Turn on the fan if desired See step 8 on page 16 When you are finished exercising remove the key from the console See step 7 on page 17 HOW TO OPERATE THE PERSONAL TELEVISION IMPORTANT Before operating the television you must connect a 75 ohm CATV cable to the 75 ohm terminal on the treadmill See page 10 for instruc tions Follow the steps below to operate the television 1 Insert the key into the console See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 14 Press the On Off button to turn on the television When the key is inserted the television will auto matically turn on If you have turned off the televi sion turn it on by pressing the On Off button Press the Channel buttons to select the desired cable channel Note Complete this step only if you are using analog cable Otherwise change channels through an external source such as your cable box or your VCR 23 When the television is turned on the screen will show the last cable channel that was selected To select a different channel press the Channel but tons The selected cable channel number will ap pear on the screen for a few seconds Note The television is equipped with a channel memorizing function that allows you to go directly from the cur rent channel to the next channel saved in mem ory Before channels can be selected in this way they must be saved in the television s memory See HOW TO USE THE INFORMATION MODE on page 24 Pres

When you are finished exercising remove the key from the console See step 7 on page 17 HOW TO USE A CUSTOM PROGRAM 1 Insert the key into the console See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 14 2 Select a Custom program To select a Custom program press the Custom Programs CUSTOM PGMS button once or twice When a Custom program is selected the display will show the name of the program the maximum incline setting and the maximum speed setting of the program and the program time In addition a profile of the speed settings of the program will appear in the center of the display Note If the display shows a program time of three minutes see HOW TO CREATE A CUS TOM PROGRAM on page 19 Each Custom program is divided into one minute segments One speed setting and one incline set ting are programmed for each segment Press the Start button to start the program A moment after the button is pressed the tread mill will automatically adjust to the first speed and incline settings that you programmed previously Hold the handrails and begin walking 20 7 Follow your progress with the displays and the Workout Intensity bar The Custom program will function in the same way as a preset program see step 3 on pages 16 and 17 If desired you can redefine the program while using it To change the speed or incline setting for the current segment simply press the Speed or Incline buttons When the curren

Note To change the speed of the walking belt or the incline of the treadmill at any time during the program press the Speed or Incline buttons 18 The priority display will show the number of kilo meters still to be run When you have almost reached the distance goal the lower right corner of the display will flash and a series of tones will sound To stop the program at any time press the Stop button To restart the program press the Start but ton The walking belt will begin to move at 1 mph Adjust the speed of the walking belt as desired by pressing the Speed Control increase or decrease button or one of the numbered Speed buttons When you have completed a Distance program your total time will flash in the lower left corner of the display The console will then start a preset cool down program and the word COOL will ap pear in the priority display If the speed of the walking belt is greater than 5 mph the walking belt will slow to 5 mph for one minute After one minute the walking belt will slow to 4 mph for 2 minutes The walking belt will then slow to 3 mph for 2 minutes The walking belt will then slow to a stop Follow your progress with the displays and the Workout Intensity bar See step 6 on page 15 5 Measure your heart rate if desired See step 7 on page 15 G Turn on the fans if desired See step 8 on page 16 When you are finished exercising remove the key from the console See ste

Pulse program is selected the display will show the name of the program and the maximum target heart rate setting of the program In addi tion a profile of the target heart rate settings of the program will appear in the matrix The Pulse programs are each divided into 20 25 or 30 one minute segments One target heart rate setting is programmed for each segment Note 21 The same target heart rate setting may be pro grammed for two or more consecutive segments Adjust the maximum target heart rate setting if desired To adjust the maximum target heart rate setting press the Enter increase and decrease buttons To adjust the target heart rate setting quickly hold down one of the buttons Press the Start button to start the program A moment after the button is pressed the walking belt will begin to move Hold the handrails and begin walking The target heart rate setting for the first segment will be shown in the flashing Current Segment col umn of the matrix The target heart rate settings for the next several segments will be shown in the columns to the right When only three seconds re main in the first segment of the program both the Current Segment column and the column to the right will flash and a series of tones will sound When the first segment ends 2 target heart rate settings will move one column to the left The tar get heart rate setting for the second segment will then be shown in

Reed Switch 22 and the Magnet 18 on the left side of the Pulley 17 Turn the Pulley until the Magnet is aligned with the Reed Switch Make sure that the gap between the Magnet and the Reed Switch is about 1 8 lf necessary move the Reed Switch slightly using a slotted screwdriver Next reat tach the Motor Hood not shown making sure that the 3 4 Screws not shown are in the same holes from which they were removed Then run the treadmill for a few minutes to check for a correct speed reading PROBLEM The walking belt slows when walked on SOLUTION a Use only a single outlet surge suppressor that meets all of the specifications described on page 12 b If the walking belt is overtightened treadmill perfor mance may decrease and the walking belt may be come damaged Remove the key and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD Using the hex key turn both rear roller bolts counterclockwise 1 4 of a turn When the walking belt is properly tightened you should be able to lift each edge of the walking belt 3 to 4 inches off the walking platform Be careful to keep the walking belt centered Then plug in the power cord insert the key and run the treadmill for a few minutes Repeat until the walking belt is properly tightened If the walking belt still slows when walked on see the front cover of this manual PROBLEM The walking belt is off center or slips when walked on SOLUTION a If th

12. so the writing on top Battery x Y Cover Make sure that the rubber gasket is in place in the sensor unit Then lt I Battery Rubber reinsert the battery cover and turn it to the closed position 28 CONDITIONING GUIDELINES AWARNING Before beginning this or any exercise program consult your physi cian This is especially important for individu als over the age of 35 or individuals with pre existing health problems The pulse sensor is not a medical device Various factors including your movement may affect the accuracy of heart rate readings The sensor is intended only as an exercise aid in determining heart rate trends in general The following guidelines will help you to plan your ex ercise program For more detailed exercise informa tion obtain a reputable book or consult your physician EXERCISE INTENSITY Whether your goal is to burn fat or to strengthen your cardiovascular system the key to achieving the desired results is to exercise with the proper intensity The proper intensity level can be found by using your heart rate as a guide The chart below shows recom mended heart rates for fat burning and aerobic exercise HEART RATE TRAINING ZONES AEROBIC 165 155 145 MAX FAT BURN 145 138 130 FAT BURN 20 30 40 To find the proper heart rate for you first find your age near the bottom of the chart ages are rounded off to the nearest ten year
13. the contacts for about 15 seconds E Turn on the fan if desired To turn on the fan at low speed press the Fan button To turn on the fan at medium speed press the button a second time To turn on the fan at high speed press the button a third time To turn off the fan press the Fan button again Note If the fan is on when the walking belt stops the fan will automatically turn off after a few minutes When you are finished exercising remove the key Step onto the foot rails press the Stop button and adjust the incline of the treadmill to the lowest set ting The incline must be at the lowest setting when the treadmill is folded to the storage posi tion or the treadmill will become damaged Next remove the key from the console and put it in a se cure place When you are finished using the treadmill switch the reset off circuit breaker to the off position and unplug the power cord 16 HOW TO USE A PRESET PROGRAM Insert the key into the console See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 14 Select a preset program To select a preset program press the Weight Loss Programs WT LOSS PGMS button the Fitness Programs FITNESS PGMS button or the Incline Programs INCLINE PGMS button re peatedly When a preset program is selected the display will show the program number the maximum in cline setting and the maximum speed setting of the program and the program time In addition a profile of the s
14. the circuit breaker is in the reset position Reset Position ES Stand on the foot rails of the tread mill Find the clip attached to the key and slide the clip securely onto the waistband of your clothes Next in sert the key into the console After a moment the display will light and after a few seconds the tele vision will turn on Important In an emergency situation the key can be pulled from the con sole causing the walking belt to slow to a stop Test the clip by carefully taking a few steps backward if the key is not pulled from the console adjust the position of the clip HOW TO USE THE MANUAL MODE 1 Insert the key into the console See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on this page BI Enter your weight if desired If you enter your weight into the con sole the console will display a more accu rate estimate of the number of calories that you burn To enter your weight press the Enter in crease and decrease buttons on the right side of the console repeatedly Note Once you have en tered your weight it will be saved in memory E Select the manual mode 14 Each time the key is inserted the manual mode will be selected If you have selected a program press any of the program buttons repeatedly until a track appears in the display Start the walking belt and adjust the speed To start the walking belt press the Start button the Speed Control increase button or
15. the display the demo mode is selected This mode is intended to be used only when a treadmill is displayed in a store When the demo mode is selected the power cord can be plugged in the key can be removed from the console and the dis plays on the console will automatically light in a preset sequence The buttons on the console will not function If a d appears in the display when the information mode is selected press the Speed decrease button 2 Press the On Off button and adjust the brightness contrast color sharpness and or hue of the television When the On Off button is pressed the brightness level indicator will appear on the television screen Press the Volume buttons to adjust the brightness setting if desired Next press the Channel buttons until the contrast color sharpness or hue level indicator appears Adjust the settings if desired by pressing the Volume buttons 24 Press the On Off button again and add or delete cable channels Note Complete this step only if you are using analog cable After all valid cable channels available in your area have been saved into the television s mem ory see step 5 on this page you can manually add channels or delete unwanted channels To add or delete a cable channel first press the Channel buttons until the desired channel number appears on the screen Then press the Volume increase button to add the channel or the Volume decrease button to

SS PGMS 1956 1497 1266 Y Queue CUSTOM PGMS INCLINE PGMS 88 WORKOUT INTENSITY se gt o FEATURES OF THE CONSOLE The treadmill console offers an impressive array of features designed to make your workouts more effec tive and enjoyable When the manual mode of the con sole is selected the speed and incline of the treadmill can be changed with the touch of a button As you ex ercise the console will display continuous exercise feedback You can even measure your heart rate using the handgrip pulse sensor or the chest pulse sensor In addition the console features twelve preset pro grams four Weight Loss programs four Fitness pro grams and four Incline programs Each program auto matically controls the speed and incline of the treadmill as it guides you through an effective workout You can even create Custom programs and save them for future use The console also offers four Distance programs 2K 7K and 10K that count down from 2 5 7 or 10 kilometers while you complete an endurance run The console also offers four Pulse programs that con trol the speed and incline of the treadmill to help you 13 Digital
18. amaged by sudden voltage changes in your home s power Voltage surges spikes and noise interference can result from weather conditions or from other appliances being turned on or off To decrease the possibility of your treadmill being damaged always use a surge suppressor with your treadmill see drawing 1 at the right To purchase a surge suppressor see your local HealthRider dealer or call the toll free telephone number on the front cover of this man ual and order part number 146148 or see your local electronics store Use only a single outlet surge suppressor that is UL 1449 listed as a transient voltage surge sup pressor TVSS The surge suppressor must have a UL suppressed voltage rating of 400 volts or less and a minimum surge dissipation of 450 joules The surge suppressor must be electrically rated for 120 volts AC and 15 amps There must be a moni toring light on the surge suppressor to indicate whether it is functioning properly Failure to use a properly functioning surge suppressor could result in damage to the control system of the treadmill If the control system is damaged the walking belt may change speed accelerate or stop unexpect edly which may result in a fall and serious injury This product must be grounded If it should malfunc tion or break down grounding provides a path of least resistance for electric current to reduce the risk of elec 12 tric shock This product is equipped with a cord ha

20. ched 6 Attach the console assembly to the Uprights 85 with four Console Bolts 72 and four 3 8 Star Washers 71 only one side is shown Start all four Console Bolts before tightening any of them Console Assembly 7 Note the location of the 75 ohm terminal near the power cord For the television to operate properly a 75 ohm CATV cable must be connected to the 75 ohm terminal see page 10 Terminal 8 Make sure that all parts are properly tightened before you use the treadmill Keep the included hex key in a secure place the hex key is used to adjust the walking belt see page 27 To protect the floor or carpet from damage place a mat under the treadmill Before operating the television you must connect a 75 ohm CATV cable to the 75 ohm terminal on the treadmill Note Use a CATV cable to connect to an external source such as a cable box analog cable satellite TV box or VCR No CATV cable is included HOW TO CONNECT A 75 OHM CATV CABLE HOW TO CONNECT AN EXTERNAL SOURCE USING A CATV CABLE 1 Connect a 75 ohm CATV cable to the 75 75 Ohm CATV Cable 1 Connect one end of a 75 ohm CATV cable to the 75 ohm terminal on the ohm output jack on your external source treadmill frame see step 7 on page 9 2 Plug in the power cord of your external source See 75 Ohm Terminal your external source s user s manual for proper grounding instructions 3 Connect the 75 ohm CATV cable to the 75 o
21. delete the channel Continue this process until you have added all desired channels and deleted all unwanted channels Press the On Off button again and select a cable connection if necessary If you have connected a CATV cable one of the three Cable settings should be selected try all three Cable settings if necessary to find the opti mal setting Press the Volume increase button to select the Standard Cable setting the Channel decrease button to select the Cable IRC setting or the Channel increase button to select the Cable HRC setting Note The setting that you select will not appear on the screen Press the On Off button again and save cable channels into the television s memory When the On Off button is pressed the television will begin scanning all of the cable channels avail able in your area When no cable signal is de tected on a channel the channel will be skipped When a cable signal is detected the channel will be saved into memory and the next channel will be selected This process will continue until the highest channel is reached Do not remove the key while the television is scanning channels Note If you are viewing channels through an ex ternal source such as a cable box or a VCR the television will save only the channel used by the external source When you are finished using the information mode remove the key To exit the information mode at any time except while the television is scanning c
22. e walking belt is off center remove the key and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD If the walking belt has shifted to the left use the hex key to turn the left rear roller bolt clockwise 1 2 of a turn if the walk ing belt has shifted to the right turn the left rear roller bolt counterclockwise 1 2 of a turn Be careful not to overtighten the walking belt Plug in the power cord insert the key and run the treadmill for a few minutes Repeat until the walking belt is centered b If the walking belt slips when walked on first remove the key and UNPLUG THE POWER CORD Using the hex key turn both rear roller bolts clockwise 1 4 of a turn When the walking belt is correctly tightened you should be able to lift each edge of the walking belt 3 to 4 inches off the walking platform Be careful to keep the walking belt centered Then plug in the power cord insert the key and carefully walk on the treadmill for a few minutes Repeat until the walking belt is properly tightened 27 PROBLEM The incline of the treadmill does not change correctly SOLUTION a With the key in the console press one of the Incline buttons While the incline is changing re move the key After a few seconds re insert the key The treadmill will automatically rise to the maximum incline level and then return to the minimum level This will recalibrate the incline system PROBLEM Television reception is poor SOLUTION a Check for the problems listed below and follow t

30. hm ter minal on the treadmill frame 10 HOW TO USE THE CHEST PULSE SENSOR HOW TO PUT ON THE CHEST PULSE SENSOR The chest pulse sensor consists of two components the chest strap and the sensor unit see the drawing below Insert the tab on one end of the chest strap into the hole in one end of the sensor unit as shown in the inset drawing Press the end of the sensor unit under the buckle on the chest strap The tab should be flush with the front of the sensor unit 5 2 Sensor Unit Next wrap the chest pulse sensor around your chest and attach the other end of the chest strap to the sensor unit Adjust the length of the chest strap if neces sary The chest pulse sensor should be under your clothes tight against your skin and as high under the pectoral muscles or breasts as is comfortable Make sure that the logo on the sensor unit is facing forward and is right side up Next pull the sensor unit away from your body a few inches and locate the two electrode areas on the inner side the electrode areas are covered by shallow ridges Using saline solution such as saliva or contact lens solution wet both electrode areas Return the sensor unit to a position against your chest CHEST PULSE SENSOR CARE AND MAINTENANCE Thoroughly dry the chest pulse sensor after each use The chest pulse sensor is activated when the electrode areas are wetted and the heart rate monitor is put on the chest pulse sensor shuts of

43. s Next find the three numbers above your age The three numbers define your train ing zone The lower two numbers are recommended heart rates for fat burning the higher number is the recommended heart rate for aerobic exercise Fat Burning To burn fat effectively you must exercise at a relatively low intensity level for a sustained period of time During the first few minutes of exercise your body uses easily accessible carbohydrate calories for en ergy Only after the first few minutes does your body begin to use stored for energy If your goal is to burn fat adjust the speed and incline of the tread mill until your heart rate is near the lowest number in your training zone For maximum fat burning adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until your heart rate is near the middle number in your training zone Aerobic Exercise If your goal is to strengthen your cardiovascular sys tem your exercise must be aerobic Aerobic exercise is activity that requires large amounts of oxygen for prolonged periods of time This increases the demand on the heart to pump blood to the muscles and on the lungs to oxygenate the blood For aerobic exercise adjust the speed and incline of the treadmill until your heart rate is near the highest number in your training zone WORKOUT GUIDELINES Each workout should include the following three parts A Warm up Start each workout with 5 to 10 minutes of s

46. t segment ends the new setting will be saved in memory To in crease the length of the program first wait until the program ends Then press the Start button and program speed and incline settings for as many ad ditional segments as desired Custom programs can have up to 40 segments When you have added as many segments as desired press the Stop button twice To decrease the length of the program press the Stop button twice at any time before the program ends Measure your heart rate if desired See step 7 on page 15 Turn on the fan if desired See step 8 on page 16 When you are finished exercising remove the key from the console See step 7 on page 17 HOW TO USE A PULSE PROGRAM A CAUTION you have heart prob lems or if you are over 60 years of age and have been inactive do not use the Pulse pro grams If you are taking medication regularly consult your physician to find whether the medication will affect your exercise heart rate Follow the steps below to use a Pulse program Note You must wear the chest pulse sensor to use a Pulse program While using the chest pulse sensor do not use the handgrip pulse sensor Put on the chest pulse sensor See HOW TO PUT ON THE CHEST PULSE SENSOR on page 11 2 Insert the key into the console See HOW TO TURN ON THE POWER on page 14 E Select a Pulse program To select a Pulse program press the Pulse Programs PULSE PGMS button repeatedly When a
47. the flashing Current Segment column During the program the console will regularly compare your heart rate to the target heart rate setting If your heart rate is too far below or above the target heart rate setting for the current seg ment the speed of the walking belt will automati cally increase or decrease to bring your heart rate closer to the target heart rate setting If the speed or incline setting is too high or too low at any time during the program you can adjust the setting with the Speed or Incline buttons However when the console compares your heart rate to the target heart rate setting the speed of the treadmill may automatically change to bring your heart rate closer to the target heart rate setting If your pulse is not detected during the program the letters PLS will flash in the display and the speed of the treadmill may automatically decrease lf this occurs see CHEST PULSE SEN SOR TROUBLESHOOTING on page 11 To stop the program at any time press the Stop button To restart the program press the Start but ton or the Speed Control increase button The walking belt will begin to move at 1 mph When the console compares your heart rate to the target heart rate setting the speed and or incline of the treadmill may automatically change to bring your heart rate closer to the target heart rate setting 22 Follow your progress with the displays and the Workout Intensity bar See step 6 on page 15
