4. channel then press the P LOCK key for more than 4 seconds The P L LED will go out Programming Future Satellites The UST 9000 is designed to identify all the satellites that are currently in orbit In the future there may be new satellites put into orbit The UST 9000 has one letter key and 9 number keys that can be assigned to new satellites You sim ply program the satellite position and assign an identification and number with the or Follow the same programming procedure as you did with the existing satellites Operation Now that the antenna is set up and properly operating and the UST 9000 is programmed with satellite positions and spe cial channels you are ready to pioneer the new frontiers of satellite television With the UST 699 infrared remote in hand and a copy of your favorite satellite program guide try each of the functions listed below All operations described belo a are accessed by the remote control used with the UST 900 or the UST 88 Remote Station a a ee ee Press the Power Key on the Remote The UST 9000 will turn on and all the displays will light The last satellite and channel previously watched will come on You can adjust the volume by pressing the Volume up and down keys or mute the volume by pressing the Mute key Select a Channel Press O 9 keys to select any of 24 channels on the current Satellite The selected channel will appear in the channel dis play and that channel will
5. position are now stored in memory esi ela 2 sme Takia PANOT bis beast E tle tae iin bar BT hati ik EDEN Den Ak Lathe oe gh ee IIE pe ar EMELE re n udio Programming Special A The UST 9000 has been programmed at the factory for all standard audio settings Check your local program guide for audio settings on the satellite which are not 6 8 MHz Mono If any of the channels have audio settings other than 6 8 MHz you will need to program the audio for those channels Find the channels in the guide which have special audio set tings Tune the receiver to the first channel Press the Audio 1 keys to step up or down to the correct frequency If the audio portion of the channel is broadcast in multiplex stereo press the Mode key until the MPX LED lights The Stereo indicator will also light if the audio portion of the channel is broadcast on two audio frequencies press the Audio 2 keys to select the second audio frequency as listed in your program guide If the broadcast is in stereo press the Mode key to select Discrete or Matrix stereo The stereo indicator will light as well as the DSC Dis crete or MTRX Matrix LED Press the DNR key to activate the Dynamic Noise Reduction feature The DNR LED will light Press the NAW key if the program guide calls for narrow band audio Selecting a Satellite and Channel To select a preprogrammed satellite simply press the Type key until the desired satellit
6. to watch Press the Video key under the lid Press the channel keys for the number of the station you wish to call Press the call key The TV screen will display the station number satel lite type and number and the channel Fine Tuning the Video When satellite positions were programmed the best possible picture was tuned There may be times when the signal strays or natural forces cause the alignment of the antenna to change If a certain satellite is consistently bad you may want to reprogram its setting If the signal is temporarily off you can fine tune the picture by momentarily pressing the East or West key If the picture is still not Satisfactory try pressing the Skew keys on the front panel The Video Fine key is primarily used for Ku band reception but may help with some C band satellites There may be other factors that affect the picture quality See the Helpful Hints section of this guide Select an Audio Station The UST 9000 also has a 99 station memory for satellite radio programs You can store your favorite radio channels and access them by calling the station number for that channel The receiver will automatically tune to the satellite channel and audio ready to enjoy Press the Audio key under the lid Press the channel keys for the number of the station you wish to call Press the Call key The TV screen will display the radio station number satellite type and number and the channel NOT

Down Limit buttons on the back of the UST 9000 are used to stop the travel of the antenna in both the east and west directions If there is some kind of physical obstruction or other reason that the antenna should not trav el the full distance of its arc the Up or Down limit should be set to stop the travel To set the limit advance the antenna to the farthest position it should travel Press the Down button for a western position or the Up button for an eastern position IMPORTANT BE SURE TO SET BOTH THE UPPER AND LOWER LIMITS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE IF THE LIMITS ARE NOT SET THE ACTUATOR WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY Additional Limit Settings The normai limit of travel for the actuator arm is about 18 inches If the most easterly satellite cannot be reached by the antenna when the actuator arm is fully extended an internal limit switch should be adjusted Remove the back case of the actuator motor housing and locate the red limit switch and cam Loosen the two screws holding cam Turn the cam clockwise until the screw head is located in the center of the slot Tighten screws and replace actuator case Press the Counter Clear switch on back of the unit Press the East key to move the antenna to an eastern satellite Move the antenna about 10 counts beyond the sat ellite and press the Upper Limit switch If the eastern satellite is still out of range repeat the preceding steps and rotate cam further Be sure to reset Upper and Lowe

10. the bi annual solar outage Due to the seasonal changes of the earth s axis the satellite belt moves between the earth and the sun When the satel lite belt moves directly between the sun and your antenna the satellite transmissions will be overpowered by the natural radio transmissions of the sun This kind of satellite eclipse occurs twice a year around the spring and fall equinox As the satellite eclipse approaches you may notice a gradual daily increase in interference It will peak for about 10 30 minutes with a completely distorted picture As the eclipse decreases so will the amount of interference until the picture is back to clear normal operation The degree of interference and th timing of this phenomenon varies with the satellite your geo graphical location and the size of your antenna Unfortunate ly the only solution is to tune to a satellite that is east of the sun s position until it has passed the satellite you were watching Other Sources of Interference All electrical equipment is susceptible to interference from other electrical devices The UST 9000 is an extremly sensitive unit and may pick up interference from any household appli ance If you experience temporary audio or video interference you should check other equipment in your house Appliances such as refrigerators washers dryers microwave ovens pumps power tools hair dryers etc may cause a variety of annoying interference Also radio transmit

Check the AC power cord to make sure it is plugged into an outlet that is not controlled by a wail switch 3 Check the main circuit breaker on the back of the unit B Problem The indicator lights are on but no TV picture or audio Solution 1 Check the power switch on the TV or monitor Check the cable between the RF Out connector on the back of the unit and the VHF In on the TV set Make sure both con nections are secured 2 Check the channel selector on the TV to be sure it is set to 3 or 4 and that the 3 4 switch on the back of the unit is set to the same number 3 Check to see if the P L LED is on Parental Lock may be engaged i 4 Check another channe on the satellite The current on may not have any programming Troubleshooting 7 5 Check the cable between the 1 GHz In on the back of the unit and the 1 GHz Out on the Low Noise Block Convert er Make sure the cable is not broken and the connections are secure 6 Check the alignment of the antenna Press the Scan key and look for flashes of color on the screen When video is evident press the Scan key again to stop on that channel Press the East and West key momentarily to align the antenna for the best picture 7 If you still do not have a picture press the Scan key and the East or West to move the antenna to another satellite When video flashes on the screen stop the east or west movement and the channel scan Tune in the satellite as described above

E if you call a satellite that has not been programmed the No display will flash and then return to the previous satellite To make sure you get the most out of satellite television viewing we offer the following information The sophisticat ed engineering required to tune in satellite signals from about 22 000 miles away can be as mysterious as space itself We hope that this information will take some of the mystery out of this technology making it even more enjoyable for you External Interference The most common cause of interference for a satellite televi sion system is terrestrial interference It is caused by local telephone or data microwave links If your antenna is located close to or in the path of a microwave tower you may experi ence snowy video sparkles or a distorted picture This kind of interference is usually not constant and may appear to increase and decrease at different times of the day Since telephone traffic is busiest during the daytime you may notice the most interference during daytime viewing You may also notice that this interference occurs only on vertical or hori zontal channels On the back of the UST 9000 is a switch labeled TI ON OFF If you experience terrestrial interference turn the TI filter on If the problem still exists you may need to relocate your antenna or use more sophisticated filters Con tact your Uniden dealer for more information Solar Outage Another cause of interference is
13. come on Press key and in 2 seconds channel 1 will appear Press keys 2 2 and channel 22 will appear Press the channel up or down keys to rapidly step through each channel Select a Satellite Open the lid at the top of the remote Press the Type key until the letter of the satellite you wish to view appears Press the No key until the satellite number appears Press the Call key The antenna will move to the preprogrammed position for that satellite Select the desired channel on that satellite If the satellite you selected is not programmed in memory the Satellite display will revert to the last satellite Select the Audio When a satellite and channel have been called the audio will come on as Audio 1 6 8 MHz Mano This setting is common for most programming If your local satellite program guide indicates a different setting press the Mode key for Discrete or Matrix stereo Press the Narrow key if the guide calls for narrow band audio Tune the Audio 1 frequency to the pre scribed setting Tune the Audio 2 frequency to its setting Select DNR for clearer audio Whenever a channel or satellite is changed the audio will revert to Audio 1 6 8 MHz Mono Select a Video Station The UST 9000 has a 99 station memory for video programs 4 You can store your favorite channels and access them byg Calling the station number for that channel The receiver will automatically tune to the satellite channel and audio ready
14. e letter is displayed Next press the No key until the satellite s number is displayed Check your local program guide to be sure that the correct satellite is displayed Press the Call key The antenna will automatically move to the position for that satellite Once the desired satellite has been located press the channel keys to select a channel The audio portion of that channel will automatically tune to 6 8 MHz Mono and Wide band modes unless special audio frequenci s have been program med Double check the audio information displayed with your pro gram guide to be sure all information is correct Press the Memo key to enter the audio information into memory Whenever this satellite and channel are selected the audg portion will automatically be tuned as programmed Contin ue programming each channel that requires a special audio setting NOTE Most satellite audio programming will be broadcast on 6 8 MHz which has already been preprogrammed into your receiver Your local program guide will keep you updat ed on which satellites and channels currently broadcast ster eo audio and what the correct frequencies are for tuning Continue to the next satellite following the same procedure until ail satellite positions and all special audio settings are stored in memory NOTE The UST 9000 has a memory back up circuit that will keep the memory for about 1 year in the event of a power failure Selecting Audio If you wish to change

16. ecall the display press the Call button NOTE The superimposed graphics will not appear on chan nels that are not actively broadcasting LS A a ee Memory Lock When all the satellite channel and audio information has been programmed the memory function can be locked to avoid accidental erasure or misprogramming When the memory lock is activated the UST 9000 will not accept any additional programming command except to turn the Paren tal Lock feature on or off The East and West key will move the antenna only 10 counts for fine tuning To lock the mem ory press the Lock key on the front panel The Lock LED will light to confirm that the memory is locked To unlock the memory press the Lock key for more than 4 seconds The Lock LED will turn off Parental Lock The UST 9000 has a special feature which will allow any Sumber of channels on any satellite to be locked out or blocked from viewing If you feel that a certain program is not suitable for viewing you can lock out that channel so that it cannot be seen To activate the Parental Lock cail the satellite and channel that you wish to lock Press the P Lock key on the front panel of the receiver The P L LED will light to con firm that that channel is locked Whenever that channel is called it will appear blank on the TV screen and the P L LED will light You can activate the Parental Lock for a total of 10 channels To turn the Parental Lock off call the satellite and

18. n will flicker from the ideo signal Release the East key and press the Scan key to op the channel scan and any 110 120V AC outlet Use the remote control from the receiver pointed at the front of the UST 88 to control all of the functions of your satellite system The superimposed graphics feature will allow you to see the satellites and chan nels you select on your second TV screen You can also pur chase a second remote control UST 699 to use with the UST 88 If you do not have a UST 88 be sure to ask your Uniden dealer for full details Press the channel Up or Down key to locate an active chan nel If the picture appears distorted or scrambled press the polarity key to change polarity If this improves the picture continue If the picture remains distorted select a new chan nel and try the polarity setting again Press the East or West key momentarily to fine tune the antenna to that satellite Press the Skew keys for addi tional fine tuning When the best picture is achieved compare the active channels and the polarity setting on that satellite with your local program guide to identify the satellite to which you are tuned Press the Type key until the correct letter appears in the display for that satellite Press the No key until the correct number appears in the display Press the Memo key to enter the position for that satellite The satellite number will flash twice to confirm entry The satellite and its
19. nt to assign to that channel 1 99 Write that number down along with the program information Press the Memo key Whenever you call that station number the UST 9000 will automatically tune in the preprogrammed channel you want to watch Programming Audio Station Channels Call the satellite and channe of your favorite satellite radio program Select the frequency as listed in your local program guide All satellite radio broadcasts are on the narrow band Press the N W key and check to make sure the Narrow LED is on When you are sure your selection is correct press the Audio preset key Select the station number you wish to assign 1 99 Write down that information then press the Memo key Whenever you call that audio station number the UST 9000 will automaticaliy tune to the preprogrammed radio broadcast you selected Superimposed Graphics Whenever any key on the remote control is pressed the cur rent station number satellite and channel information is dis played on the lower portion of the TV screen This feature allows you to check all programming details to be sure the correct channel or radio station has been selected It is also helpful when using the UST 88 Remote Station The informa tion will be displayed as station number if any P 00 satel lite type and number F 1 and the channel number 00 CH if Ku band is used the screen will display only KU After 4 seconds the display wil disappear To r
20. r limit switches on rear of unit meson arate IMPORTANT Make sure cam screws are tight before replacing actuator case if actuator limit cam is not secure it will cause permenant damage to your unit UST 88 Connection UST 88 Connection The optional UST 88 allows you to control your UST 9000 from another TV away from the receiver Connect the 2 way video splitter included to the RF output cable on the receiv er Connect your main TV to one output on the splitter and connect your second TV where the UST 88 will be used to the other output Run a cable RG 59 from the Remote Sta tion connector on the rear of the UST 9000 to the input on the rear of the UST 88 Place the UST 88 on top of your second TV and plug the AC adaptor into the rear of the unit Programming Now your UST 9000 system is properly installed and is ready or programming Carefully follow each step to become famil ar with the programming procedures The UST 9000 has een designed with the user in mind therefore once the unit 5 programmed the operation is simple rogramming Satellites and Channels ll programming should be done with the keys behind the loor on the front panel of the UST 9000 Turn on the power sure that Lock LED is off Press the Scan key for more than 2 second to rapidly scan the channels Press and hold the ast key The Antenna will begin moving to the east W hen q first satellite is received the TV scree
21. system may not be exactly the same as this diagram shows ree ee ere 7 NOTE Please refer to the cable chart on the preceding page when selecting cable for your system If you have cable runs longer than those indicated in the chart you should consult your dealer for proper cable type Actuator Connection Remove the rear cover of the actuator motor Inside the cas ing is a terminal strip Connect the appropriate wires to the connections on the strip Be sure to use the cables recom mended in the preceding chart Route the wire through the rubber seal and put the case back on the motor Be sure that the gasket is properly seated for a weather tight seal The actuator should then be connected to the 5 screw terminals on the rear of the UST 9000 Make sure that the proper con nections are made Any improper connection can cause per manent damage to your system Actuator Set Up The actuator inner tube should be retracted as far as possible leaving only the pivot socket exposed The satellite position display on the UST 9000 should read 000 If the display is not at 0 press the Clear Counter button on the back of the receiver Once the counter is at 0 press the East key until the counter displays 010 Press the Lower Limit button on the back of the receiver Move the antenna all the way to the east Press the West key to reverse it about 10 counts Press the Upper Limit button on the back of the unit NOTE The Up and
