JUESTIONNAIRE 12 HOW SHOULD THE TAXES FROM NORTH SEA AND GAS BE SPENT University College Cardiff q Box 78 Cardiff 1XL AXA Telephone Cardiff 44211 Dear Sir Madam Even if you don t pay income tax you will pay some indirect taxes such as value added tax or local rates and you will also benefit from government expenditure You will have heard that the Government will receive for some years many millions of pounds in taxes from North Sea oil and gas and that they are discussing what to do with this money People can of course have different opinions as to whether the government should be involved in the oil industry But we are not concerned with that only with your views on how the money should be used as long as it is available We can think of the money as a sort of legacy which the government can pass on to the citizens either by providing things for them making expenditures or by leaving them with income to buy things for themselves by reducing their taxes or some of each This questionnaire gives you a chance to say what you think Parts 1 and 2 of the questionnaire go together Part 1 shows how each pound of Central and Local Government expenditure was spent in 1976 and how each pound was raised With the help of special gummed slips you are asked to say which services there should be more of or which taxes you would like to see cut or some of each Part 2 lists the main it
