5. its location in the grid but also by its color Default Font All PostScript interpreters require a Default Font This is a font that is used in cases where during interpreting a font that is called for cannot be found on the System Most often this font is either Courier or Helvetica Transverter PI uses Helvetica as the default font Embedded Font An embedded font is a font that has been placed inside a document file Typically embedded fonts are added to files by the program that originally created the file to ensure the output device will have the font available to recreate the text contained in the file If the font was not available another font would have to be used instead yielding text that is different than was originally intended Encapsulated PostScript EPS EPS is a PostScript file that is limited to one page It is encapsulated so the file or image can be placed into other documents It can also contain a PICT preview in the Resource Fork that will appear on screen Halftone Halftone converts color or graytone images into a pattern of monochrome dots More information can be found in the Graphic Resource chapter Ipi lines per inch Ipi relates to halftoning and number of colors The more Ipi the finer looking the dither but the less graytones The equation is graytones dpi lpi quantity squared plus one So for ouput at 200 dpi with 50 Ipi the number of simulated graytones is 17 Glossar

Also a corrupt Helvetica font file will also cause this error message Try reinstalling the Helvetica font into your System using the Apple System Installer CD You can do this quickly by doing a Custom Install Then from the list of items to install select Fonts and click OK This will reinstall all your System fonts Now try and run Transverter PI again Question When I try to use one of the Transverter PI modules I get a message that says Encountered an Error 43 unable to process file Answer A 43 error from the Macintosh means File not found This is most frequently due to the plug in not being able to find the RipCore engine in the TechPool folder The solution is to rebuild your Desktop Do this by saving all your currently open files and quitting all running applications Then Restart the Macintosh and hold down both the Option and Command keys until you see the message Are you sure you want to re build the desktop Click OK Defective Disk Replacement Page 32 TechPool Software will replace a defective or damaged CD free of charge during the 90 day limited warranty period After that period a damaged CD will be replaced for a 25 charge The defective CD must be returned to TechPool with a note explaining the problem TechPool Software will not be responsible for a CD lost or damaged in transit If you have not sent your registration card you MUST send it with the defective CD Please send the

10. a PS interpreter or by software such as the RipCore Level 2 PS interpreter Programs that are able to create PostScript for printing typically do not use PostScript for editing and displaying They will use their own image format which is easier to manipulate when editing then translate to PostScript when printing This translation is most commonly done by a PostScript printer driver instead of the program itself EPS Encapsulated PostScript Description Encapsulated PostScript EPS is an extension of PostScript that was created to allow applications to place a PostScript image on a page Placing is used to incorporate a smaller image into a document EPS provides the information applications need to be able to place and print an encapsulated PS file Adobe Acrobat PDF Files The PDF Portable Document Format is becoming a universally accepted file format for sharing documents on the Internet and on company Intranets It is a rich format capable of containing text fonts images and graphics that can easily be moved any where electronically Originally a superset of the Adobe Illustrator format it has grown into a widely used file format Graphic Reference Creating Encapsulated PostScript EPS Files EPS files can be made directly in many applications For instance Quark File Save Page As EPS Illustrator File Save then save in EPS format FreeHand File Export make the format EPS Many programs do not direct
11. ansverter PI is capable of doing However every application does not support all the option choices listed For example in Color Space neither Fractal Painter nor Debabilizer support CMYK Hence it will not appear on their respective Option Dialog boxes Transverter PI Options Color Space RGB 24 bit v Halftone 53 Ipi 45 vw Resolution Preview 72 v DPI 72 by 72 Raster ize 612 wide by 792 high EPS Bounds Scaling 100 00 Mirroring Antialiasing Import page D Jor 2 RIP Options Color Space You specify the color space for Transverter PI For best results we suggest you do not change the color space of the original file It is better to do color space changes in your graphics application This means if your input file is CMYK then specify CMYK as the Transverter PI Color Space Color space output choices are e Monochrome 1 bit e Grayscale 8 bit s RGB 24 bit e RGB with alpha channel 32 bit e CMYK 32 bit A nice feature for users working with vector based images when importing into Photoshop using RGB with alpha will produce and editable mask This lets you quickly work with just the image itself masking out the unnecessary image portions Halftone Halftone concerns how color and grayscale images are converted into 1 bit images simulated grayscale This is what your non color printer does when it prints con verts color or grayscale images into a pattern of black dots to simu
12. ave all your applications running select the Apple icon and choose About this Macintosh About This Macintosh amp RW System Software 7 5 5 Apple Computer Inc 1983 1995 Power Macintosh Total Memory 98 304K Largest Unused Block 46 125K Adobe Photoshop 24 025K ZZ gt gt E QuarkXPressr3 32 12 000k MEI EB SimpleText sizk H System Software 14 043K i Here you see where RAM memory is being used by Photoshop 24 028K QuarkXPress 12 000K Simple Text 512K and by the System Software 14 043K Also it shows how much free RAM remains for use in the Largest Unused Block field showing 46 125K Total RAM memory is 98 304K So for this Macintosh there is about 46 megabytes 46 125K of RAM that can be allocated to other applications As shipped the Transverter PI RipCore PostScript engine uses 6 5 megabytes 6 500K of RAM when it starts It is important to know that you will not see RAM usage for Transverter PI or RipCore in the About This Macintosh window as a separate line entry Instead RipCore s RAM usage is added onto the System Software value So under the above circumstances if RipCore were running the System Software usage would be about 20 5 megabytes 14 043K current System 6 500K for RipCore 3 To increase RipCore RAM go into the System Folder and open the TechPool folder Page 29 Troubleshooting 4 Locate and highlight the RipCore icon by clicking on it once DO NOT double click as t
13. below shows a file requesting the Avant Garde font not finding it and substituting Helvetica SST AvantGarde not found using Helvetica Transverter PI requires Helvetica as its Default Font This is the font the RipCore interpreter engine will substitute when a font is not found Helvetica must be installed in the Fonts folder inside the System folder for proper software functioning A corrupt Helvetica font file can also stop Transverter PI Commonly Asked Questions and Answers Question I receive an error message when trying to convert a larger or more complex file Error VMerror Offending Command image Flushing rest of job to end of file will be ignored Answer The Transverter PI RipCore engine PostScript Interpreter needs more memory to con vert the file probably due to placed images that require more memory to process This is one of the most common error messages you will see See Memory Issues earlier in this chapter for a solution Troubleshooting Question When I try to convert a file I get an Error message that reads UndefinedResource Offending Command FindResource Qc LK EY Helvetica Category Font Error Answer Make sure you have the font Helvetica properly installed in your System Fonts folder Transverter PI uses Helvetica as the default font If not installed Transverter PI will issue the above error message and not be able to process any files

15. e as to be a memory hog Therefore RipCore may not as it shipped ask for sufficient memory to work on every PostScript file Memory shortages disk space or RAM will cause a Status Log error message ao dp Error VMerror Offending Command image The VMerror stands for Virtual Memory Error and indicates a memory shortage prob lem The Offending Command shown above as image may vary In this case the image says that RipCore ran out of memory while trying to process some image data in your file which is usually a photograph There are two things that cause memory errors 1 too little hard drive space to process the file or 2 too little RAM allocated to RipCore Disk Space Shortage Check you have sufficient hard drive space There is not a good thumb rule for this but we suggest having at least 20 megabytes of free disk space Large PostScript files can require much more If disk space is not a problem on your hard drive move to the next step Otherwise free up some hard drive space and try processing your file again Troubleshooting RAM Shortage The second item that may cause a VMerror is the amount of RAM allocated to the RipCore PostScript engine may be insufficent To check follow these instructions 1 Make sure the application you are using Transverter PI with is running Quark Photoshop Fractal Painter Live Picture Debabilizer 2 See how much memory is available Go to the Desktop menu le
