2. bustion and ventilation Exhaust fans fireplaces clothes dryers and fuel burning appliances draw air from the house to operate You must provide ad equate fresh air for these appliances This will insure proper venting of vented fuel burning appliances PROVIDING ADEQUATE VENTILATION The following is exerpts from National Fuel Gas Code NFPA 54 ANSI Z223 1 Section 5 3 Air for Combustion and Ventilation All spaces in homes fall into one of the three following ventilation classifications 1 Unusually Tight Construction 2 Uncon fined Space 3 Confined Space The information on pages 4 and 5 will help you classify your space and provide ad equate ventilation Unusually Tight Construction The air that leaks around doors and win dows may provide enough fresh air for combustion and ventilation However in buildings of unusually tight construction you must provide additional fresh air Unusually tight construction is de fined as construction where a walls and ceilings exposed to the outside atmosphere have a continuous water vapor re tarder with a rating of one perm 6 x 10 kg per pa sec m or less with openings gasketed or sealed and b weather stripping has been added on openable windows and doors and c caulking or sealants are ap plied to areas such as joints around window and door frames between sole plates and floors between wall ceil ing joints between wall panels at penetrations for plum

4. above 2 Make sure manual shutoff valve is fully open 3 Press in and turn control knob clock wise Zw to the OFF position SS T Ignitor Button Figure 28 Control Knob and Ignitor Button Location Control Knob Continued UNVENTED NATURAL GAS LOG HEATER OPERATING HEATER Manually Controlled Models Continued 4 Wait five 5 minutes to clear out any gas Then smell for gas including near the floor If you smell gas STOP Follow B in the safety in formation above If you don t smell gas go to the next step 5 Press in control knob and turn coun terclockwise tothe PILOT po sition Keep control knob pressed in for five 5 seconds see Figure 28 page 15 Note You may be running this heater for the first time after hook ing up to gas supply If so the con trol knob may need to be pressed in for 30 seconds This will allow air to bleed from the gas system 6 With control knob pressed in press and release ignitor button This will light pilot The pilot is attached to the front burner If needed keep press ing ignitor button until pilot lights Note If pilot does not light contact a qualified service person or gas sup plier for repairs Until repairs are made light pilot with match To light pilot with match see Manual Light ing Procedure column 2 7 Keep control knob pressed in for 30 seconds after lighting pilot After 30 seconds release

10. technician or gas supplier Force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion D Do not use this appliance if any part has been under water Immediately call a qualified service technician to inspect the appliance and to replace any part of the control system and any gas control which has been un der water EH LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS A WARNING If fireplace has glass doors never operate this heater with glass doors closed If you op erate heater with doors closed heat buildup inside fireplace will cause glass to burst Also if fireplace opening has vents at the bottom you must open the vents before operating heater You must operate this heater with afireplace screenin place Make sure fireplace screen is closed before running heater NOTICE During initial operation of new heater burning logs will give off a paper burning smell Orange flame will also be present Open damper or window to vent smell This will only last a few hours Note Homeowners generally prefer to operate their heater with the chim ney damper closed This will put all the heat into the room Howeverthere may be times you will desire the full flames of the High heat setting but will find the heat output excessive You can open the chimney damper if you have one fully or partially to release some of the heat WARNING Damper handle will be hot if heater has been running 1 STOP Read the safety information

Hr used The space in the above example is a con fined space because the actual Btu Hr used is more than the maximum Btu Hr the space can support You must provide additional fresh air Your options are as follows A Rework worksheet adding the space of an adjoining room If the extra space provides an unconfined space remove door to adjoining room or add ventila tion grills between rooms See Ventila tion Air From Inside Building B Vent room directly to the outdoors See Ventilation Air From Outdoors C Install a lower Btu Hr heater if lower Btu Hr size makes room unconfined If the actual Btu Hr used is less than the maximum Btu Hr the space can support the spaceis an unconfined space You will need no additional fresh air ventilation WARNING Ifthearea in which the heater may be operated is smaller than that defined as an unconfined space provide ad equate combustion and ventila tion air by one of the methods described in the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223 1 1992 Section 5 3 103426 18 24 AND 30 MODELS VENTILATION AIR Ventilation Air From Inside Building This fresh air would come from an adjoining unconfined space When ventilating to an adjoining unconfined space you must provide two permanent openings one within 12 of the ceiling and one within 12 oftheflooron the wall connecting the two spaces see options 1 and 2 Figure 3 You can also remove door into adjoining roo

53. y areas Before installing in a solid fuel burn ing fireplace the chimney flue and fire box must be cleaned of soot creosote ashes and loose paint by a qualified chimney cleaner Creosote will ignite if highly heated Inspect chimney flue for damage If damaged operate heater with flue damper closed If fireplace has glass doors never op erate this heater with glass doors closed If you operate heater with doors closed heat buildup inside fireplace will cause glass to burst Also if fireplace open ing has vents at the bottom you must open the vents before operating heater You must operate this heater with a fire place screen in place Make sure fire place screen is closed before running heater This log heater is designed to be smoke less If logs ever appear to smoke turn off heater and call a qualified service person Note During initial operation slight smoking may occur due to log curing and heater burning manufactur ing residues Do not allow fans to blow directly into the fireplace Avoid any drafts that al ter burner flame patterns Ceiling fans 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 may create drafts that alter burner flame patterns Altered burner patterns can cause sooting Do not use a blower insert heat ex changer insert or other accessory not approved for use with this heater This heater needs fresh outside air ven tilation to run properly This heater
