7. 7 Reconnect all external cables and the power cord 8 Turn on your computer www gateway com Chapter 6 Troubleshooting m Troubleshooting typical hardware and software problems 67 Safety guidelines While troubleshooting your computer follow these safety guidelines Never remove your computer case cover while your computer isturned on and while the modem cable and the power cord are connected M ake sure that you are correctly grounded before accessing internal components For more information about preventing damage from static electricity see Preventing static electricity discharge on page 53 Warning To avoid bodily injury do not attempt to troubleshoot your computer problem if D Power cords or plugs are damaged Liquid has been spilled into your computer Your computer was dropped The case was damaged Instead unplug your computer and contact a qualified computer technician First steps If you have problems with your computer try these things first 68 Make sure that the AC power adapter is connected to your computer and an AC outlet and that the AC outlet is supplying power If you use a power strip or surge protector make sure that it is turned on If a peripheral device such as a keyboard or mouse does not work make sure that all connections are secure Make sure that your hard drive is not full If an error message appears on the screen write down the exact message

Important Your computer has a built in variable speed fan In addition your computer uses a powerful processor which produces heat Both the n System fan and processor can run at different speeds at times to ensure proper system cooling You may notice an increase in the fan noise when the fan is running at high speed and a decrease in the fan noise when it switches to normal speed 4 Turn on any peripheral devices such as printers or scanners and see the documentation that came with the device for setup instructions Waking up your computer When you have not used your computer for several minutes or have not turned off your computer it may enter a power saving mode called Standby While in Standby the power indicator flashes If your computer isin Standby mode movethe mouse or pressthe power button to wake it up Tips amp Tricks For more information about changing the power button mode see Changing Power Saving Settings in Using Your Computer which has ey been included on your hard drive To access this guide click Start All Programs then click Gateway Documentation 26 Turning off your computer Warning When you turn off your computer certain components in the power supply and system board remain energized In order to remove all D electrical power from your computer unplug the power cord and modem cable from the wall outlets We recommend disconnecting the power cord and modem cable when your computer will no
