LE Dossier PALENOFTERE INTRODUCTION Le Centre d exposition de Val d Or est heureux d accueillir le cheminement et le r sultat de plus d une dizaine d ann es de recherches r alis es par le Valdorien d origine Daniel Corbeil En effet c est en 1989 que le Centre exposait ses oeuvres pour la premi re fois puis nouveau en 1993 lors du 2 symposium en arts visuels de l Abitibi T miscamingue Dix ans plus tard nous le retrouvons avec un parcours artistique qui s est enrichi de plusieurs expositions tant au Qu bec qu l tranger ainsi que d uvres publiques qui sins rent quotidiennement dans l univers des Valdoriens et desT miscabitibiens Daniel Corbeil pr sente en ce d but d ann e 2003 un projet qui rel ve autant de la sculpture que de l installation comme en font foi engin volant les plans les croquis et les photographies a riennes On per oit rapidement dans Le dossier bal nopt re la place occup e par IAbitibi T miscamingue ses ressources mini res et foresti res ses grandes tendues sa plan it Le th me central de l uvre le transport est lui aussi partie prenante d une dynamique propre au d veloppement des r gions dites loign es comme l Abicbi T miscamingue Les questions environnementales sont dans l air du temps comme en t moigne le Rendez vous national des r gions la fin de l ann e 2002 L utilisation appropri e et durable des ressources naturelles la r duction et le
4. d research by the Val d Or native Daniel Corbeil In 1989 the Centre showed his work for the first time then again in 1993 as part of the 2 symposium en arts visuels de Abitibi T miscamingue Ten years later we rediscover him In the meantime his path as an artist has been highlighted by numerous exhibitions as many in Quebec as elsewhere In addition because of their prominent place in the public domain works by Daniel Corbeil are part of the daily lives of the people ofVal d OrandAbitibi Temiscamingue In this exhibition entitled The Bakinopt re File Daniel Corbeil proffers a project that engages both sculpture and installations with its flying machine plans models and aerial photographs Almost immediately we apprehend the prominent place occupied by Abitibi Temiscamingue its forestry and mineral resources its vast spaces its linearity The central theme of the work transportation is pivotal to the dynamic development of isolated regions like Abitibi Temiscamingue As reflected at the Rendez vous national des r gions a provincial conference sponsored by Quebec to discuss regional development in November 2002 issues related to the environment are highly topical The appropriate and sustainable use of natural resources the reduction and recycling of waste and the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere are essential to the maintenance and improvement of the quality of the environment and to assure sustainable de
5. hot air balloon and its representation While since the 1930s we ve turned away from the dirigible comfortable but rather slow in favour of speed oriented flying techniques the postmodern imagination seems to have some poetic might we say nostalgic attachment for this device which contrary to the plane or rocket is distinguished by a quiet force a tranquil movement somewhat like the whales mentioned above As evidence of this interest one has only to think of the countless comic books of the last 15 years in which skies are furrowed by sometimes quite fantastically configured airships One could reasonably explain cartoonists interest by the fact that the flight of the dirigible as opposed to that of airplanes can be readily captured in drawing and tends not to shatter the frame of the strip with the force of its movement From this point of view the dirigible appears at once spectacular and reassuring since it allows the human being to evolve peacefully in aerial space to transform his view of the world without enduring a deafening technology In this sense like the hang glider this type of airship is what brings man closest to animal flight Not surprising then that Corbeil gave a name having both animal and scientific overtones to his major artistic project articulated as it is around the idea of the dirigible Like the early twentieth century creative engineers who sought to develop the airship s potential in their production
6. iennes cens ment photographi es depuis le dirigeable Il appartient cependant chacun de pr ciser le sens et fa direction de ces images selon le sc nario qui lui semble le plus probant Aucun mode d emploi donc mais une seule consigne se laisser porter par des images qui jouent avec notre sens du r el et tentent souvent de le d jouer en s installant dans l espace ludique du simulacre Jean Philippe Beaulieu THE BALENOPTERE FILE What is Bal nopt re Its scientific name may suggest a winged whale On first impression the appellation evokes an animalistic image with seemingly divergent qualities breadth volume and the aquatic world on the one hand lightness the capacity for flight and the aerial world on the other The paradox is only apparent however Just as the whale a marine mammal brings together attributes from two orders of the animal world Bal nopt re may very well be both voluminous and aerial In truth with this zoological term artist Daniel Corbeil reinvests an early twentieth century technology the dirigible which as we know ensures lift by means of a large balloon skin containing lighter than air gas Fascinated by flying objects particularly by these balloons and their graceful whale like motion through space the Abitibi artist has striven since 1996 to develop an installation that seeks to reactualize the possibilities of dirigible technology He is not alone in his fascination for the
