Using passwords By using the Setup Utility program you can set passwords to prevent unauthorized access to your computer and data The following types of passwords are available e Power On Password Copyright Lenovo 2013 55 e Administrator Password e Hard Disk Password You do not have to set any passwords to use your computer However using passwords improves computing security If you decide to set any passwords read the following sections Password considerations A password can be any combination of up to 64 alphabetic and numeric characters For security reasons it is recommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised To set a strong password use the following guidelines e Have at least eight characters in length e Contain at least one alphabetic character and one numeric character e Setup Utility program and hard disk passwords are not case sensitive e Not be your name or your user name e Not be a common word or a common name e Be significantly different from your previous passwords Power on password When a power on password is set you are prompted to type a valid password each time the computer is turned on The computer cannot be used until the valid password is typed in Administrator password Setting an administrator password deters unauthorized users from changing configuration settings If you are responsible for maintaining the configuration settings of several computers you

Chapter 3 General information 31 Accessing Lenovo programs on the Windows 8 or Windows 8 1 operating system If your computer is preinstalled with the Windows 8 or Windows 8 1 operating system you can access Lenovo programs by doing one of the following On the Windows 8 operating system press the Windows key H to go to the Start screen Click a Lenovo program to launch it If you cannot find the program you need move the pointer to the bottom right corner of the screen to display the charms Then click the Search charm to search for the desired program On the Windows 8 1 operating system press the Windows key H to go to the Start screen Click a Lenovo program to launch it If you cannot find the program you need click the arrow icon 4 in the bottom left corner of the screen to go to the Apps screen Find the desired program in the apps list or search for it in the search box in the top right corner of the screen Depending on your computer model your computer supports some of the following Lenovo programs Fingerprint Software Lenovo Cloud Storage Lenovo Companion Lenovo Reach Lenovo Solution Center Lenovo Support Password Manager System Update Lenovo Support Web site Technical support information is available on the Lenovo Support Web site at http www lenovo com support This Web site is updated with the latest support information such as the following Drivers and software Diagnostic solutions Product and s

8. e If you are using a Windows operating system other than Windows 7 Windows 8 or Windows 8 1 go to http www lenovo com diags for the latest information on diagnostics for your computer To run the Lenovo Solution Center program see Lenovo programs on page 30 For additional information refer to the Lenovo Solution Center help system Note If you are unable to isolate and repair the problem yourself after running the program save and print the log files You will need the log files when you speak to a Lenovo technical support representative 54 ThinkCentre E93 Hardware Maintenance Manual Chapter 6 Using the Setup Utility program The Setup Utility program is used to view and change the configuration settings of your computer regardless of which operating system you are using However the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility program Starting the Setup Utility program To start the Setup Utility program do the following 1 Ensure that your computer is turned off 2 Repeatedly press and release the F1 key when turning on the computer When you hear multiple beeps or see a logo screen release the F1 key Note If a Power On Password or an Administrator Password has been set the Setup Utility program menu will not be displayed until you type the correct password For more information see Using passwords on page 55 When the POST detects that the hard disk drive

Not all FRUs are documented Handling static sensitive devices Do not open the static protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part Static electricity although harmless to you can seriously damage computer components and parts When you handle parts and other computer components take these precautions to avoid static electricity damage e Limit your movement Movement can cause static electricity to build up around you e Always handle parts and other computer components carefully Handle PCI cards memory modules system boards and microprocessors by the edges Never touch any exposed circuitry e Prevent others from touching the parts and other computer components e Before you replace a new part touch the static protective package containing the part to a metal expansion slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the computer for at least two seconds This reduces static electricity from the package and your body e When possible remove the new part from the static protective packaging and install it directly in the computer without setting the part down When this is not possible place the static protective package that the part came in on a smooth level surface and place the part on it e Do not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface Installing or replacing hardware This section provides in
