Analog Supply Analog Supply Failure means the voltage is not within tolerance 3 5 7 Data Logging Menu The data logging menu allows you to select up to 12 parameters that will be saved to the USB stick and can be downloaded remotely Data Log Interval Set the interval that measurement data will be logged at from 1 second to 24 hours or Disabled meaning no data is logged the USB memory stick Data Log Setup Numeric Select the parameters by entering their parameter number Data Log setup Text Select the parameters by choosing them from a list of names Select the blank line to indicate the end of the list Keys These keys delete or insert a parameter in the list The list of parameters must be contiguous Thus when you delete a logging parameter any parameters below it will be moved up The key will delete the currently highlighted parameter the key will insert a new parameter at that location moving the others down The end of the list will be the first parameter that is set to number 0 or the blank line in the text setup menu or the 12 parameter Page 52 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Operation 3 5 8 Sequencing Menu Mode This field has the same function as the Mode button on the main screen Define Points Opens the point menu Define Sequence Opens the sequences menu Reset to default Resets all the points and sequences to their default values This is only useful if you w

Rewind The rewind command immediately restarts the previous point Restore The restore command restarts the current point from the beginning 3 5 Menu button This button opens the menus for the ACS Menus follow some general rules On the left hand side is a name on the right hand side is a value or a right pointing triangle that will open another menu The up and down buttons will scroll through long menus scrolling off the top will take you to the bottom of the menu and vice versa If a value can be edited it will be displayed in a bold font Some values may only editable when certain conditions are met 3 5 1 Main Menu This top level menu presents all the other menus for the ACS and one important function General Settings Menu Configures display and communication parameters Status Menu Shows the operational status of important system elements Data Logging Menu Select which parameters should be saved on the USB stick Sequence Menu Define points and sequences Hardware Menu Enter the set points for RH or flow control ACS Calibration Menu Enter the calibration values for ACS readings Safely Remove USB Stick This feature must be activated before removing the USB memory to safely remove the USB stick Failure to do this may cause corruption to the data on the memory stick 3 5 2 General Settings Menu Date Sets and displays the current date Time Sets and displays the current time

Supply Measured voltage 56 5V Supply Measured voltage 57 Negative analog supply Measured voltage 58 Positive analog supply Measured voltage Page 62 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Communications 6 Appendix B ModBus Protocol The ACS supports a limited Modbus implementation The only function codes supported are 3 Read holding register and 16 Write multiple registers The ACS expects 8 data bits 1 stop bit and no parity The baud rate is specified by the Serial Communications menu Read Holding Register You must specify a slave address for Serial requests but not for TCP requests This value is the ACS s Multidrop ID Read requests specify which Advanced Protocol IEEE value they want to read as the starting reference indexed from 0 Refer the appendix on the Advanced Protocol to see what values are available and what index to specify for them You may read from 2 to 124 registers Note that you must read an even number of registers because the return data is always 4 bytes a float The value will be returned as a big endian 32 bit IEEE floating point value Write Multiple Registers You must specify a slave address for Serial requests but not for TCP requests This value is the ACS s Multidrop ID The start reference is the same as for reading Only 2 registers may be written at a time that is a single IEEE value Page 63

This configuration enables the ACS 1000 to Page 20 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Introduction be connected to other common sample manifolds When an automatic calibration is performed the other instruments will not be interfered with by the calibration gas or changes in flow 1 5 4 Flow Splitter The flow splitter is isokinetically designed so that the aerosols are evenly divided into two channels from the inlet with minimal loss of particles Identical flows are required in each channel for this to occur 1 5 5 Conditioning Modules The ACS 1000 has provisions for up to Four Conditioning Modules Each module has the same physical dimensions so that they can be interchanged and re configured in the system depending on the user s requirements When the electrical connections are made the ACS 1000 will automatically identify which module is installed in which location and appropriately control that module accordingly The four specific locations where the Modules can be installed are e Top Left TL e Top Right TR e Bottom Left BL and e Bottom Right BR The type and number of modules you received entirely depends on your application Any module can be added to the system afterwards if required The following section will describe all the modules available in Ecotech Page 21 Introduction ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Humidifier Module Outer tube Cooling valve

Water level sensor Interface box Cooling fan Drain valve Water pump Water filter 4 Inner tube Temp and RH sensor Figure 2 Humidifier module As mentioned earlier the Humidifier Module works by passing sample air through the insi de of a Gore Tex membrane while the outside of the membrane is saturated with high purity water As the heater varies the temperature of the water the amount of water vapor transferred through the membrane to the sample will vary proportionally The foll Page 22 owing components compose the Humidifier Module Inner Tube 41mm ID stainless steel tube wrapped with a Gore Tex membrane Outer Tube Contains the water heaters over temperature protection water temperature sensor and upper and lower water level sensors to indicate the status of the water level in the humidifier module Water pump Draws water from the external water reserve and feeds it into the outer tube on demand The water passes through a particulate filter to keep the pump clean Drain valve Used to drain the water from humidifier outer tube when the humidifier module is being relocated stored or re configured The contents are drained into the external drain reserve Cooler In order to rapidly reduce the humidity of the humidifier module the water in the outer tube is cooled by circulating the water thr
13. a 240VAC or 110VAC type pump The size of the pump will depend on what inlet and flow options are required 1 5 10 Water Reserve There are three water reserves in the ACS Humidifier Reserve Is located in the outer tube of the humidifier and allows the water to permeate in to sample inner tube through the Gor Tex membrane Page 25 Introduction ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Charging Reserve Is located outside the ACS rack and directly feeds the Humidifier reserve via the water pump It is larger in volume so that it can be easily changed or re filled without interrupting the operation of the ACS The level sensors in the Humidifier reserve trigger the water pump to keep this reserve topped up Should the system run out of water an alarm is activated and the humidifier will shut down Drain Reserve Is also located outside the ACS rack and is used as a catchment for water overflowing or being drained from the Humidifier reserve 1 5 11 Controller Interface and Power Supply Figure 6 Controller and user interface The ACS is driven by a powerful industrial grade microcontroller which controls all facets of operation and communication The backlit interactive keypad and display allow the operator to set key parameters for operation of the ACS such as RH set points state intervals flows and other parameters used to setup a sequence The operator will also be able to read back key parameters such as tem

15. can be used with a wide range of aerosol monitoring instruments to determine the effects of humidity on aerosols The ACS is particularly useful when combined with a pair of Ecotech s Aurora nephelometers because it can directly communicate and log information from them It is also designed to be used in conjunction with many other types of aerosol instrumentation One possible configuration is for the ambient air to be drawn down through the sample inlet through a ball valve and into a Dryer module Then it can pass into the isokinetic flow splitter where the sample then passes through the Humidifier module in one channel as well as through an Extender module on the other channel This configuration gives simultaneous measurement of the Wet and Dry sample There are many other possible configurations to use and that is why the ACS 1000 is designed for flexibility of use The system is also able to automatically run a Sequence of predefined Points allowing the user to humidify the sample at a certain RH and for a certain amount of time This feature allow for the measurement of a humidogramm in a short amount of time and without surveillance SAMPLE INLET SAMPLE INLET The major components of the ACS 1000 are described below Figure 1 ACS 1000 Setup for scattering enhancement measurement HUMIDIFIER AEROSOL AEROSOL AEROSOL AEROSOL Page 19 Introduction ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Conditioning mo

ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Installation Figure 15 Module Placement e Also make sure that the electrical connectors on the module control box are facing out to the side of the rack for easy access e All the ACS modules have the thicker flange containing the Temperature and RH sensor at the bottom of the module e Insert the four fasteners and lightly tighten them until the entire ACS is assembled e Repeat the same for the module installed on the opposite side e Ensure that there are two O rings installed in the top faces module flanges e If the next module to be installed is the flow splitter then gently slide the middle shelf down so that the bottom of the flow splitter flange just touches the top of the module flange e Twist the top module flange to align it with the holes in the bottom of the flow splitter flange e Insert the four fasteners and lightly tighten them Figure 16 Inserting fasteners Page 35 Installation ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 e Now place another module above the flow splitter by following the same procedure above e Always make sure that the o rings are installed and that the shelf is adjusted correctly e Once the modules are in position firmly tighten all the fasteners on each flange 2 6 Tubing Connections The ACS 1000 relies on several pneumatic and hydraulic connections in order to function correctly The type and the number of connections required is however dependant on the type of mod

23. bient air at a consistent low relative humidity of less than 40 the other instrument can measure the same sample which has been passed through the humidifier module to accurately vary the sample s relative humidity from 40 to 90 over a user definable interval By comparing the measurements of the two instruments the hygroscopic properties of the aerosol can be determined 1 4 1 Humidification Theory The humidifier Module works by passing sample air through the inside of a Gore Tex membrane while the outside of the membrane is saturated with heated Milli Q water Heaters are used to vary the temperature of the water As the water temperature increases the amount of water vapour transferred through the Gore Tex membrane to the inside increases allowing the humidity of the sample air to be directly controlled The long length of the Humidifier Module allows time for the aerosol particle to take up water before exiting the system 1 4 2 Drying Theory The Dryer Module works by passing sample air through the inside of a permeation dryer which utilises a Nafion permeable membrane The dryer works by allowing water vapour to transfer from the inside of the Nafion membrane to the outside removing it from the sample air The purge air on the outside of the Nafion membrane must have a very low dew point and should be constantly renewed Page 18 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Introduction 1 5 Instrument description The ACS1000

26. dules Flow splitter Calibration and bypass valves 1 5 1 ACS 1000 Rack All the components to the ACS 1000 are mounted in an Aluminium extruded rack The shelves and front and side panels can be easily moved The top half of the rack can also be removed simply by lifting it up for easy transportation 1 5 2 Instrument Tray optional The Instrument tray is located at the bottom of the ACS rack and is used to house the instruments being connected to the ACS 1000 It can be detached from main ACS rack also for transportation by removing the four bolts on the underside of the ACS rack The height of the shelf in the instrument tray is also adjustable 1 5 3 Sample Inlet Assembly The Sample Inlet assembly contains a motorised ball valve sample inlet temperature and RH sensor as well as provision to connect an external ambient temperature and RH sensor The inlet can be connected to an existing sample manifold or to an external size selective inlet such as TSP PM 1 PM 2 5 or PM10 The connection to the sample inlet assembly is by means of a swage lock fitting e Motorised Ball Valve When in the normally open position this valve provides an uninterrupted path for the sample air to pass through to the ACS During bypass or calibration mode the valve is closed and the air from the sample inlet is diverted directly through to the flow control maintaining a constant flow at the sample inlet
27. e lights indicate the status of the instrument as a whole e A red light indicated that the instrument has a major failure and is not functioning e An yellow light indicates there is a minor problem with the instrument but instrument may still take measurements reliably e A green light indicates that the instrument is working and there are no problems In the case of a yellow or red light press the associated button to see a list of errors or warnings The green status button will cancel any open edit box or menu and return to the main display 3 2 Modes of Operation There are three basic states for the ACS 3 2 1 IDLE In Idle mode the ACS takes no actions although readings will still be displayed and recorded All pumps and heaters are turned off however flow operates normally Page 46 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Operation 3 2 2 MANUAL In Manual mode the ACS attempts to maintain a specified humidity Changing the set point for a module will cause heaters and or cooling fans to operate according to instrument control algorithms In addition the water levels will be maintained in all humidifier modules 3 2 3 SEQUENCE In Sequence mode the ACS changes the set points according to a predefined script It is just like running the system in Manual mode except you don t have to type in new set points every hour The main display shows the current operation of the instrument Modules stat

32. hereby leading to the effects of deliquescence crystallisation hysteresis and the existence of metastable droplets These features whose state is often represented as a function of relative humidity RH are important to the ability of the aerosol particles to scatter light and for the ability of the aerosol particles to act as cloud condensation nuclei Quantifying optical properties of aerosols and their lifetime in the atmosphere is important for determining atmospheric visibility and reducing uncertainties in estimating radiative forcing of those aerosols The ability to measure aerosols properties as a function of RH is therefore highly desirable As an example the obtained growth curves of relative scattering versus humidity can then be parameterised and fed into regional and global models that contain physically based representations of aerosols The ACS 1000 provides simultaneous and programmable control of humid and dry sample channels allowing comparison of real time measurement by two parallel instruments In addition the ACS 1000 is capable of automatically running a programmed sequence of points each defining the RH sample and the running time This feature allows the user to obtain a fully automated measure of the aerosol properties as a function of RH The ACS 1000 can be used with a wide range of aerosol monitoring instruments to determine the effects of humidity on aerosols For instance while one instrument measures the am

55. ules installed The following section will describe all the various connections available and explain under which conditions they should be used Note that there are no tubing connections for the Extender module 2 6 1 Humidifier Module The ACS 1000 Humidifier Module requires a water supply in order to humidify the sample The water reserve must be filled up with Milli Q water prior to using the system All the tubing connections to the Humidifier Module are hydraulic or for the transport of a liquids such as water These connections are predominately made of clear tubing There are four connections to be made DRAIN A DRAIN B DRAIN C all connect to the drain reserve The SUPPLY line connects to the charging reserve Connect the tubing from the charging reserve and the drain reserve bottles to the humidifier port mounting plate See Figure 17 Adjust the humidifier mounting plate so that all the ports sit below the height of the internal reservoir outer tube of the Humidifier module e Connect the tubing from the Humidifier module to the internal side of the humidifier port mounting plate See Figure 17 e Before filling the charging reserve bottle rinse it 3 times with Milli Q water This minimises the possibility of the humidifier becoming contaminated hence reducing its efficiency Page 36 ACS 1000 User Manual 1 0 Installation Figure 17 Humidifier port mounting plate AIR VALVE LI
