Securely erasing a hard drive really isn t that hard If you have a Mac with a FireWire port you can start it up in target mode mount it on the Desktop of another Mac and use the Disk Utility on the other Mac to erase your hard drive If you have the System disk that came with your computer can start up off it and use the copy of a Mac OS Bended Gouri Erase Free Space fion 415 OB EE Disk Utility on the System disk to securely erase your ees ol Pisa 434 661 Number of Folders 349564 hard drive If neither of these possibilities exists you can cable your hard drive to another Mac using a universal j 4 drive adapter like the one shown in last month s DoubleClick This pe 4 works with Windows as well as Macintosh Secure Erase Options These options specify how to erase the selegffed recovery applications from recovering it disk or volume to prevent disk Using the Disk Utility to scramble a drive is as easy as launching the utility selecting the drive you want to erase and then clicking on Erase Erase any partition or volume except the one you are running Don t Erase Data off of Erase external USB or FireWire drives or camera cards You This is quick and provides the leagf security It erases just the information used to cannot erase anything except the drive that the computer is access your files and leaves the the files unchanged Many

Now we have begun will start adding new tracks 16 At the bottom left hand corner is a plus sign click on the plus sign then click on the Real Instrument window and then the Create button get another track 17 This is where get slightly tricky plug in my headset to both the micro phone and the headset sockets The sockets are at the back on the bottom right What happens is that the computer plays the music into my ear via the headset and the computer itself cannot hear the music so it won t re record previous tracks on the new track 18 What I m going to do now is to sing harmony and only what I m singing will be picked up by my headset mike and it will be laid down on this new track track number three If took the microphone plug out and left the headphone plug in could sing at the computer and it would pick me up Now press the red record button again 19 When have finished laying down the track press play stop then return Now if unplug my headset then the play stop button will hear the metronome count with my singing and the new track with just my harmony on it 20 Next am going to play bass in front of the com puter so want the microphone in the computer to pick up my bass press the plus button etcetera and get a new track press the go back to the beginning sign 21 This time plug in only the headset jack 22 When press the record red button

16. tain direction it would whistle through the ear buds and drown out the sound This was alleviated by turning my head slightly so that the wind did not hit me directly in the face The Noise Reduction earbuds at 20 are the best buy of the four They provided good sound quality stability as far as staying in place and with the correct attachment good sound reduction The Platinum Series at 30 has a bit better sound quality while retaining the stability and noise dampening This is the set prefer The Stereo Headset earbud and microphone has reasonable sound quality dampening and stability It sells for 25 but has the added feature of a micro phone and a sound volume control right next to the clip You might like this one with the new cellphone laws in place Emerge Technology produces a very good headset at a middle of the road cost You can get a 5 headphone but you will be buying some thing with poorer sound quality and a cord that will probably break the first time it gets tugged the wrong way Emerge products range from 20 30 and are quality headphones that are sturdy You get good sound quality for a reasonable price There are headphones that sell for 50 and much more These are primarily for use in a studio and not for the average iPod listener You can t go wrong getting one of the Emerge Technology headphones Plus they have a lifetime war ranty All in all think will use the Emerge earbuds most of the time ek

19. volume by the regular Mac volume control at the top 11 Go to Track then click on New Basic Track at the bottom What is going to happen is that the metronome is going to tick along and it will be quite audible Now l m going to sing quietly into the com puter on the new track which is showing a light blue colour active track The upper track which is show ing Grey will be the metronome count and will sing along quietly in time with the metronome count The computer will record both tracks as it hears both tracks want that metronome count to sound quite strongly with the basic singing track that am going to lay down If plug the headset the metronome count will sound only in my ear and it will not appear on the sound track am using the metronome as if it s a simple drum Later will use the headset so the computer cannot hear the previously recorded tracks but can need separate independent tracks so can edit them later 12 You can press the red record button on the bottom which starts the recording and you will hear the metronome count to lead you in 13 let the metronome Count me in 4 beats in this case then play and sing the song 14 When have finished press the play stop button then press the return arrow which is three little boxes to the left which takes me right back to the be ginning 15 Now can clicked on play stop and hear if stayed on tempo

21. was a real pleasure it is well pack aged for safe transportation The people at Wacom care about you and your tablet experience as the first thing you see when you open the box is a greeting asking you to let them know how your Bamboo experience goes Everything inside the box has its own compartment including one for the pen and the pen tip extractor Also included are three extra replacement pen tips The pen fits into a pen holding strap on the side of the tablet Wacom recommend that when you are not using the pen to store it here but to put it into the holder by the eraser end first This will help to preserve the pressure sensitive tip also kept the plastic shipping covers to store over mine for extra protec tion as these are the working ends of the pen The pen Is extremely light is wireless and does not need a bat tery and is pressure sensitive This come in very handy when you use it to draw with as the harder you press down on the pen the wider the line you get in your drawing The pen also will write your name or using inkwell will allow you to write what you want to say and your commuter will type it for you One of the nice features is that you do not have to touch the tablet sur face to have the pen move the pointer on your screen this makes it very very fast It also has two buttons built in which will expand upon later The pen is tablet spe cific and will not work on other Bamboo tablets The overall size of

25. ack ground was clear but the subjects in the foreground were too dark Using the Smart Brush tool first selected the two under exposed subjects An adjustment layer was then created which you can then edit by double clicking its icon in the layers panel Green or red pins appear in the selection areas Clicking on one will open the relevant adjustment dialog box As you can see from the layers panel the first adjust ment was using Bright Eyes which brightened up my selection of the two subjects then slightly enhanced the sky using the Blue Skies option after se lecting the sky finished the photo by cropping and adding a column on the right for balance and definition The Smart Brush tool really helped simplify these tasks and could quickly see the results The PSE 8 Workspace What is noticeably different is that pallets are now called pan els and the shortcut icons on the 8 panels have been moved to the E he 222 bottom of the panel window You one oe can collapse or expand a panel by clicking once the black bar at the top or you can double click on the tab You can also col lapse your various palettes into tabs so that it will just take you one click to see everything you need Panels can be nested and the project bin can be moved into the panel area This will give you more space on your desktop If you want to hide everything but the Menu bar press the tab key

34. e more than a few security issues the rest of us don t face Internet cafes or Points as they are known in Europe can be your link with home amp friends while you travel especially if you have a Yahoo Hotmail Facebook or Gmail account that you can access from anywhere in the world Unfortunately you have no way of knowing how secure your information is when you are typing on a strange computer in an internet cafe for two reasons firstly because internet cafes usually only have Windows computers and they can be infested with malware programs called keyloggers that can be installed on the computer to capture and save everything typed on them and sec ondly because there really is no motive for the owner operators of in ternet cafes to protect your sensitive data Keyloggers generally work by intercepting the chain of events which occurs in microseconds between when the person using the computer makes a keystroke and when the keystroke shows up on the com puter screen The keylogger makes a note of what key was pressed before such an interception and passes the same information onto a log which can be recorded This is a process that takes a very small fraction of a second making it completely impossible for the person whose activity is being monitored to notice that anything is amiss May suggest that if you do intend to conduct potentially sensitive business like check your eBay and PayPal accounts do online bank ing and ma

37. ectory of the drive that the file was on gets amended to indicate that the location where the file is sitting is no longer protected territory The Directory is a catalog that exists on each piece of storage media that keeps track of what is on your media and where it resides Every sector on the drive is assigned a unique location address and the Directory keeps track of the contents of each of them Trashing a file just tells the Directory that the file s lo cation is now available to write new data onto What this means the good news is that if you delete or lose files due to your own care lessness or a disk error the files are usually still there and unless you have continued using your computer and overwritten their locations they can usually still be seen found and recovered if you have a util ity on hand that is able to ignore the information in the Directory and go right to the drive to see what is actually on it If a drive fails to mount or experiences a mechanical problem that prevents it from booting your computer your files are still on the drive and under the right circumstances they can be seen and salvaged If you experi ence software or hardware difficulties while downloading your pictures off your camera s memory card or accidentally erase it while there are pictures you have not yet downloaded your files are still on your memory card and under the right circumstances they can be seen and salvaged The big news from Pr

41. haw Kingston DataTraveler Bites the Dust Let s Look Inside to Find Out Why have a little 256 Meg Kingston DataTraveler USB flash drive that became a bit flaky Then it became totally flaky Then it became dead Usually flash drives are thought to last forever because they have no moving parts That s the theory anyway But although they have no moving parts they can succumb to abuse Mine did And when it did decided to break it open to see exactly why and how it had failed This is what found Before opened the drive noticed that the metal connector that plugs into the USB port was a bit sloppy Not sloppy in the port but sloppy in the drive It was possible to move it a tiny bit like it was loose When opened the drive found that the USB connector was secured to the board inside with two stiff clamping tangs that were neatly bent over to lock into slots in the board To make the grip even more secure the tangs were soldered to the card For communications there were four stiff studs soldered to four connector terminals pried back the tangs and the connector and card fell apart All six of the soldered contact points between the USB connector and the card showed discolouration or signs of sparking and arcing Now know why it was losing connection during use Submitted by Michael Shaw Matias Tactile Pro 3 0 the best keyboard Apple ever made Coming in 2010 rises again x There have been few emails have e

44. is the December 2009 DoubleClick a document created in QuarkXPress and saved by Quark as a PDF For me to turn a Quark document into a PDF is as easy as using the Export gt Layout as PDF found under the File menu A lot of programs offer the option of saving documents as PDFs and for many desktop publishing activities the cre ation of a PDF marks the end of the creative process The completed PDF goes off onto the Internet or is put onto a CD and it acts like an Acrobat Reader archive with the text images fonts and all of the content laid out ready to be served up on the screen of any one who can read it If you make PDFs with anything other than Adobe Acrobat you should be aware that the PDFs you create with your desktop publishing program or any other program that offers the option of saving documents as PDFs will likely not give you access to the same security options that the Adobe product will In fact just ex ported this issue as a PDF and opened it with Adobe Acrobat NOT Acrobat Reader to check the security options of this issue while cre ating it and found that Quark created the PDF with absolutely no se curity features at all As you can see from the image below this issue of the DoubleClick can be opened and printed by anyone who has downloaded it and it can be altered in all sorts of ways Everything is allowed That is because really don t think that anything that appears in the DoubleClick is of sufficient concern to

56. tion Platinum Series In Ear Style Earbuds So now have four earbuds from Emerge Technology that have sound quality as good as my Sony headphones but which cost less In general they stay in place way better than the Apple headphones but they are not as good as the Sony set which wrapped right around each ear the exception being the Sports earphones which are as good experimented with the three different size attachments that came with each earbud to determine the one that worked best with my outer ear canal This led to a reasonably stable arrangement in that rarely had to push the earbud back into place as moved around Now for the deciding factor will they drown out the traffic noise The sports earphones are not really earbuds They wrap around the ear and rest there They did not keep the traffic noise down but they would work better than the others during exercise There is no way these are going to fall out as you are running around would recommend these to anyone using their iPod while at the gym They are much lighter that the Sony headphones or any other headphone that most would use while exercising This headset costs about 20 00 USD The others did keep out the traffic noise such that was able to keep listening to my iPod without interruption Of course large trucks are still a problem but nothing is perfect did find another annoyance that the Sony headset did not have If the wind was in a cer
