1. 1 RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS FOR ALARMS e Locate the first alarm in the immediate area of the bedrooms Try to protect the exit path as the bedrooms are usually farthest from the exit If more than one sleeping area exists locate additional alarms in each sleeping area e Locate additional alarms to protect any stairway as stairways act like chimneys for smoke and heat e Locate at least one alarm on every floor level e Locate an alarm in every bedroom where a smoker sleeps e Locate an alarm in every room where electrical appliances are operated i e portable heaters or humidifiers e Locate an alarm in every room where someone sleeps with the door closed The closed door may prevent the alarm from waking the sleeper e Smoke heat and combustion products rise to the ceiling and spread horizontally Mounting the smoke alarm on the ceiling in the center of the room places it closest o all points in the room Ceiling mounting is preferred in ordinary residential con struction e For mobile home installation select locations carefully to avoid thermal barriers that may form at the ceiling For more details see MOBILE HOME INSTALLATION below e When mounting an alarm on the ceiling locate it at a minimum of 4 10 cm from he side wall and 2 feet 60 96 cm from any inside corner see Diagram A e When mounting the alarm on the wall it is best to use an inside wall with the top edge of the alarm at a minimum of 42. 10 cm and a maximum of 12 30 5 cm below the ceiling and at least 2 feet 61 cm from any inside corner see Diagram A e Put smoke alarms at both ends of a bedroom hallway or large room if the hallway or room is more than 30 feet 9 1 m long 100m CEILING MINIMUM 4 SINGLE FLOOR PLAN KITCHEN BEDROOM BEDROOM A A Oj O N 10 cm MINIMUM O O A LIVING ROOM BEDROOM MULTIPLE FLOOR PLAN f NEVER HERE BEST HERE 12 30 5cm MAXIMUM ACCEPTABLE HERE gt gt SIDE DIAGRAM A A WAGE sa e Smoke Alarms for Minimum Protection O Smoke Alarms for Additional Protection A Smoke Alarms with HUSH Control DIAGRAM B MOBILE HOME INSTALLATION Mobile homes built in the past five to seven years have been designed to be energy efficient Install smoke alarms as recommended above refer to RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS and Diagram A In mobile homes that are not well insulated compared to present standards extreme heat or cold can be transferred from the outside to the inside through poorly insulated walls and roof This may create a thermal barrier which can prevent the smoke from reaching an alarm mounted on the ceiling In such units install the smoke alarm on an inside wall with the top edge of the alarm at a minimum of 4 10 cm and a maxi mum of 12 30 5 cm below the ceiling see Diagram A If you are not sure about the insulation in your mobile home or if you notice t

4. 85db pulsating alarm until the air is cleared FLASHING LED LIGHT This smoke alarm is equipped with a flashing red indicator ight The light is located under the test button and will flash every 30 40 seconds o indicate that the smoke alarm is receiving power SMOKE SENSING CHAMBER OPERATION This alarm will chirp if any of the com ponents in the smoke sensing chamber fail This chirp will occur between the flashes of the red LED indicator light If the chirp occurs at the same time as the red LED lash see Section 6 for low battery information TESTING Test by pushing the test button on the cover and holding it down for a min imum of 5 seconds This will sound the alarm if the electronic circuitry horn and bat ery are working If no alarm sounds the unit has defective batteries or other failure You can also test the alarm by blowing smoke into it TEST THE ALARM WEEKLY TO ENSURE PROPER OPERATION Erratic or low sound coming from your alarm may indicate a defective alarm and it should be returned for service see Section 11 5 NUISANCE ALARMS Smoke alarms are designed to minimize nuisance alarms Cigarette smoke will not normally set off the alarm unless the smoke is blown directly into the alarm Combustion particles from cooking may set off the alarm if the alarm is located close to the cooking area Large quantities of combustible particles are generated from spills or when broiling Using the fan on a ra
5. see Figure 4 until it locks in place 7 USING TAMPER RESIST LOCKING PIN To make your smoke alarm somewhat tamper resistant a locking pin has been provided in the bag with the screws and anchors Using this pin will deter children and others from removing the alarm from the mounting plate To use the pin insert it into the hole in the side of the alarm after the alarm has been Tamper Beast Yb installed on the mounting plate see Figure 5 Locking Pin NOTE THE TAMPER RESIST PIN WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE BATTERY USE A LONG NOSE PLIERS TO PULL THE PIN OUT OF THE HOLE IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO REMOVE THE ALARM FROM THE MOUNTING PLATE FIGURE 5 8 After installation test your alarm by depressing and holding down the test button for several seconds or by blowing smoke into the alarm This should sound the alarm CAUTION EARLY WARNING FIRE DETECTION IS BEST ACHIEVED BY THE INSTALLATION OF FIRE DETECTION EQUIPMENT IN ALL ROOMS AND AREAS OF THE HOUSEHOLD AS FOLLOWS A SMOKE ALARM INSTALLED IN EACH SEPARATE SLEEPING AREA IN THE VICINITY OF BUT OUTSIDE OF THE BEDROOM AND HEAT OR SMOKE ALARMS IN THE LIVING ROOM DINING ROOM KITCHEN HALLWAYS ATTIC FURNACE ROOM CLOSETS UTILITY STORAGE ROOM BASEMENT AND ATTACHED GARAGE 4 OPERATION AND TESTING OPERATION The smoke alarm is operating once a fresh battery is installed and test ing is complete When products of combustion are sensed the unit sounds a loud

AY HAVE A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON THE SMOKE ALARM CLEANING YOUR ALARM To clean your alarm remove it from the mounting bracket as outlined in the beginning of this section You can clean your alarm by using compressed air or your vacuum cleaner hose to blow or suck air through the openings around the perimeter of the alarm The outside of the alarm can be wiped with a damp cloth After cleaning reinstall your alarm Test your alarm by using the test button 7 LIMITATIONS OF SMOKE ALARMS WARNING PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY Smoke alarms are devices that can provide early warning of possible fires at a rea sonable cost however alarms have sensing limitations lonization type alarms offer a broad range of fire sensing capabilities but are better at detecting fast flaming fires than slow smoldering fires Photoelectric alarms sense smoldering fires better than flaming fires Home fires develop in different ways and are often unpredictable Neither type of alarm photoelectric or ionization is always best and a given alarm may not always provide warning of a fire e A battery powered alarm must have a battery of the specified type in good condi tion and installed properly e A C powered alarms will not operate if the A C power has been cut off such as by an electrical fire or an open fuse e Smoke alarms must be tested regularly to make sure the batteries and the alarm circuits are in good operating condition e Smok

HEN THE ALARM SOUNDS e Leave immediately by your escape plan Every second counts so don t waste ime getting dressed or picking up valuables e In leaving don t open any inside door without first feeling its surface If hot or if you see smoke seeping through cracks don t open that door Instead use your alternate exit If the inside of the door is cool place your shoulder against it open it slightly and be ready to slam it shut if heat and smoke rush in e Stay close to the floor if the air is smoky Breathe shallowly through a cloth wet if possible e Once outside go to your selected meeting place and make sure everyone is there e Call the fire department from your neighbor s home not from yours e Don t return to your home until the fire officials say that it is all right to do so There are situations where a smoke alarm may not be effective to protect against fire as stated in the NFPA Standard 72 For instance a smoking in bed b leaving children home alone c cleaning with flammable liquids such as gasoline Further information on fire safety can be obtained in a pamphlet titled IN A FIRE SECONDS COUNT published by the NFPA Batterymarch Park Quincy MA 02269 9 NFPA REQUIRED PROTECTION The National Fire Protection Association s Standard 72 reads as follows 2 2 1 1 1 Smoke alarms shall be installed outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each ad

9. alignment of the alarm with the hallway or wall the A line on the mounting plate must be parallel with the hallway when ceiling mounting or horizontal when wall mounting After selecting the proper smoke alarm location as described in Section 1 attach the mounting plate to the ceiling as shown in Figure 1 For wall mounting see Figure 2 Place mounting plate on the wall Be sure the UP FOR WALL MOUNTING text and arrow are facing up Use the screws and anchors provided to secure the mounting plate Battery installation instructions are provided on the inside of the battery door To ensure proper installation of the smoke alarm battery follow the instructions When installing the battery press the battery reminder finger down into the battery compartment and install the battery see Figure 3 When wall mounting the A line should be horizontal and the UP FOR WALL MOUNTING arrow must be pointing up Install FIGURE 3 FIGURE 4 CAUTION IF THE BATTERY REMINDER FINGER IS NOT HELD DOWN IN THE BATTERY COMPARTMENT BY THE BATTERY THE BATTERY DOOR WILL NOT CLOSE AND THE UNIT WILL NOT ATTACH TO THE MOUNTING BRACKET 6 Alignment marks are provided on the edge of the trim plate and the alarm After installing the mounting plate place the alarm on the mounting plate with the align ment marks lined up Twist the alarm in the direction indicated by the ON arrow on the alarm cover
10. ditional story of the family living unit including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics In new construction a smoke alarm shall be installed in each sleeping room A 2 5 2 1 Smoke Detection Are More Smoke Detectors Desirable The required number of smoke alarms might not provide reliable early warning protection for those areas separated by a door from the areas protected by the required smoke alarms For this reason it is recommended that the householder consider the use of addition al smoke alarms for those areas for increased protection The additional areas include the basement bedrooms dining room furnace room utility room and hall ways not protected by the required smoke alarms The installation of the smoke alarms in the kitchen attic finished or unfinished or garage is normally not recom mended as these locations occasionally experience conditions that can result in improper operation This equipment should be installed in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association s Standard 72 NFPA Batterymarch Park Quincy MA 02269 NOTIFY YOUR LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT AND INSURANCE COMPANY OF YOUR SMOKE ALARM INSTALLATION 10 SERVICE AND WARRANTY If after reviewing this manual you feel that your smoke alarm is defective in any way do not tamper with the unit Return it for servicing to Fyrnetics Inc 1055 Stevenson Ct Ste 102W Roselle IL 60172 See Warranty for in warranty ret
11. e alarms cannot provide an alarm if smoke does not reach the alarm Therefore smoke alarms may not sense fires starting in chimneys walls on roofs on the other side of a closed door or on a different floor e f the alarm is located outside the bedroom or on a different floor it may not wake up a sound sleeper e The use of alcohol or drugs may also impair one s ability to hear the smoke alarm For maximum protection a smoke alarm should be installed in each sleeping area on every level of a home e Although smoke alarms can help save lives by providing an early warning of a fire hey are not a substitute for an insurance policy Home owners and renters should ave adequate insurance to protect their lives and property 8 GOOD SAFETY HABITS DEVELOP AND PRACTICE A PLAN OF ESCAPE e Make a floor plan indicating all doors and windows and at least two 2 escape routes from each room Second story windows may need a rope or chain ladder e Have a family meeting and discuss your escape plan showing everyone what to do in case of fire e Determine a place outside your home where you all can meet if a fire occurs e Familiarize everyone with the sound of the smoke alarm and train them to leave your home when they hear it e Practice a fire drill at least every six months Practice allows you to test your plan before an emergency You may not be able to reach your children It is important hey know what to do WHAT TO DO W
12. hat the outer walls and ceiling are either hot or cold install the alarm on an inside wall For minimum protection install at least one alarm close to the bedrooms For additional protection see SINGLE FLOOR PLAN in Diagram B WARNING TEST YOUR SMOKE ALARM OPERATION AFTER R V OR MOBILE HOME VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN STORAGE BEFORE EACH TRIP AND AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK DURING USE 2 LOCATIONS TO AVOID Alarms must not be located within 3 feet of the following e Supply and return registers used for forced air heating and air conditioning e Ceiling fans and other high air flow areas e Bathrooms which contain a tub or shower In general alarms should not be located In the garage Products of combustion are present when you start your automobile In an area where the temperature may fall below 40 F or rise above 100 F In dusty areas Dust particles may cause nuisance alarms or failure to alarm In very humid areas or near a bathroom Moisture or steam can cause nuisance alarms Near fluorescent lights Electronic noise may cause nuisance alarms 3 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS CAUTION THIS UNIT IS SEALED THE COVER IS NOT REMOVABLE 1 When mounting in a hallway the A line should be parallel with the hallway Remove the mounting plate from the back of the alarm by holding the mounting plate and twisting the alarm in the direction indicated by the OFF arrow on the alarm cover To insure aesthetic
13. nge hood which vents to the outside non recirculating type will also help remove these combustible products from the kitchen If the alarm does sound check for fires first If a fire is discovered get out and call the fire department If no fire is present check to see if one of the reasons listed in Section 2 may have caused the alarm 6 MAINTENANCE BATTERY REPLACEMENT tamper resist pin has been used refer to TAMPER RESIST LOCKING PIN in Section 3 for removal instructions To replace the battery remove the alarm from the mounting plate by rotating the alarm in the direction of the OFF arrow on the cover see Section 3 Figure 1 The Model PE9 Smoke Alarm is powered by a 9V carbon zinc battery alkaline and ithium batteries may also be used A fresh battery should last for one year under normal operating conditions This alarm has a low battery monitor circuit which will cause the alarm to chirp approximately every 30 40 seconds for a minimum of seven 7 days accompanied by the red LED flash when the battery gets low Replace the battery when this condition occurs USE ONLY THE FOLLOWING 9 VOLT BATTERIES FOR SMOKE ALARM REPLACEMENT Carbon Zinc Type EVEREADY 216 OR 1222 GOLD PEAK 1604P OR 1604S Alkaline Type EVEREADY 522 DURACELL MN1604 GOLD PEAK 1604A Lithium Type ULTRALIFE U9VL NOTE REGULAR TESTING IS RECOMMENDED WARNING USE ONLY THE BATTERIES SPECIFIED USE OF DIFFERENT BATTERIES M
