6. banners Portal administrators place this module wherever they would like one or more banners to be displayed The module is geared toward web site administrators who wish to centrally manage ad campaigns and banner placement but enable advertisers to upload and manage their own banner images Installation and configuration This version supports DNN 4 3 and greater induding DNN 5x Itis not compatible with DNN 3x If you have version 4 0 of the banner modules for DNN 4x you can safely upgrade to this version by installing over the top don t uninstall first if you wish to keep your data intact However it is strongly recommended that you backup your database before upgrading this module or any module on a live web server If you received this module in a single zip file you must first extract the 2 zip files contained therein which contain the 2 modules The two modules are installed separately just like any other modules To install a module follow these steps note that these instructions reference DotNetNuke 4 8 4 depending on your version the details may differ slightly Also if you are planning on displaying large amounts of banners millions of impressions you may want to enable the automated record consolidation after your install see section on Event Records 1 Login as Host 2 Goto Host gt Module Definitions 3 Choose Install New Module from the drop down menu click the down arrow in the upper left

14. ask in the DNN Scheduler These options are explained in the following sections Consolidating Records As of version 6 0 the default behavior is to write event recordsin a consolidated format As such there is no need to manually consolidate records unless you either uncheck the Consolidate event records box in the BannerDisplay module or you are upgrading from a previous version and you already have a large number of records in your database To see how many records are currently in your database click the Reports link in the BannerAdvertisers module and click Manage Records There are three ways to consolidate the event records 1 Consolidate using the web interface 2 Manually execute the stored procedure using SQL Server Management Studio 3 Automate the consolidation of the previous day s records using the DNN scheduler Consolidating Records Using the Web Interface To consolidate event records using the web interface in the module follow these steps 1 In the BannerAdvertisers module click the Reports link 2 Click the Manage Records link 3 Enter the number of days and click the Consolidate Records Now link For example if you want to consolidate all the records for the previous 30 days enter 30 in the box provided If you have a great deal of records in the database or if your database is under heavy load then the consolidation operation may time out If thisis the case you will need to execute the consolidation
15. ay modules on the front page to only display banners from that group 3 Use Campaign Groups Using Campaign Groups is a great choice if you want to target banners based on campaigns rather than Advertisers Campaign Groups can also reduce administrative overhead when using Targeted Campaigns For instance suppose you want to target specific campaigns to specific sets of pages but you don t want to have to visit each page and update the BannerDisplay module configuration every time you create a new Targeted campaign The solution is to create groups and configure the BannerDisplay modules a single time From then on it is just a matter of adding new campaigns to the appropriate group 4 Use Targeted Campaigns Directly The ultimate in flexibility is achieved by creating Targeted campaigns and then selecting those campaigns where desired in the various BannerDisplay modules Even if you use groups you may decide to use this approach in select cases For example if you wanted to offer a special banner placement of a specific banner in a specific place you can assign the Targeted Campaign to the module directly rather than having to create a Campaign Group for it Groups Groups provide a convenient method to target groups of either Advertisers or individual campaigns and can reduce the administrative overhead of adding additional Advertisers and campaigns One use of groups is to create zones in your site Forinstance some sites cr

19. eate zones based on page placement a PageTop zone and a PageBottom zone Another option is to divide the site based on high traffic pages or by topical area The key advantage of groups is that once you create your groups and assign them to your BannerDisplay modules you never have to visit your display modules again This is a big deal if you have 50 pages on your site each with multiple BannerDisplay module instances Once this initial configuration is done all that is left is to add each new Advertiser or campaign to the appropriate group s 10 Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual Advertiser Groups Advertiser Groups can contain one or more Advertisers The banner pool for an Advertiser Group consists of all the Generic campaigns from each Advertiser in the group Campaign Groups Only Targeted campaigns can be added to a Campaign Group The banner pool for a Campaign Group consists of all the campaignsin the group Event Records By default when a banner is displayed or clicked on two things happen 1 The corresponding campaign statistics are updated Each campaign maintains a running total of impressions and clicks and these numbers get incremented 2 An event record is either created or updated Event records are storedin the WT BM Events table The purpose of these records is to allow for date range based reporting How event records are created in step 2 above depends on two settings on the Edit page of the BannerDisp
20. ext box or a drop down list Type or select boise Normally this step would be done by the Advertiser unless you are centrally managing all ads yourself Remember to approve the bannerif necessary 6 Go to the page where you want to display the banner ads and place a new BannerDisplay instance Configure the module as necessary so that your new banner will show up 7 Inthe BannerDisplay Edit page go to the Advanced Options section and type county without the quotes into the Custom Parameter name text box 8 Check the box that says If the custom parameters is not present or is empty then DO NOT display any banners Now when you visit the page no banners should display unless the querystring county boise appears in the URL Targeting via Session or Cookie values If the value to matchis to be pulled from the session or from a cookie check the Session or Cookie radio button from the Advanced Options section in the Edit Banners page Another option is to select the All option In this case the module will first look for a querystring If it does not find a value then it will look in the session and finally in the cookie PayPal Integration Enterprise Edition PayPal integration allows you as the administrator to set a price for a given campaign and require advertisers to submit paymentin order to approve the campaign In order to accept PayPal payments follow these steps 1

23. hing here However if you want Advertisers to select the parameter value from a drop down list then enter the values for that list here For more information refer to the section on Custom Parameters earlierin this guide PayPal Integration Settings Enterprise Edition To enable PayPal integration check the Enable PayPal integration box and enter your PayPal account email address in the box provided For more information see the PayPal Integration section in this document 27 Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual Additional Settings The Advertiser Settings page contains several additional settings represented by check boxes which can be enabled or disabled By toggling these settings you can control the following e Whether banners need to be approved e Whether individual banners can be restricted by user role Enterprise Edition e Whether campaigns can be targeted to specific portals e Whether Flash and Text banners can be included in all campaigns or are restricted to campaigns that do not rely on click through counts as their completion criteria e The default setting for sending email notifications for new or updated campaigns Refer to the embedded help text for more information on these settings BannerDisplay Settings These settings are accessed by clicking the Edit itemin the context menu of the BannerDisplay menu Size and Layout The Banner Type determines which size of banners will be displayed in this module whi

25. igns Banners placed in a Targeted campaign will never be displayed unless a BannerDisplay module is specifically configured to pull from that specific campaign Targeted campaigns can also be assigned to Campaign Groups whichin turn can be selected in BannerDisplay module instances see discussion on Campaign Groups for more details Approaches to Displaying and Targeting Banners The Ad Banner Manager offers many ways to display and target banner ads The following approaches are presented in order of increasing flexibility and complexity Of course these approaches are not mutually exclusive you can use them in any combination 1 Use Generic Campaigns The simplest approach to using the Ad Banner Manager is to use only Generic Campaigns and then place BannerDisplay module instances wherever desired with the only configuration options that differ between display modules being the banner type size and count This way Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual every banner that is added to a campaign can randomly show up anywhere that size of banner is being shown 2 Use Advertiser Groups If you want the simplidty of using Generic campaigns but you want to target banners based on Advertiser you can use Advertiser Groups For instance suppose you wanted to only display banners from certain Advertisers on the front page In this case you could create an Advertiser Group named Front Page Advertisers and configure the BannerDispl

28. lay module under Advanced Options Insert event records Setting If this box is not checked then no event records are created This means that you will not be able to view reports based on date ranges however the running totals of impressions and clicks are still stored for each campaign This option is provided for web sites for which performance is a top priority and date range based reporting is less important Consolidate event records Setting If this box is not checked a separate event record is generated for every impression or click So if agiven banner is displayed 100 times then 100 event records will be generated and stored If however the box is checked then records will be consolidated on a per day basis for each module instance For example if a given BannerDisplay instance displays a certain banner 50 times on Monday and then 50 times on Tuesday only 2 records would be generated each record would have an occurrence value of 50 to maintain the correct count Writing record in a consolidated fashion reduces the total number of records and may significantly reduce the size of your database if you have a busy site However it may slightly reduce performance Another optionis to turn off record consolidation uncheck the box and perform mass consolidations later either manually through the user interface manually using 11 Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual SQL Server Management Studio or by setting up the provided t
29. le the remaining settings in this section affect the HTML table that is generated to contain the banners The maximum number of banners displayed is determined by multiplying rows and columns For example setting rows to 2 and columns to 3 would display up to 6 banners Display Source These settings determine which campaigns to pull banners from AJAX Banner Rotation If the Display Interval is set to a value greater than 0 AJAX rotation will be enabled Note that the lower this number the more banners will be displayed Note that AJAX rotation increases the load on your site especially the database If you have a very busy site you may wish to disable rotation or set the interval to larger values The Max Rotations setting prevents large numbers of impressions from being generated ina single page view forexample if a user leaves their browser open overnight Setting this value to 0 will allow unlimited rotations If you have trouble with your page jumping during rotation you may need to set the Display Height and or Width Set these values to allow for the maximum space required for the banners that will be displayed 28 Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual DNN 4x only Because AJAX rotation relies on JavaScript there is the possibility of conflicts with other modules If you experience conflicts you may wish to try enabling the no conflict option for jQuery or preventing the module from loading jQuery altogether using the prov

32. of your banner The title will be used to identify your banner ad in the drop down list of existing banners which you will use if you want to add this banner to a new campaign in the future Due to the nature of Flash technology the module is unable to automatically detect the height and width of your ad The size of a standard banner ad is 468x60 If you do not know what the size of your banner is supposed to be you can inspect the HTML that accompanies your banner if you purchased the banner from a third party they should have provided this HTML along with the swf file Don t worry you will get an opportunity to preview the banner before adding it to your campaign If it does not look correct you can click the Back hyperlinks and come back to this step to modify the numbers Entering the URL If your Flash banner supports the industry standard clickTAG variable then enter the target URL in the box provided for instance if you want the banner to point to yoursite com then enter http www yoursite com This will allow click through counts to be recorded If your ad does not support the clickTAG variable then entering a URL will have no effect Step 3 18 Ad Banner Manager 6 0 User Manual This step allows you to make any modifications to the HTML that you require For most banners you won t need to do anything here However if your banner ad requires the navigation URL the URL that the banner launches when clicked
33. our testing For more information refer to the documentation on PayPal s site Instant Payment Notification The module s PayPal integration uses a feature called Instant Payment Notification IPN This means that once a buyer has submitted a payment the PayPal site makes a direct HTTP call to your DNN site to notify it that the payment has been made This means that your site must be publicly accessible via the Internet in order for this process to happen If your site uses an address such as localhost or a machine name that it not directly accessible from the PayPal servers then you will not receive the notification The IPN usually happens quickly but due to the nature of the Internet delays can occur If the IPNis not successfully made PayPal will retry at various intervals At the time of this writing PayPal indicates that failed IPN messages will be resent for up to four days after the original message For more information refer to the documentation on PayPal s web site https cms paypal com us cgi bin cmd _render content amp content_ID developer e_howto_admin_IPNintro You can view the list of payment notifications for a specific campaign by navigating to a campaign and clicking the Transactions link The Testing a Localhost Site If your test site is using localhost or a machine name or is otherwise inaccessible from the Intemet then campaigns will not be automatically approved after payment is submitted see section above on
