1. Remove the module cover 1 2 M2 5 x 5 mm screw captive screws E module cover T NOTI CE To prevent damage to the memory module connector do not use tools to spread the memory module securing clips 3 Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up 4 Remove the module from the connector upper memory module connector securing clips 2 cle tt Replacing the DIMM 1 Memory Module NOTICE To avoid electrostatic discharge ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface such as a connector on the back of the computer 1 Align the notch in the module edge connector with the tab in the connector slot 2 Slide the module firmly into the slot at a 45 degree angle and rotate the module down until it clicks into place If you do not feel the click remove the module and reinstall it K NOTE If the memory module is not installed properly the computer may not boot No error message indicates this failure 1 tab 2 notch 3 Replace the module cover 4 Insert the battery into the battery bay or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet 5 Turn on the computer As the computer boots it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information To confirm the amount of memory installed in the compute

Removing the Palm Rest A CAUTION Before you begin any of the procedures in this section follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide NOTICE To avoid electrostatic discharge ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface such as the back panel on the computer 1 Follow the instructions in Before You Begin 2 Remove any installed ExpressCards from the ExpressCard slot 3 Remove any installed memory modules or Mini Cards see Memory and Communication Cards 4 Remove the hard drive see Hard Drive 5 Remove the display assembly see Display Assembly 6 Turn the computer upside down and remove the six M2 5 x 5 mm screws from the computer base EN 5 rJ A e 7 Turn the computer top side up and remove the seven screws from the top of the palm rest NOTI CE Pull on the plastic tab on top of the connectors to avoid damaging the connectors 8 Disconnect the touch pad cable from the system board touch pad connector NOTICE Carefully separate the palm rest from the computer base to avoid damage to the palm rest 9 Starting at the back center of the palm rest use your fingers to separate the palm rest from the computer base by lifting the inside of the palm rest while pushing in on the outside Replacing the Palm Rest 1 Align the palm rest with the computer base and gently snap it into place 2 Connect the touch pad c
5. amp The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process is complete Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system press and hold the power button until they turn off Before Working Inside Your Computer Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your own personal safety o 0 OP CAUTI ON Before you begin any of the procedures in this section follow the safety instructions in the Product I nformation Guide NOTI CE Handle components and cards with care Do not touch the components or contacts on a card Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket Hold a component such as a processor by its edges not by its pins NOTI CE Only a certified service technician should perform repairs on your computer Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell is not covered by your warranty NOTI CE When you disconnect a cable pull on its connector or on its pull tab not on the cable itself Some cables have connectors with locking tabs if you are disconnecting this type of cable press in on the locking tabs before you disconnect the cable As you pull connectors apart keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins Also before you connect a cable ensure that both connectors are correctly orien
6. antenna cables to the WLAN card you are installing If the WLAN card has two triangles on the label white and black connect the white antenna cable to the connector labeled main white triangle and connect the black antenna cable to the connector labeled aux black triangle If the WLAN card has three triangles on the label white black and gray connect the white antenna cable to the white triangle connect the black antenna cable to the black triangle and connect the gray antenna cable to the gray triangle 5 Secure unused antenna cables in the protective mylar sleeve 6 Replace the cover and tighten the captive screws Removing a Mobile Broadband or WWAN Card K NOTE WWAN is also available on an ExpressCard see Using ExpressCards in your Owner s Manual 1 Follow the procedures in Before You Begin 2 Turn the computer over 3 Loosen the captive screw on the Mini Card module cover and remove the cover 4 Disconnect the two antenna cables from the WWAN card 1 WWAN 2 M2 x 3 mm securing 3 antenna cable connectors card screw 2 5 Release the WWAN card by removing the securing screw 6 Lift the WWAN card out of its system board connector Replacing a WWAN Card NOTICE The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion If you feel resistance check the connectors on the card and on the system board and realign the card NOTICE To avoid damage to the WWAN card never place cables under
7. program CD flash the BIOS from the hard drive Flashing the BIOS From a CD 1 Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly K NOTE If you use a BIOS update program CD to flash the BIOS set up the computer to boot from a CD before inserting the CD 2 Insert the BIOS update program CD and restart the computer Follow the instructions that appear on the screen The computer continues to boot and updates the new BIOS When the flash update is complete the computer will automatically reboot 3 Press lt F2 gt during POST to enter the system setup program 4 Press lt Alt gt and lt F gt to reset the computer defaults 5 Press lt Esc gt select Save changes and reboot and press lt Enter gt to save configuration changes 6 Remove the flash BIOS update program CD from the drive and restart the computer Flashing the BIOS From the Hard Drive 1 Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in the main battery is properly installed and a network cable is attached 2 Turn on the computer 3 Locate the latest BIOS update file for your computer at support dell com 4 Click Download Now to download the file 5 If the Export Compliance Disclaimer window appears click Yes Accept this Agreement The File Download window appears 6 Click Save this program to disk and then click OK The Save In window appears 7 Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu select Desktop an
