2. 4 Use the Allen wrench to reinstall and tighten the two screws NOTE All hardware is metric The use of standard wrenches will strip hardware Allen screws may be painted and sealed You may need to apply force to remove these screws Tools are not included 12 Companion Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 OPERATION Armrest Width Adjustment To adjust the armrest width 1 Loosen the adjustment knobs at the rear of the seat See figure 6 2 Slide the armrests in or out to the desired width Tighten the adjustment knobs Seat Height Adjustment To adjust the seat height 1 Remove the seat by lifting it straight up 2 Set the seat aside 3 Remove the bolt nut and washer that hold the seat post in the seat pedestal See figure 7 4 Position the seat post at the desired height while aligning the holes in the seat post and the seat pedestal 5 Reinstall and tighten the nut bolt and washer The bolt must be installed from the back of the pedestal with the nut and washer to the front of the scooter Seat Rotation Lever The seat can be rotated through 360 and locked at any 45 position 1 Pull up on the seat rotatation lever and rotate the seat to the desired position See figure 8 2 Release the handle to lock the seat at any 45 position Flip up Armrests Pull up on the end of either armrest to flip it up for easy transfer on and off your Golden Compa
3. 6 Inflate the tire to the proper pressure e Rear pneumatic tires should not exceed 50 psi pounds per square inch This is a maximum tire pressure Tires should never be inflated beyond that pressure e The front tire on the Companion II requires 50 psi e The front tire on the Companion I is a solid tire It does not require air WN NOTE Under inflated tires will cause significant loss of operational range and will also cause the motor control board to overheat Companion 31 Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 CARE AND MAINTENANCE IF YOUR COMPANION DOES NOT OPERATE e Make certain that the brake handle is set to the engaged position See section VIII figure 32 page 23 Assembly Check the main circuit breaker If necessary reset the circuit breaker Make certain that the speed adjustment dial is at the desired setting Make certain that the key switch is set to the On position If none of the above procedures solve the problem contact your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer LUBRICATION All of the bearings on your Golden Companion are permanently lubricated and sealed e No lubrication is required LIGHTING SYSTEM Golden Companion scooters are equipped with a headlight and two taillights These lights are intended to enhance user safety Taillight Replacement 1 Remove the seat See section VII Disassembly 2 Disconnect the taillight connector See se

5. model weight capacity An overload can also occur if your Companion s tires are under inflated Underinflated tires cause the motor to draw large amounts of current This high draw overheats the motor control board Your scooter will not operate until the motor control board cools back to its opera tional temperature range Remedy Turn off your Companion s key switch and allow the motor control board to cool to its operational range e Check the tire pressure See section XI Care and maintenance e Have your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer perform a battery load test 5 Flashes Indicates a brake problem e The brake handle may be in the disengaged position See section VIII Assembly e The brake or the brake wiring may be damaged e For safety reason your scooter was designed to cease operation until the problem is corrected Remedy e Make certain that the brake handle is in the engaged position See section VIII Assembly e Turn the key switch to the Off position to stop the flash code Set brake to the up engaged position e Turn the key back to the On position e If the above remedies do not solve the problem contact your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer 28 Companion Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 DLAGNOSTICS 6 Flashes e Indicates that the thumb levers see section V Operation were not in the neutral posit
6. 3 Make certain to maintain sufficient clearance when turning your scooter so that the rear wheels will clear any obstacle NOTE Turning your scooter too sharply at too high a speed may create a situa tion where one of the rear wheels will leave the ground and the possibility of tipping the scooter Avoid this danger at all times by decelerating and steering a wide arc around corners and obstacles Steering in a Tight Spot If you must steer in a tight spot such as entering a doorway or when turning around 1 Bring your Companion to a full stop 2 Set speed at a low level 3 Turn the tiller to the direction in which you wish to drive 4 Press gently on the appropriate thumb lever This will make your Companion turn very sharply For more information on dealing with obstacle and tight spots see Control Through Tight Spots on this page Steering in Reverse Backing up your Companion requires attention to what you are doing 1 Use your left thumb to press against the left thumb lever See figure 4 2 Turn the tiller to the left to drive in reverse to the left 3 Turn the tiller to the right to drive in reverse to the right NOTE Your Companion s speed in reverse is fifty percent of the maximum speed set at the speed control dial CONTROL THROUGH TIGHT SPOTS As you use your Golden Companion to greatly increase your mobility you will un doubtedly encounter some obstacles that will require practice to negotiate smoo

See figure 45 WARNING Do not attempt electrical AN repairs Consult Golden Technologies Inc or your authorized Golden Tech nologies Inc dealer If for no apparent reason your Com panion stops operating the main circuit breaker may have tripped FIGURE 45 MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER RESET Possible causes for the main circuit breaker to trip e Low tire pressure can cause the motor to overload and trip the main circuit breaker see Wheels and Tires in this section of this manual and see section X Diagnos tics e Run down batteries As you operate your Companion battery voltages go down and battery current must rise to satisfy the demands of the motor and of other electrical devices operating on your scooter This can cause a heavy current draw that will trip the main circuit breaker Remedy e Recharge your Companion s batteries See Charger and Batteries in this section of this manual e Ifthe problem continues have your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer load test the batteries e If the batteries are good the charger may be the problem Consult your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer Resetting the Main Circuit Breaker If the main circuit breaker trips as a result of run down batteries or because of a tem porary overload reset the circuit breaker 1 Wait a minute or so for the motor control board to return to the normal operating temperature range 2 Make cer
9. band radios CBs amateur radios ham radios wireless computer links microwave transmitters paging transmitters etc These electromagnetic EM waves are invisible and increase in strength the closer one gets to the source of transmission When these energy waves act upon electrical devices and cause them to malfunction or to function in an erratic or uncontrolled manner they are referred to as Electromagnetic Interference EMI or Radio Frequency Interference RFI EMI RFI AND YOUR COMPANION All electrically powered vehicles including scooters are susceptible to Electromagnetic Interference Radio Frequency Interference EMI RFI This interference could result in abnormal unintended movement of your Golden Companion WARNING Unintended movement or brake release could cause an accident or AN injury The FDA has determined that each make and model of scooter can resist EMI RFI to a certain level The higher the level of resistance the greater the degree of protection from EMI RFI measured in volts per meter V m The FDA has also determined that cur rent technology is capable of providing 20 V m of resistance to EMI RFI which would provide useful protection against common sources of interference The resistance level of the Golden Companion to EMI RFI is not known EMI RFI RECOMMENDATIONS e Do not turn on or use hand held personal electronic communication devices such as cellular phones walkie talkies and CB radios while your
10. output falls to or below 17 5 VDC Tiller Adjustment Lever The Tiller on your Companion scooter employs a pneumatic piston to provide you with infinite tiller angle settings for your driving comfort e Use one hand to grasp a handgrip e Use your other hand to push down and hold the tiller adjustment lever see figure 4 e Position the tiller at a comfortable and safe operating angle e Release the tiller adjustment lever It will automatically lock the tiller at the selected angle CONTROL OPTIONS Golden Technologies Inc has made provision for the individual needs and abilities of the operators of the Golden Companion Your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer can reverse the thumb lever controls so that when you push on the left lever your scooter will move in the forward direction and pushing on the right lever will move your scooter in reverse The Companion line can be equipped with a 110 amp controller Normally the control ler is rated at 70 amps SEATING CONTROLS Armrest Height Adjustment The armrest height can be adjusted three quarters of an inch or one and one half inches to comfortably fit the operator 1 Use a 5 mm metric Allen wrench to remove the two screws and washers that hold the armrest in place See figure 5 2 Raise or lower the armrest to the desired height while aligning the holes in the arm rest and the armrest L bracket 3 Position a washer on each screw removed in step 1

N YOUR COMPANION Check to be certain that the power is turned off See section V Operation in this manual This will eliminate the possibility of accidentally activating the paddle con trols and causing injury to yourself or to others e Check to be certain that your Companion s brake handle is in the engaged position See section VII Disassembly in this manual e Flip up the armrests WARNING When getting on or off your Companion do not put most or all of your A weight on the edge of the deck Doing so may cause the scooter to become unstable GETTING ON YOUR COMPANION e Position the seat for safe and easy mounting See section V Operation e Return tiller to full upright position Carefully place one foot on the approximate center of the deck and seat yourself comfortably and securely on the seat e Fasten the lap belt if your scooter is so equipped e Flip down or replace the armrests GETTING OFF YOUR COMPANION e Make certain that the power is turned off and the key is removed Return tiller to full upright position Flip up or remove the armrests Unfasten the lap belt if your scooter is so equipped Carefully place one foot on the ground transfer your weight to that leg and slowly come to a standing position Step away from the scooter MAXIMUM WEIGHT Your Companion has been rated to a maximum payload operator and anything else being carried on the Companion of 300 pounds for the Com

17. cked in the fully forward direction 7 Fasten your lap belt if your Companion is so equipped BASIC DRIVING 1 Make certain that you are seated safely and properly on your Golden Companion 2 Turn the speed control dial fully counterclockwise to its slowest setting NOTE Reverse movement of the scooter may not occur when the speed control dial is set fully counterclockwise at its slowest setting 3 Insert the key into the key switch if you have not already done so 4 Turn the key clockwise to the On position See figure 10 5 Place your hands on the handgrips e If you wish to drive forward position your right thumb on the right thumb lever See figure 4 e If you wish to drive in reverse position your left thumb on the left thumb lever See figure 4 Press against the thumb lever to gently accelerate your Companion Release the lever to allow your Companion to come gently to a full stop Practice these two basic functions until you feel that you have control of your scoot er COON O 14 Companion Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 RIDING YOUR COMPANION Steering Steering your Golden Companion is easy and logical 1 With both hands on the handgrips of the tiller see figure 3 turn the tiller to the right to travel to the right 2 With both hands on the handgrips of the tiller see figure 3 turn the tiller to the left to travel to the left

19. ction VII Disassembly 3 Remove the rear shroud See section VII Disassembly 4 Turn the shroud upside down 5 Twist the gray rubber part of the light assembly counter es Cee HOLE TWIST THIS 6 Pull the assembly out of the mounting hole PART 7 Pull the old bulb do not twist straight out of the assembly 8 Push do not twist a new bulb into the assembly LIGHT BULB REPLACEMENT 9 Insert the assembly into the mounting hole 10 Twist the assembly clockwise to lock it in place 11 Replace the shroud See section VIII Assembly 12 Connect the taillight connector See VIII Assembly 13 Replace the seat See section VIII Assembly Headlight Replacement To replace the headlight bulb the tiller shroud will need to be removed Consult your authorized Golden Technologies Inc dealer with regard to this bulb replacement 32 Companion Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 CARE AND MAINTENANCE CHARGER AND BATTERIES To Charge the Batteries 1 5 Make certain that the key switch is in the Off position See figure 9 on page 14 2 Lift the trunk lid See figure 3 on page 8 3 4 Plug the charger AC cord into a working electri Uncoil the charger AC cord cal outlet Two amber LEDs Light Emitting Diode will illuminate See figure 47 6 When the charging cycle is complete a green LED 7 8 will illuminate indicating a complete c
20. d e To stop your Companion release all pressure on the lever The lever will automati cally return to the center neutral position and your scooter will come to a gradual stop The brake will automatically engage NOTE Always bring your Companion to a full stop before changing direction from forward to reverse or from reverse to forward To drive in reverse e Place your hands on the handgrips e Use your thumbs to operate the lever controls e Use your left thumb to press lightly on the R reverse motion lever to move your scooter in reverse A back up beeper will sound to inform others of your movement e Increase the pressure applied by your thumb to increase your reverse speed e To stop your Companion release all pressure on the lever The lever will automatically return to the center neutral position and your scooter will come to a gradual stop DC Voltage Meter This meter see figure 4 shows the amount of voltage in your Companion s batteries Companion 11 Companion Owner s Manual GC222 GC223 GC322 GC323 GC325 GC421 OPERATION e Green indicates a full charge on the batteries e Yellow indicates caution and approximately a one half charge of the batteries e Red indicates that the batteries have less than one half of a charge remaining See section XI Care and Maintenance for instruction concerning charging the batter ies NOTE Your scooter will automatically turn itself off if the battery
