1. WARNING Wear protective gloves when handling chain The chain is sharp and can cut you even when it is not moving It is normal for a new chain to stretch during the first 15 minutes of operation You should re check your chain tension frequently and adjust the chain tension as required See CHAIN TEN SION section Replace the old chain when it becomes worn or damaged Use only the Low Kickback replace ment chain specified in the repair parts list TO REPLACE CHAIN 1 Disconnect pruner from power source 2 Remove bar clamp nut 3 Remove bar clamp 4 Turn adjusting screw by hand counter clockwise until adjusting pin just touches the stop 5 Slide guide bar behind sprocket until guide bar stops against sprocket 6 Remove the old chain 7 Carefully remove new chain from pack age Hold chain with the drive links as shown CUTTERS MUST FACE IN DIRECTION OF ROTATION Depth Gauge 8 Place chain over sprocket fitting the drive links in the sprocket 9 Fit bottom of drive links between the teeth in the sprocket in the nose of the guide bar 10 Fit chain drive links into bar groove 11 Pull guide bar forward until chain is snug in guide bar groove Ensure all drive links are in the bar groove 12 Now install bar clamp making sure the adjusting pin is positioned in the lower hole in the guide bar 13 Install bar clamp nut and finger tighten only Do not tighten any further at this poin

DOUBLE INSULATION CONSTRUCTION This unit is double insulated to help protect against electric shock Double insulation construction consists of two separate layers of electrical insulation instead of grounding Tools built with this insulation system are not intended to be grounded No grounding means is provided on this unit nor should a means of grounding be added to this unit As a result the extension cord used with your unit can be plugged into any standard 120 volt electrical outlet Safety precautions must be observed when operating any electrical tool The double insulation system only provides added protection against injury resulting from an internal electrical insulation failure AWARNING All electrical repairs to this unit including hous ing switch motor etc must be diagnosed and repaired by qualified service personnel Re placement parts for a double insulated ap pliance must be recommended by the manufac turer A double insulated appliance is marked with the words double insulation or double in sulated The symbol square within a square o may also be marked on the appliance Fail ure to have the unit repaired by qualified service personnel can cause the double insulation construction to become ineffective and result in serious injury PRUNER SAFETY Do not operate a pruner with one hand Seri ous injury to the operator helpers bystanders or any combination of these persons may re

SION CORD in the OPERATION section Do not use multiple cords Keep the extension cord clear of operator and obstacles at all times Position cord so that it will not be caught on branches Tie cord to cord retainer and connect to re cessed plug as shown in this manual to pre vent damage to unit and or extension cord and to reduce the possibility of the extension cord disconnecting from the unit during op eration See ATTACH THE EXTENSION CORD TO YOUR TRIMMER in the OPERA TION section Do not attempt to repair unit Inspect the insu lation and connectors on the powerhead and extension cord before each use If there is any damage do not use until damage is re paired by your authorized service dealer Do not use the unit if the switch does not turn the unit on and off properly Repairs to the switch must be made by your autho rized service dealer Avoid unintentional starting of the unit Nev er carry unit with your finger on the switch Be sure the switch is in the OFF position and never touch the switch when connect ing extension cord Avoid any body contact with any grounded conductor such as metal fences or pipes to avoid the possibility of electric shock Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter GFCI protection should be provided on circuit or outlet to be used Receptacles are avail able having built in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety Stop the motor immediately if you are ap proached
4. sult from one handed operation A pruner is intended for two handed use Keep all parts of your body away from the chain when unit is running Do not operate pruner from a ladder or in a tree Do not use a pruner to cut down trees or any portion of the tree trunk Only use for pruning limbs or branches overhead not greater than 6 inches 15 cm in diameter Never stand under the limb you are pruning Always position yourself out of the path of falling debris Do not cut small brush and saplings with the pruner Slender matter may catch in the chain and be whipped toward you pulling you off balance Make sure the chain will not make contact with any object while starting the unit Never try to start the unit when the guide bar is ina cut Do not force pruner It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was intended Do not put pressure on the pruner at the end ofthe cut Applying pressure can cause you to lose control when the cut is completed Do not run the unit at high speed when not pruning Use the right tool cut wood only Don t use pruner for purpose not intended for example don t use pruner for cutting plastic masonry non wood building materials etc If you strike or become entangled with a for eign object stop the unit immediately and check for damage Have any damage re paired by an authorized service dealer be fore attempting further operations Do not operate a pruner th
5. caution when re entering a previous cut Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of the bar plunge cuts Watch for shifting of wood or other forces that could close a cut and pinch or fall into chain Use the Reduced Kickback Guide Bar and Low Kickback Chain specified for your unit MAINTAIN CONTROL Keep a good firm grip on the pruner with both hands when the unit is running and don t let go A firm grip will help you reduce kickback and maintain control Keep the fin gers of your left hand encircling and your left thumb under the assist handle Keep your right hand completely around the trig ger handle whether your are right handed or left handed Stand with your weight evenly balanced on both feet Stand slightly to the left side of the pruner to keep your body from being in a direct line with the cutting chain KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES WARNING The following features are included on your pruner to help reducethe hazard of kickback however such features will not totally eliminate this danger As a pruner user do not rely only on safety de vices You must follow all safety precautions instructions and maintenance in this manual to help avoid kickback and other forces which can result in serious injury e Reduced Kickback Guide Bar designed with a small radius tip which reduces the size of the kickback danger zone on the bar tip Reduced Kickback Symmetrical Guide Bar ee ay Q y Small Rad
6. for jobs explained in this manual or manuals for optional attachments MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT IN GOOD WORKING ORDER Have all service performed by a qualified service dealer with the exception of the items listed in the maintenance section of this manual Maintain unit according to recommended procedures Make certain the chain and or cutting head stops moving when trigger switch is re leased When using the trimmer attachment keep cutting line at proper length Use only 0 080 2 mm diameter Poulan brand line Never use wire rope string etc Install required shield properly before using the trimmer attachment Use only specified trimmer head and spool make sure it is properly installed and securely fastened Never modify your unit in any way Keep the handles dry clean and free from oil and grease Keep oil cap screws and fasteners se curely tightened Keep chain sharp and clean for better and safer performance Follow instructions for lubricating and chang ing accessories and for changing trimmer line Check for damaged parts Before further use of the unit a part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will op erate properly and perform its intended function Check for alignment of moving parts binding of moving parts breakage of parts mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation Any part that is damaged should be properly repaired or replaced by an author

8. posts etc which can damage the trimmer head become entangled in the line or be thrown causing a serious hazard e The tip of the line does the cutting You will achieve the best performance and mini mum line wear by not crowding the line into the cutting area The right and wrong ways are shown below Tip of the Line Does The Cutting Line Crowded Into Work Area e The line will easily remove grass and weeds from around walls fences trees and flower beds but it also can cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences e For trimming or scalping use less than full throttle to increase line life and decrease head wear especially e During light duty cutting e Near objects around which the line can wrap such as small posts trees or fence wire e For mowing or sweeping use full throttle for a good clean job TRIMMING Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 inches 8 cm above the ground and at an angle Allow only the tip of the line to make contact Do not force trimmer line into work area Trimming 3 inches 8 cm FR above ground 3 j SCALPING The scalping technique re moves unwanted vegetation down to the ground Hold the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 in 8 cm above the ground and at an angle Allow the tip of the line to strike the ground around trees posts monuments etc This technique increases line wear MOWING Your trimmer is ideal for mowing in places co
9. the pruner to move in the opposite direction of the chain rotation The pruner is driven straight back toward the operator Pull In can occur when the moving chain contacts a foreign object in the wood in the cut along the bottom of the guide bar and the chain is suddenly stopped This sudden stop ping pulls the pruner forward and away from the operator and could easily cause the oper ator to lose control of the pruner REDUCE THE CHANCE OF KICKBACK Recognize that kickback can happen With abasic understanding of kickback you can reduce the element of surprise which con tributes to accidents Never let the moving chain contact any ob ject at the tip of the guide bar Keep the working area free from obstructions such as other trees branches rocks stumps etc Eliminate or avoid any obstruction that your chain could hit while you are cutting When cutting a branch do not let the guide bar contact branch or other objects around it Keep your chain sharp and properly ten sioned A loose or dull chain can increase the chance of kickback occurring Follow manufacturer s chain sharpening and maintenance instructions Check tension at regular intervals but never with the motor running Make sure the bar clamp nut is se curely tightened after tensioning the chain Begin and continue cutting at full speed If the chainis moving at aslower speed there is greater chance of kickback occurring e Cut one branch at a time Use extreme
10. to rest on your left shoulder Make sure the danger sign is centered on your back and the hook is to the right side of your waist NOTE A one half twist is built in the shoul der strap to allow the strap to rest flat on the shoulder 3 Adjust the strap allowing the hook to be about 3 6 inches 8 15 cm below the waist 4 Fasten the strap hook to the clamp lo cated between the trigger handle and the assist handle and lift the tool to the operat ing position NOTE It may be necessary to relocate the shoulder strap clamp on the shaft for proper balancing of unit TO RELOCATE SHOULDER STRAP CLAMP 1 Loosen and remove both clamp screws 2 Place the upper shoulder strap clamp over the upper shaft 3 Position the lower shoulder strap clamp under the upper shaft and align the upper and lower clamp screw holes Upper Shoulder Strap Clamp Fa POWERHEAD END a Pa Lower Shoulder Strap Clamp ATTACHMENT END Screws 4 Insert two screws into the screw holes 5 Secure shoulder strap clamp by tighten ing screws with a hex wrench ADJUSTING THE ASSIST HANDLE A WARNING When adjusting the assist handle during pruner use be sure it remains be tween the coupler and the lower arrow closest to coupler on the safety label to ensure proper balancing of unit When adjusting the assist handle during use of optional attach ments it must be repositioned between the trig ger switch and the m uppe

19. at is damaged improperly adjusted or not completely and securely assembled Always replace bar and chain immediately if it becomes dam aged broken or is otherwise removed Always stop the unit when work is delayed or when walking from one cutting location to another Stop the motor and make sure chain has stopped moving before setting the unit down Inspect cords periodically and if damaged have repaired by an authorized service dealer Use only in daylight or good artificial light KICKBACK WARNING Avoid kickback which can result in serious injury Kickback is the backward upward or sudden forward motion of the guide bar occurring when the chain near the upper tip of the guide bar contacts any object such as a log or branch or when the wood closes in and pinches the chain in the cut Contacting a foreign object in the wood can also result in loss of control e Rotational Kickback can occur when the moving chain contacts an object at the upper tip of the guide bar This contact can cause the chain to dig into the object which stops the chain for an instant The result is a light ning fast reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator e Pinch Kickback can occur when the wood closes in and pinches the moving chain in the cutalong the top of the guide bar and the chain is suddenly stopped This sudden stopping of the chain results in a reversal of the chain force used to cut wood and causes

21. eck chain tension each time you use your unit 1 Use the screwdriver end of the chain ad justment tool bar tool to move chain around guide bar to ensure kinks do not exist The chain should rotate freely Chain Adjustment Tool 2 Loosen bar clamp nut until it is finger tight against the bar clamp the surfaces being swept and move the tool from side to side Sw ans E Bar clamp nut 3 Turn adjusting screw clockwise until chain solidly contacts bottom of guide bar rail Then turn adjusting screw an addi tional 1 4 turn Adjusting Screw 1 4 Turn De Using bar tool roll chain around guide bar to ensure all links are in bar groove Lift up tip of guide bar to check for sag Release tip of guide bar then turn adjust ing screw 1 4 turn clockwise Repeat until sag does not exist 6 While lifting tip of guide bar tighten bar clamp nut securely with the bar tool us 7 Use the screwdriver end of the bar tool to move chain around guide bar 8 If chain does not rotate it is too tight Slightly loosen bar clamp nut and loosen chain by turning the adjusting screw 1 4 turn counterclockwise Retighten bar clamp nut 9 If chain is too loose it will sag below the guide bar and needs to be tightened fol lowing above procedure A WARNING DO NOT operate the pruner if the chain is loose If the pruner is oper ated with a loose chain the chain could jump off the guide bar and result in serious inj
