Figure 5 SECTION 5 KNOW YOUR LAWN MOWER WARNING Be familiar with all controls and their proper operation Know how to stop the machine and disengage them quickly Blade Control Handle Starter Figure 6 Blade Control Handle WARNING The blade control handle is a A safety device Never attempt to bypass its operations Doing so may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade The blade rotates whenever the engine is running and when the self starter is de energized The blade control handle is located on the upper handle of the mower See Figure 6 The blade control handle and starter control button must be depressed in order to operate the unit Release the blade control handle to stop the engine and blade and to energize the self starter Recoil Starter The recoil starter handle is attached to the upper handle See Figure 6 The recoil starter is used to start the engine when the self starter is in the de energized mode Safety Key The safety key is located on the engine See Figure 6 The safety key is a safety device used to activate and deactivate the self starter system The self starter system will not work without the key in it s proper position See engine manual for further information pertaining to the safety key NOTE The safety key must be in the run position to start the mower for both systems either the self starter or recoil starter Start Control Button The

Adjustment Section on page11 Remove the hairpin clips from the outer holes in the weld pins on the handle mounting brackets Using a pair of pliers squeeze one leg of the lower handle against the handle mounting bracket Insert the hairpin clip into the inner hole on the weld pin See Figure 2 Repeat on other side Hairpin Clip in Inner Hole Lower Handle N gt Handle Mounting Bracket Figure 2 Insert post on cable ties into holes provided on the lower handle Pull the cable tie tight and trim the excess See Figure 3 Cable Tie Hole on Lower Handle Figure 3 e The rope guide is attached to the right side of the upper handle Loosen the wing nut which secures the rope guide For location of the wing nut see Figure 4 Slip rope into rope iu Wing Nut R pe Guide Figure 4 With the spark plug wire disconnected and grounded and with the safety key in the locked position pull the starter rope out of the engine Slip the starter rope into the rope guide Tighten the wing nut See Figure 4 Make certain all nuts and bolts are tightened securely Your mower has been shipped as a mulcher To convert it to a side discharge mower lift the mulching plug Slide the two hooks on the side discharge deflector under the hinge pin on the mulching plug assembly Lower the mulching plug See Figure 5 Mulching Plug Hinge Pin I guum ua Ji P Lal 2 y

If you strike a foreign object stop the engine Remove wire from spark plug and de energize thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage and repair the damage before restarting and operating the mower Excessive vibration of the mower during operation is an indication of damage The unit should be promptly inspected and repaired SECTION 7 MAKING AD USTMENTS WARNING Be sure to disconnect the spark plug wire and DE ENERGIZE starter before performing any adjustments or repairs DO NOT attempt any maintenance or service to the engine and or mower equipped with the safety key in the unlocked and or energized mode WARNING NEVER assume starter is de energized even if the key is in the locked position and or removed from the engine ALWAYS de energize self starter prior to performing any maintenance or service to the engine and or mower Follow instructions on the engine and or machine to de energize starter A A Cutting Height Adjustment There is an adjusting plate and thumb lever at each wheel position to adjust the cutting height Each adjusting plate has nine height positions Height of cut will change if you move the thumb lever from one hole to another Simply depress the lever towards wheel and move the wheel and lever assembly to the desired position All wheels must be placed in the same relative position for uniform cutting height See Figure 8 Adjustment Lever Figure 8 For rough or uneven law

7. objects which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of material toward roads sidewalks bystanders and the like Also avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction which may cause discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury stay in the operator zone behind the handles and keep children bystanders helpers and pets at least 75 feet from the mower while it is in operation Stop machine if anyone enters the area Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to protect your eyes Thrown objects which ricochet can cause serious injury to the eyes Wear sturdy rough soled work shoes and close fitting slacks and shirts Shirts and pants that cover the arms and legs and steel toed shoes are recommended Never operate this machine in bare feet sandals slippery or light weight e g canvas shoes Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the cutting deck Contact with the blade can amputate hands and feet 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 WARNING This symbol points out important safety instructions which if not followed could endanger the personal safety and or property of yourself and others Read and follow all instructions in this manual bef
8. on units so equipped while starting engine The blade control handle is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operation Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released Never operate the mower in wet grass Always be sure of your footing A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury If you feel you are losing your footing release the blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop rotating within three seconds Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light Walk never run Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives walks or roads If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally stop the engine and check immediately for the cause Vibration is generally a warning of trouble Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a complete stop before removing the grass catcher or unclogging the chute The cutting blade continues to rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off Never place any part of the body in the blade area until you are sure the blade has stopped rotating 20 Never operate mower without proper trail shield discharge cover grass catcher blade control handle or other safety protective devices in place and working Never operate mower with damaged safety devices Failure to do so
9. start control button is located on the upper left side of the handle See Figure 6 The start control button must be depressed fully while pulling the blade control handle toward upper handle for the engine to start The starter control button will automatically return to the off up position once the blade control handle is released NOTE The starter button must be depressed to start the engine with either the self starter or recoil starting system SECTION 6 OPERATING YOUR LAWN MOWER WARNING Read understand and follow all instructions and warnings on the machine and in this manual before operating Keep hands and feet away from the discharge area on and from under the cutting deck See safety labels on page 5 The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes which can result in severe eye damage Always wear safety glasses or eye shields NOTE For best results raise the cutting position until it is determined which height is best for your lawn See Cutting Height Adjustment section Gas And Oil Fill Up Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual Read instructions carefully WARNING Use extreme care when handling A gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive Never fuel machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running Extinguish cigarettes cigars pipes and other sources of ignition Before Starti

11. the nuts is also recommended To Reinstall Blade Be sure to install the blade with the side of the blade marked Bottom or with part number facing the ground when the mower is in the operating position Be certain the blade is aligned with and seated onto the blade adapter flanges Place blade bell support on blade Make sure the notches on the blade bell support are aligned with the small hole in the blade Replace hex bolt Tighten to torque 450 in lbs min 600 in lbs max To ensure safe operation of mower check all nuts and bolts periodically for correct torque Deck Maintenance The underside of the mower deck should be cleaned after each use to prevent a buildup of grass clippings leaves dirt or other matter If this debris is allowed to accumulate it will invite rust and corrosion and may prevent proper mulching The deck may be cleaned by tilting the mower and scraping clean with a suitable tool make certain the spark plug wire is disconnected Do not use high pressure cleaners or water We do not recommend the use of pressure washers or garden hose to clean your unit They may cause damage to electric components spindles pulleys bearings or the engine The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability Engine Maintenance Refer to the separate engine manual for all engine maintenance instructions Maintain ENGINE OIL as instructed in the engine manual Service AIR CLEANER

17. cing BEFORE performing any other service to engine or mower BEFORE transporting mower ALWAYS DE ENERGIZE SELF STARTER e ALWAYS lock and remove safety key and store in a safe place until next use The safety key is designed and intended to be removed from engine when not in use Removing key will prevent unsupervised or unexpected starting of mower by children or unsuspecting adults The safety key must be in the locked position before it can be removed Using Your Rotary Mower Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to be used Remove all stones sticks wire bones toys and other foreign objects which could be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the blade Thrown objects can cause serious personal injury e For best results do not cut wet grass because it tends to stick to the underside of the mower preventing proper discharge of grass clippings and could cause you to slip and fall New grass thick grass or wet grass may require a narrower cut When using side discharge mower the best mowing pattern is one that allows the clippings to discharge towards the uncut part of the lawn This permits recutting of the clippings to further pulverize them When cutting high weeds discharge towards cut portion then recut at right angles to first direction Fora healthier lawn always cut off one third or less of the total length of the grass Lawn should be cut in the fall as long as there is growth A WARNING

19. every 25 hours under normal conditions Clean every few hours under extremely dusty conditions Poor engine performance and flooding usually indicates that the air cleaner should be serviced To service the air cleaner refer to the engine manual The SPARK PLUG should be cleaned and the gap reset once a season Spark plug replacement is recommended at the start of each mowing season check engine manual for correct plug type and gap specifications CLEAN the engine regularly with a cloth or brush Keep the cooling system blower housing area cleaned to permit proper air circulation which is essential to engine performance and life Be certain to remove all grass dirt and combustible debris from muffler area SECTION 10 OFF SEASON STORAGE The following steps should be taken to prepare lawn mower for storage T WARNING Be sure to disconnect the spark plug wire and DE ENERGIZE starter before performing any repairs or maintenance DO NOT attempt any maintenance or service to the engine and or mower equipped with the safety key in the unlocked and or energized mode WARNING NEVER assume starter is de energized even if the key is in the locked position and or removed from the engine ALWAYS de energize self starter prior to performing any maintenance or service to the engine and or mower Follow instructions on the engine and or machine to de energize starter A WARNING Never store the machine or fuel container indoors w

22. hine to de energize starter A A NOTE When tipping the unit empty the fuel tank and keep engine spark plug side up Cutting Blade WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement protect hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to grasp the cutting blade To remove blade Remove the bolt and blade bell support which hold the blade and adapter to the engine crankshaft See Figure 11 Remove the blade and the adapter from the crankshaft A Blade H lt Hex Bolt Figure 11 WARNING Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a foreign object Replace when necessary When sharpening the blade follow the original angle of grind as a guide It is extremely important that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of grinding to prevent an unbalanced blade An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds may cause damage to the mower and could break causing personal injury The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round shaft screwdriver Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly It is recommended that the blade always be removed from the adapter for the best test of balance Before reinstalling the blade and the blade adapter to the unit lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil or engine oil Lubricating the bolt holes bolts and inner surface of
23. iner Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or trailer bed with a plastic liner Always place containers on the ground away from your vehicle before filling 5 When practical remove gas powered equipment from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground If this is not possible then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a portable container rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle 6 Keepthe nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete Do not use a nozzle lock open device 7 Extinguish all cigarettes cigars pipes and other sources of ignition 8 Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors will accumulate in the area 9 Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot or running Allow engine to cool at least two minutes before refueling 10 Never over fill fuel tank Fill tank to no more than Y inch below bottom of filler neck to provide space for fuel expansion 11 Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely 12 If gasoline is spilled wipe it off the engine and equipment Move unit to another area Wait 5 minutes before starting the engine 13 Never store the machine or fuel container inside where there is an open flame spark or pilot light as on a water heater space heater furnace clothes dryer or other gas appliances 14 To reduce fire hazard keep mower free of grass leaves or other debris build up Clean u
24. n a safe place WARNING The blade will continue to rotate A for three seconds after the blade control lever is released To De Energize Self Starter Remove spark plug wire from spark plug e Turn safety key to RUN position 1 4 turn clockwise e While standing in the operating position depress the starter control button fully with the thumb of your right hand e Using your left hand pull the control handle all the way toward the upper handle Release button and wait until engine and starter stop rotating Release safety blade control handle the start control button will automatically return to the off up position e Remove safety key NOTE Engine will crank over upon actuating equipment starting controls but will not spark if spark plug wire was removed from spark plug as described above Once engine has stopped cranking self starter is de energized T WARNING Self Starting System If these instructions are not followed amputation or severe laceration can result e ALWAYS disconnect spark plug de energize starter lock and remove safety key BEFORE performing ANY service to the engine or mower DONOT attempt any maintenance or repairs to the self starter e NEVER assume starter is de energize even if key is in LOCK AND REMOVE position and or removed from engine e BEFORE removing grass or other debris from under mower deck BEFORE changing oil air filter or spark plug BEFORE removing blade for servi
25. ng Attach spark plug wire to spark plug If equipped with a rubber boot make certain the metal loop on the end of the spark plug wire inside the rubber boot is fastened securely over the metal tip on the spark plug First Time Starting Engine NOTE Use recoil starter rope to start engine for the very first time The mower is shipped with the safety key in the locked position and the self starter in the de energized mode follow instructions as follows 1 Place lawn mower on a level surface outdoors 2 Remove clear plastic packaging under fuel cap 3 Check oil level 4 Add fuel 5 Open shut off valve if equipped 1 4 turn 6 Push spark plug wire firmly on spark plug 7 Turn safety key 1 4 turn clockwise to RUN position 8 Firmly push primer bulb 3 times 9 While standing in the operating position depress the starter control button fully with the thumb of your right hand 10 Using your left hand pull the control handle all the way toward the upper handle See Figure 7 11 Release the button 12 Grasp the recoil rope starter handle with your right hand and slowly pull towards you until you feel a slight resistance then pull firmly until your arm is fully extended 13 If engine does not start by the second pull repeat steps 8 9 10 11 and 12 Second Time Starting Engine NOTE Follow these instructions if the self starter is already in the energized mode WARNING NEVER assume starter is in the A d
26. ns move the height adjustment handles to positions which will give a higher cutting height Both front and rear handles must be placed in the same relative position Handle Height Adjustment Lower Handle Figure 9 Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher height position To lower the handle height proceed as follows e Remove the starter rope from the rope guide Remove the upper handle by removing the hand knobs and carriage bolts Lay the upper handle out of the way being careful not to bend or kink the cable Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on the handle brackets Press inward on the legs of the lower handle Remove lower handle from the mower Turn the lower handle around so the notch on the bottom of the lower handle is facing forward as shown in Figure 9 Reassemble placing the bottom holes in the handle over the weld pins in the handle mounting bracket Reassemble the upper handle e Place the hairpin clips in the inner holes in the weld pins and attach the starter rope as instructed in the Set Up Instructions SECTION 8 SERVICE A WARNING Be sure to disconnect the spark plug wire and DE ENERGIZE starter before lubricating repairing or servicing DO NOT attempt any maintenance or service to the engine and or mower equipped with the safety key in the unlocked and or energized mode WARNING NEVER assume starter is de energized even if the key is in the locked positi

29. ove loose parts if included with unit i e operators manual bottle of oil etc Cut corners and lay carton down flat Remove packing material Roll unit out of carton Check carton thoroughly for loose parts SECTION 4 ASSEMBLING YOUR LAWN MOWER NOTE Your mower is shipped with the handle in the IMPORTANT This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil Be certain to service engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual before operating your mower NOTE Heference to right or left hand side of the mower is observed from the operating position Tools Required Pair of pliers not necessary but helpful A WARNING Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against the engine to prevent unintended starting Leave safety key in locked position Assembling Mower Remove any packing material which may be between the upper and lower handles for shipping purposes Disconnect spark plug wire from the spark plug and ground it against the engine Pull up and back on the upper handle to raise the handle into the operating position Make certain the lower handle is seated securely into the handle mounting brackets Tighten the hand knobs on each side of the handle carriage bolts must be seated properly on the handle See Figure 1 Carriage Bolt CA A Carriage Bolt Hand Knob Figure 1 higher height position If you wish to lower the height of the handle refer to the Handle Height
