1. ASSEMBLY A socket wrench set will make assembly easier Standard wrench sizes are listed 1 5 16 Wrench 1 Adjustable Wrench 1 7 16 Wrench 1 9 16 Wrench 1 1 2 Wrench 1 3 4 Wrench When right hand or left hand is mentioned in this manual it means when you are standing in the operating position behind the handle UNPACK CARTON 1 Remove all loose parts from carton 2 Examine all items Compare with list of unassembled parts and hardware 3 Remove lawn mower housing with care Avoid touching blade under housing Always wear gloves or other protection when working under or lifting mower ASSEMBLE LOWER HANDLE NOTE For ease of lower handle as sembly raise rear of mower housing and g block securely 1 Position lower handle on housing so cut off flat is forward as shown 2 Align holes in handle with holes in housing as shown and assemble 3 8 16 x 3 4 hex bolts flat washers and locknuts Tighten securely 3 Repeat for opposite side of mower A 2D N Flat washers Cut off flat forward ASSEMBLE UPPER HANDLE 1 Position upper handle over lower handle with small hole for mounting up stop bracket to right side and as semble 1 4 20 x 1 1 2 hex bolts and 1 4 20 locknuts Tighten securely ASSEMBLE UPSTOP BRACKET 2 Position upstop bracket on the right inside of upper handle as shown 3 Install the hex washer head screw into the hole in up stop bracket and upper handle Tighte2. fuel next season See Storage Instructions for additional information Never use engine orcarburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur TO STOP ENGINE e To stop engine release operator pres ence control bar TO START ENGINE NOTE Due to protective coatings on the engine a small amount of smoke may be present during the initial use of the prod uct and should be considered normal 1 To start a cold engine push primer three 3 times before trying to start Use a firm push This step is not usually necessary when starting an engine which has already run for a few minutes 2 Hold operator presence control bar downto the handle and pull starter handle quickly Do not allow starter rope to snap back NOTE In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat priming steps In warmer weather over priming may cause flooding and engine will not start If you do flood engine wait a few minutes before attempting to start and do not repeat priming steps 11 MOWING TIPS A CAUTION Do not use de thatcher blade attachments on your mower Such attachments are hazardous will damage your mower and could void your warranty e Under certain conditions such as very tall grass it may be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the engine and leaving clumps of grass clippings It may also be necessary to reduce ground speed and or run the lawn mower over the area a

PI service classification SG SL Select the oil s SAE viscosity grade according to your expected operating temperature SAE VISCOSITY GRADES F 20 0 30 32 40 60 80 100 C 30 20 10 0 10 20 30 40 TEMPERATURE RANGE ANTICIPATED BEFORE NEXT OIL CHANGE NOTE Although multi viscosity oils 5W30 10W30 etc improve starting in cold weather these multi viscosity oils will result in increased oil consumption when used above 32 F Check your engine oil level more frequently to avoid possible engine damage from running low on oil Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or at least once a year if the lawn mower is not used for 25 hours in one year Check the crankcase oil level before starting the engine and after each five 5 hours of continuous use Tighten oil plug securely each time you check the oil level TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL 1 Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug 2 Be sure lawn mower is on level sur face NOTE Oil will drain more freely when warm Catch oil in a suitable container 3 Remove bottom oil drain plug 4 After oil has drained completely replace oil drain plug and tighten se curely Fill engine with oil See ADD OIL in the Operation section of this manual Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug fp Drain plug AIR FILTER Your engine will not run properly and may be damaged by using

9. g edge of blade oppo site sharp edge is up toward engine 4 Install the blade bolt with the lock washer and hardened washer into blade adapter and crankshaft 5 Use block of wood between blade and lawn mower housing and tighten the blade bolt turning clockwise e The recommended tightening torque is 35 40 ft Ibs 47 54 N m IMPORTANT Blade bolt is heat treated If bolt needs replacing replace only with approved bolt shown in the Repair Parts section of this manual Blade adapter Key Crankshaft lt keyway Lockwasher PA Blade bolt Hardened is washer Trailing Lage Crankshaft TO SHARPEN BLADE NOTE We do not recommend sharpening blade but if you do be sure the blade is balanced Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced An unbalanced blade will cause eventual damage to mower or engine e The blade can be sharpened with a file or on a grinding wheel Do not attempt to sharpen while on the mower e To check blade balance drive a nail into a beam or wall Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed Place center hole of blade over the head of the nail If blade is balanced it should remain in a horizontal position If either end of the blade moves downward sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced ENGINE LUBRICATION Use only high quality detergent oil rated with A
10. hot during oper ation and remain hot after engine has stopped To avoid severe burns on contact stay away from these areas I GENERAL OPERATION e Read understand and follow all instructions on the machine and in the manual s before starting Be thoroughly familiar with the controls and the proper use of the machine before starting e Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating parts Keep clear of the dis charge opening at all times e Only allow responsible individuals who are familiar with the instructions to operate the machine e Clear the area of objects such as rocks toys wire bones sticks etc which could be picked up and thrown by blade e Be sure the area is clear of other people before mowing Stop machine if anyone enters the area e Do not operate the mower when bare foot or wearing open sandals Always wear substantial foot wear e Do not pull mower backwards unless absolutely necessary Always look down and behind before and while moving backwards e Never direct discharged material toward anyone Avoid discharging material against a wall or obstruction Material may richo chet back toward the operator Stop the blade when crossing gravel surfaces e Do not operate the mower without proper guards plates grass catcher or other safety protective devices in place e See manufacturer s instructions for proper operation and installation of accessories Only use accessories ap proved by

15. lug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug e Clean the underside of your lawn mower by scraping to remove build up of grass and trash Clean engine often to keep trash from accumulating A clogged engine runs hotter and shortens engine life Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all gasoline oil etc We do not recommend using a garden hose to clean lawn mower unless the electrical system muffler air filter and carburetor are covered to keep water out Water in engine can result in short ened engine life SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS AWARNING To avoid serious injury before performing any service or adjustments 1 Release control bar and stop engine 2 Make sure the blade and all moving parts have completely stopped 3 Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where it cannot come in contact with plug LAWN MOWER TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT See TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT in the Operation section of this manual REAR DEFLECTOR The rear deflector attached between the rear wheels of your mower is provided to minimize the possibility that objects will be thrown out of the rear of the mower into the operator mowing position If the deflector becomes damaged it should be replaced DISCHARGE GUARD The discharge guard attached to the discharge opening of your lawn mower is provided to prevent the possibility of injury resulting from objects being thrown out of the discharge o
16. must maintain unit as instructed in this manual Some adjustments will need to be made periodically to properly maintain your unit At least once a season check to see if you should make any of the adjustments described in the Service and Adjustments section of this manual e At least once a year replace the spark plug clean or replace air filter element and check blade for wear A new spark plug and clean new air filter element assure proper air fuel mixture and help your engine run better and last longer e Follow the maintenance schedule in this manual BEFORE EACH USE e Check engine oil level e Check for loose fasteners LUBRICATION Keep unit well lubricated See LUBRICATION CHART Change more often if operating under a heavy load or in high outdoor temperatures Service more often if operating in dirty or dusty conditions Replace blades more often when mowing in sandy soil Charge 48 hours at end of season And after each 5 hours of use LUBRICATION CHART Engine oil Discharge guard hinge pin Spray lubricant See ENGINE in Maintenance section IMPORTANT Do not oil or grease plastic wheel bearings Viscous lubricants will attract dust and dirt that will shorten the life of the self lubricating bearings If you feel they must be lubricated use only a dry powdered 9 graphite type lubricant sparingly LAWN MOWER Always observe safety rules when per forming an
17. n securely AS VIEWED FROM FRONT OF MOWER Up stop Hex washer head screw ASSEMBLE WHEELS Cutting height is determined by assem bling the wheels in one of four possible positions on the mower housing All wheels must be in the same height posi tion for even cutting 1 For each wheel assemble shoulder bolt and spacer as shown 2 Assemble 1 1 4 diameter washers rear wheels only and 3 8 16 locknuts on inside of mower housing and tighten securely 1 1 4 diameter Washer Rear wheels only Mower housing Shoulder bolt Wheel Locknut ASSEMBLE DISCHARGE GUARD 1 Place discharge guard on top of lawn mower discharge opening 2 Install two 2 1 4 20 x 3 4 hex bolts through housing and discharge guard 3 Install two 2 3 4 diameter washers and two 2 1 4 20 locknuts Tighten securely Locknuts Washers T Discharge guard Hex bolts ea INSTALL CONTROL BAR 1 Position control bar so flattened sec tion with hole is on opposite side of handle as up stop bracket 2 Insert one end of control bar into handle hole on inside of handle Care fully push in on opposite end of control bar and insert into hole on opposite side of handle Control bar Up stop bracket ASSEMBLE ENGINE ZONE CONTROL CABLE TO ENGINE Cable attaches under the brake arm cover which is opposite the spark plug end of engine 1 Straighten cable and find the end with the smal
18. nt from the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground If this is not possible then refuel such equipment with a portable container rather than from a gasoline dispenser nozzle Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or container opening at all times until fueling is complete Do not use a nozzle lock open device If fuel is spilled on clothing change clothing immediately Never overfill fuel tank Replace gas cap and tighten securely V GENERAL SERVICE Never run machine inside a closed area Never make adjustments or repairs with the engine motor running Disconnect the spark plug wire and keep wire away from plug to prevent accidental starting e Keep nuts and bolts especially blade attachment bolts tight and keep equip ment in good condition Never tamper with safety devices Check their proper operation regularly e Keep machine free of grass leaves or 4 other debris build up Clean oil or fuel spill age Allow machine to cool before storing Stop and inspect the equipment if you strike an object Repair if necessary before restarting Never attempt to make wheel height e Mower blades are sharp and can cut adjustments while the engine is running Wrap the blade s or wear gloves and Grass catcher components are subject to use extra caution when servicing them wear damage and deterioration which Do not change the engine governor set could expose moving parts or allow ob
19. ntainer of oil with the unit Slowly pour the entire container down the oil fill spout into the engine NOTE Initial oil fill requires only 18 oz due to residual oil in engine from the manufacturers 100 quality testing When changing oil you may need 20 oz 4 Insert and tighten dipstick IMPORTANT e Check oil level before each use Add oil if needed Fill to full line on dipstick e Change the oil after every 25 hours of operation or each season You may need to change the oil more often under dusty dirty conditions See TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL in the Mainte nance section of this manual Gasoline filler cap ADD GASOLINE e Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck Do not overfill Use fresh clean regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum of 87 octane Do not mix oil with gasoline Pur chase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel freshness A CAUTION Wipe off any spilled oil or fuel Do not store spill or use gasoline near an open flame A CAUTION Alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage To avoid engine problems the fuel system should be emptied before storage of 30 days or longer Empty the gas tank start the engine and let it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty Use fresh

25. securely fastened Inspect moving parts for damage breakage and wear Replace if necessary 4 Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces sand lightly before painting ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM IMPORTANT It is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in essential fuel system parts such as carburetor fuel filter fuel hose or tank during storage Alcohol blended fuels called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol can attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids during storage Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine while in storage e Empty the fuel tank by starting the en gine and letting it run until the fuel lines and carburetor are empty e Never use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank or permanent damage may occur e Use fresh fuel next season NOTE Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alternative in minimizing the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage Add stabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or storage container Always follow the mix ratio found on stabilizer container Run engine at least 10 minutes after adding stabilizer to allow the stabilizer to reach the carburetor Do not empty the gas tank and carburetor if using fuel stabilizer ENGINE OIL Drain oil with engine warm and replace with clean engine oil See ENGINE in the Maintenance section of this manual CYLINDER 1 Remove spark plug 2 Pour 29 ml of oil through spark plug h
