The use of water will result in shortened life and reduce serviceability 4 Put the mower back on its wheels on the ground If you had put plastic under the gas cap earlier make sure to remove it now Engine Care A list of key engine maintenance jobs required for good performance by the mower is given below Follow the accompanying engine manual for a detailed list and instructions Maintain oil level as instructed in engine manual Service air cleaner every 25 hours under normal conditions Clean every few hours under extremely dusty conditions Poor engine performance and flooding usually indicates that the air cleaner should be serviced To service the air cleaner refer to the engine manual Clean spark plug and reset the gap once a season Spark plug replacement is recommended at the start of each mowing season Check engine manual for correct plug type and gap specifications Clean engine regularly with a cloth or brush Keep the top of the engine clean to permit proper air circulation Remove all grass dirt and combustible debris from muffler area 15 16 Service Blade Care WARNING When removing the cutting blade for sharpening or replacement protect your hands with a pair of heavy gloves or use a heavy rag to hold the blade Periodically inspect the blade adapter for cracks especially if you strike a foreign object Replace when necessary Follow the steps below for blade service 1 Disconn
3. hands toes and feet 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade contact or thrown object injuries Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling release the handle immediately Never pull the mower back toward you while you are walking If you must back the mower away from a wall or obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping and then follow these steps Step back from mower to fully extend your arms b Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing c Pull the mower back slowly no more than half way toward you d Repeat these steps as needed Do not operate the mower while under the influence of alcohol or drugs Do not engage the self propelled mechanism on machines so equipped while starting engine The blade control handle is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operation Doing so makes the safety device inoperative and may result in personal injury through contact with the rotating blade The blade control handle must operate easily in both directions and automatically return to the disengaged position when released Never operate the mower in wet grass Always be sure of your footing A slip and fall can cause serious personal injury If you feel you are losing yo

5. 3 6 Trim off any excess Figure 3 6 Wheels NOTE Use the hardware in Group 4 to complete the following steps 1 Place the mower on blocks up off of the ground 2 Place the larger two wheels on the rear pivot arm axles and secure with the flanged lock nuts See Fig 3 7 Figure 3 7 3 Repeat with the two smaller wheels on the front pivot arm axles See Fig 3 7 4 Remove blocks and put the mower on ground Section 3 Assembly amp Set Up 11 12 Chute Deflector NOTE Use the hardware in Group 5 to complete the following steps 1 Align the holes on the chute deflector with the corresponding holes on the deck 2 Secure with self tapping screws and bell washers from underside of the deck and up through the chute deflector See Fig 3 8 Figure 3 8 Recoil Starter NOTE Use the hardware in Group 6 to complete the following steps 1 Loosely attach the rope guide to the outside of the upper handle and thread the wing nut only a few turns See Fig 3 9 Do not tighten Figure 3 9 Section 3 AssemBiy amp Set Up 2 Depress the blade control Pull the recoil starter out of the engine 4 Slip the rope through the rope guide as shown in Fig 3 9 Tighten the wing nut to secure the rope guide Adjustments Cutting Height WARNING Always stop engine disconnect spark plug and ground against engine before performing adjustments Each wheel has a height adjustment lever
6. allow objects to be thrown For safety protection frequently check components and replace immediately with original equipment manufacturer s O E M parts only listed in this manual Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety Do not change the engine s governor setting or over speed the engine The governor controls the maximum safe operating speed of the engine Check fuel line tank cap and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks Replace if necessary Do not crank engine with spark plug removed Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels as necessary Observe proper disposal laws and regulations Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harm the environment According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission CPSC and the U S Environmental Protection Agency EPA this product has an Average Useful Life of seven 7 years or 140 hours of operation At the end of the Average Useful Life have the machine inspected annually by an authorized service dealer to ensure that all mechanical and safety systems are working properly and not worn excessively Failure to do so can result in accidents injuries or death Do not modify engine To avoid serious injury or death do not modify engine in any way Tampering with the governor setting can lead to a runaway engine and cause it to operate at unsafe speeds Never tamper with f
7. star knobs Blade Control NOTE If the blade control is secured and in place on the upper handle you may skip the following three steps If however the blade control became displaced either during shipping or during assembly reattach it as follows 1 Insert the curved end of the blade control into the center hole located on the right side of the upper handle See Fig 3 4 2 Gently squeeze the blade control inward and insert the straight end into the lower hole located on the left side of the upper handle See Fig 3 4 Curved Figure 3 4 3 Check to confirm that the blade control pivots freely against the upper handle NOTE The control cable is attached to the engine from the factory You will need to attach the free end of the cable to the upper handle Control Cable 1 Unwrap the cable from the engine and route the cable under the lower handle Press the snap fitting into the hole on the upper handle as shown in Fig 3 5 Figure 3 5 2 Hook the Z end of the blade control cable into the blade control from the outside to the inside See Fig 3 5 Securing the Cable NOTE Use the hardware in Group 3 to secure the blade control cable IMPORTANT The cable must be routed properly to avoid contact with all sharp edges and hot surfaces Such contacts damage the cable and render the controls inoperative 1 Secure the cable to the lower left handle near the base of the unit with a cable tie See Fig

9. to change the cutting height of the mower 1 Depress the lever towards the wheel 2 Slide the lever assembly to desired position to change the cutting height See Fig 3 10 Figure 3 10 3 Release lever towards deck IMPORTANT All wheels must be placed in the same position For rough or uneven lawns move the wheels to a higher position to prevent scalping of grass Set Up Gas and Oil Fill Up Refer to the separate engine owner s manual for additional engine information 1 Add oil provided before starting unit for the first time out of the box 2 Service the engine with gasoline as instructed in the separate engine owner s manual WARNING Use extreme care when handling gasoline Gasoline is extremely flammable and the vapors are explosive Never fuel the machine indoors or while the engine is hot or running Extinguish cigarettes cigars pipes and any other sources of ignition Controls and Features de Recoil Starter NS Cutting Height Adjustment Lever One at each wheel Figure 4 1 Blade Control The blade control is attached to the upper handle of the mower Depress and squeeze it against the upper handle to operate the unit Release it to stop engine and blade WARNING This blade control is a safety device Never attempt to bypass its operations Cutting Height Adjustment Lever One adjustment lever is located on each wheel and is used to adjust the cutting height AII four lever
10. type of maintenance on your machine Lubrication 1 Lubricate pivot points on the blade control at least once a season with light oil This control must operate freely in both directions See Fig 6 1 2 Lubricate the wheels at least once a season with light oil or motor oil If wheels are removed for any reason lubricate surface of the pivot arm and inner surface of the wheel with light oil See Fig 6 1 3 Lubricate the torsion springs and pivot points on the side discharge chute periodically with light oil to prevent rust See Fig 6 1 Figure 6 1 4 Follow the accompanying engine manual for lubrication schedule and instruction for engine lubrication Deck Care Clean underside of the mower deck after each use to prevent build up of grass clippings or other debris Follow steps below for this job 1 Disconnect spark plug wire Drain gasoline from lawn mower or place a piece of plastic under the gas cap 2 Tip mower so that it rests on the housing Keep the side with the air cleaner facing up Hold mower firmly WARNING Never tip the mower more than 90 in any direction and do not leave the mower tipped for any length of time Oil can drain into the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem 3 Scrape and clean the underside of the deck with a suitable tool Do not spray with water IMPORTANT Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit These may cause damage to the engine

16. e bolt for correct torque Off Season Storage The following steps should be taken to prepare your lawn mower for storage Clean and lubricate mower thoroughly as described in the lubrication instructions Do not use a pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit Refer to Engine manual for correct engine storage instructions Coat mower s cutting blade with chassis grease to prevent rusting Store mower in a dry clean area Do not store next to corrosive materials such as fertilizer When storing any type of power equipment in a poorly ventilated or metal storage shed care should be taken to rust proof the equipment Using a light oil or silicone coat the equipment especially cables and all moving parts of your lawn mower before storage Troubleshooting Problem Cause Remedy Engine Fails to start Blade control disengaged Engage blade control 2 Spark plug boot disconnected 2 Connect wire to spark boot 3 Fuel tank empty or stale fuel 3 Filltank with clean fresh gasoline 4 Engine not primed if equipped with primer 4 Prime engine as instructed in the Operation section 5 Faulty spark plug 5 Clean adjust gap or replace 6 Blocked fuel line 6 Clean fuel line 7 Engine flooded 7 Wait a few minutes to restart but do not prime 8 Fuel valve if equipped closed 8 Open fuel valve See engine manual 9 Engine not choked if equipped wi
17. ect spark plug boot from spark plug Turn mower on its side making sure that the air filter and the carburetor are facing up 2 Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine crankshaft See Fig 7 1 Support Figure 7 1 3 Remove blade and adapter from the crankshaft See Fig 7 1 4 Remove blade from the adapter for testing balance Balance the blade on a round shaft screwdriver to check Remove metal from the heavy side until it balances evenly When sharpening the blade follow the original angle of grind Grind each cutting edge equally to keep the blade balanced WARNING An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds It may cause damage to mower and could break causing personal injury 5 Lubricate the engine crankshaft and the inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft Place the blade on the adapter such that the side of the blade marked Bottom or with part number faces the ground when the mower is in the operating position Make sure that the blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter flanges 6 Place blade bell support on the blade Align notches on the blade bell support with small holes in blade 7 Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque 450 in Ibs min 600 in Ibs max To ensure safe operation of your mower periodically check the blad
18. ever run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide an odorless and deadly gas Before cleaning repairing or inspecting make certain the blade and all moving parts have stopped Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to prevent unintended starting 10 11 12 13 14 15 Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent intervals for proper tightness Also visually inspect blade for damage e g bent cracked worn Replace blade with the original equipment manufacture s O E M blade only listed in this manual Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment specifications may lead to improper performance and compromise safety Mower blades are sharp and can cut Wrap the blade or wear gloves and use extra caution when servicing them Keep all nuts bolts and screws tight to be sure the equipment is in safe working condition Never tamper with safety devices Check their proper operation regularly After striking a foreign object stop the engine disconnect the spark plug wire and ground against the engine Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage Repair the damage before starting and operating the mower Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height adjustment while the engine is running Grass catcher components discharge cover and trail shield are subject to wear and damage which could expose moving parts or
19. has two flat ends with three holes each one small and two large The upper handle has indented ends with one hole and may have the blade control attached See Fig 3 1 Blade Control Upper Handle Figure 3 1 Lower Handle NOTE Use the hardware in Group 1 to attach the lower handle 1 Place the lower handle over the handle bracket assemblies and position each bracket stud into the top or bottom hole See Fig 3 2 Figure 3 2 Section 3 Assembly amp Set Up 2 Secure with the star knobs Each side of the lower handle must be positioned onto the stud at the same position Upper Handle NOTE Use the hardware in Group 2 to attach the upper handle 1 Place the upper handle in position over the lower handle keeping the blade control if attached facing up 2 Secure the upper handle to the lower handle using the carriage bolts and star knobs See Fig 3 3 Make sure that the carriage bolt heads go on the outside of the handle Figure 3 3 3 Ifsatisfied with the height of the handle tighten the star knobs at the ends of the lower handle shown in Fig 3 2 For convenience of operation you may adjust the handle height as follows a Remove the star knobs shown in Fig 3 2 and remove the lower handle b Position each handle bracket stud into the appropriate hole in the lower handle Each end of the lower handle must be placed in the same position on the mounting brackets Cc Reattach and tighten the
