9. 36 49 54 2008 3 Changes in fecal corticosterone concentrations in brooding period of the Black tailed Gulls Larus crassirostris Abstract The present research focused in the assumption that for general avian species departure from the breeding ground after breeding may inflict stresses The amount of fecal corticoster one of the Black tailed Gulls was measured starting from nesting to fledging to obtain an index to the magnitude of stresses The result revealed statistically significant peaks of corticosterone at egg laying and fledging periods The correlative analysis of the above data and the testosterone data collected as another index suggested the corticosterone regulation shifted during the period between egg laying and incubation and also between brooding and fledging This phenomenon can be interpreted as reflecting strong stresses manifesting themselves in males by territorial defense and mate guarding during the first half of the breeding period and in the latter half both males and females appeared to be under strong stresses caused by brooding No apparent hormonal changes at the time of fledging were detected in the present experiment but the possibilities for the birds stressful experience Megumi Sato Keiko Yashima Masakatsu Shio
