7. e Do not use worn or broken tools and testers e Never assume that power has been disconnected from a circuit First check that it has been powered off Always look carefully for possible hazards in your work area Examples of these hazards are moist floors nongrounded power extension cables power surges and missing safety grounds Do not touch live electrical circuits with the reflective surface of a plastic dental mirror The surface is conductive such touching can cause personal injury and machine damage e Do not service the following parts with the power on when they are removed from their normal operating places in a machine Power supply units Pumps Blowers and fans Motor generators and similar units This practice ensures correct grounding of the units e f an electrical accident occurs Use caution do not become a victim your self Switch off power Send another person to get medical aid Safety Inspection Guide The intent of this inspection guide is to assist you in identi fying potentially unsafe conditions on these products Each machine as it was designed and built had required safety items installed to protect users and service personnel from injury This guide addresses only those items However good judgment should be used to identify potential safety hazards due to attachment of non IBM features or options not covered by this inspection guide If any

9. 2 Power off the computer Remove the battery pack and measure the voltage between battery terminals 2 and 7 See the fol lowing figure Terminal Signal Voltage V dc Sense Power 8 V dc 112 ThinkPad i Series 1400 HMM Terminal Signal Voltage V dc 3 Reserved 4 Reserved 5 Thermal 6 Sense 7 Ground Note Signal lines not used in these steps are used for communication between the system and the battery 3 If the voltage is less than 8 V dc recharge the battery pack If the voltage is still less than 8 V dc after recharging replace the battery System Board Check The system board performs processing functions Thus the system board can cause processor problems To verify the problem do the following 1 Boot from the diagnostics diskette and start the PC Doctor program please refer to Running the PC Doctor Diagnostics Program on page 135 2 Run the System Board test to verify the symptom This test verifies both the system board If the tests detect a system board problem replace the System board Note Don t touch the keyboard and pointing device when the system board system board test is running This may cause an unexpected error Memory Check DIMM are available for increasing memory capacity DIMM DIMM Total Memory 32MB OMB 32MB OMB 32MB 32MB 32MB 32MB 64MB 64MB OMB 64MB OMB 64MB

14. then proceed to the next step 1 Unplug the AC Adapter cable from the computer and measure the output voltage at the plug of the AC Adapter cable Sf E Pin Voltage V dc 1 19 0 20 5 2 Ground ThinkPad i Series 1400 Part I 111 e If the measured voltage is correct replace the system board e Ifthe problems still persist go to Undetermined Problems on page 131 e If the voltage is not correct go to the next step Unplug the AC Adapter cable from the AC power outlet and wait for five minutes or longer to allow the over voltage protection circuit of the AC Adapter to be fully discharged and initialized Plug the AC Adapter cable into the AC power outlet Measure the output voltage of the AC Adapter If the voltage is still not correct replace the AC Adapter Note An audible noise from the AC Adapter does not always indicate a defective adapter Checking the Operational Charging To check operational charging use a discharged battery pack or a battery pack that has less than 50 of the total power remaining when installed in the computer Perform operational charging 1 If the battery indicator does not turn on remove the battery pack and leave it to return to room temper ature Reinstall the battery pack If the charge indicator still does not turn on replace the battery pack Checking the Battery Pack To check the battery pack do the following 1

18. 128MB 192MB 128MB 128MB 256MB CAUTION This system cannot work without DIMM memory Memory errors might stop system operation show error messages on the screen or hang the system Use the following procedure to isolate memory problems Note Make sure that the DIMM is properly installed into the connector A loose connection can cause an error Power off the computer and replace the DIMM 2 Boot from the diagnostics diskette and start the POA program please refer to Running the POA Diagnos tics Program on page 49 3 Run the Memory item to run the memory test If no error appears install a new DIMM if an error appears replace the system board Keyboard and External Input Device Check Note f an external keyboard is attached remove it if the internal Keyboard has to be tested If the internal keyboard does not work or an unexpected character appears make sure that the flexible cable extending from the keyboard is correctly seated in the con nector on the TrackPoint board If the tests do not detect a keyboard problem run the Key board test by doing the following 1 Boot from the diagnostics diskette and start the PQA program please refer to Running the POA Diagnos tics Program on page 49 2 Go to Diag and select Manual Test then choose Keyboard from the Test Item and press F2 to execute 3 Check that when each key is pressed the key s posi tion on the keyboard layout on the scr
