1. Complete Setup windows e Make sure a transmitter is present txing 1010 at the correct frequency with the correct deviation and so on As a starting point use another development board to transmit 1010 Start e Press the Start button and observe the results Note the time delay between pressing the Start button and the update of the fields Note e Inthe micro controller the BER procedure will read bytes of the input If the byte is equal to 10101010 or 01010101 then it is OK and 0 errors are detected If any other byte value is read it will be counted as error Stop e The BER procedure in the micro will stop if the Stop button is pressed or if any other command is given to the development board After pressing Start or Stop wait until Success is displayed in the Status field before continuing i e before you enter another command or restart the BER 3 10 DORF TestBench Frequency Error Estimator This feature requires FW v2 or later The Frequency Error Estimator window pops up This feature requires the use of a development board NOTE Not all development board firmware versions will support this feature Read the FFE value by pressing the Read button or by stepping XCO tune value up down Pressing the Tune button will start a process to get the best XCO tune value Press the Keep button to use the XCO tune value from this dialog

Controlword read from EEPROM Read EEP Select source of where to get the RF controlword Select the default controlword stored in FLASH program memory or the user entered controlword stored in EEPROM Refer to the User Manual for the board Push Buttons e TX1010 o Start to transmit a 1010 pattern Transmit mode will be entered over ruling the entered control word Modulation will stop if another command is given e TX Random this feature requires FW v3 or later o Start to transmit a random Manchester coded pattern Transmit mode will be entered over ruling the entered control word Modulation will stop if another command is given e Get FW v o Get the firmware version of the program presently in the micro controller New features may be added to new versions of the firmware Make sure your firmware version supports the features you want to use in RF TestBench if a feature requires a special FW version It is described with the feature in this manual e Reset uC Status Micrel Norway AS 13 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 o Restart micro controller Reset EEP o Fill EEPROM with default settings of the control word Read EEP o Read the presently stored EEPROM control word Use FLASH o Instruct the development board to use the control word stored in FLASH program memory of the micro controller This is identical to the Default settings Use EFP o Instruct th

W v07 1 Introduction This document MICRFXXX User Manual for RF TestBench describes how to set up and use RF TestBench For details on the MICRF505 MICRF506 transceiver or the MICRF505 MICRF506 development system Please refer to the appropriate data sheet For the latest updates visit www micrel com RF TestBench v 07 can be used with the following development systems MICRF505 MICRF506 MICRF600 MICRF610 MICRF620 The RF TestBench should be self explaining Use this document as a reference it is not necessary to read it through before starting to use RF TestBench Note however that some features require a special FW version firmware micro controller program You can use the Get FW version command to get the present FW version of your board refer to text below If you do not have the latest or wanted version please go to www micrel com for a free download Also note Any calculated value in this program should be considered a suggestion When transferred to a specific application always test the RF performance Important New features are continuously added to RF TestBench If a feature requires a special FW version micro controller program That FW version is explicit mentioned Outline of this document Following this introduction a Setup chapter is given Then the different menu items and dialog boxes are described MICRFXXX is a short term for MICRF505 MICRF506 MICRF600 MICRF610 MICRF620 F

14. in the Quick and Complete dialogs Please refer to the MICRF50x manual for details on the FEE Before using this feature e Please read the MICRF50x user manual e Set the development board in rx on the wanted frequency and bit rate Use Quick Complete dialog press Transfer e Apply a tx signal use another development board or a signal generator Micrel Norway AS 15 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 Micrel Norway AS 16 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 3 11 FCalculate A N M This is an aid for determining frequency dividers You can use gt RF TestBench gt Quick Setup as well to find 1 frequency frequency set Note that the tolerances in the Quick Setup dialog are fixed while they are adjustable here This may give slightly different results Experiment with tolerances etc to get the frequency set you want Frequencies are calculated based on the following priorities 1 As close to the RF frequency as possible 2 As close to the comparison frequency as possible 3 Ifa RF frequency is not a 100 hit it must improve the best RF frequency found with gt IKHz or else the one with the highest comparison frequency is used 3 12 gt Calculate A N M gt Find 1 n frequencies using modulator The Calculate frequency dividers A N M Use modulator window pops up 1 or a number of frequencies max 64 can be calculated Fill in wanted frequencies etc and press the Calculate Dividers

16. k If a RF chip is selected the selected part will be displayed Micrel Norway AS RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 3 3 gt Setup Communication port The Select COM port dialog box window appears Push Buttons e Select COM 1 o Press this button if you want to use serial port COM 1 If not possible to open some other program may be using it you will get a message If the port is successfully opened the window is automatically closed e Select COM2 o Press this button if you want to use serial port COM 2 If not possible to open some other program may be using it you will get a message If the port is successfully opened the window is automatically closed e Close COM port o Press this button if you want to close the presently selected serial port but still run the program This is useful if you need to use the COM port in another program Example This can be useful if you are switching between the HyperTerminal program and RF TestBench The window is automatically closed e Return o Press this button to close the window without opening or closing a port Micrel Norway AS 6 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 3 4 RF TestBench This is where you can construct change a control word for MICRFXXX And you can give commands to the development board here Suggestion Use the Quick Setup window if you need help to calculate the control word to enter into the RF part Then from the Complete Setup wind
17. ow you can fine tune the parameters Note If you have both the Quick and Complete windows open Changes in one of the windows will be reflected in the other Example If both windows are open and you change the A N or M dividers in the Complete Setup then the Wanted parameters in Quick Setup will be changed as well 3 5 RF TestBench Overview The RF TestBench Overview window pops up this window was opened when you started RF TestBench Output fields e Address hex o The address of a byte in the MICRF50x control word The Address range is from 0x00 to 0x15 a total of 22 bytes all the editable locations in the RF chip e Address dec o The address of a byte in the MICRF50x control word The Address range is from 0 to 21 a total of 22 bytes all the editable locations in the RF chip e Value hex o The value of the byte with address 0 address 1 etc is shown as a hex number e Changed from hex o If after calculations in Quick Complete the content is changed the previous value will be shown here Micrel Norway AS 7 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 3 6 RF TestBench Quick Setup The RF TestBench Quick Setup window pops up Ml RF TestBench Quick Setup MICRF505 MICRF600 MICRF610 elie Input fields e Wanted RF Frequency o Enter the RF center frequency in MHz This will be the frequency used in receive mode e Wanted Bit rate o Enter the
18. source and read out the number of bits read the number of bits in error and the resulting bit error rate a 1010 bit pattern not a random bit pattern is applied However this test still gives an indication of the bit error level This feature requires FW v4 or later Frequency Error Estimator FEE Read out the FEE for different XCO tune values or find the best XCO tune value automatically this feature requires FW v2 or later Calculate the A N M frequency dividers Find 1 64 frequencies or set of frequencies Loop filter Find values of external components for the loop filter Deviation help Get suggestions for minimum deviation and filter settings based on RF frequency xtal tolerance etc Micrel Norway AS 3 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 2 Install RF TestBench The installation of RF TestBench is straightforward e Copy the included files into a separate directory If any file has an eee extension then please rename the file to have an exe extension In previous versions of RF TestBench a bat file was included This has been removed in version 07 e To start the program Double click the PCxx exe file xx software version number e When the program starts a welcome message is displayed Please read it You can select to close the welcome message by pressing the OK button or you can select to keep the window open e In addition a window called Overview is opened when th
19. st a menu item from the main menu is described Then the sub items of that main menu item are described and so on 3 1 2 Setup This is where the MICRF505 or MICRF506 chip or the MICRF6XX RF module is selected In addition this is where the communication port is selected relevant only if you are using a development board 3 2 D Setup gt Select MICRF505 MICRF506 MICRF600 The Select Chip dialog box window appears This is where you select the type of development system note you can use this program as a stand alone program without connecting the PC to a development board Push Buttons e MICRF505 o Press this button to select the MICRF505 Then the window is automatically closed e MICRF506 this feature requires FW v2 or later o Press this button to select the MICRF506 Then the window is automatically closed e MICRF600 this feature requires FW v3 or later o Press this button to select the MICRF600 Then the window is automatically closed e MICRF610 this feature requires FW v4 or later o Press this button to select the MICRF610 Then the window is automatically closed e MICRF620 this feature requires FW v4 or later o Press this button to select the MICRF620 Then the window is automatically closed e OK o Press this button to exit the window If you open the window the previously selected if any RF chip is displayed Output fields e Present Selection o Ifno RF chip is selected this field is blan
20. wanted on the air bit rate This is also referred to as number of signal elements second e Xtal Frequency o Enter the frequency in MHz of the xtal connected to the RF part e Wanted Deviation o Enter the single sided deviation in kHz The frequency for transmitting a 0 will be the Wanted RF Frequency Wanted Deviation and the frequency for 1 will be Wanted RF Frequency Wanted Deviation e Wanted Comparison Frequency o Enter the wanted comparison frequency in kHz here e Wanted SC Cutoff o Enter the wanted cut off frequency for the switch cap filter here Micrel Norway AS 8 RF TestBench User Guide SW v07 Tolerance When calculating the control word it may be that the Wanted values are not completely found The tolerances used in the calculations are e Wanted RF Frequency 200kHz e Wanted Bit rate No tolerance the nearest value is used e Wanted Deviation 10 e Wanted Comparison Frequency 25 e Wanted SC Cutoff No tolerance is used the lowest value gt the wanted value is used or the maximum achievable value Hint 1 Use the Complete Setup window to fine tune the parameters Hint 2 If you can accept a higher tolerance than the program uses try to change the Wanted parameters and calculate again Output Fields e Achieved RF Frequency o This will be the achieved frequency used in receive mode e Achieved Bit rate o Note that achieved bit
