Instructions for your DIAL A MATIC CLEANER WITH AUTOMATIC POWER DRIVE Model 1170 POWER DRIVE HANDLE GRIP MANUAL TRANSPORT BUTTON DISENGAGE DRIVE ON OFF SWITCH COVER LATCH CARRYING HANDLE BAG INDICATOR SUCTION DIAL OPENING FOR CLEANING ATTACHMENTS NOZZLE HOSE WRAP AROUND FURNITURE GUARD Your Power Drive Cleaner has been completely assembled at our factory It is ready for use with out further assembly or adjustment THREE POSITION HANDLE Storage operating and low for reaching under low furniture The handle can be lowered by stepping on the pedal at left rear of cleaner 2 The handle should always be in storage position when cleaning tools are used The Hoover Company 1969 1 For greater convenience and ease of operation this Deluxe cleaner provides you with an ex clusive Automatic Power Drive feature The Automatic Power Drive Control is built into the handle of the cleaner This automatic drive propels the cleaner forward and backward at a variable rate of speed controlled entirely by you the operator Fig 1 Forward To operate the cleaner in the forward position using the A utomatic Power Drive push the handle grip forward Fig 1 Notice that the cleaner moves in a forward direction with little effort The speed at which the cleaner moves is controlled entirely by you the operator Reverse To operate

OUR NEW HOOVER POWER DRIVE CLEANER Your new Hoover Power Drive is the most powerful upright cleaner ever built To handle the wide range of pile depth of modern carpets and rugs two 2 adjustment features have been provided These features are Automatic Rug Adjustment and Suction Adjustment as explained in the following paragraphs When used properly they will assure the best cleaning efficiency and ease of operation Automatic Rug Adjustment The nozzle of your cleaner is designed to float on top of the carpet and thereby adjust automatically to the correct carpet height for all known carpets No manual nozzle adjustment is ever necessary Suction Adjustment For Carpets and Rugs Set the dial on the back of the cleaner to MEDIUM Fig 1 This will be the correct setting for the majority of rugs On very thin or loosely woven carpeting it may be necessary to move the dial toward the LOW position For indoor outdoor sculptured or multi level rugs it may be necessary to move the dial toward HIGH for most effective cleaning NOTE Be certain dial indicator points to desired suction not to the neutral area between carpet and tool suction Operate cleaner on dry carpet only Suction Adjustment For Cleaning Tools Fig 2 The handle of the cleaner must be in storage position See Page 2 when cleaning tools are used When the handle is in this position the nozzle is raised automatically and the agitator does not come i
4. bstructed which may happen if the bag is overfilled remove it and clear it Pull the hose end from the bottom of the bag housing and unscrew hose end by turning in a clockwise direction Turn cleaner over remove bottom plate Fig 1 Page 8 and pull hose from cleaner Clean hose and reinsert it in the cleaner NOTE ALWAYS DISCONNECT CORD FROM ELECTRICAL OUTLET BEFORE REPLACING PARTS THE THROW AWAY BAG It is imperative that you use only genuine Hoover Throw A way Bags made by The Hoover Company Genuine Hoover Bags can be identified by the Hoover Medallion These bags are made from a special material which is scientifically formulated to filter out dust while allowing air to flow through freely Where To Buy Bags From your local Authorized Hoover Dealer or from Hoover Factory Service Stations listed on the white insert WHEN ORDER ING THE THROW AWAY BAGS BE SURE TO MENTION THE MODEL OF YOUR CLEANER To Replace Throw Away Bags Tip cleaner over resting handle on the floor Open the bag cover of the cleaner by turning latch in either direction Lift bag cover Hold throw away bag by card board collar twist outward and remove Discard used bag To attach new throw away bag hold bag with cardboard collar down and with arrows pointing toward front of cleaner Push hole in cardboard firmly over tube twisting until bag is secure Be sure that throw away bag is not extending outside of cover and that cover is in proper p

6. n contact with the rug The Automatic Power Drive is disengaged and the cleaner will not self ATTACH propel HOSE HERE Attach hose and cleaning tools Page 5 Set Suction Control Dial to HIGH under TOOL Suction for most cleaning For cleaning drap eries and delicate fabrics move dial toward LOW The dial can be placed at HIGH MEDIUM LOW or any space between these markings THE CLEANING TOOLS See Page 4 for setting Suction Control Dial when using tools l TUFFLEX HOSE Double vinyl reinforced with nylon mesh for long trouble free life The light flexible hose has a vinyl tab so it can be hung on the cleaner or on a hook in a closet 2 TELESCOPING WAND When you require extra length for cleaning bare floors or hard to reach places attach the telescoping extension wand To lengthen the wand press down on the plastic latch and extend wand until it locks in place To shorten use opposite procedure Fig 2 3 FLOOR BRUSH For hard surface floors and carpeted stairs 4 UPHOLSTERY NOZZLE For upholstered furniture draperies tapestries mattresses clothing automobile interiors stairs 5 DUSTING BRUSH For carved furniture table tops books lamps light fixtures Venetian blinds registers baseboards 6 CREVICE TOOL For upholstered furni ture edges of wall to wall carpeting radiators dresser drawers To Connect Hose To Cleaner Insert hose con nector in opening below dial Turn hose c
7. onnector to either direction until it locks in place Fig 3 To Connect Tools To either the telescoping wand or hose push the attachment into place making sure the button on the attachment is locked in place To release press down on plastic spring latch and remove Fig 4 To Store Tools The vinyl tool kit has been designed so the tools can be packed inside and the hose attached by strap on outside The kit has two slots located near the top for ease in hanging on the cover latch of the cleaner or on a hook in the closet Fig 5 While moving furniture the hose can be conven iently hung on the handle Fig 6 To Clean Tools To clean the hose wipe off dirt with a cloth dampened with a liquid detergent Use a damp cloth to remove the detergent Clean ing tools can be washed in warm water with a detergent Rinse and let dry before using HELPFUL HINTS Don t Pick Up Tacks Your cleaner is powerful It can pick up tacks pins paper clips etc How ever hard sharp objects should not be picked up by the cleaner They may clog or damage the hose and the throw away bag Take Care of The Cord Wind it loosely on the cover latch and knob on Suction Control Dial to avoid strain Snap clip on plug onto cord To remove cord turn cover latch See inset Don t run cleaner over the cord it may damage the insulation The Bag Indicator CHECK located on the front of the cleaner makes it convenient f
8. or you to know when the disposable bag should be changed The indicator will normally disappear when the motor is turned on and the Dial A Matic is used for cleaning carpets If the CHECK indicator appears when the cleaner is being used on carpets the cleaner is not operating satisfactorily You should 1 Replace bag Fig 3 Page 7 In some cases the bag may not be filled to capacity but due to variation in size and type of dirt particles the bag has ceased to filter satisfactorily 2 Check secondary filter Fig 3 3 Check nozzle hose Fig 1 Page 7 NOTE The CHECK BAG indicator may be visible when cleaning tools are used This does not necessarily mean that the cleaner is not operating satisfactorily This can be checked by temporarily turning the dial to CARPET SUCTION position and checking the indicator If it disappears the bag does not need to be replaced The Secondary Filter protects the motor from dirt Before installing a new bag check filter Dirt spilled in the bag housing will accumulate on the filter and may restrict motor performance To clean filter remove wire holder and lift out filter Tap against the opening for receiving the cleaning tools with the suction dial set for cleaning tool use Replace in bag housing and secure with holder GASKET The Nozzle Hose on the cleaner carries the dirt from the nozzle to the throw away bag If the hose becomes o
9. osition on the gasket before latching THE BELTS There are two belts on your Hoover cleaner The belts control the speed of the agitator and the power drive pulley and are important for the efficient operation of your cleaner Because of this when buying new belts you should always insist on genuine Hoover belts Some other belts on the market not manufactured under the Hoover design and quality controls do not operate the agitator or Power Drive correctly and may damage your Hoover cleaner When To Replace Belts Check from time to time to be sure the belts are in good condition If they are stretched or cut they should be replaced To Replace Belts 1 Remove cord from electrical outlet 2 Turn cleaner over remove metal plate on bottom of cleaner by pushing latches toward the outside of cleaner Fig 1 Lift plate to POWER DAIVEREET AGITATOR BELT release it from clips 3 There are two belts as shown in Figure 2 The larger belt is connected to the agitator To remove the large belt push latches that hold agitator in and toward center of cleaner until they are free Fig 3 Lift out agitator and remove old belt 4 The smaller belt is attached to the power drive pulley Fig 2 To replace the smaller belt it is necessary to first remove the larger belt NOTE It may not be necessary to change both belts at one time 5 Place new smaller belt over power drive pulley and motor pulley with
10. smooth side of belt next to pulleys Fig 2 Next place new larger belt over motor pulley then over agitator 6 Replace agitator and latch it in position 7 Make sure that large belt is in center of pulley and free of agitator mountings and latch Turn agitator by hand to be sure that belt is in proper position in motor pulley groove 8 Replace bottom plate Fig 5 Make sure that clips enter into the recesses on the cleaner bottom plate Check to see that latches are pushed back and will not be covered by plate Fig 6 Place plate position and latch AGITATOR MOUNTING securely Turn agitator by hand to be sure that belt is in proper position on pulley THE BRUSHES When brushes worn and bristles do not touch the edge of a card held across the nozzle they should be replaced Always replace both brushes at the same time to maintain cleaning efficiency To Replace Brushes Remove bottom plate belt and agitator following directions given on Page 8 1 Turn end plates of agitator in opposite direc tions until one plate comes off 2 Then pry out end section as shown in illustration 3 After end section is removed tap the shaft gently with a hammer 4 Pull other plate and shaft from agitator 5 Remove brushes by pulling them from agitator with pliers Slide new brushes into the channels small ends first pushing them in as far as possible 6 Replace end plate and shaft
11. the cleaner in the reverse position using the Automatic Power Drive gently pull the handle grip and guide the cleaner toward you The cleaner moves both forward and back ward with the same ease when using the Automatic Power Drive feature NOTE For best results guide the cleaner gently at first until you have adjusted to the ease of operating the cleaner The Power Drive feature is in operation only when the motor is turned on To move the cleaner without operating the motor use the transport button disengage drive accord ing to the following instructions TO TRANSPORT Your Hoover Power Drive Cleaner can be transporte by two 2 methods 1 Use the convenient carrying handle for carrying your cleaner up and down stairs or when lifting the cleaner from one surface to another Lift it as shown in Fig 2 2 To roll your cleaner from one room to another use the convenient button located on top of the handle grip Fig 3 Press the button and slide the handle grip up or down the handle until the button drops flush with the handle grip With the button depressed the cleaner is in the trans port or neutral position with the drive mechanisr disengaged While holding the button depressed the cleaner may be pushed to the desired location as shown in Fig 4 When the button is pressed in the Automatic Power Drive gears are locked into neutral position and the cleaner can easily be transported THIS IS THE OF Y
