11. The DVMS 400 uses Wavelet video compression to reduce the size of recorded video files This advanced method of compression was chosen because it maintains a high image quality level while achieving very high compression ratios Wavelet compression also eliminates the block artifacts seen in Discrete Cosine Transform DCT compression schemes such as JPEG and MPEG compression At very high compression ratios images compressed with Wavelet compression become softer with less detail saturation and contrast rather than an image with obvious digital artifacts Another advantage of wavelet compression is that it permits a simple motion detection algorithm to be used which makes it ideal for CCTV applications To specify how much compression is being used by your system you can change the Compression settings in the Setup program See Time Lapse Recording page 42 Event Recording General Setup page 44 and Pre Event Recording page 53 Audio Compression CD quality stereo sound uses an audio sampling rate of 44100 samples per second This requires a data transfer rate of 172 kB s For time lapse audio recording the DVMS 400 uses True Speech compression a speech compression mode that uses only 1 04 kB s The audio data can be played back in sync with the video image data If you do not need sound recorded with your video you may choose not to record from the audio input 99 1843 0400 5830065NC Gyyr DVMS 400 User s Guide 100

14. be suitable for image compression Compression algorithms can be divided into reversible and non reversible algorithms When data is compressed and then de compressed using a reversible algorithm the result is exactly the same as the original data This type of compression is effective for data with a lot of redundancy such as text but it provides very little reduction in data size for non redundant data such as digital video data To reduce the data size of video images non reversible compression algorithms have been developed which provide higher compression ratios 97 1843 0400 5830065NC 98 Gyyr DVMS 400 User s Guide than reversible algorithms Non reversible algorithms don t give you back exactly the same data when they are de compressed Obviously this is not suitable for some types of data such as numerical data or text but non reversible compression algorithms that have been especially designed for video images create very small changes in the image that do not significantly alter the overall look of the picture These small changes are called digital artifacts How noticeable digital artifacts are depends on the amount and type of compression By carefully tailoring compression the digital artifacts can be reduced to a virtually unnoticeable level The DVMS 400 uses Wavelet compression which produces images that do not show any obvious digital artifacts Other compression schemes for example JPEG compression will

23. on your Video Monitor window Video Monitoring Controls Ouality vs Speed This slider controls the amount of compression that is applied to the video image files before they leave the DVMS 400 unit to be transmitted to the computer At the highest guality setting the video images will be less compressed so they will be bigger files that will take longer to transmit and that will lower the speed at which the video image can be refreshed At the highest speed settings the video will be more compressed so some details may be blurred but the refresh speed will be higher This slider only applies to live video monitoring not video clip playback When you are playing back video clip files they will be be sent using the compression that was set when they were originally recorded Color vs Mono A color video image file is twice the size of a mono black and white video image If you switch to a mono image the refresh speed will be higher Frame vs Field A full video image is called a frame where each frame is made up of two fields One field consists of all the odd horizontal lines and the other field consists of all the even horizontal lines Thus a frame of video data is twice the size of a field of video data When you display the video in field mode the odd field is displayed for both the odd and the even lines This reduces the vertical resolution but the refresh speed will be higher Audio On You may monitor live audio when your Vid
24. outer edge of the disk while typical hard drive speeds vary from 3 to 7 MB s The throughput is higher at the outer edge of the disk because the speed of a point on an outer track is faster than the speed of a point on an inner track for a disk with a fixed rotation rate Is this fast enough for NTSC or PAL standard quality video For digital video using the world standard CCIR 601 sampling rate every frame of video is sampled at a resolution of 720 horizontal by 480 vertical pixels Each pixel requires two bytes of data one for the luminance and one for the chrominance There are 29 97 frames per second A little arithmetic gives a total data rate of approximately 20 MB s To achieve this speed you d need several disks ganged together along with an array of hardware and software to manage them The cost of this kind of multi disk arrangement would be too expensive for most applications A far more practical solution is to compress the data so that it can be sent at the disk throughput rates of available hard drives Compression Compression is a mathematical process which reduces the amount of data in a given file There are many different types of compression processes or algorithms tailored for the type of data they are designed to compress Compression schemes that are optimized for a specific type of data usually will not work as well for other data types For example compression schemes that are suited for text files may not
