only new black iron or steel pipe Inter nally tinned copper tubing may be used in certain areas Check your local codes Use pipe of 1 2 diameter or greater to allow proper gas volume to heater If pipe is too small undue loss of volume will occur Installation must include an equipment shutoff valve union and plugged 1 8 NPT tap Locate NPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up NPT tap must be upstream from heater see Figure 13 IMPORTANT Install equipment shutoff valve in an accessible location The equip ment shutoff valve is for turning on or shutting off the gas to the appliance Check your building codes for any special requirements for locating equipment shutoff valve to fireplaces Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NPT threads This will prevent exces

13. a qualified service technician or gas supplier Force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion D Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been un der water OWNER S MANUAL LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS Ad WARNING e If fireplace has glass doors never operate this heater with glass doors closed If you oper ate heater with doors closed heat buildup inside fireplace will cause glass to burst Also if fireplace opening has vents at the bottom you must open the vents before operating heater You must operate this heater with afireplace screenin place Make sure fireplace screen is closed before running heater NOTICE During initial operation of new heater burning logs will give off a paper burning smell Open damper or window to vent smell This willonly lastafew hours Note Home owners generally prefer to operate their heater with the chimney damper closed This will put all the heat into the room However there may be times you will desire the full flames of the HI heat setting but will find the heat output excessive You can open the chim ney damper if you have one fully or partially to release some of the heat AX WARNING Damper handle will be hot if heater has been running 1 2 STOP Re
14. ad the safety information column 1 Make sure equipment shutoff valve is fully open Press in and turn control knob clock wise Z N to the OFF position Control Knob Ignitor Button aa Figure 18 Control Knob and Ignitor Button Location 105191 7 Thermocouple Wait five 5 minutes to clear out any gas Then smell for gas including near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety in formation in column 1 If you don t smell gas go to the next step Slightly depress and turn control knob counterclockwise y N to the PILOT position Keep control knob pressed in for five 5 seconds see Figure 18 Note You may be running this heater for the first time after hook ing up to gas supply If so the con trol knob may need to be pressed in for 30 seconds or more This will al low air to bleed from the gas system With control knob pressed in press and release ignitor button This will light pilot The pilot is attached to the burner If needed keep pressing ig nitor button until pilot lights Note If pilot does not light contact a qualified service person or gas sup plier for repairs Until repairs are made light pilot with match To light pilot with match see Manual Light ing Procedure on page 16 Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds after lighting pilot After 30 seconds release control knob Note If pilot goes out repeat steps 3 through 7 If co
15. al fresh air ventilation A WARNING If the area in which the heater may be operated is smaller than that defined as an unconfined space or if the building is of unusually tight construction provide adequate combustion and ventilation air by one of the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 NFPA 54 Section 5 3 or applicable local codes Continued 105191 5 fig UNVENTED NATURAL GAS LOG HEATER AIR FOR COMBUSTION AND VENTILATION Continued VENTILATION AIR Ventilation Air From Inside Building This fresh air would come from an adjoining unconfined space When ventilating to an adjoining unconfined space you must pro vide two permanent openings one within 12 of the ceiling and one within 12 of the floor on the wall connecting the two spaces see options 1 and 2 Figure 2 You can also remove door into adjoining room see op tion 3 Figure 2 Follow the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 NFPA 54 Section 5 3 Air for Combustion and Ventilation for required size of ventilation grills or ducts Ventilation Air From Outdoors Provide extra fresh air by using ventilation grills or ducts You must provide two per manent openings one within 12 of the ceiling and one within 12 of the floor Connect these items directly to the outdoors or spaces open to the outdoors These spaces include attics and crawl spaces Follow the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 NFPA 54 Section 5 3 Air for

43. tilation Unusually Tight Construction The air that leaks around doors and win dows may provide enough fresh air for combustion and ventilation However in buildings of unusually tight construction you must provide additional fresh air Unusually tight construction is de fined as construction where a walls and ceilings exposed to the outside atmosphere have a con tinuous water vapor retarder with a rating of one perm 6 x 10 kg per pa sec m or less with open ings gasketed or sealed and b weather stripping has been added on openable windows and doors and c caulking or sealants are applied to areas such as joints around window and door frames be tween sole plates and floors be tween wall ceiling joints be tween wall panels at penetra tions for plumbing electrical and gas lines and at other openings If your home meets all of the three criteria above you must provide ad ditional fresh air See Ventilation Air From Outdoors page 6 If your home does not meet all of the three criteria above proceed to De termining Fresh Air Flow For Heater Location page 5 Confined and Unconfined Space The National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 NFPA 54 defines a confined space as a space whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per 1 000 Btu per hour 4 8 m per kw of the aggregate input rating of all appli ances installed in that space and an uncon fined space as a space whose volume is not less than 50 cubi
