STAGE LIKE AN IMAGE OF THE WORLD JE JU KW t dl T mh ell 1 J LUC AERA Le h er Lascenecomme image du monde V ra Ptackova he theme of the 1995 Prague Quadrennial PQ the search for a staging space was SO broad that it left the choice of which aspect of visual dramatic expression to focus on scenery costume or theatre architecture almost entirely up to the exhibitor And for the first time since 1967 this Quadrennial eliminated originally for reasons of space all of the sections and combined all of the exhibit sections into a single show Over the years the problems of the specificity of stage design and its exhibitability led to the creation at the PQ of a new kind of gallery artifact neither a document nor a live performance but a poetic statement about the general conditions of human existence What else in the end was the outright veristic exhibit of the USA by John Conklin at the PQ 87 in which scenic designs were presented within the setting of a stage design studio with every detail in place right down to the dregs at the bottom of an unfinished cup of coffee What else did the Finnish exhibit by Maija Pekkanen at the PQ 91 focus on but the overgrown terrain of our unconscious What else was the neighboring exhibit from the USSR Viacheslav Sokolov but a report on the state of the federation the setting for the stage designs consisted of Socialist Realist architecture c

4. as required by the statute the white maquette of the Anna Pavlova Classical Russian Ballet Theatre 1993 As the catalogue informs us the construction of this theater is currently in the planning stages Its style announces the return of socialist realism apparently indestructible The reverse face of the gulag The Swedes too cast a shadow over their image of the world in the center of the black circumscribed space of a Plexiglas cube are the handsomely arranged maquettes of thirty different productions thirty dramatic landscapes the work of the stage designer S ren Brunes Two of them have strayed here all the way from the seventies symbolically expanding the temporal element of the exhibit from four years to a whole era Situated above these layers of dramatic fates is a press whose screw slowly bores into a quarter century of effort its movement counterbalanced by the rise of four symbols on the outer sides of the cube shells a bird a bag of blood and a brain The movement of the mechanism was calculated so as to destroy this mini world by the end of the exhibition For practical reasons the press only descended halfway but this was sufficient to convey the idea of a world collapsing not only in its dramatic fates but physically as well felled little figures tilted floors ruined ceilings catastrophic upheaval Here for the first time in the history of the PQ and perhaps in the history of stage design exhibition overall time w
5. from the dramatic swerving of the verticals in Ale8 Votava s stage design for Verdi s Louisa Miller to MiloS Kar sek s phantas magorical masks to Ludmila V rossov s patch work costume designs for Massenet s Don Quixote V rossov s costumes were the most remarkable artifact of the Slovak exhibit and were among the best costumes of the entire exhibition Asia was never more Asian that at this year s PQ In the seventies the Japanese still exhibited mostly European and American drama and astonished viewers with design such as their scenery for Romeo and Juliet at the PQ 75 which displaced the Renaissance drama into a modern industrial superworld If they began to emphasize their own culture more at PQ 91 then this year they presented a programmatic return to their roots The circle of sand in the middle of their square exhibition space is not only an abstract shape whose purity we cannot help but admire but a symbol as well for it is the traditional form of the dojo the ring for the national sport of sumo wrestling This age old symbol simultaneously represents a long tradition and a starting point for Japanese stage designers The only non Japanese work represented is Strauss Salom transplanted from Jerusalem to a traditional Japanese dwelling Similarly the Syrian exhibit replaces the Irish pub of Synge s The Playboy of the Western World with the more exotic eastern atmosphere of room decorated with oriental rugs The diminu

13. architecture was almost completely overshadowed by scenic design and costume except in the case of the Belgian and Czech exhibits where on the contrary it dominated The Belgian exhibit focused exclusively on architecture and the Czech exhibit placed the main emphasis on it Both were awarded the silver medal I was most impressed however with the British artist Peter Ruthven Hale spatial conception for the drama Tutankhamen situated on the boundary between architecture and scenic design precisely the realm in which most revelations make their appearance The actors were positioned in a narrow gulch on steel bridges in lines one above the other suggesting unusual and interesting spatial possibilities Equally unusual was the architecture of the Spir la Theatre whose design received an honorable mention at PQ 91 and which appeared at this year s exhibition as a large scale model Of the projects exhibited the jury was most impressed with the reconstruction of the former E F Burian Theatre now the Archa Theatre Miroslav Melena the creator of the exhibit as well Unfortunately the scenic design of the Czech exhibit although it boasted many reputable names nonetheless constituted an unremarkable and indecipherable whole In no instance did the models and designs join with the architecture in a way that was attractive to the spectator And at long last the Golden Triga of the PQ 95 The exhibition s hi T the ghest honor was b
14. as incorporated into an ideational design as an active dramatic force Death in its various forms has always been present in the exhibits from Poland but this year for the first time it ceased to be the dominant element for it was overshadowed by a new theme the magic of the theatre space The Polish exhibit was created by Andrzej Majewski Krystian Lupa Leszek Madzik Jadwiga Mydlarska Kowal and Zofia de Ines who introduced the motif of insanity into the exhibit with her series of the metamorphoses of Cunegonde K tchen von Heilbronn Rather than showing the reality of our world the exhibit presented its magical image a space negated and multiplied by mirrors a manneristically endless construction elongated by the reflections of translucent and mirrored planes It was a matter of wandering and irreality in which the viewer in his multiplied mirror images becomes as fictional as the objects in the exhibit themselves If anyone Ges eer rule han the fatal attraction of the theatre through its irreality then the ish exhibit signe nieszka Koecher Hense j 2 i i EE y ee and tbe architect Pawel Dobrzycki is surely only The PQ has always constituted a display of cultural traditions and indeed the differences in national mentalities presented here has never ceased to delight us the Russians wadding coats and bars suffused with self absorbed suffering for instance or the pure forms and Hellenic spirit of the Greek exhibit whose lo

17. estowed the Brazilian exhibit s almost old fashioned installation of designs maquettes and DE di Jos Carlos Serroni who received his degree in architecture and urban design is a visual artist architect and theatre film and television scenic designer The uniqueness of his style derives from his combination of elements from all of these various professions the cinematic depth of illusion created by his spaces the multiple layers of significance of his stage constructions the postmodern SE of styles In his production of Brandao s Zero an intricate intersection encompasses the entire space of the stage in the curve of the twisting traffic lines i i and determ rhythm The atmosphere is thus created out of the clash between the romantic sweep of the ud ee and ee sobriety of the intersection itself and the unbelievability of the construction which towers above the scene is it a high rise building which boxes ora wall of theatre boxes resembling a lunii ETT SOU eae Serroni fills the stage of Andrade s Path of Salvation with a forest of metal pipes interspersed with Ser as tree pron and a few live trees This remarkable joining of abstract and naturalistic erception this ighli j P type of spatial and material collage was one of the highlights of the entire exhibition All of the spatial artifacts of the Prague Quadrennial an exhibition which i which involved the participati of forty countries from every continent will doubtless be d

24. o the past elements of Dmitri Mohov s work too particularly the flat painting technique and illusionistic landscapes of his backdrops recall the styles of the late Baroque and Romantic periods Lithuania exhibited a single production Strindberg s The Dream Play directed by Jonas Vaitkus produced by Jonas Arcikauskas Vilnius 1995 a symbolist play about the pain of human beeing Strindberg himself prescribes the usual painted coulisse stage but suggests supplementing the solid coulisses with a changeable backdrop featuring stylized murals simultaneously representing rooms buildings and landscapes This is the setting which in 1902 was supposed to identify with and intersect the action on the stage In their 1995 production the Lithuanians have placed the emphasis on the theme of suffering and the symbols of the victim a life size red rocking horse tied to a pole and hung upside down an iron crucifix tangled ropes bells leaden spoons and cups without bottoms strewn on the floor Strindberg s original vision of a forest of enormous hibiscus flowers in bloom white pink purple sulfur yellow and violet becomes at the end of our century a row of spiked iron black roses reminiscent of a German expressionist painting The exhibit was designed by Helmutas Shabaseviczius Gretar Reynisson the only stage designer and creator of the Icelandic exhibit chose to focus on the emptiness of contemporary reality A central cube sho
