1. 30 inches 76 cm CONFIGURING YOUR UNIT You can configure your unit using a trimmer head for grass and light weeds or a weed blade for cutting grass weeds and brush up to 1 2 inch 1 cm in diameter To assemble your unit go to the section for the desired configuration and follow the instructions ASSEMBLY INFORMATION TRIMMER HEAD NOTE Remove the blade and metal shield be fore attaching the plastic shield and trimmer head To remove blade align hole in the dust 6 cup with the hole in the side of the gearbox by rotating the blade Insert a small screwdriver into aligned holes This will keep the shaft from turning while loosening the blade nut Remove blade nut by turning clockwise Remove the screwdriver Remove both washers and blade To remove metal shield loosen and remove the four mounting screws See ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD and INSTALLATION OF THE METAL BLADE for illustrations Be sure to store all parts and instructions for future use INSTALLATION OF THE TRIMMER HEAD NOTE Before installing the trimmer head make sure the dust cup and retaining washer are positioned on the shaft of the gearbox The retaining washer must be positioned with the raised section toward the gearbox 1 Align hole in the dust cup with the hole in the side of the gearbox by rotating the dust cup Insert a small screwdriver into aligned holes This will keep the shaft from turn ing while tightening trimmer head 2

Screwdriver it SS wan While holding the screwdriver in position thread trimmer head onto the shaft by turn ing counterclockwise Tighten until secure Dust cup Retaining _ washer i Trimmer head 4 Remove the screwdriver ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD A WARNING The shield must be prop erly installed The shield provides partial protection from the risk of thrown objects to the operator and others andis equipped witha line limiter blade which cuts excess line to the proper length The line limiter blade on under side of shield is sharp and can cut you 1 Remove wing nut from shield Insert bracket into slot on shield Pivot shield until bolt passes through hole in bracket 2 3 4 Tighten the wing nut securely Wing Nut o Bracket BLADE NOTE Remove the trimmer head and plastic shield before attaching the metal shield and installing the weed blade To remove the trimmer head align hole in the dust cup with the hole in the side of the gearbox by rotating the dust cup Insert a small screwdriver into aligned holes This will keep the shaft from turning while loos ening the trimmer head Remove the trimmer head by turning clockwise Remove the screw driver To remove the plastic shield loosen and remove wing nut Pivot shield to release bracket from slot See INSTALLATION OF THE TRIM MER HEAD and ATTACHING THE PLASTIC SHIELD for illustrations Be sure to store all parts and instruc

14. he line into the cutting area The right and wrong ways are shown below Tip of the line does the cutting Line crowded into work area Wrong 7 e Theline will easily remove grass and weeds from around walls fences trees and flower beds but it also can cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences For trimming or scalping use less than full throttle to increase line life and decrease head wear especially e During light duty cutting e Near objects around which the line can wrap such as small posts trees or fence wire For mowing or sweeping use full throttle for a good clean job TRIMMING Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches 8 cm above the ground and at an angle Allow only the tip of the line to make contact Do not force trimmer line into work area Trimming 3 inches 8 cm above ground SCALPING The scalping technique re moves unwanted vegetation down to the ground Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches 8 cm above the ground and at an angle Allow the tip of the line to strike the ground around trees posts monuments etc This technique increases line wear Scalping y MOWING Your trimmer is ideal for mowing in places conventional lawn mowers cannot reach In the mowing position keep the line parallel to the ground Avoid pressing the head into the ground as this can scalp the ground and damage the tool SWEEPING The fanning acti
15. he locking re lease button is locked in the primary hole and the knob is securely tightened before operat ing the unit HANDLEBAR ASSEMBLY DANGER RISK OF CUT To avoid serious injury the barrier portion of the handlebar must be installed as shown on the upper shaft of the powerhead to provide a barrier between op erator and the spinning blade Attach shaft clamp above arrow on safety warning decal on the upper shaft powerhead end of unit Ensure handlebar is positioned on handlebar clamp be tween the arrows on the handlebar decal NOTE The shaft clamp base has four spacer tabs attached These tabs are pro vided to adapt this attachment for use with powerheads that have a 1 diameter upper shaft the shaft clamp will not tighten down se curely on the 1 diameter upper shaft without using these spacer tabs The tabs must be broken off completely before use and placed over the screw holes on the clamp base These tabs are not needed for powerheads with a 7 8 upper shaft are HANDLEBAR CLAMP BASE Spacer Tabs D ut A CS Gee Spacer Tabs lt lt Ss N a positioned for use on 1 diameter upper shaft 1 Place the shaft clamp over the upper shaft above the arrowon the safety decal 2 Position the clamp base under the upper shaft and align the shaft clamp and clamp base screw holes use spacer tabs be tween shaft clamp and clamp base if nec essary to secure clamp i e for 1 diame ter

18. mplete unit for loose or damaged parts Clean the unit and decals using a damp cloth with a mild detergent e Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth BLADE MAINTENANCE A WARNING The blade will continue to spin after the engine stops or after the throttle trigger has been released To avoid serious injury make sure the blade has stopped coasting anddisconnect the spark plug before performing work on the blade WARNING Always replace a blade thatis bent warped cracked broken or dam aged in any other way Never attempt to straighten and reuse a damaged blade Use only specified replacement blade Wear pro tective gloves when handling or performing maintenance on the blade to help avoid injury e Check blade for flatness periodically Lay the blade on a flat surface to inspect for flat ness Throw away a blade that is not flat SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS REPLACING THE LINE Remove spool by firmly pulling on tap but ton 2 Clean entire surface of hub and spool 3 Replace with a pre wound spool or cut two lengths of 12 1 2 feet of 0 080 2 mm di ameter Weed Eater brand line A WARNING Never use wire rope string etc which can break off and becomea dangerous missile 4 Insert ends of the lines about 1 2 inch 1 cm into the small holes on the inside of spool Spool ee Small Holes Line in Notch Line exit holes dl Line in Notch 11 a Wind the line evenly and tightly onto the
19. ntact material it cannot cut such as stumps rocks fences metal etc or clusters of hard woody brush with a diameter greater than 1 2 inch 1 cm Use asharp blade A dull blade is more likely to snag and thrust Cut only at full throttle The blade will have maximum cutting power and is less likely to bind or stall Feed the blade deliberately and not too rapidly The blade can thrust away if it is fed too rapidly Cut only from your left to your right Cutting on right side of the shield will throw debris away from the operator Use the shoulder strap and keep a firm grip on the unit with both hands A properly ad justed shoulder strap will support the weight of the unit freeing your arms and hands to control and guide the cutting motion Keep feet comfortably spread apart and braced for a possible sudden rapid thrust of unit Do not overreach Keep firm footing and balance Keep blade below waist level It will be eas ier to maintain control of unit Do not raise the engine above your waist as the blade can come dangerously close to your body Do not swing the unit with such force that you are in danger of losing your balance Bring the powerhead engine to cutting speed before entering the material to be cut If the blade does not turn when you squeeze the throttle trigger of the powerhead make sure the attachment is fully inserted into the coupler Always release the throttle trigger and allow powerhea
20. ollow ing assembly steps are in the parts bag 1 Remove the retaining washer from the threaded shaft of the gearbox Leave the dust cup on the shaft 2 Install the blade and the retaining washer over the threaded shaft 3 Make sure the raised part of the retaining washer is facing the gearbox and the raised area fits into the hole in the center of the blade 4 Slide the blade and retaining washer onto the shaft of the gearbox 5 Place the cupped washer onto the shaft Make sure the cupped side of the washer is toward the blade 6 Install the blade nut by threading onto the shaft counterclockwise Gearbox Shield Retaining Blade Washer gt Cupped Washer Co EP NOTE Make sure all parts are in place as illus trated and the blade is sandwiched between the dust cup and the retaining washer There should be no space between the blade and the dust cup or the retaining washer 7 Align hole in dust cup with hole in side of gearbox by rotating the blade 8 Insert a small screwdriver into aligned 9 holes This will keep the shaft from turn while holding screwdriver in position ing while tightening the blade nut 10 Remove the screwdriver 11 Turn blade by hand If the blade binds against the shield or appears to be un even the blade is not centered and you must reinstall NOTE To remove blade insert screwdriver into aligned holes Unthread the nut and remove parts Be sure to store p
21. on of the rotat ing line can be used to blow away loose debris from an area Keep the line parallel to and above the area surface and swing the tool from side to side Sweeping OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR BRUSHCUTTER ATTACHMENT e Blade Thrust is a reaction that only occurs when using a bladed unit This reaction can cause serious injury such as amputation Carefully study this section It is important that you understand what causes blade thrust how you can reduce the chance of its occur ring and how you can remain in control of unit if blade thrust occurs WHAT CAUSES BLADE THRUST Blade Thrust can occur when spinning blade con tacts an object that it does not cut This contact causes blade to stop for an instant and then suddenly move or thrust away from object that was hit The thrusting reaction can be violent enough to cause operator to be pro pelled in any direction and lose control of unit The uncontrolled unit can cause serious injury if blade contacts operator or others WHEN BLADE THRUST OCCURS Blade Thrust can occur without warning if the blade snags stalls or binds This is more likely to occur in areas where it is diffi cult to see the material being cut By using the unit properly the occurrence of blade thrust will be reduced and the operator will be less likely to lose control Cut only grass weeds and woody brush up to 1 2 inch 1 cm in diameter with weed blade Do not let blade co
22. ors Keep away from sparks or flames Use a container approved for fuel Do not smoke or allow smoking near fuel or the unit or while using the unit Avoid spilling fuel or oil Wipe up all fuel spills before starting engine love at least 10 feet 3 meters away from fu eling site before starting engine Stop engine and allow it to cool before re moving fuel cap e Remove fuel cap slowly CUTTING SAFETY A WARNING Inspect the area to be cut before each use Remove objects rocks bro ken glass nails wire string etc which can be thrown or become entangled in the blade or trimmer line e Keepothers including children animals by standers and helpers at least 50 feet 15 meters away Stop the engine immediately if you are approached Always keep engine on the right hand side of your body e Hold the unit firmly with both hands Keep firm footing and balance Do not over reach Keep blade trimmer head below waist level Do not raise powerhead engine above your waist Keep all parts of your body away from spin ning line blade and muffler Cut from your left to your right Cutting on the right side of the shield will throw debris away from the operator e Use only in daylight or good artificial light e Use only for jobs explained in this manual TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE Stop the powerhead engine before carrying unit Keep muffler away from your body Allow engine to cool and secure unit before storing or
23. spool Wind in the direction of the arrows found on the spool Push the lines into the notches leaving 3 to 5 inches 7 12 cm unwound Insert the lines into the the exit holes in the hub as shown in the illustration Align the notches with the line exit holes Push spool into hub until it snaps into place om N p 10 Pull the lines extending outside of the hub to release the lines from the notches TRIMMER HEAD REPLACEMENT Refer to the ASSEMBLY section for trimmer head replacement instructions and illustra tions BLADE REPLACEMENT Refer to the ASSEMBLY section for blade re placement instructions and illustrations STORAGE WARNING Perform the following steps after each use e Allow attachment and gearbox to cool be fore storing or ene e Store attachment with blade shield in place Position attachment so that any sharp ob ject cannot accidentally cause injury e Store the attachmentin a dry well ventilated area out of the reach of children SEASONAL STORAGE Prepare attachment for storage at end of sea son or if it will not be used for 30 days or more If your brushcutter attachment is to be stored for a period of time e Clean the entire attachment e Inspect the blade shield area and clean any dirt grass leaves or debris that has col lected Inspect the blade and blade shield replace a blade that is bent warped cracked broken or damaged in any other way Lightly oil external metal
24. tions for future use Never use the trimmer head with the metal blade installed ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD A WARNING The metal shield must be properly installed on the tool anytime the tool is used with a blade The forward tip of the metal shield helps to reduce the occurrence of blade thrust which can cause serious injury such as amputation to the operator or by standers Failure to install the shield in the position shown can result in serious injury to the operator The length of the shield must be aligned with the length of the shaft 1 Place the metal shield under the gearbox and align the screw holes ale Gearbox Shield 2 Insert and thread the 4 mounting screws through the holes of the gearbox and the metal shield Tighten evenly and secure ly with the hex wrench provided INSTALLATION OF THE METAL BLADE A WARNING Wear protective gloves when handling or erformin maintenance on the blade to avoid injury The blade is sharp and can cut you even an it is not moving WARNING Do not use any blades or fastening hardware other than the washers and nuts shown in the following illustrations These parts must be provided by Poulan Weed Eater and installed as shown below Failure to use proper parts can cause the blade to fly off and seriously hurt you or others NOTE The dust cup and retaining washer are located on the gearbox shaft and not in the parts bag All other fasteners mentioned in the f
25. upper shaft Handlebar A POWERHEAD END Handlebar Clamp between arrows on amp handlebar oe Clamp Clamp es Knob me Base E Clamp N KS Screws Arrow on Safety Decal ATTACHMENT END 3 Insert the four screws into the screw holes 4 Secure shaft clamp by tightening screws with the hex wrench 5 Position the handlebar as shown ensur ing the handlebar is positioned on the handlebar clamp between the arrows on the handlebar decal 6 Retighten handlebar by turning clamp knob clockwise until handlebar is secure and stationary in clamp clamp knob can not be overtightened SHOULDER STRAP ASSEMBLY WARNING Proper shoulder strap and handlebar adjustments must be made with the engine completely stopped before us ing unit The shoulder strap clamp must be installed as shown above the handlebar on the upper shaft powerhead end of unit NOTE The lower shoulder strap clamp has two spacer tabs attached These tabs are pro vided to adapt this attachment for use with powerheads that have a 1 2 5 cm diameter upper shaft the shoulder strap clamp will not tighten down securely on the 1 2 5 cm diam eter upper shaft without using these spacer tabs The tabs must be broken off completely before use and placed over the screw holes on the lower shoulder strap clamp These tabs are not needed for powerheads with a 7 8 2 2 cm upper shaft LOWER SHOULDER STRAP CLAMP gt
