LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON Setting Up the LaCie Box User Manual page 12 2 3 Disconnecting Your Hard Drive External USB devices feature plug amp play connectivity which means that your drive can be connected and disconnected while the computer is running To prevent failures however it is im ia 16 PM portant to follow these steps when disconnecting your hard drive ora 2 3 1 Windows Users From the System Tray located in the lower right hand side of your screen click the Eject icon a small green arrow over a hardware image Fig 09 Windows Users A message will appear listing the devices the Eject icon controls it should say Safely remove Click on the drive you wish to disconnect This message will appear Safe to Remove Hardware or simi lar It is now safe to disconnect the device 2 3 2 Mac Users Fig 10 Mac Users Drag the hard drive icon to the trash Fig 10 Mac Users The icon pictured below is a generic USB device icon Your drive may be represented by an icon that looks like the drive itself When the icon disappears from the desktop the drive can be disconnected LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON User Manual Formatting page 13 3 Optional Formatting amp Partitioning If your needs change when using the LaCie Box you can reformat your SATA 3 5 hard drive to optimize it for use with Windows or Mac or for cross platform use For exampl

File System Formats There are three different file system format categories NTFS FAT 32 MS DOS and Mac OS Extended HFS See the table be low for more information Use NTES if you will be using the drive only with Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows Vista or Windows 7 pertor mance will generally be greater when compared to FAT 32 This tile system is compatible in read only mode with Mac OS 10 3 and higher Use HFS if you will be using the drive on Macs only performance will generally be greater when compared to FAT 32 This file system is NOT compatible with Windows OS Use FAT 32 MS DOS if you will be using your drive with both Windows and Mac 10 3 or sharing the drive between Windows 2000 and Windows XP Windows Vista or Windows 7 Maxi mum single file size is 4GB LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON User Manual 3 1 Windows Users The process of formatting a drive on a computer running Win dows 2000 Windows XP or Windows Vista consists of two steps 1 installing a signature on the drive and 2 formatting the drive These steps will erase anything that is on the disk CAUTION Following these steps will erase everything from the LaCie Box lt is very important to back up all information that you want to protect or continue to use before performing these steps 1 Connect the drive to the computer via the interface port 2 Right click My Computer and select Manage 3

Use only the power supply shipped with the device Do not place objects on top of the LaCie Box or use excessive force on it Never use excessive force on your LaCie Box If you detect a problem see the Troubleshooting section in this manual CAUTION A shielded type power cord is required in order to meet FCC emission limits and also to prevent interference to the nearby radio and television reception It is essential that only the supplied power cord be used LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON User Manual Operating Environment Temperatures Do not expose the LaCie Box to temperatures outside the range of 5 C to 30 C 41 F to 86 F The LaCie Box has been designed to dissipate heat effectively lt is nonetheless important to allow 5 cm of clearance for airflow on all sides of the enclosure to prevent overheating See Fig 01 IMPORTANT INFO Any loss corruption or destruction of data while using a SATA 3 5 hard drive housed within the LaCie Box is the sole responsibility of the user and under no circumstances will LaCie be held liable for the recovery or restoration of this data To help prevent the loss of your stored files LaCie highly recom mends that you keep TWO copies of your data one copy on your external hard disk for instance and a second copy either on your internal hard disk another external hard disk or some other form of removable storage media LaCie offers a complete line of CD and DVD driv
5. the drivers and re install them Also make sure that you are connect ed directly to a Hi Speed USB 2 0 port on your computer See sections 1 1 Minimum System Requirements and 4 1 Optimizing Data Transfers for more information LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON User Manual Troubleshooting page 20 5 2 Troubleshooting Windows Users Problem The drive is not recognized by the computer Question Has the drive been formatted Does your computer s operating system support the file system Is there an icon for the drive in My Computer Does your computer s configura tion meet the minimum system re quirements for use with this drive Is the drive s power supply con nected Did you follow the correct installa tion steps for the specific interface and operating system Are both ends of the USB cables firmly attached Is there a conflict with other device drivers or extensions Did you correctly install the 3 5 SATA disk Answer Make sure that the drive has been formatted properly Please see sec tion 3 Optional Formatting amp Partitioning Check your computer s documentation and see section 3 Optional Formatting amp Partitioning the LaCie Box Go into My Computer and look for an icon and drive letter as signed to the drive If the drive does not appear follow the rest of the Troubleshooting tips to isolate the problem Go into My Computer and look for an icon and drive letter as

11. when the alert message appears to con tinue 9 Mac Disk Utility will format and partition the disk according to your settings Upon completion of the format process your drive will appear on your desktop ready for use LaCie Box DESIGN BY NEIL POULTON User Manual Interface and Data Transfer Information page 17 4 Interface and Data Transfer Information 4 1 Optimizing Data Transfers Data transfers are the flow of data that accomplishes a task usu ally related to moving data from storage to computer RAM or be tween storage devices With external drives such as the SATA disk installed in the LaCie Box the data is transferred trom the drive to the computer via the USB intertace The data is fed trom the drive through the USB port on the drive and passes to the computer through the USB host bus adapter intertace USB To utilize the enhanced Hi Speed USB 2 0 pertormance your computer must be equipped with a Hi Speed USB 2 0 host bus adapter card either sold separately or integrated by your com puter s manufacturer and the appropriate drivers These host bus adapter cards which include one or more USB ports are shipped with special Hi Speed USB 2 0 drivers that enable the computer to control the card These drivers must be installed in order tor USB 2 0 devices connected to the port to work at their correct speeds Computers running Windows XP Windows Vista and Windows 7 automatically manage Hi Speed USB 2 0 dev

18. e if you previously formatted your drive to work with a Mac using HFS but now you want to share your hard disk with Windows users you can reformat it to FAT 32 MS DOS To reformat your drive follow the instructions in this section IMPORTANT INFO Please copy all critical or important data trom the LaCie Box to your computer s internal hard drive or an external hard drive before reformatting Reformatting will erase everything trom the SATA disk within the LaCie Box If you have data that you want to protect or continue to use copy this intor mation before retormatting What is Formatting When a disk is formatted the following things occur the operat ing system erases all of the bookkeeping information on the disk tests the disk to make sure that all of the sectors are reliable marks bad sectors i e those that are scratched and creates internal address tables that it later uses to locate intormation What is Partitioning You can also divide the hard disk into sections called partitions A partition is a section of the hard disk s storage capacity that is created to contain files and data For instance you could create three partitions on your drive one partition for your office docu ments one as a backup and one tor your multimedia tiles Or it you will be sharing the drive with another person in your house hold or office you can create a partition for each person who uses the drive Partitioning is optional
19. ecting them If the drive is still not recognized restart your computer and try again Contact LaCie Technical Support for help Check your computer s documentation and see section 3 Optional Formatting amp Partitioning tor more intormation If you installed a 3 5 SATA hard disk make sure that its SATA con nector is firmly attached to the port inside the LaCie Box Also check the procedure in section 2 1 Step 1 Installing a Hard Drive When copying files or folders from Mac OS 10 x to a FAT 32 volume file names with certain characters cannot be copied These characters include but are not limited to Coe a Check your files and folders to ensure that these types of characters are not being used Apple does not support the Hi Speed USB 2 0 standard under Mac OS 9 x You will be limited to the slower transfer rates of the original USB standard For more information please see section 4 1 Optimiz ing Data Transfers If your drive is connected to a standard USB port this is normal A Hi Speed USB 2 0 device can only operate at Hi Speed USB 2 0 performance levels when it is connected directly to a Hi Speed USB 2 0 port Otherwise the Hi Speed USB 2 0 device will operate at the slower USB transfer rates For more information please see sections 4 1 Optimizing Data Transfers Check to see that the Hi Speed USB 2 0 drivers for both your host bus adapter and device have been installed correctly If in doubt un install
