Step back from the mower to fully extend your arms b Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing c Pull the mower back slowly no more than half way toward you d Repeat these steps as needed Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs Do not engage the self propelled mechanism on units so equipped while starting engine The blade control handle is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operation Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released Never operate the mower in wet grass Always be sure of your footing A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury If you feel you are losing your footing release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds Mow in daylight or good artificial light walk not run 10 Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives walkways or roads 11 If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally stop the engine and check immediately for the cause Vibration is generally a warning of trouble 12 Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to acomplete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off Ne

7. to the mower e Insert frame into grass bag with the black plastic side on the bottom of bag See Figure 8 e Slip the openings in the side of the plastic channel on bag over the hooks on the grass catcher frame Secure bag to the frame by working the six plastic channels on bag over frame All of the plastic chan nels except the center top of the bag attach from the outside of bag The center top of the bag attaches from inside the bag See Figure 8 Grass Catcher Insert frame Frame into bag A Grass Bag Grass Catcher Plastic Assembly Channel Figure 8 Attaching Hard Top Cover If Equipped e Slide the hardtop cover under the grass catcher handle positioning it so the handle rests snugly into the notch in the cover and press the frame into the tabs at the back of the cover See Figure 9 Mounting Bracket Figure 9 e Position the mounting bracket facing down between the front of the handle and the front of the hardtop cover so that the holes in the cover line up with the holes in the bracket Insert the self tapping screws down through the hardtop cover and mounting bracket Attaching Grass Catcher amp Chute WARNING Never operate the mower unless the hooks on the grass catcher are firmly seated on the chute pivot rod and the rear discharge door rests firmly against the top of the grass catcher IMPORTANT Make sure cable is routed to the outside of the handle so that i

18. erside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent any build up of grass clippings leaves dirt or other debris NOTE We do not recommend the use of pressure washers or garden hose to clean your unit These may cause damage to bearings or the engine The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability e Disconnect spark plug wire Drain the gasoline from the lawn mower or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap Tip the mower so that it rests on the housing Keep the side with the air cleaner facing up Hold the mower firmly WARNING Never tip the mower more than A 90 degrees in any directions and do not leave the mower tipped for any length of time Oil can drain into the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem e Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool Do not spray with water SECTION 8 SERVICING THE MOWER Blade Care A Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a foreign object Replace when necessary Removing the Blade e Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are up e Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft See Figure 14 WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or u
19. ischarge chute from the mower and operate with the mulching plug only for this purpose SECTION 5 OPERATING YOUR LAWN arlene instructions and warnings on the machine and in this manual before operating T WARNING Read understand and follow all NOTE You must service the engine with oil and gasoline before starting the mower for the first time Check oil and gasoline levels and fill up as necessary for subsequent starts sas amp Oil Fill Up Check oil level and add oil if necessary Follow relevant instructions in the engine manual for this e Service the engine with gasoline as instructed in the engine manual WARNING Use extreme care when handling gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive Never fuel the machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running Extinguish cigarettes cigars pipes and other sources of ignition Before Starting Mower e Attach spark plug wire to spark plug Make certain the metal cap on the end of the spark plug wire inside the rubber boot is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug starting Engine Push primer three times Wait about two seconds between each push In cold weather around 55 F or below prime five times Do not prime to restart a warm engine after a short shutdown e Standing behind the mower depress the blade control handle and hold it against the upper handle Grasp starter handle and pull rope out slowly until engi

21. n the upper hole on the handle mounting bracket and secure with plastic wing nut from the hardware pack See Figure 4 Repeat on the other side e Fasten the cable to the lower handle with the two cable ties found on the lower handle Pull the cable ties tight and trim off the excess See Figure 5 Figure 5 NOTE Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher position If you wish to lower the height of the handle refer to the Adjustment Section at this time Attaching Rear Wheels Remove the hex flanged nut on the rear axle from each side leave the spring washer in place and place the rear wheel on the axle See Figure 6 Reinsert the flanged nut into the axle as shown and tighten securely Repeat on other side meet Rear Axle Figure 6 Attaching Starter Rope The rope guide is already attached to the right side of the upper handle of your mower See Figure 7 Starter aed Rope Guide Wing Nut B upper Handle Lower Handle Figure 7 e With the spark plug wire disconnected and grounded hold the blade control handle against the upper handle and pull the rope out of the engine e Slip the rope through the rope guide as shown below Tighten the wing nut holding the rope guide to the upper handle Assembling Grass Catcher NOTE f the grass catcher came pre assembled proceed to the next section If it came unassembled follow the steps below to assemble it first before attaching
22. nced blade WARNING An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds It may cause damage to the mower and could break causing personal injury Balancing the Blade The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly It is recommended that the blade always be removed from the adapter when testing for balance Installing the Blade e Before reinstalling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil e Be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked Bottom or with part number facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft Place the blade on the adapter Be certain the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges SECTION 9 TROUBLESHOOTING e Place blade bell support on blade Make sure the notches on the blade bell support are aligned with small holes in the blade e Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque 450 in lbs min 600 in lbs max NOTE To ensure safe operation of your mower periodically check the blade bolt for correct torque Replacing Rear Flap Toremove rear flap cut off the flat end of the wire rod which secures it to the deck e Attach the new flap and new rod to deck bending the ends of

24. se a heavy rag to hold the blade e Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground If you had put plastic under the gas cap make sure to remove it now Lubrication Blade Control Handle e Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle at least once a season with light oil The blade control must operate freely in both directions Wheels e Lubricate the wheels and bearings if so equipped at least once a season with light oil or engine oil Also if the wheels are removed for any reason lubricate the surface of the pivot arm axle and the inner surface of the wheel with light oil Rear Discharge Door e Lubricate the torsion spring and the pivot point on each end of the rear discharge door using a light oil This will prevent rusting of the discharge door Engine Care Follow the accompanying engine manual for detailed list and instructions WARNING Make sure to avoid muffler and surrounding areas while the mower engine is hot because temperature of these areas of the engine may exceed 150 F Remove the blade and the adapter from the crankshaft Blade Adapter Blade Bell Support Hex Bolt Figure 14 Sharpening the Blade The blade can be sharpened with a file or ona grinding wheel Do not attempt to sharpen the blade while it is still on the mower e Follow the original angle of grind as a guide Make sure that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbala

28. the other side Bagging Grass Clippings You can use the grass catcher bag to collect clippings while you are operating the mower e Attach grass catcher following instructions on page 9 of this manual Grass clippings will automatically collect in the bag as you run the mower Operate the mower till the grass bag is full e Stop engine completely by releasing the blade control handle Make sure that the unit has come to a complete stop e Lift discharge door and pull grass bag up and away from the mower to dispose of the grass clippings Height Lower Handle e Reassemble the upper handle to the lower handle Attach the starter rope as instructed in the Assembly Section Cutting Height Adjustment For rough or uneven lawns move the height adjustment lever to a higher position This will help stop scalping of the grass An adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position provides cutting height adjustment Each adjusting plate has nine height positions Height of cut will change when you move the thumb lever from one position to another Simply depress the lever towards the wheel and move the lever assembly to desired position See Figure 13B All wheels must be placed in the same relative position SECTION 7 MAINTAINING YOUR LAWN MOWER WARNING Always stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance work or adjustments on your lawn mower Cleaning Mower The und

30. xtreme care in handling gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive Serious personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on yourself or your clothes which can ignite Wash your skin and change clothes immediately Use only an approved gasoline container Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling 5 If possible remove gas powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground If this is not possible then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container rather than froma gasoline dispenser nozzle 6 Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete Do not use a nozzle lock open device 7 Extinguish all cigarettes cigars pipes and other sources of ignition 8 Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area 9 Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or running Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling AN 10 15 Never over fill fuel tank Fill tank to no more than 1 2 inch below bottom of filler neck to provide space for fuel expansion Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely If gasoline is spilled wipe it off the engine and equipment Move unit to another area Wait 5 minutes before
