36. 2 SIS Grade 9 3 The Bridge Between Middle and High School Frances Namba SIS Gr 9 HR teacher English This is a very busy trimester for the grade 9 students On top of all the regular classes clubs and activities we also have two big events to get ready for the Sports Day and the school trip Both events require the students to cooperate to be organized to show leadership and to show respect for the ideas of others The iin have been working very hard knowing that it is for the benefit of the grade as a whole and that they will sometimes have to give up their chances to play or get what they want in order to make things work for others On behalf of all the grade 9 students and teachers I would like to say a big thank you to them all I m sure their efforts will be rewarded with two suc cessful events and special memories that everyone will keep with them for a very long time IN

WRO ois B Results OIS IB RESULTS TO WRITE HOME ABOUT Miyuki Endo IBDP coordinator At the beginning of July IB students all over the world eagerly impatiently or anxiously awaited the results of their May exam session and so did the 17 OIS IB candidates They were not disappointed The class of 2014 cohort can be proud of one of the best set of results in OIS IB history All our students were awarded the diploma achieving a 10096 passing rate They did so with excellent marks and a subject average above the world wide average the school aver age was 35 points while the worldwide average was 29 81 points The OIS all subject score was 5 62 points which is 0 43 points up from the previous year These results are all the more impressive because unlike some other schools we encourage all students to tackle the full diploma and refuse no one It is also noteworthy that seven of those students received the prestigious Bilingual diploma for which they needed to complete two Language A courses We are so pleased with these very positive IB results not only because they make the school proud but also because they open up excellent prospects for our students future All INTERCULTURE FALL 2014 No 141 WRO

On July 19th the kids met their families and Fukushima sensei and I went to our hotel at the Goetheplatz During the last week my family visited me and we did a little sightseeing On July 25th we left Munich around 4pm and arrived in Osaka on saturday 26th in the evening I think the kids had a lot of fun with their families and in Mu nich We were really lucky with the weather Fukushima sensei and I had absolutely no problems during the trip I really hope that the kids enjoyed this trip to the extent that they will con tinue German next trimester or maybe later I wish them all the best 13 INTERCULTURE FALL 2014 No 141 Two Schools Together SOIS amp OIS Students Collaborate on Literacy Project Lora Vimont OIS Grade 4 Teacher The SOIS High School Children s Literature class and the OIS Grade 4 students have joined forces this year as they have done in past years for a collaborative literacy project focusing on the interpretation creation and ultimate sharing of original children s books Under the supervision of SOIS High School English teacher Mark Avery and OIS Grade 4 teacher Lora Vimont the students meet up for four sessions over a 2 month period to engage in a variety of cooperative language activities The first session involves the SOIS students observing a teacher guided reading lesson and then working alongside with individual OIS students to explore the idea of how powerful images can help an author

128. 20 players and varsity players felt more responsible for winning AISA since we had won it for last two years and I had to lead the team as a captain for the second time We felt that we won the championship as a team and it was the most memorable moment in my life after having a very close game against Korea International School and earning the championship winning point 26 24 in the 4th set to win 3 1 It was the best game I ve ever played since I started playing volleyball at 6 years old I was glad that I was able to produce my best game as my last volleyball game for SOIS We really appreciate the coaches and managers for supporting the team and giving us the most memorable season Thank you so much and I wish next year s team the best of luck in their pursuit for a remarkable 4th championship in a row S Varsity Girls Volleyball Ai Kano OIS Gr 11 SISI I4F From October 16th to 19th ten selected members from both OIS and SIS grades 11 and 12 traveled to Yokohama Interna tional School YIS for AISA Compared to previous years this year s varsity team experi enced many difficulties One of the problems was that we lost one of our starting member from an accident She not only was a great player but also had the ability to bring the team togeth er So losing her was much bigger than just losing any other player Another difficulty was how the seniors having to study for exams could not join many of the pra

TERCULTURE FALL 2014 No 141 Students seem to be getting used to this in between year where they are crossing the bridge between middle school and high school From this trimester they are joining high school sports clubs and are getting used to being the youngest least experienced in the group again In Sports Day they are working as a grade rather in houses for the first time and will be compet ing against the older students Another difference 1s that students no longer receive progress reports in the middle of each trimester I have heard some peo ple say that they miss having these reports as they don t have a clear idea of how they are doing in their classes My response to this 1s please go and talk to your teachers whenever you have a question or want some feedback on how you are doing We are always happy to discuss your progress with you and to give you advice on what you need to do to improve I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to be an active learner to take responsibility for your own learning and devel opment and to take advantage of any chances and opportunities open to you Teachers are here to help and support you but you are the ones who must take the initiative and make the most of the resources available to you This will be even more impor tant next trimester when you begin choosing your courses for the first year of high school and have to take even more respon sibility for your learning You are taking t

138. ctices Therefore the INTERCULTURE FALL 2014 No 141 Dow d P LE rg ie oe k i EE e yet hanes P ic T wT ill 4 2 y NN Y A 4 4 w Ba vana r F team had few practices where all ten members had a chance to play together This did lead to a lack of communication but overcoming the difficulties in WJAA led us to be a stronger team in AISA There were only 5 teams that participated in this year s AISA which meant that there were no semifinals Therefore we had to win all of the games or have only one loss to go to the finals We lost to MBIS and YIS which automatically made us be come 4th or 3rd We wound up in tears when we did not make it to the finals but were able to reset our feelings to face KIS again The game went to the final set where we defeated them 16 14 and received 3rd place I will never forget how everyone crowded up on the court as soon as we won and shed happy tears Thank you to those who supported us throughout the whole season Special thanks to our coaches Hirai Sensei and Mr Sheriff who taught us for almost 5 months 10 16 19 YIS OIS SIS 11 12 10

145. nts but also to have a deep understanding of one s own culture and history and how it relates to others On a daily basis with the teaching and learning in the class room to our extracurricular program to the large community events we hold on an annual basis all these contribute to devel oping international mindedness Two of the very best activities which focus on international mindedness are the international fair and the model united nations program Almost all international schools hold an international fair These events feature national costumes food dance etc Some in the international community have downplayed the impor tance of this kind of event and claim that it is very superficial and does not provide a deep understanding of intercultural differences I do not think of it as superficial but as a pathway for deeper understanding of another culture Educational con sultant Darlene Fisher recently asked what is the first thing one experiences when one travels to a new destination It is the sights and sounds and smells are often very different from those you are used to It is these initial observations that things are most different on the surface and these can provide one with very important first steps into understanding the culture of the other For example why is Japan known for sushi With a population of 146 million in a country the size of the state of California and much of the topography mountainous it m

149. r 12 In a collaborative volunteer trip between SIS and OIS we headed to the northeast area of Japan Tohoku Specifically we were able to stay at the city of Sendai Most of the work took place in Yuriage a town outside of Sendai where we went for the first time on our second day of the trip We were able to lis ten to a local man talk about his personal experience Listening to a person who was directly affected by the disaster tell his sto ry we all knew that the restoration process of the area was far from over One particular thing he told us stuck out for me He dum mi min a arie ee E p E r me et atoms m ae GR told us the importance of what we do and also how important it was for us to tell everyone what we saw and felt because these were things that can only be experienced first hand and we were fortunate enough to go there and volunteer So instead of listing out ev erything we did day by day I would like to write a fraction of my personal experience there For many students it was not the first time volunteering in the area but for students like me who have never been there it came as quite a shock to see a plot of land taken over by nature that was a town a community with people and their houses Since the news does not report as much on the consequences of the disaster I think it is safe to say that many of us thought that the area had recovered much more t
150. s run by Mr Myers and Mr Deiterly As the weather had remained beautifully sunny throughout 10 September 17 2014 the day it was possible to complete this activity outside over looking the bay area right by the docking point of the Santa Maria which several people chose to include in their art work During this session the students applied skills that they had learned in the classroom to create a detailed landscape draw ing of a section of what they could see by using different levels of contrast and shading to indicate the differences between background and foreground This activity led to the exploration of how what they saw inside and out side the aquarium could be applied to creating a 3D land scape from their imagination Students hard at work on their art task At the end of the day once all students had experienced both activities it was time to leave the Tempozan Harbour Area but there was still time for one final treat on the way back to the buses as the students passed a juggling street performer There was lots of both science and art on display here but the students were content to simply watch the performer carry out his show
151. school everyday and also attend their classes This experience allowed us to see the differences between Germany s and Japan s school systems For example I learned that in Germany school ends at different times ac cording to the day It can end from as early as 12p m to as late as 5p m In school they mostly speak German but some of the students prefer to speak Bavarian outside classes rather than German My host family also took me to the BMW museums and treated me to traditional Bavarian restaurants I thought this experience was really important because not only was I able to see different types of cars and enjoy great food but the German architecture of the museum amazed me and I learned that even after all these years Bavarian culture is still strong All in all this trip was intercultural because not only were we able to learn about the history and cultures of Germany and Bavaria but we also got to learn about the cultures of Greece Egypt and Austria During this trip we learned more about the history and cultures by visiting different types of museum hav ing homestays and visiting castles 2 Trip to Munich from July 13th to 26th Katja Weiner German July 13th 14th On Sunday July 13th we met at the Kansai International Air port around 8 30pm with the students and took the flight to Mu nich and arrived on April 14th around 1pm in Germany After a short trip with the S Bahn to central Munich we arrived at the youth hostel M
152. tell a story Using the children s book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by author illustrator Chris van Allsburg students work in small groups to inquire into create and share a story using only a single picture taken from the book In the second session SOIS students prepare storyboarding and dramatic performance ac tivities to engage the Grade 4s in another Chris van Allsburg book The Wretched Stone The third session allows for the older students to try out some of their own literature based ac tivities on the Grade 4s to gain a better sense of their language abilities and preferences After this the SOIS students go off to work on creating their own children s books Ultimately in the fourth session the SOIS students are given the opportunity to share their creations with the Grade 4s who are then asked to give their feedback Not only is this a fun collaborative time for all but also an excellent way for both groups to gain perspec tives in literature that otherwise could not be gotten in the regu lar classroom experience SISH SIS Mr Avery Children s Literature SIS OIS4

154. unchen Park and got our rooms The hostel was clean and the staff really helpful and friendly In the evening the kids walked around the area of the hostel and discovered the surrounding supermarkets July 15th Luckily we had really good weather all day long and first went to central Munich and did a little sightseeing around the Marienplatz After taking a look around we went to the K nig splatz with the Glyptothek The K nigsplatz is surrounded by many buildings from the ancient world for example the Propy laea a city gate the State Collections of Antiques and the Glyp tothek After a walk around this area some students visited the Egyptian museum with us and others went back to the city for shopping Most of the facilities in Munich are free of charge for kids up to 16 years so the students saved some money July 16th Wednesday we went to the Deutsches Museum located on INTERCULTURE FALL 2014 No 141 a small 1sland in the Isar river The museum is the largest for sci ence and technology in the world Permanent exhibitions include for example Ceramics Chemistry Chronometry Computers or En ergy Technology The museum is large enough to spend a few days in and the stu dents enjoyed the museum and walked through the exhibitions had a coffee and something to eat Later that day we went to the Pinakothek der Moderne a Gallery of Modern Art We were very lucky that day because Wednesdays are free of charge beca
155. use they are funded by the Allianz insurance The museum itself combines four independent museums the Sammlung Moderne Kunst Die Neue Sammlung The International Design Museum Munich the Architekturmuseum der Technischen Universit t Munchen and the Staatliche Gra phische Sammlung Students were very interested in modern art so they took a walk through the many museums July 17th We went to the Dachau concentration camp memorial site Students had 1 5 hour to walk through the camp side They could see the old prison cells the history of the prisoners the rooms where the prisoners lived gas chambers furnaces etc I preferred to walk around alone The students also walked in little groups and some of them were shocked especially by the photos of prisoners and their stories After leaving the camp the students could decide if they wanted to take a day off or go to Bad Tolz with us Bad Tolz is a small town 50 kilometers away from Munich Two students joined us on the trip and we spent a day with delicious food and ice cream hiking around the town and visits to different churches in Bad Tolz July 18th This day was the last day before the students met their home stay families and we spent it in Salzburg Austria The train ride takes about three hours from Munich The main sightseeing spots in Salzburg are the old town and the castle Hohensalz burg When we arrived on top of the Hohensalzburg we gave the students some time off
156. ven with just this experience I was already able see how different Germany was to Japan This is because in the hostel they would serve us German style breakfast which included different types of bread cheese cold cuts and jam honey Because we rode the train everyday as our means of transportation I saw how different Germany s train system is compared to the ones they have here in Japan For example the doors there are not auto matic so every time you want to go out you must slide the door open for yourself Also no one really checks if you have a train ticket or not so if you re lucky you can get away with riding the train even without buying a ticket We were also given the chance to visit different types of museums Egyptian Greek German and Art Because of this experience we were able to learn a lot about their history and what their culture is like For example in the Egypt museum we saw how their ancient architecture looked and in the Greek museums we saw a lot of sculptures about their war We also went to the Dachau Concentration camp and although this isn t a museum I learned a lot about the German history because we were able to see what the prisoners went through and how they were treated We also learned about the Austrian culture be cause when we visited Salzburg we went to old castles and we also had a look around Mozart s house On the second week we had homestays and we had to fol low our homestay buddies to

158. y and then guided to their designated vehicle During the journey south to the central Osaka venue the groups were informed who would be beginning their day exploring the aquarium and who would be using the time up until lunch hon ing their artistic skills as they focused on the surrounding areas Once there the two groups went their separate ways knowing they would see each other again at lunch Inside the aquarium in addition to simply marveling at the huge diversity of organisms on display the students were asked to focus on observing the multitude of different animals in their respective habitats and explaining how their adaptations enable them to survive and thrive The route snaked through the in these conditions building taking everyone passed the gargantuan Pirarucu an air breathing fish the Pirarucu After this came the ever playful mammals of the sealions seals and dolphins which were followed by the penguins All of which were a mere warm up for the main event of the pacific tank which contained the newly acquired Whale Shark ham merhead sharks and several different schools of fish Beyond this point the m 7 interest didn t wane as the students passed the terrifying giant crabs and then just finally stroking a stingray be fore it was time to move on the grade 7 students pose in front ofa narwhaal Upon leaving the aquarium the students had their lunch which was followed by their art session which wa
