1. caution To prevent damage to the machine from static electricity DO NOT touch the electrodes shown in the illustration Oo Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back into the machine O Close the front cover QO Plug the machine s power cord back into the AC power outlet first and then plug in the telephone line cord Turn on the machine s power switch 125 Cleaning the corona wire We recommend that you put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly on a piece of disposable paper or cloth in case you accidentally spill or scatter toner L1 Open the front cover and take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly o Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times 126 Q Return the blue tab and snap it into the home position caution If you do not return the blue tab to the home position W your printed pages may have vertical black stripes on them o Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the machine o Close the front cover Cleaning the drum unit e Take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly and then take out the toner cartridge from the drum unit Q Put the print sample in front of the drum unit and find the exact position of the poor print e Tur

8. e Place your documents face up top edge first in the ADF until you feel them touch the feed roller o Adjust the paper guides to fit the width of your documents caution To avoid damaging your machine while using the ADF do not pull on the document while it is feeding To scan non standard documents see Using the scanner glass on page 12 11 Chapter 2 Using the scanner glass You can use the scanner glass to fax scan or copy the pages of a book or single sheets of paper Documents can be up to 8 5 inches wide and up to 14 inches long 215 9 mm wide to 355 6 mm long To use the scanner glass the ADF must be empty Lift the document cover Ev ER ofaa 85 e Using the document guidelines on the left center the document face down on the scanner glass eo Close the document cover caution If the document is a book or is thick do not slam the cover or press on it 12 Acceptable paper and other media Print quality may vary according to the type of paper you are using You can use the following types of media plain paper transparencies labels or envelopes For best results follow the steps below B Use paper made for plain paper copying B Use paper that is 20 to 24 Ib 75 to 90 g m E Use labels or transparencies which are designed for use in laser printers B When using transparencies remove each sheet immediately to prevent smudging or paper
9. or your computer name if the machine is connected to a network 64 o Press A or V to select On or Off Press OK O Press Stop Exit E Note Ifyou select Backup Print On the machine will also print the fax at your machine so you will have a copy This is a safety feature in case there is a power failure before the fax is forwarded or a problem at the receiving machine The machine can store faxes up to 4 days if there is a power failure PC Fax Receive is not supported in Windows NT workstation Version 4 0 when the machine is connected on a network or in Mac OS See PC Fax receiving in the Software User s Guide on the CD ROM Changing Remote Fax Options If received faxes are left in your machine s memory when you change to another remote fax option the LCD will ask you the following message E f you press 1 faxes in the memory will be erased or printed before the setting changes If a backup copy has already been printed it will not be printed again E f you press 2 faxes in the memory will not be erased or printed and the setting will be unchanged If received faxes are left in the machine s memory when you change to PC Fax Receive from another remote fax option Fax Forward Paging or Fax Storage the LCD will ask you the following message E f you press 1 faxes in the memory will be sent to your PC before the setting changes Faxes in the memory will be sent to you

14. to restore the default setting X 66 Using your Remote Access Code Dial your fax number from a telephone or another fax machine using touch tone amp When your machine answers immediately enter your Remote Access Code 3 digits followed by X The machine signals if it has received messages B No beeps No messages received B 7 long beep Fax message received o The machine gives two short beeps to tell you to enter a command See Remote fax commands on page 68 The machine will hang up if you wait longer than 30 seconds before entering a command If you enter an invalid command the machine will beep three times o Press 9 0 to reset the machine when you have finished QO Hang up Note If your machine is set to Manual mode and you want to use the remote retrieval features you can access your machine by waiting about 2 minutes after it starts ringing and then entering the remote access code within 30 seconds Retrieving fax messages Dial your fax number from a telephone or another fax machine using touch tone Q When your machine answers immediately enter your remote access code 3 digits followed by X If you hear one long beep you have messages When you hear two short beeps use the dial pad to press 9 6 2 Wait for a long beep and then use the dial pad to enter the number of the remote fax machine where you want your fax messages sent to followed by up to 2
