3. alignment of moving parts binding of moving parts breakage of parts mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation A guard or other part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service dealer Following this rule will reduce the risk of shock fire or serious injury SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES E Kickback is a dangerous reaction that can lead to serious injury Kickback may occur when the moving chain con tacts an object at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar or when the wood closes in and pinches the chain in the cut Contact at the upper portion of the tip of the guide bar can cause the chain to dig into the object and stop the chain for an instant The result is a lightning fast reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator If the chain is pinched along the top of the guide bar the guide bar can be driven rapidly back toward the operator which can cause loss of control and may result in serious injury Do not rely exclusively upon the safety devices built into the product With a basic understanding of kickback you can reduce or eliminate the element of surprise Sudden surprise contributes to accidents Make sure that the area in which you are cutting is free from obstructions Do not let the nose of the guide bar contact a log branch fence or any other obstruction while you are operating the unit Cut only when visibility and light ar
4. by the shoulder strap SECOND CUT Sa li 4 I g PREPARATION FOR CUTTING See Figures 5 8 E Wear non slip gloves for maximum grip and protection E Maintain a proper grip on the unit whenever the engine is running Use your right hand to firmly grip the rear handle while your left hand has a firm grip on the front handle E Hold unit firmly with both hands Always keep your left hand on the front handle and your right hand on the rear handle so your body is to the left of the chain line Never use a left handed cross handed grip or any stance that places your body or arm across the chain line l i I FIRST CUT 1 4 DIAMETER FINAL a 10 OPERATION E Release the trigger as soon as the cut is completed allow ing the engine to idle If you run the pruner at full throttle without a cutting load unnecessary wear or damage can occur to the chain bar and engine CUTTING GUIDE Failure to follow proper cutting procedures will result in the bar and chain binding and becoming pinched or trapped in the limb If this should happen E Stop the engine E Loosen the knob on the coupler E Depress the button on the shaft twist and pull the shafts to separate the pruner from the power head E If the limb can be reached from the ground lift the limb while holding the attachment This should release the pinch and free the pruner E f the pruner is still trapped call a professional for as
5. 1 MONTH OR LONGER See Figure 30 FUEL CAP A WARNING A leaking fuel cap is a fire hazard and must be replaced immediately The fuel cap contains a non serviceable filter and a check valve A clogged fuel filter will cause poor engine perfor mance If performance improves when the fuel cap is loos ened check valve may be faulty or filter clogged Replace fuel cap if required SPARK PLUG This engine uses a Champion RCJ 6Y with 025 in electrode gap Use an exact replacement and replace annually 18 Drain all fuel from tank into a container approved for gasoline Run engine until it stops Clean all foreign material from the trimmer Store it in a well ventilated place that is inaccessible to children Keep away from corrosive agents such as garden chemicals and de icing salts Abide by all ISO and local regulations for the safe storage and handling of gasoline Excess fuel should be used up in other 2 cycle engine powered equipment Always place the sheath on the saw bar when transporting or storing the pruner The sheath is a snug fit and must be attached very carefully due to the sharp teeth on the saw chain This is best done by grasping the sheath at one end in the center portion of the sheath and carefully sliding it over the chain as shown below Use caution to avoid the sharp teeth of the chain TROUBLESHOOTING PROBLEM CAUSE REMEDY Engine will not start Engine starts but will not accelerate

10. ampness diet smoking and work practices are all thought to contribute to the development of these symptoms It is presently unknown what if any vibrations or extent of exposure may contribute to the condition There are measures that can be taken by the operator to possibly reduce the effects of vibration a Keep your body warm in cold weather When operat ing the unit wear gloves to keep the hands and wrists warm It is reported that cold weather is a major factor contributing to Raynaud s Syndrome b After each period of operation exercise to increase blood circulation c Take frequent work breaks Limit the amount of ex posure per day d Keep the tool well maintained fasteners tightened and worn parts replaced If you experience any of the symptoms of this condition immediately discontinue use and see your physician about these symptoms Mix and store fuel in a container approved for gasoline Mix fuel outdoors where there are no sparks or flames Wipe up any fuel spillage Move 30 ft away from refueling site before starting engine Stop the engine and allow to cool before refueling or storing the unit Allow the engine to cool empty the fuel tank and secure the unit from moving before transporting in a vehicle Check for damaged parts Before further use of the tool any part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function Check for

12. ck it periodically for tightness during use to avoid serious injury BASIC CUTTING PROCEDURE WARNING Follow the steps below to prevent damage to tree or shrub Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with bark Do not use a back and forth sawing motion side shields a hard hat and safety shoes when m Accelerate the engine to full throttle just before entering operating tools Failure to do so could result in the cut by squeezing the throttle trigger Keep the engine o being thrown into your eyes resulting in at full throttle the entire time you are cutting posable Senous inu E Make a shallow first cut 1 4 of limb diameter on the underside of the limb close to the main limb or trunk Make a second cut from the top side of the limb outboard from the first cut E Make a final cut close to trunk NOTE Forsecond and final cuts from top of limb or branch hold front cutting guide against the limb being cut This will help steady the limb and make it easier to cut Allow chain to cut for you exert only light downward pressure If you force the cut damage to the bar chain or engine can result A WARNING Do not use any attachments or accessories not rec ommended by the manufacturer of this tool The use of attachments or accessories not recommended can result in serious personal injury A WARNING To avoid kickback binding of the saw bar and possible injury never cut limbs that the pruner does not reach when supported
13. e adequate for you to see clearly Do not use on a ladder or unstable support Always cut with both feet on solid ground to prevent being pulled off balance To protect yourself from electrocution do not operate within 50 feet of overhead electrical lines Before starting the engine make sure the chain is not contacting any object Always cut with the engine running at full speed Fully squeeze the throttle trigger and maintain a steady cutting speed Do not force tool Use the correct tool for your applica tion The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed To protect yourself from falling branches do not stand di rectly under the branch or limb being cut This unit should not be held at an angle over 60 from ground level Keep the handles dry clean and free of oil or fuel mix ture Shut off the engine and make sure the cutting attachment has stopped before setting the unit down To prevent electrical shock or serious personal injury do not use this product with any AC power head Follow the sharpening and maintenance instructions for the saw chain Use only the replacement guide bars and low kickback chains specified for the unit REFUELING FUEL IS HIGHLY FLAMMABLE Take precautions when using to reduce the chance of serious personal injury Store fuel in a cool well ventilated area safely away from spark and or flame producing equipment Store fuel in containers s
14. ed Too much clearance increases the potential for kickback Too little clearance decreases the size of the wood chip thus decreasing the chain s cutting ability If cutter teeth have hit hard objects such as nails and stones or have been abraded by mud or sand on the wood have service dealer sharpen chain DEPTH GAUGE SETTING Y gt HOW TO SHARPEN THE CUTTERS See Figures 24 27 Be careful to file all cutters to the specified angles and to the same length as fast cutting can be obtained only when all cutters are uniform PARTS OF A CUTTER TOP PLATE CUTTING CORNER SIDE PLATE DEPTH GAUGE RIVET HOLE X GULLET E Tighten the chain tension enough that the chain does not wobble Do all of your filing at the mid point of the bar Wear gloves for protection 16 E Use a 5 32 in diameter round file and holder Keep the file level with the top plate of the tooth Do not let the file dip or rock E Using light but firm pressure stroke towards the front corner of the tooth Lift file away from the steel on each return stroke E Put a few firm strokes on every tooth File all left hand cutters in one direction Then move to the other side and file the right hand cutters in the opposite direction Oc casionally remove filings from the file with a wire brush LEFT HAND CUTTERS RIGHT HAND CUTTERS MAINTENANCE CAUTION Dull or improperly sharpened chain can cause excessive engine speed du
15. eep bystanders at least 50 ft away Minimum 50 15m Fig 8 OPERATION POSITION FOR STARTING See Figure 9 Lay the pruner on the ground and ensure that no objects or STARTER obstructions are in the immediate vicinity Make sure nothing GRIP can come in contact with the bar and chain STARTING AND STOPPING See Figures 10 12 TO START A COLD ENGINE DO NOT squeeze the throttle trigger until the engine starts and runs E Lay the trimmer on a flat bare surface E PRIME Press the primer bulb 7 times START LEVER E SET the start lever to the START position PULL the rope until the engine starts START E Allow the engine to run for 15 seconds POSITION E Squeeze trigger lock and throttle trigger E NOTE Squeezing the throttle trigger releases the start lever to the RUN position TO START A WARM ENGINE PULL the rope until the engine starts TO STOP THE ENGINE Press and hold the switch in the stop amp position until the engine stops ENGINE SWITCH START LEVER RUN an POSITION LOCK THROTTLE TRIGGER 12 MAINTENANCE A WARNING When servicing use only identical Ryobi replacement parts Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage A WARNING Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields during power tool operation or when
16. er turn at idle Turn the idle speed screw counterclockwise to reduce the idle RPM and stop the chain or contact a service dealer for ad justment and discontinue use until the repair is made Serious personal injury may result from the saw chain turning at idle IDLE SPEED SCREW 15 CHAIN OILER See Figure 22 E Use Premium Bar and Chain Oil It is designed for chains and chain oilers and is formulated to perform over a wide temperature range with no dilution required E Remove the cap and carefully pour approximately 8 oz of bar and chain oil into the chain oiler tank E Replace the cap and tighten securely E Check and refill the chain oiler tank every time the engine is fueled NOTE Do not use dirty used or otherwise contaminated oils Damage may occur to the oil pump bar or chain CHAIN OILER TANK REPLACE CAP REMOVE CAP MAINTENANCE CHAIN MAINTENANCE See Figure 23 For smooth and fast cutting the chain needs to be main tained properly The following conditions indicate that the chain requires sharpening E Wood chips are small and powdery E Chain must be forced through the wood during cutting E Chain cuts to one side During maintenance of the chain consider the following E Improper filing angle of the side plate can increase the risk of a severe kickback Depth gauge or raker clearance setting determines the height the cutter enters the wood and the size of the wood chip that is remov

18. hten E Reinstall the bolt lock washer and hex nut to secure E Connect the latch on the shoulder harness to the strap hanger SHOULDER STRAP J BARRIER HANDLE CONNECTING THE POWER HEAD TO THE PRUNER ATTACHMENT See Figure 4 The pruner attachment connects to the power head by means of a coupler device To install the attachment E Loosen the knob on the coupler of the power head shaft and remove the end cap from the attachment E Push in the button located on the shaft of the pruner at tachment Align the button with the guide recess on the power head coupler and slide the two shafts together Rotate extension shaft until button locks into the posi tioning hole NOTE The attachment should only be operated with the blade in a vertical position If the button does not release completely in the positioning hole the shaft is not locked into place Slightly rotate from side to side until the button is locked into place E Tighten the knob securely To remove m Loosen the knob E Push in the button and twist the shafts to remove and separate ends POWER HEAD SHAFT PLER GUIDE a RECESS BUTTON PRUNER ATTACHMENT CHAIN OILER Add bar and chain oil in the chain oiler tank before starting the engine of the power head FUELING AND REFUELING THE PRUNER FUEL MIXTURE This productis powered by a2 cycle engine and requires pre mixing gasoline and 2 cycle oil Pre mix unleaded gasoline a

20. n Refer to Replacing the Bar and Chain for additional information NOTE Acold chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the guide bar the chain is snug but it can be turned by hand without binding Chain must be re tensioned whenever the flats on the drive links hang out of the bar groove as shown in fig 20 During normal operation the temperature of the chain will increase The drive links of a correctly tensioned warm chain will hang approximately 050 in 1 25 mm out of the bar groove as shown in fig 14 NOTE New chain tends to stretch check chain tension frequently and tension as required A CAUTION Chain tensioned while warm may be too tight upon cool ing Check the cold tension before next use APPROX 050 IN 1 25 mm MAINTENANCE REPLACING THE BAR See Figures 15 20 A WARNING To avoid possible serious injury stop engine before re placing the bar chain or performing any maintenance operation E Remove the bar nut and drivecase cover E The bar contains a bar stud slot that fits over the bar stud The bar also contains a chain tensioning pin hole which fits over the chain tensioning pin E Place the bar onto the bar stud so that the chain tension ing pin fits into the chain tensioning pin hole E Fit the chain over the sprocket and into the bar groove The cutters on the top of the bar should face toward the bar tip in the direction of

24. odification is misuse and could result in a hazardous condition leading to possible serious personal injury A WARNING To prevent accidental starting that could cause serious personal injury always disconnect the engine spark plug wire from the spark plug when assembling parts ATTACHING THE J BARRIER HANDLE See Figure 2 E Hold the top and bottom clamp snugly in position on the shaft housing so that the handle will be located to the operator s left Insert the end of the handle between the clamps Align the bolt holes and push the long bolt 1 4 20 x 1 1 2 in through the handle side Place short bolt 1 4 20 x 1 in through opposite side of the clamp Install the flat washer lock washers and hex nuts to hold the assembly in place E After assembly is complete adjust the position of the handle for best balance and comfort Tighten the long bolt first and then the short bolt SHORT BOLT LONG BOLT J BARRIER HANDLE FLAT WASHER HEX NUT LOCK WASHER INSTALLING THE SHOULDER STRAP See Figure 3 The shoulder strap provides added support of the pruner during operation To install the shoulder strap bracket E Remove the hex nut lock washer and bolt from the shoulder strap bracket ASSEMBLY E Pull apart the ends of the bracket to expand slightly E Slide the bracket over the power head shaft immediately behind the J Barrier Handle E Squeeze bracket ends together to retig

29. ring cutting which may result in severe engine damage AIR FILTER COVER A WARNING Improper chain sharpening increases the potential of kickback Failure to replace or repair damaged chain can cause serious injury CLEANING THE EXHAUST PORT AND MUFFLER Depending on the type of fuel used the type and amount of oil used and or your operating conditions the exhaust port and muffler may become blocked with carbon deposits If you notice a power loss with your gas powered tool a quali fied service technician will need to remove these deposits S FILTER to restore performance SPARK ARRESTOR The spark arrestor must be cleaned or replaced every 25 hours or yearly to ensure proper performance of your product For the location of the spark arrestor and specific cleaning in structions contact your nearest authorized service center REPLACING AND CLEANING AIR FILTER See Figures 28 29 For proper performance and long life keep air filter clean E Remove the air filter cover by pushing down on the latch with your thumb while gently pulling on the cover E Remove the filter clean it in warm soapy water Rinse and let dry completely For best performance replace annually E Reinstall the filter E Replace the air filter cover by inserting the tabs on the bottom of the cover into the slots on the air filter base push the cover up until it latches securely in place AIR FILTER COVER 17 MAINTENANCE STORAGE
30. sistance LIMBING AND PRUNING See Figures 8 9 This unit is designed for trimming small branches and limbs up to 6 in in diameter For best results observe the follow ing precautions E Plan the cut carefully Be aware of the direction in which the branch will fall E Branches may fall in unexpected directions Do not stand directly under the branch being cut E The most typical cutting application is to position the unit at an angle of 60 or less depending on the specific situ ation as shown below As the angle of the pruner shaft to ground increases the difficulty of making the first cut from the underside of limb increases E Remove long branches in several stages E Cut lower branches first to allow the top branches more room to fall 11 60 MAXIMUM Work slowly keeping both hands on the saw with a firm grip Maintain secure footing and balance Keep the tree between you and the chain while limbing Cut from side of tree opposite branch you are cutting Do not cut from a ladder this is extremely dangerous Leave this operation for professionals Do not to make the flush cut next to the main limb or trunk until you have cut off the limb further out to reduce the weight Following proper cutting procedures will prevent stripping the bark from the main member Do not use the pruner for felling or bucking To prevent electrocution do not operate within 50 ft of overhead electrical lines K

33. the chain rotation E Replace the side case cover and install the bar nut Tighten the bar nut finger tight only The bar must be free to move for tension adjustment CHAIN BAR BAR NUT DRIVECASE co BAR STUD SLOT gt a E n CHAIN TENSIONING PIN HOLE Fig 17 E Remove all slack from chain by turning the chain tension ing screw clockwise assuring that the chain seats into the bar groove during tensioning E Lift the tip of the bar up to check for sag Release the tip of the bar and turn the chain tensioning screw 1 2 turn clockwise Repeat this process until sag does not exist E Hold the tip of the bar up and tighten the bar nut se curely E Chain is correctly tensioned when there is no slack on the underside of the bar the chain is snug but it can be turned by hand without binding NOTE If chain is too tight it will not rotate Loosen the bar nut slightly and turn adjusting screw 1 4 turn counter clockwise Lift the tip of the bar up and retighten bar nut CHAIN ROTATION SPROCKET BAR NUT MAINTENANCE IDLE SPEED ADJUSTMENT See Figure 21 If the chain turns at idle the idle speed screw needs ad justing on your trimmer engine Turn the idle speed screw counterclockwise to reduce the idle RPM and stop the chain movement If the saw chain still moves at idle speed contact a service dealer for adjustment and discontinue use until the repair is made A WARNING The saw chain should nev
